He almost misses the table in the back corner. Far from the front windows and veiled by a thin curtain of ivy, a single table calls to Hob from across the cafe. It's only when he approaches the corner that Hob realises that table is occupied. Small wonder he missed this detail the first time; the man seated at the table is dressed entirely in black, and he's looking down at an open book so Hob can only see a shock of black hair. Still, there's nowhere else to sit, and apparently none of the students are inclined to share a table with a man who looks like a raven in human form. Hob clears his throat and puts on his best smile. "Excuse me, would you mind if I shared your table?"

Blue Moon — 23k

Finding out they're wrong comes as a bit of a shock to both of them.

Hob is Orpheus's professor and Morpheus hopes that he can help him to fix the relationship with his son.

“Humanity, my lord,” Lucienne says. Dream looks up from the guest list. Humanity.“They are the primary denizens of Hell, after the demons,” Lucienne continues. Dream decides humanity must be represented amongst the possible claimants to the key to Hell. He chooses Hob Gadling as most representative of them, and changes quite a lot in the process.

Inspire in Me, the Desire in Me — 14k

It’s the right day, but the year is all wrong, and Dream suspects that there’s something else not quite right even before he finds himself standing in front of the shuttered remains of the White Horse Tavern. Still, he’s chilled in a way he’s not accustomed to feeling, reminiscent of the hopeless, free-falling frost that climbed up his spine and inside his gut the day he was meant to meet Hob when he was imprisoned. And that’s what it is, he realizes, this cold feeling. Hopelessness. Should Dream seek him out, would Hob welcome him as a friend, or turn his shoulder as he would on an intruder? It’s what he would deserve, Dream muses as he’s preparing to turn heel from the tavern’s closed gates, even though as he’s resigning himself to shame he’s also gearing up to make this his next mission, his next purpose: to find Hob Gadling.

My Stranger, My Dream — 67k

Hob has been around death. Living in London throughout multiple plague outbreaks and fires, as well as making a living soldiering and dabbling in banditry, will do that to you. What he doesn't know is that Death has been around Hob as well. He has no idea that when his Stranger left him that night in 1389 after their first meeting, the woman who came up to him, laid a hand on his shoulder and said, “Good luck, friend,” was Death incarnate. Hob doesn’t know that he is one of few things in this world that has been Touched by Death and lived. Had he known this, he might not have been as confused as he is when his body slams into the floor of a dim, candle-lit cellar and he finds himself surrounded by hooded figures and a gold circle on the floor. That is all he manages to perceive before everything goes blurry and consciousness slips away from him again. Here in the Darkness.

When Atlas Shrugs, Whose Back Is Breaking? — 65k

In 1989, Hob Gadling nurses a drink in The White Horse, hoping his Stranger will walk through those doors one more. He’s ready to apologise for 1889, for pushing too far, despite the hurt that still stings whenever he thinks about that day a little too hard. In 1989, Death comes to a decision. Her brother has suffered for too long. Though she is bound by ancient rules, unable to intervene, she knows of somebody who isn’t and hopes he will be willing to save her dear brother from Fawney Rig, and she finds him waiting once more at The White Horse. A week later, Hob Gadling saves Dream of the Endless from his prison of glass and iron, and the two navigate the troublesome waters of friendship and healing.

Dream never went into the tavern with his sister. It was Death who fascinated by Hob grants him immortality. Years later Hob and Dream meet each other not knowing about each other's connection to Death assuming the other is human.

Home is the person who’s holding onto him like a lifeline. Because Hob likes to think Dream sees this as home too – sees Hob as home. When Hob was three years old, he created an imaginary friend named Dream.

Goodwill is Sent in Snapshots (You Only Get the Full Picture on Return) — 14k

When both Evan Buckley and Chimney Han are dumped at the start of December, they decide to swap houses - with each other. A nice two weeks in a different location will be a great unconventional Christmas. Certainly not anything life changing. Then Buck meets Chim's next-door-neighbor, and Chim meets Buck's apartment-crashing sister.

Missing Memories & Mass Confusion — 6.3k

“Confused.” He says looking at her, still in awe. “I don’t understand why God sent an angel to be here with me.” “Smooth.” She laughs, “Did Buck teach you that one?” Still smiling. “What’s a Buck?” He asks a confused look on his face. Or Bobby wakes up from a coma missing all his memories. Naturally chaos happens when he is meeting his family again.

Oh Captain My Captain — 15k

Hen’s interest in their new captain was definitely piqued, and she could see that Chimney’s was too – who had he been to the beach and the market with? And why didn’t he want to share it with his crew? As she ate the delicious meal and looked around at the chattering crew, the atmosphere the lightest it had been since it was announced that Gerrard was on his way out, Hen also found herself hoping that Nash would be sticking around if this was simply a precursor of things to come. Although hopefully they’d manage to get some more information out of the stoic man at some point. — Or, over a decade before Eddie spends months dating the captain’s son without realising it, the 118 gets a new Captain. Hen, Chim and the rest of the crew struggle with getting to properly know the stern and stoic Captain Nash – and then they get called to a scene where one Evan Buckley-Nash is stuck up a tree.

