Free! Creation Notebook: Voice of Creative Staff (Yamazaki Sousuke)

Maybe because he has a lot of appearances in “Free!ES”, I have a feeling I’m always drawing him. It’s always either him or Rin.

I was given the chance to draw the key animation of “Free!ES” episode 10. He’s really big and good looking, but he also has a passionate heart. He’s a character I want to become like.

When I saw him I thought Sousuke’s the kind who seems difficult to get close to in real life.

I have nothing but love for him…!! His clear bright eyes, his towering body, he slightly dark side… they are all so cool… I HAVE NOTHING BUT LOVE FOR HIM.

The way Sousuke was so happy seeing Rin again after all these years, and how perfectly in tune they are with each other was really nice.

I consciously drew him so that his eyes said “Don’t you come near me (except for Rin).”

In episode 2 of “Free!ES”, his first appearance is similar to Rin’s. He had a really dark expression, but it is a really cool scene.

It was really fun drawing this “Perfect Body” swimming so effortlessly.

Such a beautiful body! He’s hot!

What I want to know the most is what future lies ahead of him!

He’s the character I had most fun drawing the body of. So muscular…!

When I drew him I made an effort to make him as good-looking as possible.  Since he mostly has a grim look on his face, those cut scenes where he’s smiling really left an impression in me.

The moment I saw the character design, it was like “Sousuke, you’re the one!” Because I mostly worked on the scenes where he’s talking to Rin, so my impression of him is more emotional and expressive than aloof. I really love the look he gives Gou-chan!!

So Haruka has experienced two kinds of ‘pinning’: the fence pinning and vending-machine pinning (lol). Sousuke is really intimidating.

He’s like this scary suspicious guy before his first appearance (lol). In episode 10 of “Free!ES,” when he confessed to Rin about his injury before the race, he had a good look on his face from that moment on, which was nice. I like his bantering with Momotarou.

I was given the change to draw lots of Sousuke and Rin when they were in elementary school. I wonder why bratty elementary school boys don’t fasten the clasp of their backpacks…?

He has such a fun personality in “Free!ES” ExFr! He totally went along with the game when he fell over after being shot by the watergun. I’m so glad he was able to establish a good relationship with the Iwatobi members.

He’s even more muscular than Makoto!? That’s what I thought at first.

His shoulder is a lot broader than what I imagined, so my drawings were often corrected.

He’s my favorite character, so I wish I could draw him more. Such a nice upper body!!

I’m still scared of him. If he pins me against the wall, I’ll cry.
