002 🎕 sisi ni sawa.
The group entered Auradon Prep through the grand entrance doors, greeted by the gentle flutter of light streaming in from stained glass windows. Its warm glow intertwined with that of the chandeliers above. Amidst the crowd, Minnie skillfully navigated to the front, finding a place beside her cousin and his girlfriend.
"So you guys have a lot of magic here in Auradon? Like wands and things like that?" Mal asked, halting in the middle of the hall as everyone gathered around her. It was clear she knew how to control a room, captivating even Minnie, who stole glances at a particular blue-haired girl. The girl seemed entranced as if Mal's words held an enchanting magic of their own
The trio of royals turned to face the group, Audrey taking hold of Minnie's arm to keep her beside them. The brunette had noticed the looks between both Ben and Mal as well as Minnie and Evie and she didn't like it, not one last bit.
"Yeah, it exists of course, but It's pretty much retired." Ben started, Minnie grinned before leaning forward, the only way she could physically interrupt Ben whilst in Audrey's tight grip. "Because good ole' Uncle Beast thought the 'new generation' should learn not to rely on it... like his generation did." She said as she rolled her eyes. Minnie and her uncle had never really got on too well, and neither really understood why. Perhaps it was because she was a carbon copy of her father, looks and all, and he reminded King Adam of the animal he once was... or maybe it was Minnie's constant quips that got on his nerves.
Ben looked at the girl who turned to him and gave a wide, closed-mouth smile, to which his cousin shook his head and smiled. "Yes well, most of us here are just ordinary mortals."
Mal raised an eyebrow, "Who happened to be kings and queens." she stated. With every word that came from this girl's mouth, Minnie started to like her.
"That's true!" Audrey smiled, momentarily letting go of Minnie to pull Ben's arm around her shoulder as she boasted, "Our royal blood goes back hundreds of years." This was true for both Ben and Audrey, both their father's and Audrey's mother being from prestigious lines of royalty. However, for Minnie, this was far from the truth, neither Tarzan nor Jane was a part of some intricate royal bloodline nor was Belle for that matter, not genetically anyway.
This played a large part in Minnie's insecurities, specifically when she came to Auradon, feeling as if she was given the title just because she was related (no matter how far,) to the King. Yet it was times like these when she would remind herself that, her father is King of the Jungle, chosen so by the animals and people that lived there. Lord of the Pridelands, a part of the council that governed its laws and ruling. King of Faraway; A land that most forget.
Her train of thought was interrupted by her cousin shouting towards their friend who was currently descending the staircase, dressed in his school band attire and face buried in his clipboard. "Doug. Doug, come down!" Ben ushered the boy over, detaching himself from Audrey altogether to meet the boy by the bottom.
In the lull of conversation, Minnie noticed Audrey and Mal share an awkward smile, what she didn't notice however was Evie slowly inching towards her. "This is Doug." Ben started, throwing an arm over his shoulder. "He's going to help you with your class schedules and show you the rest of the dorms."
He paused, before standing in front of the group once again, glancing at Mal a little too long for Minnie's liking. "I'll see you later, okay? And If there is anything you need, feel free to..."
"Ask Doug." Audrey interrupted, taking hold of both of the cousins ready to set off and away from the Isle children. "Or me!" Minnie blurted out, "I'm always here to help." She trailed off, staring at the blue-haired girl, who was twirling her hair.
Doug looked at his friend with a confused look, sure, Minnie was helpful but never this enthusiastic to do so. He stepped to the side to see the look on her face and that was when it clicked.
"Heigh-ho," he breathed out. In front of him was an extremely beautiful girl, looking at the brunette, eyes sparkling more than Evangeline and the Second Star combined; at least that was what Minnie thought, somewhere deep in her mind. Doug smiled, knowing he finally had something to tease Minnie about.
As Audrey dragged the cousins away, Evie fluttered her fingers in the air as she waved goodbye, biting her lip slightly before she was bumped by her malevolent best friend, allowing Doug to start his introductions.
Minnie almost tripped on her heels as Audrey sped through the double doors of Auradon Prep, "Hey, slow down!" Minnie pleaded. Thankfully, the princess listened and halted as the fresh air hit their faces. Ben sighed as he looked at the watch on his wrist, Audrey fussed with Minnie's hair, trying to make her look presentable again after the rush.
"I have to go, I need to deal with some coronation preparations." Ben huffed, before feigning a smile to the two girls. Minnie jumped up as she ruffled his hair, letting out a giggle, "Awh! We'll miss you, little prince," she pouts, causing a genuine smile to come to the future king's face. With a quick hug to both girls, an added kiss in Audrey's case, they were alone.
Audrey flipped her hair before turning to Minnie, she smiled before taking her hand. The two started a slow stroll down the courtyard. Minnie hated strolling; it was slow and boring, especially in the Auradon courtyard where nothing ever changed. It was nothing compared to the ever-changing Jungle of Faraway.
The brunette huffed, turning to her best friend before pleading, "Please tell me we are going back to our dorm. I can't stand in these shoes any longer." She moaned, limping dramatically, almost reaching the floor causing the other girl to laugh, pulling her back up.
"Oh stop moaning. You climb trees barefoot, you can deal with heels." Audrey rolled her eyes playfully. Minnie pressed her lips together, before letting out a puff of air. There were many students around today, it was always awkward walking around the school with Audrey or Ben and she would never go alone. There was always someone whispering or judging her. There was always something to make her look like the odd one out, no matter how much Audrey dressed her up, she looked out of place.
"Fine," Minnie started, pulling Audrey to a small stone bench. "If I'm not allowed to moan, then let's talk." Audrey's eyes lit up, hoping for something about Ben's upcoming coronation or even hers. The princess sat with her ankles crossed and hands planted firmly over the other girls'. Minnie swallowed before looking Audrey in her eyes, "Why do you have such a problem with the children from the Isle."
Her face was stoic but inquisitive as the girl across from her leant away, her shining smile falling as an eyebrow arched. "I think we've been over this Minnie. They don't belong in Auradon." She huffed, moving a piece of her hair out of her face with a perfectly manicured hand as she did so.
