There had been something about Suhana that had stayed with him since the night of the cruise. Maybe it was the fact that she was so honest in saying whatever it was that she felt? Or maybe it was because she was extremely beautiful. Whatever it was–he knew during their second meeting that he wanted to ensure a third meeting for sure. “I’m sure it will get chilly…so I like the way you’re thinking,” he grinned at her as he noted the size of the blanket she’d brought which would definitely work best for both of them rather than just the one. “I’m glad to hear that,” Abhi said quickly, feeling quite relieved at that admission and knowing that he got something right when he was prepping for this little date. 

“Homemade things?” Abhi was a sucker for anything homemade and maybe it was because his mother was so good at making anything and everything but he loved the flavour of everything homemade. “Alright so while you share those snacks and homemade things with me, I’m going to grab us a plate of tacos. Any preferred flavour? They’ve got a couple good ones.” He held out his phone where the food truck’s menu was already pulled up. Abhi handed her the phone once she was seated on the blanket and knelt down so that he was close enough to hear her choices before he went off to get them some food from the truck.

“Yeah, homemade things. I don’t know how passionate you are about carbs seeing as you’re…” Suhana stopped herself just short of insinuating the man was gorgeous and thus probably didn’t ingest carbs like other mere mortals (such as herself). “I have these little sandwiches that I whipped up really quick, but I had some time after work today so I made some cookies. There’s also chips in here and a couple water bottles as well. Oh! And strawberries because I sort of tried to add in some healthy things.” It was hard for Suhana to equate a movie night with healthy food though. “Oh! Um… I’ll just take the chicken tacos if they’ve got those. Oh maybe some tortilla chips and guac? That sounds delicious. But hurry back!... Um... The movie’s probably starting soon.”

It was only when the woman’s skirt was mentioned that Romy looked down, eyebrows raised as she saw more legs than skirt and she shook her head. “I do not envy you one bit on the ride.” She chuckled. She was wearing jeans and she’d already been poked and jabbed by the hay through the fabric. She couldn’t imagine not having any barrier between her skin and the offending grass. “Did they also assure you that the hay won’t try to get to third base? Because I think they may be lying to you.” She mused, tone light as a slight smile twitched at the corners of her lips at the joke. “I told my daughter the same thing, that we’d only be here for an hour or so, and yet…” She looked back towards the group of playing children with a fond smile as her eyes quickly found the five year old. “We’ve been here for two and a half hours and counting. This will be our third hayride. I’m about this close to promising her I’ll buy her her own tractor to get out of here without a fuss.” 

“Yeah honestly, I’m beginning to regret this outfit for many reasons, but the hay and the cold are definitely my top two. No offense to you obviously, but I do not envy having a kid right now. The thought of going on the hay ride even one more time, much like three times over just sounds horrid.” Suhana snorted, laughing at the thought of owning a tractor in Vancouver. “You might have to make plans to move to the countryside if you get one. I’m not sure you’ll have much luck trucking that thing around the city.”

Nolan had an appreciation for fashion the same as any aesthetic art form, but that didn’t mean he was ready to become a clothes designer. Still, that hadn’t stopped Suhana from deciding they needed to learn a new skill, and now… here they were. He supposed that maybe he might learn enough to  make Danny’s costume from scratch next year, as if that would be enough to make up for the fact that they only got to see each other every other weekend…

He rolled his eyes at his oldest friend’s obvious, and slightly aggressive, excitement, long since learning to go along with her once she got her mind set on something. “Yes, yes, Anna Wintour needs our mock-ups by 5, right?” he teased, though with Suhana’s attitude, he wouldn’t be surprised if she somehow made that happen.

Suhana was all for learning how to put a costume together on a budget and this fun activity might just teach her a few things about sewing and patching things together. Plus, there was the added bonus of getting to do something fun with her oldest and bestest friend. He was always the perfect victim to drag along to things like this, but luckily for her, he was also down for trying something new. “I’m in it to win it, Barnes. Nobody’s saying ‘auf wiedersehen’ to me today.”

