Here's some general info about The Cabin By The Border (the AU @mothhq and I cooked up for @soulsmake)!

THE GAME:

Early into their vacation, the players stage a ritual that triggers the start of Infection; it functions essentially the same here as it does on-server. The key function of the game here is to determine a single winner through shared suffering, but Infection was only one of several possible "game" outcomes chosen by the players in the cabin (more on that later).

THE PLAYERS:

We’re working with a cast of 14 artimators (trying to write every single participant would be impossible unfortunately) and squeezing in cameos wherever we can fit them! the main cast includes (in order of appearance above):

THE SECRET:

Unbeknownst to the players (yet), a SHADOW CORPORATION is tracking their game progress and influencing the decisions they make! The winners of past Life series —along with a cameo here and there—watch over the events of the plot, managing details behind the scenes to appease the Watchers below.

This operation has been running for years already. A pact between the Watchers and the staff keeps the world from devolving into turmoil and chaos, as long as suitable victims for the Watchers’ games are provided each year. The players must make certain choices on their own: the refusal of a final warning before entering the cabin, the type of game they play, and a handful of other details that render them complicit participators.

Also the company installed a big impenetrable forcefield/world border around the area when they arrived so they couldn’t escape even if they tried.

We've kept the movie scene in which an array of objects in the cabin's basement symbolize different outcomes for our cast: Infection is connected to a set of red candles, but we had a lot of fun coming up with some other objects that could be traced back to past Life series and various Hermitcraft events :]

Its here! @cjskribblez and I worked together on the @soulsmake event to create a fun lil au, I did a bunch of concept sketches and CJ wrote a really cool snippet!

The summary is that we created a story based in an victorian steampunk era in which Jimmy goes missing after looking into a investigation as Martyn one of the detectives who worked along side him takes up the mantle to figure out what happened to him and the others. In the story he goes against Grian, a criminal whose been accused of the act who just wants to get Jimmy back no matter the cost as the two clash against each other to see who can solve the mystery first.

Fingers tapped on a desk, matching in near perfect rhythm with the clock that marred the silence. Martyn had been staring at the same stack of papers for hours now, long enough for the sun high above to sink, leaking its golden rays over the office until they spilled onto the mahogany in front of him. He sighed once more. No work done today, then. The office space he had once shared with his detective partner was now simply too quiet, and the almost silence was driving him mad. He finally stood- as he should have hours ago, and reached for his coat from where it hung on the rack near the door. He didn’t say anything as he left, too wrapped up in his own thoughts to process what the receptionist had said to him until about a block down the road. Something about hoping he got some sleep tonight.

Without thinking, or perhaps with too much thinking, Martyn found himself back right where he had last seen him.

“I’ve done it! Martyn! I finally have a lead!” Jimmy had yelled excitedly, yanking Martyn from his focus on the report he had been writing. “Tim, can’t you see I’m in the middle of-?” He blinked. “Wait…. For your shelved case?” “Yes! I-” He paused, looking momentarily offended. “Hey. I never said it was shelved, that was just because the old chief- ugh! Nevermind that, look!” He excitedly pushed Martyn’s stacks of papers aside to slam down an obscenely large folder where they had been, and Martyn barely had time to move his well of ink before it made a mess of everything. “Watch the-!”

“So you remember where we left off?” Jimmy started, completely ignoring the chaos he seemed to cause wherever he went. Martyn sighed. “The puppets?” “The puppets! Yes. Nearly 30 people missing or dead now, rogue mechanisms, steam trails that lead to dead ends… It’s the perfect cold case, and I’m going to be the one to solve it.”

“You’re starting to sound even more dramatic than me now. Have you been reciting that one?”

He ignored him. “I’m telling you Martyn- every day I get closer to finding the puppet master. This time I’ve really got something!”

“Right. Something you haven’t told me yet. What is the update exactly?”

“Three days ago.” He said, excitedly flipping through the poorly organized folder. “There was a crane malfunction at the docks. The magnets used to move the shipping containers were suddenly switched to repel, and nearly 4 tons of crates got dumped into the lake. Thankfully nobody was hurt.”

Martyn nodded, humoring him. He remembered hearing about this from the paper two mornings ago. “Didn’t the crane end up exploding?”

“Yes, and that’s exactly how it links to all of the other cases. Exploded machinery, the same golden debris left.”

“Huh…. you’re sure?”

“Positive. I even sent it to forensics to double check. ‘Identical chemical compound’, they said.” He put airquotes with this, looking very proud of himself. “Although they still haven't figured out if that's the reason these machines have been exploding or just a byproduct.”

“A calling card, perhaps…”

“That’s what I was thinking as well.”

Martyn was still skeptical. “How does this connect to the others, though? They haven’t gone after companies or ships at all, all of their targets have been individuals. What was in the shipping crates?”

Jimmy suddenly frowned. “I’m not sure yet. They have not wanted to share. I’m waiting for my warrant to get approved, and the first thing I’m gonna do is get my hands on those shipping manifests….” Martyn nodded, relieved. “You’ve really grown into quite the professional, have you? Patience is a virtue.”

Jimmy beamed. “Hey, we're equals now, remember that!”

Martyn snorted. “Nah, I would have broken in and stolen those manifests from right under their snubby noses already if I were you.”

He shook his head. “Well then its a good thing I’m me then, because I haven't even gotten to the most interesting part yet.”

“And what’s that?”

“The control panel for the crane survived the blast.”

Martyn perked up at that. “Seriously? How? When all of the others…”

“The explosion’s radius was set onto the magnets. I’ll admit, the poor ship took a brunt of it- but apparently the control panel was far enough away to sustain the damage.”

“That’s….. And was it tampered with?” “I’m going to find out tonight!”

“Tonight?”

“That’s right. I sent it to someone trusted to check.”

“Is that so…. What about the people here?”

“Aren’t you the one who always told me it's good to have people outside of the agency having my back too? Now come on, Jellie’s bakery has a deal on bagels today, and I want to celebrate!”

At the time, Martyn put aside his doubts. He was never one to say no to bagels, after all.

The trolley screeched against its metal rails, pulling Martyn back to the present violently. He had nearly stepped off of the sidewalk in his stupor, and now he crossed the cobbled street with a twinge of annoyance and twice the attention to his surroundings. He paid no mind to the bakery, all warm lights and sweet smells, and instead passed, turning into the alleyway behind it. He had seen Jimmy go this way. Seen him take a left, and then disappear in the steam and moonlight.

Martyn hadn’t followed him then, but since he hadn’t stopped wishing he would have. He would trace this maze tonight, just as he had done every night this week, until he found even a single bread crumb that would hint to who Jimmy had met that night. For this- for the sake of finding his friend and bringing him home once more,

Martyn Wood, eighty-third director of the listener detective agency, might even learn patience.

I need to do a post honestly about this but the current status is: Mother Spore is quite a hefty chapters with 3 parts, there's alot I wanna do for it to make it exciting but it means a bit more time is being done. Im at the moment halfway done through part 1 but im away on holiday and I need to get some lines rerecorded so Im hoping I can get part 1 done at least before September (no promises!)

Part 2 and 3 will be the hardest to do so i appreciate everyones patience and hope people enjoy it!
