while I don’t agree with that referring to men in their 30s-early 40s as “old man yaoi”, I UNDERSTAND why many people who primarily consume honest-to-goodness BL manga are quicker to call it that, because there is just such poor representation for men that aren’t hairless dehydrated 20-something twunks. They’re wrong, but I get why it happens.
I also understand that “middle-aged yaoi” isn’t as fun to say as “old man yaoi”, even when it’s more technically accurate.
So I would like to propose new vocabulary: Grown Ass Yaoi. yaoi that’s grown ass men. they’re not old but they’re not young adults either. you get me? Grown Ass Yaoi

When people go "military all bad!!!" they're not actually addressing the actual problems present in the different military services around the world, but then again actually learning what those problems are would require talking to service members, veterans, and their families without treating them like shit. The black and white thinking some people have istg.
whys combat and military gear always got to look so fucking cool when the people wearing them just objectively arent. thats unfair

No, actually, the conference was for Neurofibromatosis Type 1.
Somebody needs to sit down with the disabled people who get paid to give #inspirational talks about being disabled & explain that what the rest of us need more than inspiration is better access to support, and that what their abled audience is being #inspired to do is use their life story to make life harder for the rest of us…

There's something very ironic about all this.
This isn’t about anything.

Several years ago, I signed up for a virtual conference (during the pandemic), around my disorder. There were several panels about living with the disorder, having children, etc etc. It was midway through when I realized the entire thing the panelists were either newly diagnosed folks who were terrified and talking about how awful it was (note, pretty much everyone speaking had mild to low moderate symptom presentation. This particular disorder can be either so severe the individual needs assistance for life or so mild that you never know you have it.) Or fucking inspiration porn, including someone with a mild case talking about how inspiring these kids she met with severe cases were and how Inspired she was because they tried to live a normal life.
She got really irritated when I asked if she had permission to talk in detail about these kids. "I'm using these examples to inspire everyone who's scared about their diagnosis!" And then got even madder when I pointed out she's using someone's kids as inspiration porn. The whole thing turned into a mess because I continued to point out that nobody who'd spoken so far had been realistic in what to expect and had not had anyone who'd actually been diagnosed for a long time. The coordinator was on my side but the main speakers were upset because I? Told people that they'll have to manage things but most live an average life?
Anyway I hope the fear mongering and inspiration porn folks learned to shut tf up.

The public defender discourse people are the same people who think we should experiment on prisoners (usually justified by "if they're convicted of x crime") so we're operating in a hellscape.

While I agree that USAID is a drop in the bucket when it comes to correcting US imperialism, at the same time I think it's way better to right wrongs with victims who are alive.
What are you gonna do, "Sorry we wrecked your economy, but I DRAW THE LINE at preventing your death from malaria. I'll uhh, look solemn when someone reminds me of your death."

Kermit vs Luke Skywalker....I'm fine but why
Spin the wheel. That's who's trying to kill you.
Spin the wheel again. That’s who’s trying to protect you.
(If you have zero idea about the name you got, spin until you see someone you recognize.)
(Six months ago, I did a version of this poll with about five hundred options on the spinner wheel. For this one, I more than doubled it.)

One of the many perils of engaging with Internet Discourse is that sometimes you realize after the fact that the person you were responding to is a literal child who has mistaken their first big feeling about a wildly complex adult topic for an informed opinion, at which point you have to just stare wearily into the middle distance like: ah, yes, this is my cosmic punishment for having once also been fourteen and convinced I knew everything.
#Everytime it's like oh god you're just a stupid teenager#I was a stupid teenager#karma has come for me

the only reliable, effective way of "protecting children" is education. but people don't want to hear that because they don't actually care about protecting children, they care about protecting a mythologised ideal of innocence

My first job was shit for a variety reasons, but it had its bright spots. Retail, working in a tiny souvenir shop, so dealt with a variety of folks. The area charged a tax for plastic bags, and we had two sizes, tiny and absolutely massive. If people were polite to me and got a bag, even if they got one small item I'd give them a massive bag, so they could use it for other purchases in other souvenir shops or reuse it. If they were rude, or made a mess, I'd use the tiny one, a couple times being ridiculous shoving things in to near bursting.
One time a pair of old women came in, were rude, got pissed at me for the charge on the bags (this was a tax, not a charge by the shop) and towards the end when I was already processing the purchase demanded a senior discount. Now we technically had one, although I wasn't really supposed to hand it out or advertise it, but I was tired, hungry, and had dealt with too much that day ok top of their rudeness, so I told them we didn't (and honestly at that point it was too late to go back and add it in). They then demanded a free bag because I wouldn't give them a discount. No. Sorry. Legally can't. Goodbye.
On a positive note though, during closing time a massive, spinning rolling display rack collapsed and broke while trying to move it back into the shop. Scattering 100+ pocketknives. I'm near tears trying to clean it up and put these pocketknives in boxes. A dad and his toddler son stopped, with the dad explaining they had to help to his kid, and helped me do get it all up and the pieces of the display rack picked up. (honestly I probably looked really depressing, near tears, tiny 16 year old cleaning up a massive mess). Dude stopped to help for no reason at all while telling his kid it was the right thing to do.
Tbh it says a lot about how someone treats retail or service workers.
not to sound like a christian facebook mom but some of yall need to have grace in your hearts for the people in your lives or the people you pass once on the road and never see again like you literally need to stop assuming the worst of everyone and their intentions it is poisoning your brain. you can be careful and responsible without being a miserable person. it is possible i promise