Darius was enjoying himself since he moved to Vancouver. It brought back many memories of visiting over the years as a kid. Perhaps, at times, too many memories as it reminded him greatly of his sister. He was dressed as Rooster from Top Gun, though it was a popular costume, he didn’t mind. As someone that only moved to town a few months ago, Halloween hadn’t exactly be on the forefront of his mind. Wandering around by the haunted hayride, Darius was on the look out for people that he might know but at the same time, he was just enjoying himself and trying to make the most of his time off. He had just grabbed a drink from one of the trucks when he spotted what he thought was a familiar face. He did a double take, realizing that it was in fact the high school math teacher at the high school he worked at. Figuring since they met eyes, he knew it was only polite to go say hello. Darius made his way to her, drink still in hand. “Suhana, hey,” he greeted her, “enjoying the Halloween festivities?” 

This wasn’t awkward at all. She had to keep repeating the mantra in her head in the hopes that she might actually believe those words. She was failing rather miserably. He was coming toward her now which meant she couldn’t just pretend it didn’t happen and rush off. Suhana put her best calm and totally not freaked out look on, blissful smile and all as Darius made his way over. “Hi!” she greeted a little too enthusiastically, “I didn’t think I’d be seeing you here.” Clearly. “I’m having a great time. Some of my students are volunteering at the event for their community service hours and mentioned that I stop by for a bit. What about you? Are you enjoying yourself? You look great!”

Abhimanyu had been reaching forward to pull her in for a hug when he’d first spotted her but she had a lot of things with her which made that just seem awkward and so he opted for a casual pat on the back. A pat on the back? Who was he? Her uncle? This was strange. Maybe this was shaping up to be a weird thing even if he’d been almost sure she’d been as into the whole thing as he had. “Parking was a nightmare,” he agreed with a shrug before pointing to the patch of grass that was situated right in middle for an optimal viewing experience. He’d mapped it out with a plaid blanket that he’d placed on the ground, a mini cooler bag that had a couple different options in it. However he spotted her blanket as well along with a massive bag and had to wonder if she’d assumed he wouldn’t have been prepared for this outing. “I like how you brought a blanket too,” he chuckled softly, hoping to lighten the mood between them. “Oh and uhhI have that cooler bag with a couple of different options for drinks since I didn’t know if you liked coolers or beer? Or just sparkling water?” That was the whole point of first dates though–wasn’t it? To get to know the other so that for the next one, he’d know more about her.

She wasn’t sure what she was walking into and wanted to be prepared in case he thought she was going to sit on the damp grass on a late October night. Thankfully for her, he was actually prepared and it looked like he had drinks covered for their evening as well. “Well, if it gets chilly then we have a spare to keep us warm.” Not that he had to snuggle with her or anything. She wasn’t opposed. He looked like the kind of guy that was always nice and warm, but good heavens she was not going to embarrass herself by saying that out loud. “I like it all. I brought some snacks and homemade things for us too, but I won’t lie… The smells coming from that taco cart are divine.” She let him lead the way, getting settled in on the picnic blanket and pulling out some of the snacks from the tote.

The things she did for her daughter. With a heavy sigh, Romy’s gaze stayed fixed on her five year old daughter who was currently running around with a gaggle of other children while their parents waited in line for the hayride. Her patience was running short, through no fault of her daughter or anyone really, but Halloween had never been an easy time of year for her. It’d always been full of disappointment, so much so that prior to having Bianca she refused to celebrate both the holiday and her birthday. But she was trying to forget all of that, leave the past in the past and create a better future for both herself and her daughter. But hayrides? 

“I never understood the concept of the hay ride, you know?” She said to the woman next to her in the line. “I mean sure, it’s fun or whatever getting pulled around by a tractor and everything but hay is not comfortable. Just little spikes stabbing you in the as– butt.” She quickly corrected herself, just in case Bianca could hear her. “I had half a mind to bring a pillow along since, for some reason, my daughter is obsessed with the hayrides. We’ve already been on it twice.” 

Suhana was beginning to regret wearing her costume to the Haunted Hayride this evening. Not only was it chilly out, but there were so many younger children around that she wished she’d brought her jacket to cover up and look somewhat respectable. In her defense she wasn’t planning on staying very long because she did have somewhere else she had to be tonight, but even the time she was here meant that for the next hour or two every mother would shield their child away from her as if she were the devil incarnate. Except for this one woman who was making her feel more at ease the more she talked. “Oh I know. This skirt and the hay are just… a big no no. I’m just here with a friend for a little while, but they assured me we weren’t going to be here too long.”