Minnie looked down, not wanting to upset her friend, "Why?" she softly spoke, eyebrows furrowing as she bit her lip.
Audrey shifted to look out towards the beauty of the gardens. She studied the intricate architecture of the old castle and the trees that lay just below the sun's gaze, everything she loved was here, away from her kingdom, away from her family. She didn't want anyone to ruin that. "Because they're not... not like us." She responded, uncharacteristically stuttering. Audrey had never been 'mean' per se, just opinionated and whilst she was taught when to be seen and when to be heard, this never stopped her opinions arising from her, no matter how harsh they were.
The curly-haired girl lifted up her gaze, moving her body in an attempt to match her gaze again. Once she did, Audrey saw the mischievous glint in her eye and her Cheshire cat smile. "Neither am I. But you learnt to love me." She jesterly remarked. "Remember? Sisi ni sawa?" She asked, taking ahold of Audrey's hands.
The princess smiled widely, remembering the day the two truly became friends, Minnie showed her a new way of life, a new way to express herself. That was okay for private life, but in Auradon, there were no half-measures, especially when it came to royalty "I did. I do love you." She started, scrunching her nose as she said so. "But you can be helped. I can't help evil..." Audrey solemnly expressed looking Minnie in the eyes, a more serious expression coming to her face as she spoke her last words, begging for them to seep into the girl's brain to snap her out of whatever she felt for the Villian Kids.
"...and I don't think anyone can."
Two young girls were sat in the reception room Beast Castle, both waiting for the same young boy. A young Princess Audrey of Ulstead pouted in her pink frilly dress whilst the slightly younger jungle Princess, Minerva Porter hung upside down from the blue and gold chaise longue - her hair scruffy and full of leaves from a day of play outside.
Audrey huffed and rolled her eyes as she looked at the other girl, who had dirt on her face and was making loud popping sounds with her mouth. Queen Belle had greeted the two girls before leaving to get the young prince, Audrey as always was polite and poised whilst Minnie would act... like an animal.
The two had crossed paths many times before, every time the mucky girl would end up ruining one of Audrey's dresses by means of 'play.' To Minnie, Audrey did not know the meaning of the word, she expected to be outdoors, climbing trees and getting muddy; she didn't see the point in tea parties, carriage rides or unlimited dresses as Audrey did.
Minnie, pulling herself upright, looked at the princess across from her before pursing her lips to the side, tilting her head to the opposite side. She started giggling to herself before speaking. "You think you're better than me."
Audrey scoffed as if to say 'Is that not obvious?' and rolled her eyes. Minnie slumped her way towards the pink girl, still smiling and she held her face just a few inches from Audrey's cheek. "We're the same you know."
The princess scoffed again, this time stomping her foot and moving away from Minnie as the first drums of a melody trickled in.
"You think that life is one big game. You joke, you laugh, you take no blame. I'm telling you, there's just no way that we're the same." Audrey ranted, huffing as she sat upon the same chaise longue that Minnie had been, her pouffy dress taking up the space around her.
Minnie jumped up next to her, stepping on the pink tule of Audrey's dress, thankfully she had taken off the grubby boots she came in. "You've got to look past what you see, try not to judge so easily. Believe it or not, you're a lot like me." Audrey pulled in her dress, causing the jungle girl to fall back. She outstretched her arms to the ceiling, shouting after the other princess as she crossed the room. "Say, believe it or not, you're a lot like me!"
The young girl approached Audrey cautiously, like a wild animal stalking their prey, "Sisi ni sawa means we're the same."
Audrey scoffed, crossing her arms but entertaining the rugged girl. She was intrigued, yet every part of her insisted on staying away, "I hear what you're saying but you need to explain."
Minnie grabbed a hold of Audrey's hands, a large, contagious smile on her face. "At the end of the day, it's like water and rain." The jungle girl started to spin around, pulling along Audrey in her tiny heels. "Sisi ni sawa, we are the same!"
The two girls started giggling, Minnie jumping up onto the coffee table in the centre of the room punching the air and shaking her hips in time to the music - yet with no dancing intent. Audrey looked at her with wide eyes before looking around, making sure no one would see, before joining her. Even though the table was less than 18 inches off the floor, the princess held onto the jungle girl for dear life.
"Maybe I laugh, maybe you purr, but take a look under the fur" Minnie stuck out her hand like a claw towards Audrey, causing her to step lightly off the table before gliding across the room, Minnie trudging behind. "Deep in our heart is what matters for sure!" The girls stopped at a large stain glass window at one end of the hall. It displayed the King, Queen and Prince in all their regalia. The two girls looked up, mainly proud of their friend before the familiar weight of royalty pressed down. "'Cause we both know a higher call, like every creature big and small." Minnie continued as they continued to look up.
Quickly snapping out of it, Minnie took hold of Audrey's hands turning her away from the window. "The Circle of Life should be what's guiding us all!" She turned around enthusiastically towards the middle of the room, giddy and energetic she sang. "The Circle of Life will guide us all!"
"Sisi ni sawa means we're the same." Minnie grinned as Audrey approached, careful to not get her hands caught in her hair and she picked out a leaf. "Though you've got your spots" She gestured to the leaf in her hand, placing it on the table, she was never one to just idly throw it to the ground "and I have a mane!" Audrey's mouth hung open as Minnie ruffled her hair as she sang.
Minnie hunched over in joy, giggling as she sang to the girl opposite her, "At the end of the day, it's like water and rain. Sisi ni sawa, we are the same!"
"Sisi ni sawa, we are the same!" The jungle girl's eyes grew wide as Audrey joined her, harmonising with her. The blend of their accents was pleasing, to say the least, as if these two were destined to be with one another in harmony.
The two girls sat back on the chaise longue, Audrey scooping up the skirt of the dress before Minnie slumped herself down next to her. Audrey turned to face the other princess, a sincere smile on her face. "Never thought that we'd see eye to eye!"
"I can't imagine why." Minnie teased, "It's very easy if you try!" She urged, taking a moment of calm to take Audrey's hands once again.
Audrey looked down, slightly embarrassed, "Still to me they're brand new thoughts, not to judge hyenas by their spots!"
