“Responsibility to yourself means refusing to let others do your thinking, talking, and naming for you; it means learning to respect and use your own brains and instincts; hence, grappling with hard work. It means that you do not treat your body as a commodity with which to purchase superficial intimacy or economic security; for our bodies to be treated as objects, our minds are in mortal danger. It means insisting that those to whom you give your friendship and love are able to respect your mind. It means being able to say, with Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre: ‘I have an inward treasure born with me, which can keep me alive if all the extraneous delights should be withheld or offered only at a price I cannot afford to give.’”
‘On Lies, Secrets, and Silence: Selected Prose 1966–1978: Claiming an Education,’ Adrienne Rich

no other person on this planet was made for you, they were made for themselves. love is all about choices. no one is going to be perfect for you, and i think we need to stop raising everyone on the belief that someone out there, just one other person in the whole world, was “made for you” because it isn’t true. no one is made for you, besides you. other people belong to themselves. if you want to make it work with someone, it’s about hard work, understanding, compassion, communication, and choice

wear your favourite outfit with your tallest shoes. order that ridiculous drink and ask the server to add espresso. run that extra mile and see the river. make your favourite breakfast and add more flavour. clean your room with ghibli music in the background. do your homework with your feet on your desk. live life to its fullest extent, but don't push off your responsibilities. find your balance. dont settle for mediocre. take care.

one day you will wake up in the morning feeling calm and content in every corner of your body. you will spend the day doing things that remind you that your life is not perfect, but its little details make it wonderful all the same. you will visit places you’ve come to love, the little bakery, the library, the old bookstore, and the park, where you have picnics every weekend. you will paint often, read piles of new books, take candid photographs, bake your own bread, make your own strawberry jam, and write your own stories. your home will be cozy and welcoming, with plants, cushions, warm lighting and a fluffy cat that sleeps on your lap. there will be flowers and fruit trees in the garden, and a seat where you can read and watch the clouds, surrounded by sunlight and the sounds of nature. the things you once cried about are so far away in your memory that you barely think about them anymore. and you will sleep at night to ease the good kind of tiredness, the kind you feel on summer evenings after a day at the beach.

good morning to people with sweatshirts for universities they never attended, people with a collection of empty notebooks, people with niche academic interests no one else seems to care about, people who never outgrew their middle school mythology phase, people who can’t seem to make a dent in their TBR piles, and the guy who does edits on Wikipedia

Shopping for laptops fucking sucks ‘cause I don’t know shit about computers. I’ve never had a computer with a functional webcam or microphone or the ability to play computer games made later than 2005 or a speaker that could play anything loud enough to hear from more than a foot away. How the hell should I know what I want?!

tell people how you feel about them. literally. if someone made you smile today, tell them. if a thought crosses your mind about how much someone means to you, tell them. i’m 99.9% sure the recipient will be overjoyed to know that they were thought of in such a positive light. your words and your actions make a difference.

you are allowed to be proud of the victories that no one else can see. like showering without completely hating your body, not breaking into tears at the thought of the future, talking yourself out of a dark mindset, calming yourself down in public, or like waking up every single day and choosing life. be proud of the progress no matter if it is visible for others or not. you’re doing great, keep up the good work!

Gentle reminder that often creativity decides to hibernate for a bit.
It’s okay. You’re not broken, you’re resting, and much like spring, creativity comes back.

yes offense but someone who isnt well versed in social justice discourse and has somewhat ignorant views of that stuff but who still genuinely cares about other people and actually does something to help them even if they dont necessarily “understand” them will litchrally always be superior to someone who thinks of other peoples suffering as an intellectual exercise and is only interested in developing their knowledge of theory and having all the Correct Opinions to look smart online or in their undergrad philosophy class lol