Abhimanyu was not someone who normally got nervous about dates and such and yet here he was. He usually felt quite calm and collected, perhaps because in the back of his mind he already knew where that particular relationship was headed. However in this one with Suhana…he had no such thought process. He had enjoyed her company in the previous two times they’d spoken and met and so he wanted to ensure this time they were actually meeting one another so neither could run off the way they had on the cruise and the way he’d had to leave from the high school. 

Rubbing his palms on his thighs, he waited patiently, ignoring the way the cloth of his jeans felt underneath his skin. He ended up taking another deep breath, this time glancing at his phone wondering if she’d be coming or if he would end up feeling like she wasn’t going to stand him up. Abhimanyu was extremely tempted to pull out his phone and message his younger brother, in need of a little courage when he caught sight of her and found the smile on his lips grow automatically. “And here I was beginning to think you weren’t going to show up.”

Suhana was truly a teacher at heart which meant she was prepared for these kinds of outings. She had her favorite picnic blanket tucked under one arm and a tote bag full of snacks swung over the other. She knew there would be food available at the event, but in the case she didn’t want any of those things at least she was prepared. Plus, it gave her something to think about instead of casually freaking out over the fact that this was probably definitely a date, unlike their previous impromptu encounters. “Hi!” she exhaled heavily, “Yeah sorry… Parking was a nightmare, but I’m here. Did you find us a good spot?” She would have given him a decent greeting if she didn’t have her hands full at the moment.

“Took you long enough! They’re about to close the sign ups. I had to bribe the gal working the event with a pumpkin spice latte.” There was no way Suhana was going to go through the spooky season without spending time with one of her oldest friends. They were spending Halloween together since they were young and stupid and that certainly wasn’t going to change just because they were adults. “Come on, let’s go. Let’s go. We don’t have time to waste here!” she encouraged, her tone slightly pushy as the teacher in her made an appearance. Suhana knew very little when it came to making clothes or mending clothes or doing anything even remotely related to clothes, but she hoped whoever was supposed to be teaching them was good at their job.

It was nice to dress up once a year and be creative with your costume. In Suhana’s case, she was just over dealing with teenagers who were hopped up on sugar all day and was looking forward to getting dressed up as a sexy school teacher. It was her own personal joke in a way– that she was just going as herself that year. The yardstick in her hand completed the look, the teacher loving the thrift find of the plaid skirt that only showed off the goods even more. She was going to a Halloween party, but told another friend she’d meet up with them at the Haunted Hayride for a bit before heading over to the other event.

Suhana was getting a caramel apple from one of the food vendors when she spotted someone she really didn’t want seeing her like this. It really shouldn’t have been a big deal that her boss and the principal of the school she worked at was here, but for Suhana it was. She didn’t want him seeing her like this. She looked over quickly to see if he’d disappeared into the crowd so she could make her big escape, but too late. It was truly just her luck that he happened to look right in her general direction when she did and she could tell that he’d seen her too.

Abhimanyu hadn’t expected to run into her again like this but was definitely glad it had happened. At least…so far. A part of him knew there was a very likely chance that before he could even make his way towards her–she would be gone and they wouldn’t get a chance to even speak again. When he caught her gaze–he’d been hopeful that she knew who he was and sure enough, there she was giving him a cute little wave which helped his self-esteem. Abhi was tempted to see if he could mouth something to her, telling her it was nice to see her again but before he could–the bell rang. He watched as most of the students began to disperse from the gymnasium leaving him with most of the other adults which also meant that Suhana was there standing just a few feet away. 

He was about to approach her, make some funny comment about how twice in one week had to be a coincidence of some sort when the principal appeared in his line of sight. The older man was talking about making this a tradition and how he wanted the students to reach out to him. At that point, Abhi didn’t even know how much he’d agreed to when he caught sight of Suhana once more in the gymnasium. “Ah Miss. Dhawan, thank you for bringing the students in for the assembly, I’d like to introduce you to a local Vancouver firefighter. This is Abhimanyu Vohra, and Mr. Vohra–this is one of her fine teachers here at Kitsalano Secondary School, Miss. Dhawan.” With that the principal was called away and so Abhi stuck his hand out. “Good to meet you officially Miss. Dhawan.” 

