Quick Guide: Starting Out

A lot of people are enjoying their time in Zephyr Town since the game released yesterday, but there's been some common questions going around, so let's give some common answers!

Tools are doled out through the first few days of playing. If you don't have something you need yet, it will show up soon. Don't worry about it.

Use the sickle to harvest wildflowers and herbs.

Tea Tins are made with the yellow windmill, which is the third one unlocked.

Instead of holding the button to power up your tools like in previous games, you get stronger actions by jumping. Jump, then use the tool!

Keep the cans, boots, and bottles you catch!

Keep the medals you find!

Trends are randomized and change from season to season. The same trends won't show up next year!

To read your mail, open your menu (X button on Switch) and navigate (shoulder buttons) to the letters tab. You don't have to accept gifts immediately and can hold them indefinitely, so holding onto them until you need them is a good plan!

To use bait, hold the item and then press the button shown in the lower right corner (Y on Switch) labeled "Set Bait."

If there's no event or request to open a friendship lock, it'll probably be available the next day.

When you see text on your villager tab that says "Something special might happen!" that means you can trigger an event. Keep an eye on the top right of the screen for a red exclamation point, indicating an event is available, and then check your map for where it is.

You learn recipes by eating food! So eat as many new things as you can!

Some recipes require an additional appliance. These will be available as you continue to upgrade the bazaar and add new shops.

If you need money and can't wait for the next Bazaar day, you can sell stuff directly to Miguel's Mercantile. You won't have any of the benefits of the Nature Sprites or your stall decorations though, so you won't get as much money as selling the same goods at the Bazaar.

Rare animal products (Egg+, Milk+, etc. Usually gold colored) will have a .5 higher quality rating if you process them into regular goods (Butter, Mayonnaise, etc.), but they can also be processed into an enhanced variant (Yarn+, Cheese+, etc.) with the Yellow windmill.
