temp. hiatus.
Hi all, so... it’s the big day tomorrow.
I’ll be travelling to Florence, Italy from the 4th (tomorrow) to the 5th, and likely won’t really have time to get on until the 6th, and possibly later in the week. I’ll be busy at orientation on the 7th-9th and also getting myself acquainted with my host family as well as the city itself, and the school along with my fellow students.
So activity on ALL my blogs will be halted. The time zone is very different - expect me to be on at night Italian time, which will probably be when most of you are asleep, so I’ll try to queue things up so they run when I was on during the summer.
Feel free to IM me for my DISCORD if we’re mutuals or, if we’re closer mutuals, for my Twitter account where I’m generally easy to find.
Just a general FYI - activity will be slow everywhere, but feel free to find me on the following locations:
ACTIVE:
1.) Balthazar Bratt - brattizen.
2.) Laney Donahue (OC) - spectrd.
3.) Ramona Flowers - deflowrd.
SEMI-ACTIVE:
1.) Lana Rutherford (OC) - spyglassd.
2.) Ryuk - applebitd.
3.) Hay Lin - airblessd.
INACTIVE:
1.) Marie Joseph Sanson - mariedeath.

ACTUALLY SHE WOULD RATHER stay away from any sort of law with a ten foot pole. At least this woman wasn’t actually police or the like, which was the initial concern drumming in Cat’s head. Though the question of if private investigators could ARREST was briefly considered. In the end, she paid it no mind. This stranger had no idea who she was, and since juvie, her name had faded from existence, it felt. Momentary respite could be taken here without worries. Surely no one was looking for the r e a l her – the side of her who most definitely wouldn’t be introduced any time soon.
“Nevermind, it wasn’t important, jus’ curiosity,” she explained, watching her companion carefully, though feeling somewhat off put by the way she was being eyed. While used to others staring her down for her appearance, something about the current situation didn’t sit right in Cat’s stomach.
Yet she said nothing regarding that, merely raising a brow. “Yeah, I generally d o n ‘ t look good. Kind of my every day appearance. Y’wouldn’t really look too well yourself in my position. But m’fine. Though I’ll take some water, sure.”
“Uh, right. You’re right, of course...” She trails off, stroking her chin thoughtfully. While the fan whirred in the background, moving this way and that in a rhythmic motion, Laney allows the words from this girl to sink in deeply within the recesses of her brain. Something fascinating is occurring; most definitely. Everything happened for a reason, did it not? With a brisk movement, she shoots out of her chair and heads towards the water cooler, placed surreptitiously near the back of the office.
“I know what it’s like to, um... be put in situations where people assume the worst.” She continues, taking a plastic cup off the rack and sticking it under the water spout. Staring at the water filling into the cup, her face begins to fall into one of dazed contemplation; clearly lost in another world not necessarily the one she stood in. And yet a world all the same. “Appearances can really be all someone needs to make a first judgment, and... and even then, it’s surprising how little some people can actually know you.”
Many faces came to mind, though quite a few were nonspecific. She merely sighs, and turns the nozzle off, and brings the cup to the girl - a girl who was becoming more interesting by the minute.
Something about her said, well... relatable. Understanding. Even if Adder’s harsh stare in her general direction was enough to make Laney’s hair stand on end, she was not about to abandon someone who seemed to be in need.
Such was not in her personality.
“Maybe a lawyer’s not what you need. But I know a really great lawyer - a defense attorney. Trust me on that, he’s... he’s seriously one of the best! But uh, I won’t push you. It’s just a suggestion.”

witness.:
@spectrd // starter call
the desire to sneak a quick glance at his watch has been a formidable foe ever since the stranger’s questioning began—not because he has anywhere to be, but because the gesture may get his exhaustion across.