"Sisi ni sawa!" Minnie reminded her. "Sisi ni sawa means we're the same"
"Forget about the past when there's nothing to gain." Minnie sang, however, it was clear in Audrey's expression she was thinking of something else, something she could never forget, especially as she looked out the window of Beast Castle towards the Isle of the Lost.
"At the end of the day, it's like water and rain." Minnie urged Audrey, unsure what she had done to lower the mood. She was never quite sure about the effect she had on some people, good or bad. It was a trait she gained from her father, a rather dim-wittedness that decreased with time, coupled with her mother's energy and passion. That was what made Minnie Porter. "Sisi ni sawa, we are the same!"
"Sisi ni sawa means we're the same" The two girls repeated together, Minnie laying her head on Audrey's shoulder. "Sisi ni sawa means we're the same" Minnie sang softly, a calmness to her voice that calmed Audrey's mind, allowing her to be unapologetically herself for once in her life.
The girls remained there until Queen Belle came back with Prince Ben, Audrey returning to her old self but Minnie could see the little spark of animal in her eye and accepted her as such. These moments would continue over the years when the two were in private or through letters; yet when Minnie came to Auradon Prep and they started growing up, these moments became few and far between. And right now, in the present, Minnie was scared she was loosing her best friend.

001 🎕 same as a prince.
(3129 words)
It was a naturally sunny day in Auradon on the day the Villain Kids were to arrive. It had been a month since Ben officially announced his proclamation to mixed reviews. Throughout the time, there had been secret videos, debates, headlines, and all-around uproar about the arrival of the children, but Ben stood his ground. With Minnie by his side, they were able to change enough minds to get a decent-sized welcome party, including the Auradon school band.
Minnie stood beside her cousin in a rather uncomfortable outfit and tiara, looking through her mother's binoculars. They had been standing outside for about half an hour now, with Audrey hanging onto Ben and continuously sharing potential horror stories, all of which Ben dismissed. The brunette lowered her binoculars to stretch out the yellow corduroy dress that Belle had given her. It was a short A-line with a collared turtleneck and a belt cinching her waist. While this was normal attire in Auradon, it was quite different from her usual clothing or the traditional attire of Faraway. To top it off, she wore an ornate crown made from golden flowers and leaves, another gift from her Aunt which she was convinced she would break eventually.
Rocking on her uncomfortable heels, she turned to her cousin as Audrey spoke with Fairy Godmother. "Hey, how come I have to wear a tiara and you don't?" she huffed, letting the binoculars fall around her neck as she crossed her arms and slumped to one side.
"We had to do something to make you more presentable," Ben snickered back, a smug smile on his face which soon disappeared as he received a hard shove from Minnie. "You're not King yet," she threatened, to which the boy laughed, pinching her cheek with a faux pout on his face.
"Awh, someone didn't get their beauty sleep," he joked before yelping as the smaller girl started smacking his shoulder. Ben started to retaliate, albeit much softer, before Fairy Godmother and Audrey noticed the two.
"Hey now, children!" the older lady intervened, looking at Ben as she stood between the cousins. "You are to be King; it's time to stop this endless bickering," Godmother spoke softly yet sternly, and Ben tried to keep a straight face as Minnie popped up over the woman's shoulder, sticking out her tongue.
Fairy Godmother turned to Minnie who quickly snapped back to smiling, as if she were innocent, and Audrey pulled Ben towards her, brushing down his hair. "Now Minnie," she paused as she took hold of the younger girl's hands, "please, stay out of trouble." The older woman smiled as Minnie looked over Fairy Godmother's shoulder to see Ben, mimicking her and sticking out his tongue before his face was pulled away by Audrey's hand.
"Why does everyone keep telling me that?" Minnie huffed, blowing some hair out of her face as the older woman fixed the tiara on top of her head. Fairy Godmother returned to her position, waiting for the children of the Isle as Audrey and Ben turned back around. "Because you tend to get into it," Audrey answered, a smile on her face. The brunette slapped her cousin on the shoulder once again - much to his surprise.
"Hey!" Ben moaned, holding his hands out, confused as to why he was hit. "Well, I can't hit her, can I?" Minnie stated, motioning to Audrey. This prompted another playfight between the two before the loud booming of trumpets commenced, signaling the arrival of the four children they had all been awaiting.
The cousins quickly parted, Ben helping Minnie with her tiara once again before the trio of teens stood to attention. As the limousine pulled to a stop, Ben leaned over to the girl, trying to speak over the orchestra while not drawing attention. "You know I'm only joking, right?" A small "huh" was mumbled back to him as Minnie was trying to get a good look at who was coming out. "You're beautiful. Remember that." He smiled sincerely, which prompted Minnie to look back up at him, sharing his smile before jabbing him quickly in the ribs as the music trailed and the crowd dispersed to display Fairy Godmother and the royal trio.
Two girls and two boys emerged from the car (tumbling in the boys' case). Minnie stifled a laugh as they fought over a blanket. The two girls stood in front, the blue-haired one looking around excitedly, even doing a small twirl - something Minnie caught from the corner of her eye.
"Guys, guys, guys! We have an audience," the girl with purple hair said through gritted teeth. The trio followed after Fairy Godmother, approaching the car. "Just cleaning up," the older boy smiled with arms full of technology from the limousine as he pulled the younger boy, whose mouth was covered in chocolate, up with the blanket. Without seeing her face, Minnie had to bite her lip at the thought of Fairy Godmother's face at that moment. So much so that she almost forgot how uncomfortable her outfit was. Almost.
"Leave it like you found it!" the older woman cheerily sang, before adding, "And by that, I mean just leave it." This caused the older boy to throw the items back into the car, along with the blanket he snatched from the younger. Minnie smiled at both the girls, who gave smiles back—one clearly forced, while the other came from a small place of embarrassment. Minnie looked at the girl on the right, wavering a minute before noticing she was staring, thanks to a little nudge from Ben, who wore a knowing smirk.
The older boy started walking forward toward Audrey; now, Minnie started associating them with their parents. The older boy must be the son of Jafar, and the younger (quite obviously) the son of Cruella De Vil. The purple-haired girl she guessed was Maleficent's daughter, meaning the blue-haired girl must be the daughter of the Evil Queen. "Hello, foxy. The name's Jay," he swaggered over to the princess, who was giggling awkwardly at his forwardness—a laugh that was shared by his friends behind him.
