Assessment team (year 1, first placement)
November 2019 - February 2020
Pros:
Slow introduction to the services offered
Opportunity to work in A&E mental health liaison
Opportunity to work in the male inpatient ward
Introduced to the assessment process and services that are available
Learnt how to write up assessments, SBARs and risk assessments
Shifts were 9-5
Cons:
Not many opportunities to develop clinical skills
I personally didn’t enjoy working 9-5, I prefer the 07.00-19.30 shifts
The things to do were very repetitive
Opportunities to attend assessments were rare, I had to force myself into them
I was treated like a secretary, writing up the assessments but not necessarily allowed to go into them
Some staff members were not willing to have a student attend the assessments

I have worked in an assessment team, a female inpatient ward, a male inpatient ward and an orthopaedic ward.
I have PTSD, depression and anxiety (querying CPTSD and awaiting a referral).
My next placement is a mixed dementia ward which works closely with a hospice.
I will be doing individual posts on how I found each placement as well as the kind of workload and opportunities for learning.
