So a few days ago, I watched that new Fantastic Four movie…

As an artist w/ ADHD who tends to procrastinate on making art (and a variety of other things), this counter-opinion on “drawing everyday” really hits home for me. ESPECIALLY keep in mind that on some days, you may not even have to time to make art because of more important things you have to do at the moment.

Like for example, when I got really important tests that I know I gotta study for ALL DAY, why should I take my time to work on an art piece while I’m at it?? Cuz I’ll have you know that whenever I start drawing, I’m guaranteed to hyperfocus on all the details, and not stopping until I finish it in the span of at least one sitting. And this usually takes me 2 hours or WAY MORE btw, which is terrible when I got no time to spare.

And not to mention when in other cases, I’m just not in the right condition to be drawing anything. Since it does require energy and imagination to make a piece, times when I’m straight up too burnt out/overstimulated to do that makes it unsuitable.

But on the other hand, there was at least one point in my life where I stopped drawing in my sketchbook for an entire year. But eventually, when I picked it back up again, I noticed that my drawings were noticeably better than last time — anatomically more accurate and all.

So as for what I say: if you really want to improve your art, remember to work smarter & not harder. Or in other words, improvement is not about repetition, but about learning and training memory. Because if you keep doing the same thing consecutively but in the same exact way every time, what exactly are you learning from it in order to get better each time?

I genuinely think the idea that if you should draw a little every day or you'll suffer skill degradation is a total fabrication. Some of the best art I've ever drawn has been coming back from long breaks. I'm talking like weeks. Sometimes you just gotta reset and flush the systems. There's no shame in it. Take breaks. The art will be there for you when you're ready.