"Welcome to Auradon Prep." Fairy Godmother tilted her body to interrupt the pair. "I'm Fairy Godmother, the headmistress." She introduced herself with a flourish of her hands, to which the group's eyes lit up.
"The Fairy Godmother? As in, 'Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo'?" Maleficent's daughter spoke, waving her hand like a magic wand. Minnie and Ben looked at each other, thinking perhaps they were simply interested in magic. Minnie was when she first arrived, magic having only been a story her mother told her. In fact, it wasn't until she met Fairy Godmother that she actually believed it; she thought her Aunt and Uncle were just making up stories for the children. Fairy Godmother smiled, gracious that they knew of her, as if her posters weren't all around the Isle. "Bibbidi-bobbidi. You know it." She cheerfully retorted.
The purple-haired girl stepped forward slightly, a small glimmer in her eye, "Yeah, I always wondered what it felt like for Cinderella when you just appeared, out of nowhere, with that sparkly wand and warm smile." She paused, adding a seemingly redundant, "And that sparkling wand."
The older woman smiled softly, "That was a long time ago. And as I always say, 'Don't focus on the past or you'll miss the future.'" She waved her hands in front of her face; Minnie could tell the teenagers' smiles were forced as she forced a smile of her own.
"It's so good to finally meet you all. I'm Ben." Her cousin proudly smiled, he and Audrey stepping forward in unison. Minnie just a fraction behind, unaware that the trio were going to step forward at all. Audrey smiled widely, an action the English girl knew to be fake, but she was glad that Audrey seemed to be trying. "Prince Benjamin." She interrupted, "Soon to be King." She giddily added, more excited to boast his status than hers.
The blue-haired girl glided forward, "You had me at prince." she spoke dreamily. A funny feeling arose in Minnie; she knew what it was, of course—the girl was beautiful, and she noticed that how could she not? It was just a feeling she hadn't felt in a long time, one she was oblivious to at this particular moment. A feeling that made her suddenly speak up: "I'm a princess!" The group turned to her, including the two royals beside her.
Coughing, she started to slouch, trying to look cool, becoming even more uncomfortable in her outfit, but she had gone too far now. "I mean, like, I'm a princess or whatever." Ben held back a chortle, looking towards his cousin and then back to the girl in front of him, whose eyes were now focused on Minnie.
"This is my cousin Minnie. Future Queen of the Kingdom of Faraway," he started, "and my successor, if I were to... well, you know." He tried to joke, earning a small pathetic laugh from the teenagers around him.
"My name is Evie." She introduced herself, curtsying to Minnie in particular, causing the girl to give an awkward bow in return. She was never one to curtsy. "My mom's a queen, which makes me a princess too." She beamed, a smile that was so infectious Minnie started smiling wider, almost certain her lipstick had smudged somehow. Evie looked at the girl, a similar feeling swirling inside her; however, for her, she knew what this feeling was. A feeling her mother had told her in fairy tales; fairy tales that weren't made for her.
Audrey shook her head, a sickly sweet smile on her face. "The Evil Queen has no royal status here, and neither do you." Evie's face dropped as she turned to the girl, her chocolate-brown eyes dimming to an almost black as if all the light had drained from them. Minnie and Ben both turned to Audrey, one having an angry look on her face and the other sharing an embarrassed smile.
"This is Audrey," Ben stated, trying to lighten the mood. "Princess Audrey." The girl continued, reaching out to grab a hold of his hand with her own, which he held gracefully. "His girlfriend. Right, Bennyboo?" The two were holding hands awkwardly in front of Fairy Godmother, who, instead of being left out, joined in and placed her hands on top of theirs.
"His girlfriend. Right, Bennyboo?" The two were holding hands awkwardly in front of the Fairy Godmother, who, instead of being left out, joined in and placed her hands on top of theirs.
The older woman smiled at the teens in front her her, the main girl smiling back. The boys were looking confused and somewhat disgusted by the kind actions. Evie however, looked to Minnie who was once again fiddling with her outfit, scrunching her face as she accidentally pulled the fabric towards the front of her neck. "Ben, Minnie and Audrey are going to show you all around, and I'll see you tomorrow." Fairy Godmother smiled. Pushing through Audrey and Ben's arms, the teenagers jumped back, including Minnie as Ben nearly hit her - which she was convinced was on purpose. "The doors of wisdom are never shut. But the library hours are from 8:00 to 11:00. And as you may have heard, I have a little thing about curfews." Fairy Godmother then glided away from the group, the school band rushing after her.
Ben walked towards the group, holding out his hand to shake each of the kids' hands. "It is so, so, so good to finally me..." He paused as Jay punched his shoulder, winding him a little bit. Minnie stayed put, expecting Audrey to follow on behind Ben. However, once she saw that the princess wasn't moving, she quickly hopped toward them, ready to start shaking hands too. "Meet you all." Ben finished his sentence as Minnie shook Jay's hand, the boy taking her hand and placing a small kiss on her knuckles. She stifled a laugh before muttering "You are barking up the wrong tree there buddy." to which the boy gave an awkward smile, not entirely sure on what she meant but more embarrassed that his attempt failed once again.
Ben continued on, shaking Mal's hands, pausing for a moment. Minnie looked over to her cousin, a look on his face that she hadn't seen since he first came to Faraway. The same look he had as he watched the birds flutter through the treetops, the undeniable sparkle in one's eye the minute they see something they love. Minnie nudged her cousin, not only for holding up his speech but also for the girl behind them. Audrey, luckily hadn't noticed.
Yes, the couple were on and off, and yes, perhaps they weren't each other's sole mates or truly loved one another like they were supposed to. But they were still together and that was enough in Minnie's mind to make sure she cut her cousin out of this until he sorted out his current relationship.
Minnie perhaps nudged him a bit too hard as the girl in front of them smiled wide and Ben glared at his cousin who simply raised her eyebrows at him. They continued down the line, Ben going to shake the young boy's hand as Minnie shook the purple-haired girls, sharing a smile as Ben continued.