She stood by and listened as he spoke, watching the students enamored by the firefighter. It was clear he was good at what he did and was proud to tell everyone about all it entailed. When the bell rang she figured she would stick around at least to say hello to the man she’d met on the cruise not even a week earlier. How crazy that he should end up here of all places where she worked. She would have accused him of stalking her, but knew that this was just one huge coincidence. She was making her way toward him when the principal beckoned her forth, an easy way into the present conversation.

She laughed at Abhi’s comment, “Yes, it’s nice to officially meet you as well. Mujhe nahin pata tha ke tum firefighter ho. You neglected to mention that at our first meeting or maybe you did and I was just so in awe of your incredibly impressive height.” Their first little chat had revolved around just how tall the man was and even now as Suhana spoke to the man she had to literally look up to meet his eyes. “Kind of funny na? That we both should meet again so soon? And it’s been what– five days I think?”

“Ah, that sucks,” Hiten said, moving their book away. They had once known how to fix cars, still did, though they had left all their tools behind and even if they wanted to help, what use were they without their kit. They simply smiled, nodding. “Ait, sure, yeah, why not, no better place to camp out at than a place that sells food and drink,” they said, standing and leaning into the counter to be slightly closer to her. They smiled, slightly confused at the introduction, but invested now. “Hiten, nice to meet you,” they said. “Want some coffee?”

“Yeah, but hey, at least this place was close by. Otherwise I would have been sitting on the side of the road by myself while it got dark.” She did have pepper spray on her, but Suhana never wanted to be in a position where she would actually have to use it on someone. “Exactly. In a way I kind of lucked out.” Their offer of coffee made her brighten up almost instantly. “I would love some. I’m going to buy some snacks too. Might as well rack up a huge bill while I’m sitting around.“

Kasey did enjoy her day job, working at the gym was fun to her. Helping others learn to work out, and be better person and a heather person too.  Working out the gym did make people feel better and she loved that. To help a person become heathy and some able to care for themselves.  “More reasons why I do not work around kids of any age” she laughed lightly. Kids were fine, teenagers too but she really wasn’t around them a lot too.  “I’d get into trouble telling them all off” she joked but really she be blunt to tell a person to shut up or relax any time.  She went over to her and helped line her arm up better for the better lift.   “I did break up a fight at the bar last night” she chuckled a moment at her.  “Like the most basic two guy hitting on a girl thinking they both like had had or some dumb crap” she rolled her eyes. 

“Yeah I get that from a lot of people.” Even people who had kids were thankful that they didn’t have to deal with their own children for 6-8 hours a day. “I think you really have to want to be a teacher if you’re thinking of being one. I thankfully like kids so it makes my job a little easier. I know a couple teachers who are just biding their time until retirement or are probably looking to make a career change, but don’t want to and it’s tough seeing really gifted individuals just wasting their time doing something they don’t want to do.” Suhana could think of at least one or two who were constantly overwhelmed or stressed out or facing some sort of crisis due to their job and wished they would just make it easier on themselves and let it go. “Ew that’s… how is it that people still do that kind of shit?” she questioned, genuinely confused as to what they were thinking.

How Abhi managed to draw the short stick this time around–he had no clue. The man normally had incredible luck and would never get forced to give talks on fire safety or even about their career. He’d always somehow be let off the hook but that wasn’t the case today. Oh no, today he was at one of the secondary schools, seated with some other members of their community waiting for his turn to speak. The principal was introducing each speaker and Abhi listened patiently to the paramedic, and the police officer speak about their jobs before he heard the man introduce him.

Abhimanyu luckily hadn’t thrown on his fire fighter uniform and was dressed in normal clothes as he made his way to the podium. “Alright–hi kids, I have to be honest..it has been a minute since I had to give a speech about my job.” But that didn’t stop him from expressing how much he loved it and how he made the move from his lifeguard job and how fulfilling this one was. He opened the floor to some questions and that was when he saw a familiar face. The woman he’d met on the cruise. That was fate clearly playing games seeing as he’d never seen her before that cruise and now was actually seeing her again.