Biggest Heart In The Smallest Body — 10k

The 118 and Athena respond to a house fire. A little boy no one has ever seen before just saved two lives by simply knocking on the door. Unfortunately he isn't done being a tiny hero yet and runs into the fire to save a little boy's cat no one knows where he is or if he's okay. Bobby find the little guy and it ends up being a rescue to remember one that changes his and Athenas lives forever (in the best way possible obviously). Happy chaos basically.

Family Is More Than A Six Letters Word — 11k

Bobby Nash's life ended the day he lost his wife and children. Determined to just get through until he'd repaid his self-inflicted debt, wallowing in self pity and copious amounts of alcohol each night, Bobby's plans are thwarted when he's forced to save a young Howard Han from his own stupidity. From then on, Bobby is forced into living and his barriers slowly come down as more and more "lost" children find their way to his doorstep. An AU in which Bobby meets the rest of the 118 as kids and helps to save each and every one of them, saving his own soul in the process.

Buck is confused first, which is telling, in hindsight. “I wasn’t going to ask you to?” is out of his mouth before he even recognizes the disapproving twist of his father’s mouth, the hardness in his eyes. “So, that’s it then? You’ve replaced your family with people who will let you throw your life away,” his father accuses, scoffing as he steps into Buck’s space. “You think they care about you? You think they’ll stick around when they realize how difficult you are?”

It was fine. It was more than fine. Buck had worked his way from the periphery of this picture, frame by frame, until he stood inside it; he could be the guy in the corner, smiling. He could be the second mention. He could be extra. Still, the old echo stirred: not necessary. Replaceable. Or, Chris writes an essay in class about his hero. It isn't who Buck expects.

Tommy, having been raised by an abusive homophobic father and an alcoholic mother, had spent his whole life lying about who he was and keeping his true self hidden. He had a job he loved, friends he’d (somewhat) open up to, and a home he owned and poured his own blood sweat and tears into making it into the sanctuary he’d craved as a child. The only thing missing was someone to share his life with. And then a colleague of his old 118 friend Howie needed a place to stay..

Eddie never thought he'd be coming back to L.A. like this. His chest aches as he pulls into the familiar, but long forgotten, driveway of South Bedford Street. The place that had been his home for years, the place that Chris grew up in, the place where Eddie's heart got ripped out of his chest and stomped on. He has to sit in his truck and force himself to breathe until the black pinpricks disappear from his vision. Eddie tugs his Saint Christopher chain over his head, sighing as he works the wedding band off his ring finger to slide it onto the necklace before replacing it and tucking it under his shirt. Buck gets into an accident, losing some of his memories, so Eddie comes back to L.A. for the first time in five years to pretend he's still Buck's husband.

They meet each other again in the 118 where Buck pretends he never was in the army, while behind the backs of the team, the two bond about it. The truth comes out when Eddie gets in his own head and the best way to pull him out is for Buck to pull out his commanding voice.

Evan Buckley is 26 and lives in L.A. with his parents after dropping out of the SEALs training. He’s lost and confused and lonely (his sister lives with her boyfriend and he pushed away the only friends he had). One day he gets in a serious accident where his leg is badly injured, sending him into a panic spiral. He is terrified that he will lose his leg and the firefighters on the scene think they will have to sedate him. At least until firefighter Eddie Diaz enters the scene and ends up being the only one who manages to calm him down. Eddie is 27 and a probationary firefighter at the 118. He lives in L.A. with his 7-year-old son, Christopher and he struggles with his relationship with his parents and his lack of friends after moving from Texas. Despite his captain's advice, he doesn’t stop looking for Buck after they drop him off at the hospital and that means he gets so much more than a friend for life.

The 118 responds to a call involving Buck's favourite ballroom dancer. They dance and somehow end up kissing.

I Didn't Mean to Say I Do, But I Do. I Do — 213k

Years before joining the 118, Buck’s travels take him to El Paso, where he meets Christopher. When Eddie comes back from Afghanistan and Shannon leaves, Buck ends up staying. As bills pile up, the best move is for them to get married, just for convenience, they’ll divorce when Eddie comes back from his re-enlistment. Then Eddie gets injured and it’s just easier to stay married for a little longer, while Buck gets started at the 118. However, Buck doesn’t mention his ‘husband’ and kid, not feeling like they’re his to keep. When Eddie gets the offer from Bobby, they decide to lie and pretend they don’t know each other, so they can work together. The whole lie gets out of hand as feelings start to become real, until it all comes to a head in the aftermath of the fire engine explosion. AKA: Secret marriage of convenience buddie slow burn AU, where Buck and Eddie have been married for years so Buck could adopt Chris and no one at the 118 knows.

If I Lay Here, Would You Lie With Me (Forget About The World) — 90k

The one where Eddie’s in the army, Shannon gives up her rights to Chris, and Eddie needs a babysitter. Good thing Lena knows Buck, the guy having nothing better to do than help babysit until Eddie gets back. When Buck isn't found amongst the survivors his loved ones have to accept that he died in the fire. A presumed dead story about forgiveness, grief, second chances and falling in love.

Eddie wasn't bringing it up because he enjoys sharing information; he was a private person. He's brought it up because he wants to talk about it, and he trusts Bobby with this.
