“Lowly Silvan” is probably the worst line to come out of The Hobbit trilogy

Like we should all be aware that film!thranduil and book!thranduil are two vastly different characters.

Where book!thranduil is a warm, generous, frolicking, picnicking, flower wearing elvenking who cautions against war (because he knows the horrors); film!thranduil is cold, unloving, uncaring, sarcastic, and brings an army ready to go to war for white gems

Lee Pace serves absolute cunt and is fantastic in the role (he really looks like an elf) but really film!thranduil is just frankly an all round unpleasant person (PJ makes thranduil the villain to the basically unambiguously good heroes —the dwarves)

but the one line that absolutely grinds my gears is when he calls Tauriel a “lowly silvan”

now maybe you can massage the film version of the character to align with the book, but if any part of the film is ‘not Thranduil’ it is that line.

Canonically, Thranduil (and his father Oropher, who founded the woodland realm) had no problem with silvans. In fact they wished to become silvan folk (see below ⬇️)

this line was invented purely so film!thranduil could be painted as elitist and discriminatory; which is not like his canon character at all

Thranduil would never say something like this. It is entirely plausible that his wife was silvan, and maybe even his own mother. We don’t have any concrete proof of course but it seems likely.

I just hate this line so much because nothing says I did not consult the text more than asserting Thranduil of all people would call the silvans lowly in such a condescending manner.

I hate IDW1 a lot for different reasons but it is really funny to me that Bumblebee is canonically the catalystic force for 2 con redemptions. The first is Megatron, whose life he saves and then proceeds to call out all of Megs' hypocrisies and the ways in which he's turned against his original ideals and values, and then after saving Megatron and causing him to Re-evaluate Himself he gets killed by Shockwave and very famously starts haunting Starscream as a ghost which also kicks off Starscream's big character arc that would've ended in full redemption if only the writers of this run could've agreed on a single coherent narrative for him

Anyway this is just me saying he's my goat for a reason all it takes is one rude bitchy yellow menace to irrevocably change somebody's life

With the way Dc has canonised that Kyle admires Hal, I really, really like the idea of Kyle originally admiring Superman like he did in canon, and then through the years learning more and more about this dead man who, yes, did massacre an entire corps and destroy himself in grief, but who was also a deeply, deeply kind and good man who loved with his entire heart, with John telling him that Hal helped me grieve my wife and not lose my mind and Guy going Yeah he was a dick but he never gave up on me even I was at my worst and Clark reminiscing that Hal was a good man, I miss him and Wally laughing that Uncle Hal used to sit with me for hours helping me with physics because I never understood it and Alan saying Hal was the best of us, even more than me and Bruce is silent but there’s clear grief for a friend and Kyle then deciding that, yes, this is the man I want to model myself after because who we are at our worst isn’t actually who we are, it’s what we become when we’re free to do what we want and Hal decided to do as much good as he could with his free will, and that’s who Kyle wants to be.

Guy Gardner you are so fucking compelling. what if you grew up in an abusive household and you got out of it and became a fucking lawyer who defended the unjustly imprisoned but then the threats to your life got to be too much so you had to figure out another way to do good in the world and you became a teacher to special needs children instead but you just can't escape tragedy, it's in your blood, it came free with all the fucking kindness inside of you and now you have a life-altering brain injury and the duty to protect an entire planet and nobody takes your physical and emotional trauma fucking seriously and you know they're right, you know you're as stupid and hot-headed as they say you are even though you used to be so much more than any of this. But the one thing, the one fucking thing none of them will ever be able to take away from you is your heart. And it'll fucking kill you one day.
