Recommended Tome: The Deep (Lokey Dark Souls)

The Deep is one of the most mysterious concepts introduced in DS3. Where did it come from? Is it the same as the abyss? What is it's relationship with the Cathedral of the Deep? Luckily, Lokey has us covered with some analysis and theorising on the subject, looking in great detail at the story of Aldrich and the Cathedral of the Deep, and how this fits in with the wider events happening in Lothric. This piece was part of the inspiration for my 'Saint Grigor The Steadfast' character in Dark Souls 3, a knight from ancient times who stood faithfully at his post in the cathedral, utterly devoted to preserving the legacy of the Way of the White and combatting the corrupting influence of Aldrich and the beasts of the deep.

Recommended Tome: Non Vereor Nox - Velka, the Way of White, and Gael | Dark Souls lore (Bob the Hollow)

Bob the Hollow is one of the most thorough and compelling lore analysts in the community, and isn't afraid to go against the grain when it comes to his theories. Bob's encyclopaedic knowledge of the series allows him to take a wider view of the story and how everything fits together to come up with theories that feel very complete and satisfying.

In this video Bob uses a combination of narrative and analysis to communicate his findings, all interspersed with high quality cinematics, exploring topics such as Velka, Fina, Rosaria and the Way of White and how they are central to the events of the series.

Bob addresses many events and situations that are often left untouched and fits them seamlessly into the narrative he presents. If you haven't watched any of his videos before, expect to come out of this one with some very different takes to what you'll find elsewhere.

Recommended Tome: Dark Souls III Lore | The State of Demons (Mitch L)

For an area of the game that many players try their best to skip through on a playthrough, Smouldering Lake and the Demon Ruins hold some deep insights into the stories of many civilisations in the world of Dark Souls.

Mitch L explores the downfall of the demons, their relationship with other cultures, and their place in the world leading up to the events of Dark Souls 3.

Recommended Volume: Dark Souls - Lordran Lore Run (saint_riot)

This playthrough by saint_riot (the Lore Run starts part way through the playlist) explores vast swathes of the game's lore as well as some of his own speculation, focused around the creation of a Velka's Talisman build.

Saint's infectious passion for the game really shines through here - his love of the story of the souls series as well as the gameplay and mechanics of DS1 makes this an excellent watch from start to finish.

Recommended Volume: ENB's OG Dark Souls lore videos

What better place to begin than with one of the scholars who started it all - EpicNameBro. ENB has taken many of his original videos down from YouTube but Eredin has re-uploaded some of them here for posterity.

In these videos, ENB shares many thoughts, insights and discoveries that have now become so widely accepted we often take them for granted.

ENB focuses mainly on analysis but isn't afraid to put forward his own speculation, clearly stating when he does so and explaining how his theories evolve over time.

The Souls Lore Library exists to catalogue Dark Souls lore scholars, as well as showcase recommended videos and texts.

On this blog, I post regular recommendations and reviews of Scholars and their works; both individual works, referred to as Tomes, and collections of works referred to as Volumes.