he refuses—in fact, he curses himself for thinking so disrespectfully—and waits on, getting a word in only after another response.
“ —we about done here, ma’am? “
“Uh... yeah. I mean, I was just asking some simple questions. I’m glad that apparently this stuff is... blase to you. I... I guess it isn’t to most. So that’s a relief? Good for you? I don’t know.”
Maybe her words were a bit choosy. Maybe this man, a witness, was simply tired of being asked the same old thing by this and that policeman or detective. But to be honest, Laney herself was no ordinary detective - and here came the second round of questions.
Maybe he was prepared for them, maybe he wasn’t.
“But see, that’s not REALLY why I’m here. The truth is, I’m... looking into something a bit more paranormal here. Namely, I want to know if you’ve heard or seen any strange activity in the building for the past few days since the time of the murder.”

Indeed, she took a step back once she saw the magnitude of the situation - namely, that Adder had mentioned that he sensed something was undeniably wrong. Perhaps it was the change in the air, or the creeping sensation running down Laney’s back, but either way, the ghostly lawyer was right. Perhaps she was in over her head, dealing with such a paranormal phenomenon.
But then again, Margaret knew that Laney was able to handle it - as the prosecutor claimed, “she had a composer’s intuition”. Whatever that meant.
“So you’re saying that... the Tear is bigger than expected?” Laney inquires, bringing her visor over her eyes as she turned on the tablet in her hand. “This isn’t good. More spirits are being forced out...”
Adder folds his arms across his chest, closing his eyes in solemn contemplation. He lets out a soft sigh, and replies with:
“Possibly.”
She gives him a worried glance; eyebrows raised and lips pursed in frustration.
“Damn it, if only I could figure this out! Then... then LESS people could die. Why have so many people been dying in THIS warehouse specifically? It’s... it’s just baffling! Especially given that... wasn’t there someone who’s apparently been trying to hunt down these Tears?”
Adder merely bows his head in silence, and strokes his chin thoughtfully.
“Maybe so. As far as you know, we are the only ones who know of the Tears - therefore, to them, it could very well be a simple hunt-and-collect job. However, we can’t be certain of that.”
“Right. We can’t. Well, uh... let’s just hope they don’t show up, right?”

“Um... ever heard of the Fei He Bathhouse in Chinatown? There’s... well, there’s a ton of spirits there. They’re really mischievous, and a lot of them really don’t want to be messed with by humans looking to gain their power. It’s kind of funny though; lots of murders were said to have taken place within the building. I guess anyone who’s curious about magic and doesn’t fully understand it will face the consequences.”

It isn’t often I get to chat with fellow detectives, so... I dunno; I’m probably making a fool of myself already, but you get the idea.”

@smackstheshitouttayou has a case!
“Adder, stop it!”
Her frustration comes with a pouty face and her hand cupping her chin firmly. What exactly had the two been arguing about was rather clear, as a file lay open in front of her with the details of - who else? Kenneth Donahue, her father. His disappearance at the hands of forces far beyond her comprehension, including that of a mysterious assassin aptly named Mr. Mars, eluded her.
Adder’s eyebrow raised and hands flipping through a summoned copy of his book, looking for the exact clause to school her with.
“You simply need more facts, Laney. There is no feasible way that you are going to get anywhere without them. Me TELLING you this is a waste of time, of course.”
With a grumble, she slunk down onto her desk, resting her head on her arms. Sulking when given such a harsh reality treatment.
“You’re lucky only I can see you, dolt...” She groans, just barely hearing the chime of the bell coming from the door. Could it be? A customer?
Instantly, she shoots up, bringing her hands together and placing the papers back in the folder accordingly, smiling as widely as she can. Adder, the being who mocked her so, simply vanished into the air - unseen by the average person. They would truly have to be a psychic medium to have caught his presence.
Although, the temperature in the room seems to have gone up by a few degrees.
“W-Welcome to the Specter Detector Detective Agency! Uh... how can I help-- I mean! My name is Laney Donahue, PI! How can I help you?”