"This is a momentous occasion, and one that I hope will go down in history..." Ben tasted the chocolate that smudged onto his hand from the boys. "Is that chocolate?" He asked as he moved onto Evie, Minnie giving the white-haired boy, who was now aware of the sweet treat on his hands, a fist bump. "As the day our two peoples began to heal." Ben shook Evie's hand as she lifted a foot off the floor. Minnie wasn't able to shake the girl's hand before Audrey pulled both of them back, hooking her arms with the both of them, giving the last girl a subtle glare.
"Or the day that you showed four people where the bathrooms are." The main girl crossed her arms. Minnie made a mental note to learn their names at some point. She was almost certain Ben told her their names but couldn't remember them, which was quite hard seeing how easy they were.
Ben looked at the girl again, his eyes lightening, "A little bit over the top?" He asked, scrunching his nose as he spoke.
"A little more than a little bit." the two chuckled, as they looked at one another. Minnie could feel Audrey's grip tighten, causing the girl to lay her hand on her best friend's arm in an attempt to soothe her.
"Well, so much for my first impression." Ben smiled. There was an awkward silence as Audrey saw her shot. Stepping forward she smiled widely in the face of the purple-haired girl.
"Hey! You're Maleficent's daughter, aren't you?" She started, as sinking feeling begun in Minnie's stomach, worried as to where Audrey was going. Before she could even say anything to her friend, the princess continued. "Yeah, you know what? I totally do not blame you for your mother trying to kill my parents and stuff." Minnie's eyes widened, the brunette's mouth opened slightly 'subtle Audrey' she thought to herself before the girl beside her continued. "Oh, my mom's Aurora. Sleeping..."
"Beauty!" the girl interrupted, clearly aware of the fairytale as much as the next person. "Yeah, I've heard the name. You know, and I totally do not blame your grandparents for inviting everyone in the whole world but my mother to their stupid christening." The girl crossed her arms, slouching to one side with a slightly smug smile on her face.
"Water under the bridge?" Audrey asked, giggling as the other girl replied, "Totes!" A word Minnie was sure was not in her natural vocabulary. The two girls laughed 'with' one another before trailing off; Minnie and Ben shared a look, the girl looking through furrowed brows.
"Okay! So, how about a tour?" Ben clapped his hands, snapping the two girls out of their staring contest. The children from the Isle perked up, Evie in particular. Ben led the group throughout the gardens of Auradon Prep whilst Minnie stayed behind to trail behind the group - mainly so none of them could see how she walked in heels.
"Auradon prep, originally built over 300 years ago and converted into a high school by my father when he became king." The group stopped in front of the statue of King Beast. The prince looked over to Minnie, knowing this was her favourite part of the tour. Excitingly and overly dramatic, Minnie clapped her hands and the large statue turned from man to beast.
Everyone turned as the smaller boy yelped and jumped into Jay's arms. "Carlos, It's okay." Ben assured, "My father wanted his statue to morph from beast to man to remind us that anything is possible." Finally, Minnie knew 3 out of 4 names, now it was just the main girl she didn't know and she assumed she wouldn't until she asked.
"Does he shed much?" She asked, a sly look in her eye.
Ben turned to her, his face serious, "Yeah, mom won't let him on the couch." He informed before smiling, looking towards his cousin and tilting his head to the side as he joked. "But she also doesn't let Minnie so think of that as you will." The group looked towards the brunette, each chuckling in their own way as she sarcastically smiled at the prince.
"At least I didn't have plastic bed covers until I was 13." She pouted, wiping the smile off Ben's face entirely. The boy nodded his head in acceptance as he lost that battle. He motioned to continue onto the tour as Evie hung back. Whilst she was excited to see the grand Castle that was Auradon Prep, something pulled her towards the girl in the back.
Minnie smiled, as Evie fell into step beside her, deciding now was a time to complete the set of names. "Hey, what's her name?" She asked, pointing at the purple-haired girl, eyes trained and focused on how she interacted with Ben.
Evie frowned slightly, mistaking the way she was staring, "Oh. It's Mal" She spoke softly, a dreamy tone to her voice as she fiddled with her bag.
"I knew it!" Minnie almost yelled, excitingly looking at Evie, only now noticing the look on her face. "Sorry, just now I know all your names." She started. The brunette pointed at the girl, a smirk on her face, "Princess Evie."
She bowed before skipping ahead to catch up with the rest of the group, calling Evie as she did so. The isle girl paused for a moment, a large smile on her face as she bent her knees and squealed.
A princess. That's the same as a prince. Right?

PROLOGUE 🎕 two worlds.
(1431 words)
Minerva Porter was a girl of two worlds. The blend between her mother's sophisticated society and her father's animalistic attributes created nothing less than a rambunctious, yet charismatic princess, a term she wished not to associate with. As the second in line for the Auradon Throne and the future monarch of the largest kingdom within Auradon, she knew the importance of learning to rule in coordinance with the rest of the states. Which meant attending the most prestigious school, only for the royal or the 'heroic'. Leaving the world of the verdant jungle and arid desert at the end of each summer, Minnie would find comfort in the company of her second cousin, soon-to-be King Ben, and his surprisingly enjoyable on and off again girlfriend, Princess Audrey.
"You're going to what!" the brunette screeched, clenching her jaw as fury ran through her veins. The prince stood still as his tailor tried his hardest not to poke him with the pins as his ears rang. Attempting to elevate the tension, Minnie sat up from her slumped position on Ben's bed, coughing before smirking. With a raised finger she said, "I believe he said he wanted to bring over 4 children from the Isle." Her English accent contrasting the faux innocence of her statement.
Audrey turned to her slowly, eyes wide and teeth visible. She blinked slowly as Minnie slumped back into the bed, pulling one of Ben's pillows to her face. "At least that's what I heard," she mumbled into the pillow, half to hide from Audrey's vicious glare but also to hide the chuckle she shared with her cousin, who was struggling much more than she was.
