Did I Make You Up: A Cinematic Analysis
Themes
Cool lighting vs warm lighting = harsh/disappointing reality vs escapism/denial/ideal reality
White light = neutral, real reality
Shadows = Daydreams/delusions of reality
Disinterest
Disconnect
Perhaps they are shadows because he refuses to see anything in its entire form, hiding their true expressions in the dark.
Video
0:00-0:06 “Lost in a daydream.” Starts with warm lighting and the shadow of the singer, signifying the delusion he has been living in for who knows how long.
0:06-0:25 Fade out of warm lighting with a snap to cool and white. He has been shaken from his delusion. Surrounding him are scenes of couples displaying affection for each other. Yet, as the camera spins, we see there is still a warm light shining down. The shadow of a person lies within, the version of that person he has in his mind. “Did I make you up?”
0:26-0:45 The warm light goes out and stark cool and white light fills the room. The couples he saw earlier now part ways. The singer is carrying a bag that is spilling sand through the bottom. I have taken this to be a visual representation of him feeling weighed down as this bag does not appear again in the video. The dancers are the focus of the shot, but there are still people moving about mundanely in the background with disinterest. Throughout this entire sequence, the dancers themselves are expressionless, their movements mechanical as well as the addition of mechanical sounds in the music (as highlighted throughout 0:35-0:45), matching the lyrics’ feeling of disconnect and how he and his lover are just “going through the motions.”
0:46-1:00 While the movement remains mechanical, the dancers now follow the singer, his own movements matching theirs. As they continue forwards, a screen in the background displays sunlight through trees; what I can only imagine signifies memories. We then move into a close up of one of the dancers and are shown the only hint of a facial expression in the entire video. I believe this to embody the feelings he has for his partner. It is still in cool/white lighting, therefore real. The dancers and singers now each perform a different, erratic yet mechanical sequence of movement, conveying turmoil. The singer himself is affected by this as his own movements become just that. When he pops back into the center of the frame, the cool lighting is completely cut and in its place is a circle of warm light around the singer’s head. “Lost in a daydream.” This tells us before anything else that he is entering his delusions of reality.
1:01-1:20 We open up to the singer and dancers illuminated in warm lighting. The dance being performed is now more fluid and free than the previous. This dance is a recurring theme that symbolizes him living in his daydream. Yet, as we zoom out we view a scene of people, frozen and expressionless, holding warm lights as cool lighting shines above, mixing with the warm. He is attempting to live in his delusion, but reality keeps breaking through. When we zoom back in, all lighting fades out and a warm circle of light fades in behind him, forming him into a shadow. He turns to and touches it, telling us he is delving further into his daydreams. The light fades out.
1:21-1:46 He is now deep in his own mind as the warm lighting and shadows are not just an accent, but envelop the entire screen. We pan across the screen as his countless fantasies (the other shadows) play out and toss him around. Fantastical imagery is shown within these shadows. But, if you pay close enough attention, there are the shadows of a couple arguing (1:38) with the line “I was summer, you were fall,” mixed within the other delusions. Even in his daydreams he can’t quite escape, reality seeping through.
1:47-2:01 We find the singer and band illuminated, hinting that they are now in reality, by a neutral white light. However, surrounding them are sheets cast with warm lights, countless shadows dancing the theme of his delusion. The singer stumbles along with the music despite his daydreams surrounding him. I find this to mean that his delusions are beginning to take a toll on his reality as he is in white, illuminated, while the shadows are in orange, obscured.
2:02-2:20 The sheet walls come apart and he steps back into an overwhelmingly orange background. He is no longer visible and only his shadow remains against the vibrant warmth of the background. He begins his dance of delusion and the camera pans out, showing the countless shadows from before joining him. He has become one with his daydreams, sheets no longer separating the two. As he moves forward through the dance, he stumbles. He is hurting himself by living in his mind, and the other shadows do nothing to help. They cannot, as they aren’t real. Despite struggling, he reaches out and up and continues the dance, now flowing to the music and losing himself in his daydreams.
2:21-2:28 He goes to extend his arms and the orange background goes dark, the shadows disappearing along with it. Instead, a white light shines down onto him. His arms are held out with no one to run into them. “Was it ever real? Did I make you up?” He drops his arms, and walks away into the darkness.

Hope you guys enjoyed this analysis of my favorite music video! Hopefully you found it as interesting as I did.

I'd like to introduce everyone to this horrid thing I created about a year ago but haven't shown many people yet (probably for the best).
Tumblr media
This is Baby. AKA The Monster. AKA Sight Tremendous and Abhorred, AKA Vile Insect, AKA A Thing Such As Even Dante Could Not Have Conceived, etc, etc. It's made from bits of scrap fabric I scrounged from various sources and is roughly the size of a human toddler. Its design is based on Mary Shelly's original descriptions of Frankenstein's creature.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But that's not all! Behold!
Tumblr media
You can dissect this little abomination to reveal a full set of crocheted, knitted, and scrap fabric organs, all hand-stitched by yours truly!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It has a heart, stomach, lungs, liver, small and large intestine, kidneys, bladder, and, of course, a brain! So it can ponder the horrors of its own existence!
Tumblr media
I used this pattern by Less Than Three for the heart. I ended up felting it because I screwed up most of the stitches (I was relatively new to crochet at the time). The result was a bit of a blobby mess, but oh well.
So yeah. This thing lives in my house now (my family hates it). I have yet to reap the full consequences of my hubris.

