One of the worst things book snobs have done to media literacy is convince both themselves and everyone else that you can't meaningfully engage with the media you're consuming unless said media are books. As if the countless hours people have spent analyzing Deltarune or Baldur's Gate 3 or The Dead Poets Society or literally any piece of media that isn't a book somehow doesn't count as analysis. I'm not saying that books aren't an art form worthy of respect, it's how they are treated by people, mainly teachers and academics, that is my problem.

I think that air of "Books are much more intellectual than your medium of choice" is the reason a lot of people dislike them as much as they do and think you're automatically a pretentious asshole if you have willingly read a book at any point past middle school. There are a lot of valid criticisms you can valley against booktok but one of the best things it has done is show people that even books can be poorly written and shallow.

Again I'm not saying that you shouldn't read books, prose is a great way to really get into a character's head and since they cost much less to produce compared to other mediums you get to experience stories that otherwise wouldn't exist because there isn't big money behind them. All I want us to do is acknowledge the validity of art forms that have existed for over a hundred years in the case of films and over forty years in the case of video games. Because if we did that media literacy rates would drastically increase.

I'm sorry

You will probably have to deal with the consequences of some stupid decision that I and/or the rest of my generation will make or have already made, and I'm sorry. You may suffer greatly due to these consequences, and for that I'm sorry. And I'm sorry because there will be some of us who will be unable to recognize your suffering, I'm especially sorry if I end up being one of them.

But even if that does end up happening, let this post stand as a memoir of the person I was, someone who also had to live with the ripple effects of things that happened way before my time, and someone who wishes to protect the next generations from the same thing, even if I am likely to fail.

I know TS!Underswap is going for the whole "player is separate from Chara and is actively possessing them", but I think a fun angle on it is that they feel like they have to leave some reason unrelated to any possession. Maybe they have friends they want to meet again, maybe there's someone on the surface that they want to protect, there's a lot of possibilities here.

Ok I'm very new to the living castle thing

So idk if that was already brought up

But would the castle "act" differently towards Nightmare (or the rest of the gang for that matter) depending if it's the version of Night that's a manipulative piece of shit or more of a messy father figure?

Oh totally! The way Nightmare is definitely shapes the way the castle interacts with both him and the bad boys.

I like writing Nightmare as a traumatized messy king who took in the bad boys with the intention of curing his loneliness, and ended up learning how to care for and love them along the way. I usually write BSP though so I have silly bias.

But if Nightmare was more of an angry, vengeful NM, the castle would definitely defend him less. It believes he can handle himself and needs little help. The castle might even try to shield the boys from NM once it grows fond of them... like when NM is angry or on edge, the castle may guide them away from him or do things to make NM less likely to seek them out. Maybe the castle is more of a prisoner than an old friend or a source of comfort for NM in this scenario. NM commands the castle. He doesn't work with it.

And if NM was more of an exhausted dad, the castle would probably be a little less mischievous and a little more likely to look after the boys or be nice to them. It still favors Nightmare, though, and it finds ways to make that clear.