Ben let out a loud laugh before slapping a hand to his mouth whilst letting out muffled apologies. The Princess between the two laughing cousins, softened and smiled lightly. "Oh." she started, a breath of relief flowing from her glossy lips. "This was a joke. Oh, good one Ben." As the girl let out a small giggle and turned towards the window, the cousins stopped in their tracks. Minnie and Ben looked at one another having a silent conversation. Ben being the more subtle of the two spoke with his eyes whilst Minnie was more exuberant, mouthing to the Prince with wild gestures "Tell her." The boy shook his head with pointed eyes. "No, Ben you have to tell. This was your idea and-" With hands in the air by her face, she caught the eye of the princess, who had turned around to catch the tale end of their conversation.
Anger slowly faded back onto her features as Ben straightened himself up, both by his own accord and his tailor pushing and pulling his body to suit. "I'm not Joking Audrey." Ben sheepishly spoke, trying but failing to give an air of confidence.
"Ben." She stammered, she floated over to the bed before settling down on the edge, Minnie pulling her feet closer to her to give her room. "Do you not remember what these people did to our parents?" She motioned to the three of them, a small pout on her face. "I just..." She paused for a moment, the curly-haired girl shifted to shuffle closer to Audrey, resting her chin on her shoulder as she gripped hold of the Pillow.
She understood why Audrey was mad, Maleficent was a large antagonist within her mother's life, forcing her to miss her entire childhood over a jealous spat, she was sure that if Clayton had a child (which she wasn't entirely sure if he did or not,) she would react the same. Whilst Minnie didn't know much about William Cecil Clayton, she did know that he killed her grandfather and pointed a gun at both her Mother and Father, and that was more than enough. She thought for a second, however, lifting her head off of Audrey, whilst she was a clone of both her parents, Audrey wasn't of hers, and neither was Ben for that matter - once when they were 10, Minnie had to force read The Secret Garden to him so he wouldn't fail his English Essay. Which meant, these villain kids, may not be so villainous at all.
Before she could start to articulate her point, both King Adam and Queen Belle came waltzing through the double doors at the end of the room. "How is it possible that you're going to be crowned king next month? You're just a baby!" the King smiled towards his son as Belle clung onto his arm.
"He's turning 16, dear." she retorted as she picked up some of Ben's clothing that was thrown haphazardly around the room. As she approached the bed Audrey stood to attention, smiling wide as she curtseyed to her. "My Queen," she spoke with poise and grace, earning a small smile from the older woman.
Belle turned to Minnie, who was currently sitting cross-legged. She took hold of her chin in between her forefinger and thumb, causing Minnie to scrunch up her nose and smile back up at her aunt. "Hello, my dear." Belle lovingly greeted. Earning a small "Hi Auntie," back.
"16? That's far too young to be crowned king." Adam started again, "I didn't make a good decision until I was at least 42." He laughed as his wife turned to him, a stern look on her face. " you decided to marry me at 28."
The King chuckled along with his son, as he responded "It was either you or a teapot." Minnie smiled as she noticed Audrey trying to hide hers. Ben looked at the two girls, catching both their eyes before nodding back to his parents, asking for privacy to tell them his proclamation. Audrey however, caught on a bit quicker than Minnie. She waited for the lul in the conversation before stating, "Well, me and Minnie must be off. We have a big project due tomorrow."
Minnie sat up straight immediately, throwing the pillow off of herself. "What?" an anxious surprise evident in her voice, "What project?" Audrey looked at the girl, widening her eyes, trying to get her on the same page.
"You know, the big one. For Lifeskills without Magic." The brunette smiled, taking hold of her arm and pulling her to stand as Minnie kept mumbling to herself "We had a project?"
"Goodbye!" Audrey smiled to both the King and Queen as well as sending a kiss towards Ben. She took hold of Minnie's hand before pulling her out of the room. As the two stepped outdoors, Ben turned to his parents, going to speak before hearing his cousin outside shouting "Seriously what project!" The Prince smiled sheepishly at his parents.
Audrey dragged Minnie further away from the room, across the garden and towards a small sheltered pergola, turning towards her in one sharp movement. "Ben wanted us out so that he could tell his parents about his frankly, hysterical proclamation." she flicked a piece of hair from her face before continuing. "I'm sure the King and Queen will put a stop to it straight away anyways." The princess looked at the ornate watch on her wrist, before pulling her hair up into a ponytail "Anyways, I have cheer practice in 30, I need to get ready. Please," Audrey paused, taking hold of Minnie's hands, internally cringing slightly at the roughness. Minnie looked up at the girl, who would normally be shorter if she wasn't wearing heels compared to Minnie's trainers. "Stay out of trouble." Audrey finished before bouncing off towards the carriages.
As she was halfway through, something clicked in Minnie's mind. "There's not a project is there!" She shouted, causing the other Princess to throw her arm in the air as she spun around, waving back to her with her fingers and blowing a kiss before continuing on.
Minnie stood in the pergola, crossing her arms and kissing her teeth as she watched her skip away. She turned back to the double doors to Ben's room, seeing her aunt and uncle still in there. Puffing out her cheeks and letting a large plume of air out of her mouth she looked around her at the magnificent plants and flowers around her - nothing compared to her Jungle but something that gave comfort for the next few minutes as she sat amongst the dirt, waiting for her cousin so she had someone to talk to.

THE CHAIN │our flag means death.
001 ༄ set sail.
Within the confines of Stede's Captain's quarters, Mary sat upon a rather ornate sofa, Lucius to her right, sat on a matching chair whilst the gentleman worked quickly at serving the lady tea. As the shrill sound of Stede tapping the silver spoon on the brim of the delicate teacup, rang in her ears, she turned her head to the brunet, his eyebrows furrowed and almost glaring at her. He immediately looked down at his book as Mary swallowed a large lump in her throat.
"So!" Stede proclaimed, a white teacup in his hands, outstretched towards her. Graciously bowing her head, the ginger takes the cup and saucer in her hand, trying to stop her shaking. "Do I recognise you?" the blond questioned.
Mary having just taken a sip of her hot tea, almost choked, tapping her hand on her chest as a small cough left her enclosed mouth. "Depends," She started, "What is your name?" You see the problem with Mary was that she had a few names over the years and it was difficult to guess which of these he knew her by.
