Social Media
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrYcHFW8Idg
This video talks about how social media gets into our head and we think we have to be like everyone else and that everyone else is prettier, skinnier, happier, etc.
But what people don’t know is that they post their best self, nobody knows what happens behind closed doors, but because social media is such a day to day lifestyle nowadays, it encloses our mind.

Website - bio
Tumblr media
I have a page in which i have my bio, it has a little description of where i come from because i got my inspiration and passion for landscape photography from taking photos in Spain. I also started taking just random photographs of my friends when i got my first camera and put that in my bio which is where i get my like for taking candid close ups of people. I placed a photograph of myself because i feel like it makes people understand me more and can get more of a feel of how i am. Furthermore i talked in my bio about the projects I'm currently undergoing which is my photobook.

Mentoring
After easter, they had their work in progress exhibition, so i expected them to have had work done, had expanded on their idea and knew what they were going to do for their final. But again, only one of the groups knew this.
Tumblr media
They had tried out different weaving, big and small, etc. You can’t really see it on the photograph below, but they weaved just face of the teddy bear. They played around with the whole photograph and then just parts of the photograph.
They introduced text into the woven images on the right on a white background. here they had just hand written it, but they said that they plan on writing it up in photoshop and printing it out as part of the image. I really like how they look, but because the text doesn't fill the entire image (left to right), there are blank spaces on either side. i suggested to them that they cut this out, so the only white bit would be in the middle with the text on it, this would also make it seem like the text is more part of the image, it brings it together, it makes it not seem like it is separate.
They asked me which weaving i thought looked better, and in my opinion the bigger strips looks better, because you can see it woven but you can see bother images clearer as well as it blended together. The smaller strips unless you look really close and concentrate it is hard to see the image. But this i something i told them and i told them that it depends what they are going for. Either more obvious and clear or something you have to concentrate on.

HÉLOÏSE BERGMAN
28th March 2017
She started as a journalist, but she is a bit dyslexic so she thought photography, visual art would be better for her. She did an MA in photography.
The dying art of smoking - lasted 5 years Most of her projects are very heavily researched. She started looking at this project and looking at smokers and the body language they use when smoking.   She started in street photography. It was the 10th anniversary from when they banned smoking in public. She made a small project within this, put up billboards around Shoreditch, but they got taken down saying they were too close to advertising smoking, but they had no text. It became a performance art in a way because she had to hire another place and turn that into a studio so that the people could smoke, because it was illegal for them to smoke in the uni studio and in her studio because it was commercial. What interested her was having the single portrait, it being isolated and then having them put together with other portraits makes it more interesting and like a dialog. She mostly exhibits in A1 or A0 size. She wants to get people talking about smoking and get them thinking about how it has changed society. She isn't anti-smoking but her research has put her off. She did an installation, at an exhibition she put a camera on the smoking area with a live feed to a projection inside, so that the people outside smoking became a piece of the work. Concertina book so that you can mix the people. The idea was to reference filmmuor and the 80s style. She liked participating with the people, she interviewed them after they smoked 2 cigarettes. Researching, she found out that 1 in 5 people die from direct smoking, so for one of her exhibitions she went blacking the face of every 5th person, and says that when they are printed life size, it was quite shocking to see, especially when you know the people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I found this project really interesting as a smoker myself. I feel like i connected with it. I started thinking about how i stand and hold my cigarette and how my friends do and the weird ways they smoke it, like looking at the cigarette, etc.
Ta Moko - Modern Maori Warriors - present She started this project because she is from new Zealand and hasn't been there in ages and started feeling cut off, so she wanted to remind herself of the country and see the changes, etc.

Mentoring
Over easter I kept checking up on my group via Facebook messenger, as no one uses slack. I asked how their work was going and if they would send me photos and tell me about what they've done. As I expected only a couple of people answered.
Rupali: She showed me this edit she had done, and explained that she had been in contact with Brianna, one of the creative writing students and with whom she was working with. She went for a victorian style portrait and said that she would be doing another shoot. Her and Brianna came up with this idea when they spoke about what outcome they wanted. I asked what it was about but she said that Brianna hadn’t given her any text to work with so she got a quote of google and said that she didn’t quite like it so far. I suggested to her that she should play around with different fonts and different colours, maybe go for a colour thats in the image.
Tumblr media
Iga & Hannah: They already had started playing around with glitches before easter and when i asked them they said that this was now their final idea, to work with glitches and text and then they also introduced weaving.

