another thing that stands out about The Capture?

Jake never fights off Temrash's control. Not so much as a twitch of a finger. There's no heroic will-powering through a Yeerk. There's no just fighting harder than the other weaker minded hosts, so it cuts off the thought of blaming the hosts for just not fighting hard enough in the bud.

The reason we saw the Chapmans actually resist is because they're voluntary hosts so their Yeerks aren't used to keeping the hosts' wills in check. The brief look Jake sees in Tom's face in The Invasion was hard fought to a degree that Jake himself, our protagonist, cannot match.
