we NEED to make poly shipping more popular. instead of ousting that woman from a canon relationship with one of them for your man/man ship to work, consider keeping her there for 10x the laughter and drama. also, improves viewing experience and increases interest from bisexuals like myself

To be honest, I’m more shocked at the antiblackness Armand’s been harboring than I am about the fact that he orchestrated the whole thing. Did he think that ANIMATING a minstrel show would somehow make it less worse??
I wonder if it stems from his own dehumanization at the hands of a white man for so many centuries…..
#but still he was essentially married to a black man for 77 years yes??#the cognitive dissonance in this show#interview with a vampire#iwtv s2#armand

There are so many parallels between iwtv's holy trifecta that I love, and this isn't to say that louis and armand are the same level of cartoon villainy as that racist French mf. It's just that good writing always know how to circle back to things.
Lestat's toxic ad hominems and blaming Louis, Claudia, the stuffy conservatism of 1900s America, and everything under the sun but himself whenever shit doesn't go his way or his marriage falls apart (ie Claudia's callout: "he keeps them scared. And when HE'S scared, he ridicules"). Also I now know how much he fucked Armand and Nicky over and proceeded to run to another country and leave his exes to clean up his mess behind.
Armand shifting responsibility and removing himself from the equation completely. Oh Louis, YOU asked me to erase your memories and cross personal boundaries, remember, sweetie? We both wanted this and we both manipulated the story together. And Daniel, I deserve to prioritize my safety/integrity away from your scary, exploitative hands, even though I'm a 500+ year old vampire who almost snapped your neck 50s years ago and could easily do that again if I wanted to.
Louis pointing the finger at Armand for his general unhappiness and perpetual wounded state ("suffocation by the world's softest, beigest pillow!") rather than admit than he put himself in another shitty marriage. And for what though? Because he's lonely? He doesn't know any other way to conduct a relationship? As self punishment for failing Claudia? Whatever his reasons might be, although I suspect there are many, he's using Armand as an anchor in the sea of lies to be like yeah, here's the real love of my life. He hasn't changed much from the time he described Lestat as a superficial, trivial veneer (familiar anyone?) to Daniel in the 70s. It's all a fucking spectacle to distract the audience from the fact that the entire time, he's been omitting pieces and spinning this compelling story thats designed to draw empathy for him......while Armand is right there tearing pages alongside him
Essentially I think that all three of these men are cowardly and believe it's easier passing off accountability than actually taking responsibility for their actions. But doesn't that make sense in the context of their vampirism? All of them were dealing with extreme pain and/or already dabbling in the habit of cognitive dissonance before they were turned. They're grown men who were frozen into time capsules, giving them an excuse to remain exactly where they are and completely tamp down their previous trauma.
Which brings me back to Armand and Louis's current relationship. On the surface level, Louis thinks what he's doing is different, choosing a man of color like him and enforcing a power balance that's supposed to ensure that he will never be dropped from a roof ever again. On a deeper level, it's still very much following the same beats of his prior romance (vampire partner centuries older than him, "maitre only when it's convenient"). The reason why their relationship has been going to shit, other than Armand's obvious role in Claudia's demise, is because they're too alike. Fire meets fire. One is using the emo boy, woe is me persona to hold onto any semblance of humanity he has left and the other is playing the confused, well-intentioned bystander to an almost garish degree. Both have severe identity issues that only seem to feed off of each other because neither of them wouldn't, or couldn't change from when they were still suffering as humans. But they're not technically humans anymore, right? So who are they now? I think Lestat, for all of his huffing and puffing, also wondered about that deep down.......
This show is so adept at highlighting a sort of lack in character development through the slipperiness of memory. There's not much progression or breakthroughs in a traditional sense, but more of a slow exposure of an ugly inner labyrinth they're trying to hide