He gave her a smile before directing his attention to the kids for their questions. Once Abhi completed his section, he took his seat–but this time his attention was on her–Suhana, she’d introduced herself as. So this was the school she taught at…maybe this time they’d get more of a chance to talk seeing as it was nearing the end of the school day.

She noticed him just a minute or so before it was his turn to walk forward and talk to the students. Suhana was shocked to say the least. The math teacher had just met the man briefly about a week or so ago at that fancy event on the cruise and now here he was talking to the student body at her school. Huh. What a coincidence. During his little talk Suhana thought back to their brief, but amusing conversation and just how focused it was on his exceptional height. She could see the teenage girls in the stands going full on heart eyes for the man and she couldn’t blame them. He was like one of those characters from a CW show, but in real life. 

She wasn’t sure if he realized it was her, but when he was done he looked over at her again and this time they made eye contact. Yeah, he remembered her. Suhana gave a tiny wave that hopefully only he saw and not one of her students. No doubt she would have to hear about it tomorrow if someone caught her saying hi to the hot firefighter who visited. The principal spoke some more to wrap things up, thanking their guests for taking the time to speak to the students before the final bell rang and everyone was excused.

She did love the part of her life that she helped people learn to keep their bodies move and in shape, and how to keep them safe. She had many work outs that did the best of both words. Keeping you in safe and would teach you how to defend yourself. But also would do normal work outs with weights and machines, and other workout classes.  But she was one of her friends was happy to have her as trainer and had a lesson today.  “You ready? come on lets go! “she said acting all crazy then she laughed “Kidding” she winked. She knew how Suhana was doing, what she could and could not doo.  “But you ready to warm up?” she said and moved over to a open space and started to stretch with her since it was how you had to start out any good work out. “So how are you doing. what’s new with you?” she asked. Once they were done she moved over to the fee weights she was going to start off easy “Curls lets go”  Suhana knew what wights she was good with lifting and they work up to the next weight soon. 

Suhana was startled to say the least, wondering if perhaps Kasey had drank too much coffee or something today. She would have jumped into their usual routine with gusto too if the trainer kept it up. Luckily for this teacher though the other woman was joking, allowing Suhana to relax before stretching. Things were still sore from their workout the other day, but it felt good to stretch and hopefully build upon the progress they’d made so far. “I’m alright. Things at school have been a little wild though. I don’t know what it is about October or the phase of the moon that all my classes start getting out of control. She immediately went for the weights that she’d used last time and the time before that, bringing them up to her chest one by one.

Hiten was reading a book behind the counter, nothing too fancy, some paperback they’d gotten from the shelves that seemed to have been their about… well, at least for the last century. It was a book about giraffes in a zoo in Europe. Boring, but at least something to pass the time. They looked up when they heard the bell, offering a smile, one that was laced with the look of those who were dead behind their eyes. They licked the inside of their teeth, watching the very visible vibe of the other radiate through the store. “Hello,” they said in return. “Can I help you with anything?” they asked, putting their book down.

Her insurance mentioned it would take a couple hours, but she had nowhere else to go that didn’t require walking for a while. Plus, this place was well-lit and convenience stores stayed open 24/7 so she figured it was her safest bet. “Oh um… My car broke down a little ways down the road so I’m just going to camp out here until the tow truck comes, if that’s okay with you? I promise I’ll buy something. I’m actually kind of hungry anyway. I’m Suhana, by the way.” She didn’t have to tell them her name, but she was going to be here a while so it seemed like the appropriate thing to do.

“I never get tired of being out here.” A sigh escaped her lips as she set her paddle across the canoe gunwals, her eyes scanning the beautiful landscape that surrounded them. “I’ve been coming here since I was six with my brothers, but it used to end up with me in the lake half the time. I’m glad you agreed to come so I promise we’ll stay dry. Stuck on two boats with me in one week, though…I didn’t know you had it in you.”

Suhana looked out upon the water and let out a content sigh. It was a beautiful sight and one that brought her a great deal of peace after a long week of teaching high schoolers. She absolutely adored her job, but good god sometimes teenagers were just a bit much. “Oh I know right? I’m surprised I haven’t just jumped into the water and swam away yet.” She looked out over the water and the reflection of that picturesque blue sky above and smiled. “No, I’m honestly really glad you invited me. This is really nice.”
