i have a youtube video about the use of jumpscares in horror games playing in the background while I work, and it reminded me of the single worst jumpscare i've ever experienced, which happened while I was playing a little game I like to call... Google Maps. (you play Google Maps by turning on street view, zooming in to somewhere that looks interesting, and clicking on any 360 photo views that people might have uploaded. i have spent many hours of my life playing Google Maps)

Anyway, spin this guy around to see something that legitimately made me jump so hard that I damn near threw my drink across the room

I can't get over this stupid AI picture that I've been seeing in Tumblr ads. Like AI is usually pretty easy to pick out, but how the hell did this make it on to an ad? They have no legs! He has no arms! Why is she lighting his blanket thing on fire!? Did anyone, and I mean anyone, look at this before submitting it as an ad? Don't these things cost a lot of money!?

From the Verdigris House to the Rear Palace: Sex workers’ perspective on The Apothecary Diaries

Spoilers for season 1 of The Apothecary Diaries

There were many reasons I was automatically hooked on The Apothecary Diaries: a capable young woman for a  protagonist. Mysteries that don’t feel predictable or overdone. Crisp, colorful animation. A cast of majority female characters with their own moral complexities and a variety of roles to play. As a sex worker, however, my favorite aspect of The Apothecary Diaries is the nuanced depiction of sex work. From the Verdigris House women to the royal concubines, the series treats the characters engaged in sex work with care, subverting many of the harmful tropes and expectations that other popular media from around the world often fall into. 

The Apothecary Diaries is incredibly popular in Japan and internationally, becoming the most-streamed anime on ABEMA, an Asia-based streaming service, in Winter 2025. In February, the light novel and manga adaptation surpassed 40 million copies printed worldwide. It’s one of a small number of anime in recent years, including Ooku: the Inner Chambers and Raven of the Inner Palace, that prominently feature sex working characters.

Despite the hype and overall positive reception of The Apothecary Diaries, real life attitudes towards sex workers are still shrouded in stigma. The Global Network of Sex Work Projects reports that sex workers still face criminalization on a global scale, leading to an increased risk of experiencing violence, discrimination, decreased access to health services, and other human rights violations. In Japan, sex workers rights’ groups such as SWASH, work tirelessly to improve the lives of sex workers through education, community outreach and events, lectures, and the publications of resources and studies.

Anime Feminist’s Favorite Films of 2024

You can all likely guess what took the top spot, but did you know other good films also came out last year?

How did we choose our recs?

Participating staff members can nominate up to three titles and can also co-sign other nominated films. Rather than categorizing titles as “feminist-friendly” or “problematic,” they are simply listed in alphabetical order with relevant content warnings; doing otherwise ran the risk of folks seeing these staff recommendations as rubber stamps of unilateral “Feminist Approval,” which is something we try our hardest to avoid here.

The titles below are organized alphabetically. Because licensing and distribution processes often takes longer for films than television series, we’ve demarcated a film’s “year” by the date of its English-language release–in other words, the year that we would’ve had access to it. Likewise, because films are harder to access reliably than TV series, note that a title’s lack of inclusion here might not mean we hated it, but that no one on staff was able to view it prior to publishing. We’ll work on ironing out any issues going forward and possibly looking back at films of previous years, so now more than ever we welcome your feedback.