“I think Chief Schall should invest in a few transforming androids. Maybe it’ll make the police force a lot more efficient. Uh... you know? That’s a neat sword, by the way. You must get a lot of people who bug you about looking like that.”
She brings her hand to her lips as she barely manages to suppress a giggle - not necessarily out of amusement from the woman’s appearance, but moreso for herself. Imagining herself in such an outfit was rather silly, the more she thought about it.
“So not to be rude, but I... imagine that you’re here for some reason aren’t you?”

@chariotsofthegodsman has a case!
“There’s actually lots of weird things that happen in the world. So... I think it’s safe to say that that’s not exactly an uncommon occurrence. There was an abandoned bath house in Chinatown, for example, that was the source of a property dispute between two opposing gangs. The reason being that the spirits inside were messing with both gangs, claiming that each had ownership, when it reality it belonged to neither.”
“It’s pretty petty, but you’d be surprised how silly things can get when your job is, well... this.”

@ponchothief has a case!
“This is definitely not good. Not good at all.”
She says this rapidly, trying her best to balance her visor on her head while stepping over the police tape - nearly tripping into several of the police officers in the process. Some threw their hands up in frustration as she pulled out her tablet, powering it on with the familiar symbol.
WELCOME BACK, LANEY!
She twirls a piece of her hair around her finger, and lets out a soft sigh of discomfort.
“There’s, um... no way this is possible, unless the killer had access to some really, uh... what’s the word? Mercenary-level training and really sharp knives. Or swords. Dammit, I can’t think of it...”
Thinking aloud never really did bring results; but either way, all of those observations were put into the tablet, wherein she rather quickly slides her finger towards the “SCAN CRIME SCENE” option.
“I hope Judie has her head on straight, or else this is gonna look really bad for the heroes... like, uh...” A pause, as she whips her head to the side and sees him - someone with large glasses and a fairly familiar face - familiar in that he was most definitely on television at some point. This was HIM wasn’t it?
That hero with the mundane name?
“Huh? Wait a second...” She says, hurrying towards him and just barely tripping over the police tape once again. A shout or two was directed her way and she begins to nod rapidly. Indeed, this had to be the guy. Her intuition hadn’t failed her yet.
“You’re the guy, aren’t you? Urm, Arthur, right? That makes you either a witness or someone with valuable information.”

“Excuse me, this is the investigation site, yes? Just making sure, because it seems as though people keep thinking I’m just an onlooker. But I promise I’m not - so. Anyways...”
A pause, as she strokes her chin thoughtfully, gaze wandering this way and that. Indeed, this looked rather gruesome - Chinatown was privy to some displays of power (according to Tianshi, this was not the Snakes’ doing - for once, at least), and this was likely no different. The poor man, strewn up on the side of a building in the pose of the crucifixion.
Common, yet still the slightest bit unsettling.
“Just making sure. You’re one of the witnesses, right?”

“Yeah, this is my visor - it’s linked to this tablet - my Specter Dectector. Or Projector. I keep alternating names for it. But anyways, as long as a spirit decides to possess me and I’m wearing these, you’ll be able to see the face of the spirit. Uh... does that make sense?”
Undoubtedly, her explanation was a bit lengthy, or at the very least a bit discombobulating. Most people would not get a grasp on it easily unless they understood what she was talking about to begin with. Or at the very least had some idea of the context.
Ghosts were the context, by the way. Why hadn’t she said that in the first place?

Do you like detective stories? What about ghosts? What if there was a detective who could not only see, but hear ghosts and actually use them in court as testimony? And what if, as a long shot, she had a ghostly lawyer companion who wouldn’t ever shut the hell up and leave her side?
And thus, poor Laney Donahue was denied of yet another nap because the astral realm simply wouldn’t let her be. Duty calls, after all.
LIKE / REBLOG this post if you’d be interested in interacting with a horrifyingly comedic detective original character that fits this very description!
