Mia's P.O.V:

The final bell rang through Hawkins High as I hurried through the hallways, trying to find my math class. Finally, after a while, I found it. Although the final bell had already rung, the teachers had closed their classroom doors.

With a sigh, I knocked on the door loudly enough for the teacher to hear. "Well hello there, you're Mia, aren't you?" A woman in her 40s said as she opened the classroom door.

"Yes, I am," I said, nodding at her. "Well, come on in," she said, opening the door wide for me to enter the classroom.

As I walked in, I noticed all eyes staring at me. "Class, this is Mia. She's our new student. She came from North Carolina," the Math Teacher said as she introduced me to the whole class.

"I'm Mrs. Newton. It's nice to meet you, Mia," she said with a smile. "It's nice to meet you too," I smiled back at her.

"So are you sure she's not an illegal alien?" someone said out loud.

I turned my head to see who asked and saw a boy who looked like Rob Lowe with a mullet, dirty blonde hair, and blue eyes. He looked cute but mean.

He was sitting next to a girl with brown eyes and curly brown hair, and they were laughing together after he asked that question.

"Billy Hargrove and Heather Holloway! That's enough," Mrs. Newton scolded them. "I bet you two don't want to repeat the 12th grade again, now do you?" She frowned at them.

"I don't mind holding you guys back again, I will do it," she added, causing the whole class to go "Ooooooooo."

"No, ma'am," I heard Billy say in an unpleasant voice, not happy that Mrs. Newton had called him and Heather out in front of the whole class.

"That's what I thought," Mrs. Newton said and then showed me where my desk was.

Fortunately, it was far away from Billy and Heather. However, I noticed that both of them were giving me glares throughout the whole math class period. This was going to be a long year, and it was only November. I started to count down the days until Thanksgiving Break in my head.

Mia's P.O.V

I woke up with a sigh and slammed my alarm clock off. It read 7:00 am. It was time to get up. I felt anxious just thinking about my first day at Hawkins High School. Oh, how I wish I could skip my first day and just avoid it. How many days until summer?

I got dressed, brushed my teeth, and then did my hair. I got my books and my bag ready. My dad and my stepmom were already gone. They left for work an hour ago, I suppose. I didn’t want to ride the school bus, so I decided to walk to school. It was a five-minute walk to Hawkins High School, which wasn’t that bad.

During the whole walk to school, I put on my headphones and started listening to The Beatles on my Walkman. As I got to the school, my stomach turned into a knot. Hawkins High School. The school looked big to me. I noticed it was just across from Hawkins Middle School. A lot of students were walking past me, talking to their friends, laughing, and chatting at the same time. I wish I had friends here so I wouldn’t be a loner.

I pulled my headphones out as I pressed stop on my Walkman and wrapped my headphones around my Walkman and shoved it into my bag. I made my way to the office.

“Hello. Can I help you?” The office lady said.

“Yes. My full name is Mia Guadalupe Hernandez. I’m new here at Hawkins High School. I’m here to pick up my schedule,” I explained to her.

“Okay, let’s see…” The office lady said, looking through a pile of papers.

“Ah, here it is,” she said, handing me my schedule. I nodded and grabbed my schedule from her.

“Thank you,” I said with a smile.

“You’re welcome,” the office lady said.

“Welcome to Hawkins High School,” she added before I left the office.

I looked at my schedule. I had Math Class first. Then I had English, School Newspaper, Lunch, and then Science. Hopefully today should go smoothly.

"Welcome to Hawkins High School." The words echoed like a haunting melody in my ears.

Mia’s P.O.V

Over the weekend, I went out and bought more Beatles posters and pictures, which I hung on the walls of my room. I also added butterfly stickers and flower petals to the walls. Additionally, I purchased a pink curtain for my new window.

Seeing the results in my room made me much happier. However, on Sunday night, I felt uneasy thinking about my first day at Hawkins High School. I knew I had to go to the office on Monday morning to pick up my new schedule. Thoughts raced through my mind about my first day at a new school. I wondered if everyone would be friendly, if my classmates would be nice, if I'd make a new friend, what my teachers would be like, and what my classes would be. I also worried about getting lost, being late, getting picked on, and surviving the rest of the school year.