"Stede Bonnet," he replied, his voice carrying a note of familiarity.
Her eyes widened as the name left his mouth. They had indeed crossed paths before. A few years ago, Stede and his wife had stayed at the Haversham mansion during the summer. Mary vividly remembered that time; she, along with Sir Haversham's daughters, were instructed to keep strictly out of sight, like mere servants. She herself had seen Stede however, one night in the beautiful gardens of Haversham Hall, flooded with tulips, as per her request.
"Haversham! That's it," Stede exclaimed, his booming voice causing both Mary and Lucius to jump slightly. Lucius hurriedly attempted to dry the ink that had smudged on his page. "How is your father?"
Mary's heart raced as she tried to maintain composure, even as a wave of apprehension washed over her. "My... my father?" she stammered.
"Sir Haversham was always a good friend of my own fathers," Stede explained, seemingly unaware of the turmoil he had stirred within Mary, however, Lucius was not.
"Yes," she managed to reply, her mind scrambling for a suitable response. "Yes, my father is good," she lied, knowing that any sign of unease could arouse suspicion.
Stede's face fell as he sat beside Mary, his voice softening as he drew closer to her. Mary leaned forward, her face still, lips slightly parted as she nervously breathed. "I do wish to give my condolences for your dear mother," the blond expressed, his brow furrowing with sympathy.
Startled by his sudden proximity, Mary turned her head to meet Stede's gaze, causing him to immediately pull back, their noses barely touching for a fleeting moment. "Excuse me," she quipped, trying to regain her composure.
"Your mother? Or I suppose your stepmother," Stede smiled, ignoring Lucius, who was gesturing frantically behind Mary. Lucius desperately tried to signal his Captain to stop talking, suspecting that Mary might not be entirely truthful. In his mind, there was no way this girl was telling the whole truth.
Mary glanced at Lucius, who quickly pretended to be engrossed in his book once more. "Thank you," she acknowledged with a small bow of her head before returning her attention to Stede.
"I remember meeting her one night," Stede reminisced, delicately placing his teacup down. "In the gardens." Mary's eyes fixed on him; her eyes held the power to captivate academics and artists alike, yet Stede remained blissfully oblivious to the intrigue she inspired. "She wouldn't let me see her," he chuckled, "insisted on staying in the shadows. Made me close my eyes, count to ten, and then..." He paused, took a breath, and continued with a touch of sadness in his smile. "She disappeared, leaving nothing but—"
"A Yellow Tulip," the two said in unison. Lucius raised an eyebrow, perplexed at how he could have misjudged Mary. Stede sat speechless, unable to utter a confirming response. However, he finally noticed a subtle expression on Mary's face, something both solemn and hopeful.
Mary quickly averted her gaze to the teacup in her lap, swallowing hard before whispering, "Mother loved those." She closed her eyes, taking a deep breath, hoping her actions portrayed her as a grieving daughter rather than a woman mourning the life she never had.
Before Stede could resume their conversation, a loud crash resounded from the deck, followed by the ship rocking as if the anchor had been hauled up and they were setting sail. Annoyed, Stede set down his teacup with a huff. "I'll be just a moment," he said, smiling softly as he motioned for Lucius to follow him out of the room.
Through the partially open cabin door, Mary expected to hear Stede reprimanding his crew, but her thoughts began to drift as she questioned whether this was truly a pirate ship. The opulent ornaments and trinkets surrounding her hinted at a wealthy gentleman's abode, which she knew Stede to be, casting doubt on her assumptions about the ship's crew.
The girl crept towards the door to the cabin, creaking it open just a tad. "I gave you money to buy the fish." Stede placed his face in his hands. Opening the door more she watched the crew shuffling their feet like schoolchildren, a dark-skinned larger man adorned with a purple waistcoat with applique very similar to the captain himself spoke, using his hands to articulate. "I told them not to! They wouldn't listen"
"Hey!" a smaller man pointed his finger towards the larger man, "I didn't hear you complaining."
"I actively complained many times, Pete." He retaliated.
The argument continued, Stede attempting to interject as more and more of the crew joined in. Mary took this time to look at them, they certainly looked like pirates. Ragged clothing besides a few different pieces such as the man's waistcoat. With a smile on her face, which Mary herself didn't know why, she met one of the crewmate's eyes. A lean man with dark curly hair and beard and a crude guitar held loosely in his left hand. A loud screech came from his mouth as he jumped from his space to hide behind the rest of his crew, an arm outstretched to point at the captain's door; stunned in her place, Mary could all put let go of the door, which unfortunately allowed it to swing open, letting the rest of the crew take in the fact that a woman was not only on board but stowed away in their captains quarters.
"Frenchie it's okay." Stede attempted to calm him down. The man, now known as Frenchie's screech persisted until he ran out of air, A larger man with grey hair clamped a hand around his mouth before he was able to start once more. "Gentlemen!" Stede commanded, drawing their attention to him as he approached Mary, who was trembling with anxiety. "This is Mary Haversham. She shall be joining us, and I will hear no word about it." He firmly took her hand and led her to the centre of the deck, instructing his crew to carry on with their duties. Amidst the crew's murmurings, Mary couldn't help but overhear some rather crude remarks regarding their captain and a stick, that she would rather forget.
As the crew dispersed, Stede turned to Mary, his eyes stern as she looked up at him, feeling the tightening grip on her hand. "Perhaps now you could tell me why a woman of your standing, daughter of a Sir, is living in a fishing village dressed in rags."

THE CHAIN │our flag means death.
000 ༄ an introduction.
Mary Elizabeth Ormond was a woman of many contrasts, a blend of privilege and adversity that shaped her into the remarkable individual she became. Born in the genesis of spring in 1689, she carried the weight of being the tenth Mary in her esteemed familial line, a legacy that both burdened and inspired her.
From her earliest days, Mary was surrounded by abundance. Her family ensured she lacked for nothing. Precious jewels adorned her head, neck and fingers, and a myriad of dolls filled her playroom. Her parents valued education, providing her with opportunities to learn and grow. Yet, it was not these lavish gifts that left an indelible mark on her character; rather, it was the experiences she had never wished for that would define her path.