Photobook Workshop
1st April 2017
Everyone is going to keep working independently at the venture community centre, maybe once a month. There will be an exhibition in November. Each person will show their book, and also contribute something that would then become a collective book.
This book is compromised of parts of the roundabout stuck together and then scanned together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This person has a photograph on one page and it again but reversed on the other. She said that it looks a bit like a coffin, so she made a man shape to stitch in the middle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It started out really basic, Japanese stitch with just A4 photographs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She then tried to but in gatefolds but didn't quite like it.
Tumblr media
This is the work in progress of her last one. She only used 2 photographs but in different colours and separated the photographs left and right, so they're two separate books in one.

Photobook Workshop
25th March 2017
Someone mentioned a photographer and an exhibition he has on at the minute because it is all about children, and venture centres, and it relates to their projects and the place. His name is Mark Neville - Photographer who has done work on PTSD and The Army. He has 2 books. He’s sends them to people who think will be able to help change, instead of trying to sell them. At the minute he is publishing a book, photos from his archive of children playing and with help from venture centres. (the foundling museum is where it is at)
The woman doing this book has to finish her book by printing onto fabriano paper and bind it together. There is a real progression from her first book which was just a basic japanese binding page after page. Now she has 2 photos only but has them in different colours, folding out on either side (left and right) and having gatefolds. We spent the session, me showing her different ways on photoshop to change the colour, so she had more of an option than just photocopying, and then putting the photos in an indesign file to print double sided as a booklet. We have printed on side of her book, and plan on doing the other side this following Saturday.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another woman changed her idea to a personal one. It starts through trauma and medicine and suicide and it comes out as a rebirth. Its a visual story. She wants to make it out of medicine boxes and printed out on black a4 paper. Today she needs o print out music sheets and stuff for the background as not every page is going to be black. She wants to go from dark to light.
Another person wrote a poem about the venture centre and the community around and the kids. She might use archive photos as it would work well.

Steffi Klenz
21st March 2017
She did her MA at Royal college of art. She is an Artist, she didn't want to be a commercial photographer. Her work is presented around the world as exhibitions and in museums. She talked about the industrial revolution and how the camera is a tool built during this period. Cities icons which were built in the revolution as well. The photography you find at this time is more documentary photography. Up until the 1930s there were hardly any women photographers and this is when the first woman photographer got paid to do photography.
Caster She felt that she was surrounded by the ghosts of the former occupants. She started putting their stuff in storage, ripping off the carpets, etc. (because everything was left) She used the stuff left to create different forms with the carpets.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ariadne’s Thread She started asking herself what photography is, what a photograph is. Does it have to be printed out on paper? So she printed onto something different, aluminium.
Tumblr media
Beun She was given a project that she had to make a response to. She had to pick between archives of porn and concentration camps, and Steffi chose concentration camps whilst the majority of women chose the archive of porn. She worked with 8 students, an architect, etc to recreate an image. Images don’t always have to have a series. She's interested in abstraction and figuration.

Space
This is a drawing of the space for the real thing, drawn by Chloe of how we plan on having it. We tried to contact places outside of uni but kept getting told no, or they didn't respond. We ended up asking uni and getting the space in the student centre above from where we did the rehearsal. This actually worked out for the best, as i don’t think we could have managed getting a space that fitted all of the equipment and different parts of the project that we wanted.

Rehearsal overview
The rehearsal went quite well considering we didn’t plan a lot for it. The questions and answers were all written down which was something we need to change, and also ask them all together.
We also need to make clearer the separation of the photo studio to the selfie part, we need to make the selfie part more visible. So we plan on having banners to show the different parts and numbers 1, 2 and 3 so they know first to go to the studio and then to the selfie part and then sit and answer some questions and fill out a model release form. These banners are going to be made by Chloe.
I time-lapsed the rehearsal and plan on doing the same for the real event, but i plan on moving the camera about so that it isn’t just in one place. I thought for the final video, it would be good to have a time-lapse of the set up, combined with video and then more of the time-lapse. I had an idea of having music with the video and then the odd fade out and then a question and answer that was taken on the voxpox.

Questions Rehearsal
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the rehearsal Andreeay and Nicole asked these questions to the participants. Nicole asked them some after they did the professional photo and before they did the selfie. Then after they did the selfie, Andreeay asked them questions and so did Anna. They wrote the answers down, which took ages. So for the real ting we plan on using a voxpox and just speaking to them instead of writing all the answers down because it’s more of a conversation and a lot quicker.
