There are basically two kinds of people in this world: folks who have an opinion on re-routing their car's battery into the trunk, and normal people. Personally, I'm a never-trunker, but it is my understanding that many of you spent your formative years trying to run $70 in welding cable through the inside of your perfectly-good car for reasons that are unclear to both of us.
Of course, we all know the technical reasons. Batteries are heavy, and by taking them out of the front of your car, you can make the front of your car lighter. That will make it more agile, change directions easily. Every small bit of advantage you can get in racing should be taken, after all. You never know when that handful of pounds will make the difference between second and first place. It's a serious race car, mom, the battery is in the back!
What you actually did, though, is make your car measurably worse at being a car. And, if you were a cheap busted-ass young adult like myself, having a working trunk was needed way more often than busting big G-forces at the racetrack. You can't shove armloads of stolen copper into the engine bay... it can get snagged in the radiator fan. This modification, maybe even more than cutting springs, is when a lot of apprentice car-modifiers realize that what they've actually done is break the car.
Don't worry if you feel embarrassed about your illicit past. Like I said up above, most people don't even realize you can do this. To them, every part should remain in exactly the place that God – or Toyota, whichever one comes first in the warranty chain – mandated that it should be. And if you find all the leftover lengths of battery cable you used way back when, let me know. I'll get rid of all that delicious copper that reminds you of your early car-ruining days, no problem.
