Bismuth Spoilers: you've been warned
I have to say, I've never been so pleased to be wrong about a theory before. Bravo, @stevencrewniverse! So after watching Bismuth tonight, I was extremely pleased with the episode. I love the character Bismuth. She's strong, she speaks her mind, she's willing to fight and do anything for her friends. She's morally (and physically) gray though. Unlike the Crystal Gems we know and love, who would only go so far as incapacitating an opponent, Bismuth is willing to do bad things to make things good: she's willing to murder for her ideals. Which, in times of war, CAN be justified. But is it here? First, I'd like to dispel the arguments of "Steven didn't even try to talk to her" or "Bismuth didn't know about everything that happened, it might have changed her mind". Steven tried, and instead of presenting her side, giving justification to Steven, Bismuth immediately turned on him, assuming he was just Rose. She made the first move, and Steven just acted in self defense. And honestly, even if she'd learned about the gem shards, or the cluster, or Lapis and Peridot, Bismuth wouldn't have changed her mind. Bismuth would have used those things as justification. "Look at what the Homeworld does". "They deserve to die for this." That's what she would have said. Even if Bismuth accepted Peridot and Lapis, they'd be the exceptions, not the rule. The reason for this, and the reason I ultimately feel that Steven was right for rebubbling her, is because when Rose told Bismuth she could be anything, she became a fighter and a weapons maker. Yes, she did it for the sake of her friends and the rebellion, but I haven't seen anyone apart from Jaspar discuss war with the passion and fervor that Bismuth does. She's different from Pearl, who fought for Rose's cause and takes pleasure from the art of combat, but not the violence, or even Garnet, who is arguably very violent due to Ruby, but who's violence is tempered by Sapphire's love and desire for understanding. Bismuth takes joy in fighting, in destroying. Her wish wasn't just to see Homeworld defeated, she took pleasure in the idea of their decimation. And regardless of what good the things Bismuth's Breaking Point would be, or her justification for using it, it's completely counterintuitive to everything that makes Steven who he is and what he brings to the Crystal Gems. Steven is a product of his upbringing, not his destiny. The values imparted upon him were as much from Greg as the Crystal Gems, who themselves took their cues from Rose. Ultimately, his view is an amalgam of the human and gem. His is an idealistic message of peace and understandingunderstanding, but fighting for your friends and beliefs. He will fight as hard as he can, but he'll always show mercy when asked. Is it completely correct, or what will finally free the universe from the Diamonds' tyranny? Maybe not, time will tell. But it is not his way to truly murder, to shatter gems. He cares for all life too much, and is willing to fight as hard as Bismuth, who values only those that are on her side. There is no way that Steven could rise as a leader and finish this HIS way while Bismuth was pushing against him. I'm proud that he was strong enough in his beliefs to fight someone for them, even in self defense. And that he kept his promise to Bismuth, and told the gems the truth, of everything, means so much more than just being honest. For the longest time, Steven has been weighed down by the idol of Rose, the perfect general who brought down the Diamonds. But here, as Bismuth said, he proved to be her better. Steven's honesty, transparency, and trust in his comrades where Rose had doubts and secrets will be a key part in the future, and will be what eventually brings Bismuth back as a willing participant in the fight under Steven. Ultimately, I think Steven will come to appreciate the warrior that Bismuth is, that he NEEDS to be, but maybe not quite to Bismuth's extremes. As for the Bisthcourse, this is all I have to offer. Its just my opinion, and though the show is certainly meant to be allegory, my discussion here should be taken as it's written, as a discussion of a children's television program. A very deep one, but still just a tv show. That being said, after I finished the episode, I scrolled down the su bismuth tag, and there were SOOO many more people chiding others for supporting Bismuth than people who actually supported Bismuth. I know this is ironically judgey, but I feel like there are more people in this fandom who just want to be correct in their vision of the show and judge others than people who actually want to discuss and examine the issues as presented. We all need to try to understand one another's viewpoints, and if someone feels differently than me, I find it more rewarding to understand why, even if I still don't agree, than to just drag someone through the mud for having a different opinion. If nothing else, that's something that Steven Universe has instilled in me through these past 100 episodes. Here's to a great milestone, and here's to (hopefully) 100 more!

i just had a horrible thought [spoilers for tonight’s episode]
when bismuth was rattling off the names of the past crystal gems she mentioned “biggs, crazy lace, and snowflake”
snowflake is probably snowflake obsidian but i’m thinking about the other two
“crazy lace” and “biggs” are probably referring to crazy lace agate and biggs jasper
Tumblr media
and i wondered
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Hey, Rose. Look what I got.”
maybe that’s why jasper was so smug
[and if this ends up being true, where the hell is snowflake obsidian?]

Hearing someone say Steven is better than Rose is pretty powerful on so many levels, and this probably doesn’t help with Steven’s confusion over Rose. If there was ever a moment where it’s clear that Steven’s been unfairly saddled with thousands of years of everyone else’s cosmic bullshit, it was right then.

important things we learned from bismuth
- arenas were built for fighters, and spires for intellectuals - gem temples were built for the elite upper-class to enjoy - bismuths are builders - rose was created on earth - the physical weapons of gems can be modified - nephrites were used to pilot ships - rose did not believe in shattering opposing gems - garnet and pearl never mentioned their fallen comrades to amethyst - amethyst’s whip is a rare weapon - steven and rose share similar core values - the crystal gems used to spar before battle - garnet and bismuth once took down three battalions of quartz soldiers - pearl’s energy projection developed post-war - bismuth created rose’s sword - other amethysts fought for the crystal gems during the war - bubbled gems have no awareness of time passing - like garnet, bismuth can withstand extreme temperatures - rose lied to keep the gems safe - homeworld has always had more advanced technology than the crystal gems

I was wrong in the best of ways
Bismuth
Ok ok my friends sit down and let me tell you how much I love Bismuth’s Character Design.
Tumblr media
What is a Bismuth?
Bismuth: A brittle pinkish-white crystalline metallic element having low thermaland electrical conductivity, which expands on cooling. It is widely used in alloys, esp low-melting alloys in fire safety devices; its compounds are used in medicines. Symbol: Bi; atomic no: 83; atomic wt:208.98037; valency: 3 or 5; relative density: 9.747; melting pt:271.4°C; boiling pt: 1564±5°C A natural bismuth that is not man made is usually a silver gray ore like this here
Tumblr media
But when it is oxidized and added to heat it gets that rainbow color to it that bismuth is commonly known for
Tumblr media
What Does this have to do with Steven Universe Bismuth?
Bismuth is a metallic crystal. Bismuth is also commonly used in alloys. and what is an alloy you may ask? An Alloy is a metal made by combining two or more metallic elements, especially to give greater strength or resistance to corrosion.
so when you what her in the forge collecting metals and using the heat and herself, She is literally creating alloys with other metals and herself to create her weapons.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Because Bismuth is a metallic crystal it can be melted and shaped into different forms. Just like how she can shape shift her arms into the tools she needs

Not to mention her colors match both oxidized and non oxidized bismuth is pretty awesome too
Tumblr media
Bismuth is an amazing gem and you can’t convince me otherwise