all victor hateposts boil down to are "i hate victor because [he displays XYZ mental/physical illness symptom]" or "i hate victor because [he does things or reacts in a certain way because of reasons outside of his control due to his illness]"

dont know if i’ve said this all here yet but i see very often people pointing out victor’s supposedly idealistic childhood in comparison to the creature’s early suffering, and it always comes off as some sort of “gotcha!” moment when i think really there’s room there to be looking at the WHY that is. why, despite supposedly having this ideal childhood, with good, caring parental figures in his life, he fails to give this same upbringing to his own child? the issue is that of those who bring this up, their perspective tends to be already inherently limited: that is, victor is a bad parent simply because he is a privileged asshole. by beginning his narrative by describing his family and childhood as perfect and ideal, victor sets an expectation for parents that is obviously impossible, yet people continue to hold him accountable to it.
and, really, what childhood is really as perfectly happy as victor’s description? his almost-desperate insistence that his childhood WAS perfectly happy is just that — desperate — and it makes it suspicious. this insistence suggests the opposite, and i believe this assertion is taken at face-value far too often; particularly when his childhood, even in-text, was objectively imperfect and troubled, and victor himself directly addresses in his narration to walton that his past recollections of his family and early childhood are idealized, even going so far as to describe them as "religious" and "sacred" in feeling: i think [among other things] that this suggests, like many victims of childhood trauma and abuse, now that there is physical distance between the memories as well as time having passed since then, he has sentimentalized this era of his life
if you step back take a moment and look at the maternal figures in his life as well (caroline, elizabeth, and to a lesser extent justine) an obvious pattern emerges - each one of them was orphaned, and then “saved” by becoming a member of the frankenstein family, where they are afforded an environment where they are able to become these stereotypically motherly, nurturing caretakers. this pattern is broken with victor: when he is orphaned, instead of joining the family, he EXITS it — that is, he is sent off to ingolstadt, and completely stripped of this support system, leading to his “failure” as a mother.
in a similar vein, the same people who harp on and on about how victor is negligent and an unaccountable father fail to hold the creature accountable for his actions as well, and somehow the fault for the entire plot of the book (that is, the murders of the frankensteins and co) rests solely on victors shoulders.

how to feel dark/light academia without buying a whole new wardrobe
•watch/read things that make you think
•love, really love, love the way the rain kisses the ground, love the crack in your curtains through which the morning sun shines through, love the simple act of making tea
•value academic tasks, unmarked homework? go above and beyond anyway. a test coming up? beat. everyone.
•read whenever you can
•write rubbish poetry that nobody will ever read, write corny love letters that nobody will ever receive, write clashing music that nobody will ever hear. do it because you enjoy it
•emphasise your strongest features, who cares if they're not "conventional" they're yours, so show them off and love them
•read at lunch
•do not be afraid to speak up, in class and in real life
•treat yourself to a nice candle, or a second hand book
•read before bed
•invest in a signature perfume. think woody, musky, vanilla, cinnamon, tobacco, rose,
•really love and enjoy yourself, have fun, be a little hedonistic but understand where to draw the line

Welcome to the Mad Doctor Appreciation Club!
I am the receptionist, Mr. [REDACTED]. I hope you enjoy your stay at our highly renowned club! ... What do you mean you haven't heard of it before? That's besides the point. I'll give you the rundown.
This club, located in this old hospital, is home to the most genius of individuals whose work has been underappreciated! From the old workers from the Heilwald Klinikum, to that mercenary medic over by the operating table, every one of our beloved members has been underappreciated for far too long! We allow outsiders to visit and marvel at their ideas from time to time, but there have been certain... Incidents. Pay them no mind. It will be fine. Not EVERY member is hostile, so you should be safe.
Here is our list of current members. We are very relaxed with what can make an honorary member, too. An honorary member just means that you have never had a medical license or doctorate's degree before, but still hold the spirit of a mad doctor. If there is anybody who you believe deserves to join, either as a member or honorary member, please write their name at the bottom of this paper, in the section called "comments".
MEMBERS LIST:
•Dr. Daniel Dickens from Angels of Death
•Every Doctor from The Heilwald Loophole (Dr. Randolph, Dr. Wolfram, Dr. Hauser).
•Nurse Anne, Nurse Heideltraut, Nurse Sabine from The Heilwald Loophole (honorary members: work in the medical field)
• Dr. Steinman and Dr. Suchong from Bioshock
•Tanner from Scrutinized
•Victor Frankenstein (honorary member: never finished medical school)
•Herbert West from Reanimator (honorary member: never finished medical school)
•Medic from Team Fortress 2 (Note from Receptionist: keep an eye on him. He's so crazy, his medical license was revoked... You don't want to know why. We just call him Medic to avoid confusion with another member.)
•Dr. Takuto Maruki from Persona 5 Royal (Note from Receptionist: he's convinced he doesn't belong here. We assure you, he does.)
•Dr. Alfred Drevis from Mad Father
•Johannes Mimir Faustus from Servamp
•Dr. Zed from Borderlands (he doesn't have a REAL medical license, but he still has one. So, he is counted as a normal member.)
•Edward Richtofen from Call of Duty Zombies
•Victor Veloci from Dinosquad (research still being conducted. He seems to disappear from time to time. Recent sightings of dinosaurs reported from members of club.)
•Dr. Colress from Pokemon Black and White 2
•Dr. Yung from The Mastermind of Mirage Pokemon
•Blue Medic from Team Fortress 2 Emesis Blue (note from Receptionist: we call him Dr. Ludwig, Dr. Fritz, or Dr. L to avoid confusion with another member.)
•The Doctor from Dead by Daylight
•SCP 049 from the SCP Foundation
Hannibal Lecter from Silence of the Lambs
•Dr. Gilbert Alexander from Bioshock 2
•Dr. Alto Clef from the SCP Foundation

So you’re telling me Victor Frankenstein can go around and play with DEAD BODIES and not catch some sort of disease but by the end of the book he dies of illness?
Dead bodies are fine but then dies from the 0.1% of germs sanitizer doesn’t kill
