This is not art.

These portraits were taken during the French colonial occupation of Algeria. The women photographed were forced to unveil for identity photos under the threat of French soldiers. Many were humiliated, violated, and stripped of their dignity. These images were not acts of cultural celebration—they were tools of colonial control and surveillance.

When images like these are now shared with hashtags like #art, #vintage, or #retro, it erases the violence and coercion behind them. Reframing this history without context perpetuates historical amnesia and romanticizes colonial trauma.
