It's the persistent sense of hope
So I've been thinking about a discussion over on the Discworld reddit recently
Basically someone was like 'Discworld has become my go to cosy read'
And someone was like 'Disword isn't cosy it's actually very satirical and can be quite scathing and not escapist fluff'
But to me I would also class Discworld a cosy/comforting read.
And I think the fact the series does go to some pretty dark places is part of why I find it comforting, because Discworld doesn't shy away from the fact that bad things happen and you have to just get on with it and the fact it's full of characters who are often kind of fed up with everything but still go and do the Right Thing anyway even if it's hard and I actually find that more comforting than if it was like 'Oh nothing bad ever happens' setting.

Well, it’s finally finished.  It was a genuinely satisfying project. I present you Ankh Morpork in the guise of Google Maps.

my creative writing prof also HATES fantasy. as in if she asks for an example of symbolism in a book, and you give something from a fantasy novel, she’ll ask for an example from a “non-commercial book” instead.
I dunno man, people can have preferences, but the second you discount the artistic merit of sci fi and fantasy I stop taking your opinion seriously. and there’s such a big culture in Canada of only valuing literary fiction, to the point where one of our biggest authors, Margaret Atwood, refused for a while to classify her books as sci fi or fantasy. she said they were “speculative fiction”, which is entirely separate and very highbrow (sarcasm).
and I could go on about how Octavia Butler and Ursula Le Guin wrote books every bit as intellectual (and honestly, even more so) than their literary counterparts, but I am also an enjoyer of schlock!! I think there’s artistic merit in animorphs, and in isekais where a japanese schoolgirl reincarnates into a magical spider who has to level up like it’s a video game! it’s like with everything, you can’t draw a clean line that separates ‘art’ from ‘non-art’ or even ‘lesser art’, and pretending you can do so just makes you look ignorant and goofy. in my opinion.

It’s kind of amazing to me that Terry Pratchett started out writing novels that don’t even pass the Bechdel test and ended up at books like Equal Rites and Monstrous Regiment. I truly believe that the best writers end up being the ones who pay attention, educate themselves, notice flaws and patterns, not because someone yelled at them for not being social justice-y enough, but because they want their writing to really connect with people. Part of me is glad I’m only just beginning to get into the discworld novels, because I feel like Terry Pratchett had a lot to say about the world, and that I could spend MY entire life listening to him and what he said with his.

Currently thinking about the bit in Going Postal where Moist meets Sacharissa and immediately internalizes “Ring on finger but goes by ‘Miss Cripslock,’ probably has Views, Do Not Attempt To Kiss Hand” like he has a conman’s version of Terminator vision where he’s constantly mathematically figuring out how to ingratiate himself to someone

the thing that makes me the most crazy about night watch & young vetinari is that at the end of feet of clay vetinari has a conversation with drumknott where drumknott says umm let me find it. he says, “The thought occurs, sir, that if Commander Vimes did not exist you would have had to invent him.” & VETINARI fucking says, “You know, Drumknott, I rather think I did.” but in night watch. NIGHT WATCH. WE LEARN THAT VIMES MADE VETINARI TOO! the young man slinking on rooftops was still more an assassin than patrician, who knew how to disguise himself & how to kill but not how to work a crowd or how to read a person’s heart or how change comes & is brought to anhk-morpork… sgt. keel & the glorious 25th of may MADE vetinari. & then vetinari made vimes

the discworld's spiritual figures are powered by belief, right? you believe in a god and therefore that god exists, it takes shape around belief, etc. do you guys think if twoflower believed rincewind to be a real wizard hard enough rincewind would be able to become what twoflower believes he is
