there's a version of rebecca (1938) that exists in my head as a romantic comedy and i just wish it would burst from my brain fully formed as a book that i could read. these characters deserve it so much after getting their actual home burnt down.

show me their dates in monte carlo where maxim had fallen so in love with the narrator that he abandoned all his plans just for her. he had experienced more happiness in his first hour with her on their first outing than the entire year since his ex-wife died. he was supposed to go on a grand tour of europe but he skipped heading to italy or greece or wherever because he wanted to spend time with her. and the moment he realized that he was about to lose her to new york he immediately asked her to marry him. they spent seven weeks honeymooning around europe having dates in cafes and going on walks and i want to read all about that. maxim didn't think he deserved happiness but couldn't help but want to be around her. she became a beacon in his life and he was a helpless moth to her flame.

the narrator thought about herself that she was boring and plain and uneducated and not of aristocratic breeding enough for him but maxim dissuaded her of all of that since he knew she was a sincere and kind person and that was enough for him. she had spent the past year of her life working for mrs van hopper and her life became centered around such a selfish woman who made everything about herself. then she meets maxim who actually treats her as a person and not as a servant to be ordered around. he didn't care about her class and just said: tell me about yourself, tell me about your hobbies, tell me about your father. mrs van hopper treated her like dirt on the bottom of her shoe and maxim came along and treated her like a person deserving of respect despite not knowing much about her. he spelled her name right, drove her where she wanted to go, and ordered that a wing in his home be renovated for her arrival.

they need each other so much and they didn't know it. they were both drowning in their own lives but saw each other and threw a buoy that they should've used for themselves. they both saw a vision of themselves in the future growing old together, running manderley, having kids and grandkids and resting by the fireplace in the library every night. daphne du maurier i need you to rise from your grave and write me this-

i'm only on chapter four of rebecca by daphne du maurier but maxim already has me blushing and giggling and kicking my feet. okay it helps that im also picturing laurence oliver, the most handsome man who had ever lived, as him since i loved the 1940 film but cmon. he's sending apology notes in the middle of the night, running to her immediately when she spilled water on herself, asking her to dine with him, then apologizing again in person, trying to make her laugh despite being depressed himself and asking her things about herself and her family. the narrator a better woman than me i wouldve been on one knee and proposing to him myself.

i currently feel like an angsty kid/teen's redesign of a wholesome character by turning them edgy with black clothes and piercings and randomly placed scars across their body but instead of getting them through a harrowing and deadly character journey i got them because i'm unathletic and almost died climbing the rusty gate into my house because i lost my keys. i didn't get any cool powers but maybe tetanus

the idea of first love makes me insane. realizing someone is your first love but not your last and all the heartbreak that it entails. what do you mean i have to go out there again and brave my heart once more. how many times do i need it to get broken before i find someone for me. why cant my first love be my last. the clinging the hoping the wishing. knowing youll have to so through so many heartbreaks again.