The late 17th century was an era of both hope and challenges, particularly in the bustling city of Stoke on Trent. The labour prospects were bright for the ambitious young men venturing into the world of work, but for the once-powerful and snobbish men like Mary's father, William Ormond, the changing times brought about hardships. William had owned one of the largest coal mines in the city, and for a time, his wealth and influence were unassailable. However, as more and more competitors emerged, undercutting his prices and usurping his land and workers, his grip on the coal distribution market began to crumble. The Ormond family soon found themselves in the grip of financial ruin.
As the family's fortunes declined, Mary's once-thriving household began to disintegrate. Her father's frequent absences left her feeling abandoned within the confines of their shrinking residence, while her mother's mental health deteriorated in tandem with their social standing. William's sporadic returns brought little solace, as he arrived with meagre trinkets to pawn or livestock to barter with. But it was on her 17th birthday, mere months after her mother's departure from this world, that Mary's life would take an unexpected turn.
At the sound of her father's heavy boots, Mary eagerly greeted him, but her excitement turned to surprise and curiosity upon seeing the wealthy-looking man at his side – Sir Haversham. Despite her father's attempts to maintain composure, the stark contrast between his worn appearance and Haversham's opulence betrayed the depths of his struggles. Haversham, exuding pride and prosperity, seemed an enigma compared to William's downcast demeanour and hidden worries.
Little did Mary know that the dalliance between these two men would set off a series of events that would lead her far away from the life she had known and towards another.
𓆝 𓆟 𓆞 𓆝 𓆟
Our story sets sail in the quaint coastal town of Broadstairs. Located a considerable 250 miles from her former home, the fishing village played host to an eclectic congregation of people.
Venturing towards the shore was only beneficial for those wishing to buy fish straight from the fishermen that caught it, otherwise, it was a boring, foul-smelling assembly of stone houses. In fact, the only redeemable feature of the seaside town was the public house, nestled just on the cliff face. This was where Mary Elizabeth Ormon resided.
1717. The Golden Age of Piracy.
At 28 years of age, she had embraced a life far different from the opulent beginnings she once knew. No longer surrounded by jewels and dolls, she now served drinks to the locals and travellers who sought refuge in the warmth of the public house.
Mary had settled within the confines of the pub, serving drinks at night and watching the cold wretched seas by day. There, she would watch the boats as they arrived at the dock, most of the vessels were small fishing boats, returning with their catch to be sold to the townsfolk. But occasionally, her eyes would catch sight of something grander – a large vessel, one with great bellowing flags, and manned by a crew that emanated a sense of both adventure and danger.
Although Broadstairs was not a typical destination for such ships, Mary had managed to deduce three possible reasons for their arrival. They were either:
An English or French naval ship, seeking to replenish their supplies before continuing their journeys. These visits were a reminder that even in this remote coastal town, the influence of larger powers could be felt.
Perhaps, Travelling merchants who had lost their way, seeking shelter in the safety of Broadstairs. These wanderers carried tales from distant lands, speaking of exotic places and people with customs vastly different from those of the villagers.
Or the third. Pirates.
It was the sight of the pirate ships that stirred trepidation within Mary's heart. With their daring exploits and legendary quests for riches, they had become the stuff of myth and legend. The tales of their escapades were both thrilling and terrifying, and they captured the imaginations of those who heard them. However, Mary had no intention of hearing these yarns.
Every time a ship docked, she observed as the men disembarked from the ships, scanning their faces before turning her attention to those who lingered behind. She was cautious enough to avoid being shooed away as a potential stowaway or being propositioned by the men that stumbled around the docks.
In her search, she sought a specific man, or perhaps another; uncertainty clouded her mind whenever she thought about it. Her only hope was that the gracious god above would guide her to the right one. Yet, he had failed her many a time before.
It was on a cold morning that she found herself, searching the men of a peculiar boat. Peering from beyond the warmth of her cloak, she observed a group disembarking the ship. Ragged and filthy, none of these men matched the ones she sought, yet she was certain they were pirates. Feeling assured they were at a safe distance, she resolved to get a better view of the ship, hoping to catch a glimpse of the flag that had been rather poorly tucked away.
Edging closer and closer to the ship, she hadn't expected two more figures to saunter down the gangplank of the grand vessel. A frosty breath escaped her mouth as their eyes met, prompting her to quickly pull down her hood, seeking some semblance of shielding.
"Hey, now you scallywag!" a rather posh voice called out, the speaker scuttling toward her. Stepping back quickly, Mary held her hands up, apologizing.
"I wasn't trying to-" "-Now now." The man interrupted, "I'd rather you ask than steal. There's more than enough to go around." He smiled generously. It was only now that Mary noticed his distinct attire, setting him apart from the rest of the men. He wore a sharp blue overcoat adorned with golden applique, complementing his sandy blond hair. His companion, a brunet, donned a deep red cropped jacket with a fringed hem, appearing a little more dishevelled than the older gentleman. And Mary was sure he was a gentleman.
"Well, actually, Captain-" the brunet attempted to barter, yet his ever-interrupting captain spoke above him. "-Not now Lucius. We must take this poor soul for supper." The gentleman stepped forward, and Mary's eyes widened as he reached for her hood, pushing it backwards to reveal her ginger hair, which was partly matted as the curls whipped in the wind. The blond man seemed taken aback.
"A lady?" he questioned, causing his scribe, Lucius, to squint at him, while the woman opposite looked down at her own attire, a very obvious dull red floor-length skirt and a bodice laced up in the front.
Mary and the scribe shared a look before turning back to the blond, a vacant expression on his face. "She's wearing a dress." the brunet quipped, the left side of his mouth raising, in tandem with his eyebrow as his left hand clutched a large intricate book and his right hand pointed flatly towards the girl,
"I don't like to judge, Lucius." The blond retorted, which Mary was almost certain was to save face. However, she hadn't much time to ponder the man's character before he extended his arm for her to take. "Now, m'lady," he paused as he almost forced her delicate hand to wrap around the crook of his inner elbow, "How about a nice cup of tea?" he proposed, swiftly pivoting to lead the way back onto the ship. The brunet stomped after them, muttering a little plea of salvation.
