Cuban Makel Zamora began his sermon telling the story of his minister who taught him what it means to sacrifice for others - the primary theme of Mark 8: 31-38. This minister travels 20 miles early in the morning in an old bicycle to preach at 9 am, to then travel another 20 miles to preach in another congregation. He frequently bikes 40 miles just to find juice for the Lord Supper. Seven years ago a freshmen from the Dominican Republic stopped to tell me all about her dental experience at our clinic, teeth cleaning and cavities filled. She excitedly added, “And it was free; it did not cost me anything!” These two photos are of a student and her daughter from Cuban just yesterday. Many in Latin America have very limited medical and dental care. When an incoming freshmen arrives he is given a physical and medical/dental chart is made up on the student. Baxter aspires to care for the student’s spiritual and physical well-being during their four years here. I didn’t have the heart to tell the Dominican that her dental work was not for free; you donors make it possible that the student doesn’t have to pay for the service. The hope that Jesús brought to the two is what He sought to give His spiritually blind Apostles. Together Again … Serving. Our second mission brigade was a group of Abilene Christian University students and professors. They spent 10 days working in Nicaragua and Honduras. Then their last 4 days were at Baxter. 37 years ago Dodd Roberts, the ACU director of the group, and I served together in the 1984 Global Mission Campaign in Buenos Aires. These campaigns were come conducted in 9 major cities in Latin American utilizing Baxter students and teachers, area missionaries, and a chorus from ACU. Dodd was student who sang in the chorus; while Dianna and I supported the effort as local missionaries in Buenos Aires.