I laid out my clothes for the next day and tried to calm my nerves. My dad and stepmom reassured me earlier that my first day would go well, but deep down, I wasn't so sure. I thought that starting at a new school where I didn't know anyone was daunting.

I eventually settled into bed, feeling the silence in the house as my dad and stepmom had already gone to bed. Despite their reassurances, I wished I didn't have to start school tomorrow. I missed my old high school and wished I was homeschooled or had dropped out. The school seemed pointless to me; I only liked my friends and favorite teachers at my old school.

As I closed my eyes, I imagined myself going back to 1963 and snuggling with one of my favorite Beatles members, which helped ease my anxieties about the first day at my new school.

After what felt like an eternity on the road, we finally reached Hawkins, Indiana. I desperately wished we could turn back and return to North Carolina.

However, I knew there was no going back. Clutching my Walkman, we pulled into the driveway of a charming little house. "We're finally here!" announced my dad, turning off the car. He and my stepmom appeared relieved to have arrived at our new home. However, I refused to call this place "home."

As I got out of the car and started unloading my boxes, I felt a knot in my stomach, wondering if it was too late to return to North Carolina.

Upon entering the house, I noticed the fresh scent of wood. My dad led me upstairs to show me my new room.

"Here it is!" he exclaimed, opening the door to a nice but empty room. I muttered a halfhearted response as I started unpacking and setting up my new space.

As I carefully arranged my belongings and hung posters, my dad and stepmom helped set up my bed. Eventually, the room was all set up.

After what felt like hours of unpacking, my stepmom decided to order a pizza for dinner.

We eagerly dug into the delicious pizza and sipped on cold Coca-Colas. While my dad and stepmom excitedly discussed our new life in Hawkins, I couldn't help but long for home in North Carolina. I wondered if I could transfer back after graduating from high school.

As I prepared to move to Hawkins, Indiana, I couldn't help but wonder how I would fit in with the new environment. All I could anticipate was that it would be challenging. Before I knew it, my bags and luggage were already packed.

My father found a higher-paying job in Hawkins, Indiana at the same company where he was working. On the other hand, my stepmom found a sewing job there that she absolutely loved during the week that she and my father visited Hawkins to find their "perfect" home.

My parents have been divorced since I was 14. After the divorce was finalized, my mom moved out of state, and I have been living with my father ever since.

I'm 17 years old, about to turn 18 in a few months. It was difficult for me to leave all my friends behind in North Carolina.

From Peter and Ann to Matt, Jeff, Daniel, and even Shay, they were all my friends here, and I had to say my final goodbyes to them yesterday before the big move to Hawkins.

I promised them all that I would keep in touch through letters, calls, and probably visiting them during Thanksgiving and Christmas break.

We all got into the car and started driving off. With a heavy heart, I softly bid farewell to North Carolina with a sad wave.

The clouds in the clear blue sky looked so beautiful as I looked up. I was going to miss my hometown dearly. I knew things wouldn't be the same.

I wouldn't see my friends at school anymore or be able to hang out with them after school. I wouldn't be able to visit my favorite local vintage store or the nearby bookstore to buy my favorite books.

I would miss going to the local record store and seeing the owners there. They knew me well as I frequently visited. Before leaving North Carolina, I promised them that I would write to them, and they promised me they would send me postcards and write back. They even said that I was their number one favorite customer and that they would miss me so much.

As a goodbye gift, they gave me the Abbey Road album by The Beatles, which I was thrilled to have. It completed my Beatles record collection.

I'm a huge Beatles fan. I love their music as well as Olivia Newton-John, but my preference lies with The Beatles. I do listen to other artists such as Madonna, Prince, Missing Persons, and a lot of 80s singers. I also enjoy 50s and 60s music, but as I mentioned, The Beatles are my favorite. Their music has brought me peace and joy, especially during the challenging process when my dad and stepmom announced that we were moving to Hawkins.

I wish we didn't have to move to Hawkins, I thought to myself, feeling gloomy. I sighed softly and put on my headphones, then started playing "Across the Universe" by The Beatles on my Walkman.

I looked out the window as I listened to the song.

"Nothing's gonna change my world Nothing's gonna change my world Nothing's gonna change my world Nothing's gonna change my world."

I hope to make new friends in Hawkins. I hope everyone is welcoming there. I truly hope it's a nice place to live. Little did I know that moving to Hawkins was going to change my life.
