Princess Rosalina Dress Redesign

Last but not least, following my previous posts we have Rosalina!

It was her the inspired this redesign project after I saw a dress from a couture fashion show. More information will be below the cut :-)

I wanted to truly embody Rosalina's etheral and mystical character, so the influences were inspired by fashion that demonstrated this.

Originally this redesign was inspired by this dress from Jean Paul Gaultier's 1997 Spring Couture fashion show. With its assymetrical off-shoulder sleeves and fine flounces flowing in a diagonal direction, the silhouette truly made me feel like it was something Rosalina would have, so it was our starting inspiration.

Her high waistline was reminiscent the 'empire waist' style of Regency era fashion, so I incorporated that with the dress. It's not very prominent as her dress flares out at the end, but it's still worth mentioning. The regency gown also influenced the split of the dress in the middle. Wish I could find a proper name for the term I'm looking for but I can't.

Another couture collection that largely influenced this redesign was Guo Pei's 2017 Spring Couture fashion show. Inspired by the Cathedral of Saint Gall in Switzerland, these outfits embody the sense of heaven and ornate designs, which embodies Rosalina's character. The sheer, long flowing fabric and intricate, openwork crown were largely inspired by this collection. The gold frame around the bottom of the dress was also taken from this show, particularly this dress. (Do not ask me what is holding her dress up, she's magical. It's magic).

Together I wanted to design a gown that resembled Rosalina's original design whilst emphasising the deity-like elements of her character. Personally I prefer to lean into her cosmic, mythical-ness, it makes her much more interesting.

Yes I draw her with eyebags. I think it's very fitting of her.

Princess Daisy Dress Redesign

Follow-up to my previous post, here's Daisy's dress redesign!

Although her dress has the same form as Peach's, I wanted to give her something different.

With her flipped out ends of her hair and her short gloves, Daisy always made me think of the late 1950s - early 1960s style. This was supported with the form of the dress too. Like Peach's, they have the narrow waist, supported bodice, and full skirt. But with the hair and gloves, I felt like it was more fitting of a 1950s-60s style, so that's what I worked with.

Dior was a key inspiration for the design. As the iconic fashion of this time was influenced by Dior's 'New Look' collection, I felt like it was only fitting (even though it was made in 1947, but I digress).

Instead of the regular panniers of the dress, I decided to take influence from one of Dior's most iconic dresses, 'Venus' with its scallops around the waist that cascade off the back. That way the dress wasn't identical to Peach's but still resembled her original self.

I also wanted to have more influence of actual daisy flowers (I mean it's literally her name) so the scallops and openings of the collar & sleeves were designed to resemble daisy petals.

To keep up her 1960s style choice, I gave her a headband instead of a crown. This choice felt more natural for her character. This was also inspired by a specific fashion reference, but just like the Peach gloves I lost the reference. But it's inspired by a look I swear.

Also a white belt as an homage to her original dress design.

Anyways what do you guys think? Truthfully this is the one I am the least satisifed with. I wanted to incorporate some sort of 'flower power' motif but it didn't fit the era I was looking at and every time I tried to add it in it never fit quite right. Next time I also want to incorporate some Sarasaland influence (based off what little we know of it). But anyways!

Princess Peach Dress Redesign

Growing up with the Super Mario franchise, I have always loved the princesses. However, I've always thought about how similar their dresses (and other things) are. Obviously Super Mario characters aren't exactly designed to be super detailed, so it makes sense, but I decided to challenge myself into creating more unique dresses for our leading ladies. First we have Peach!

With her large, puffed sleeves, slender bodice, and bell-shaped skirt, Peach's dress gave the impression of a late Victorian-era dress. Specifically around the 1890 - 1899 era (most notably around 1895 to be precise). I designed the dress with this in mind, giving her leg-o-mutton inspired sleeves, a high neckline, and adding more dress volume to the back, whilst also maintaining her iconic dress design.

I also wanted more emphasis on mushroom elements - after all they ARE a big part of the franchise. With that, I took inspiration from Iris van Herpen's 2021 couture collection 'Roots of Rebirth', which primarily focuses on fungi, roots, and the elements of nature that bring organisms to life. Incredibly fascinating stuff, would recommend. Notable elements from the designs were the finely woven fabric pleated together resembling the gills of a mushroom. This was used to create the front bodice, as well as the crown design.

The trim of the dress was styled to resemble the shape and growth of wild shelf mushrooms, with their unique ridged edges and stacked appearance.

We also have little white patterns on the dress to emphasise the 'mushroom' influence.

And truthfully, the gloves were also inspired by Roots of Rebirth with Victorian glove influences, intended to be a fine, lacy design. I had a very specific reference but unfortunately I lost it. So just take my word for it.

Altogether we have a very mushroom-y design that (hopefully) maintains Peach's elegant, sophisticated character, but also stays true to her recognisable design.

Do you think he would miss what his best friend could have to been to Katniss and the bond they could have had because they’re were so similar?

Like Katniss and Burdock would be hanging out in the woods and Katniss would do something so similar to Haymitch that he wouldn’t help but mourn?

So it's pretty much canon that Burdock Everdeen is related to the Covey, but now it's got me wondering why isn't he actually part of the Covey group?

He doesn't follow the Covey naming convention, nor does he live in the Covey's house along with the others. Did his parent/s decide the Covey lifestyle wasn't worth it anymore? If we believe that Barb Azure is his mother (speculation), then why didn't she pass down the tradition of her people? And did Burdock hear the stories of Lucy Gray passed down from the others? We know that he knows where they're buried so surely someone in the Covey must've shown him.

Did he feel like he belonged with the Covey or in the Seam or neither?
