This might get me some hate but I feel like it needs to be said so people can maybe stop saying this.
PEOPLE WHO SAY THAT PROM QUEEN MISSES THE POINT OF FEAR STREET CLEARLY DON‘T KNOW A LOT ABOUT THIS SERIES
That’s not a bad thing. You aren’t required to be an expert on a series to enjoy or have opinions on it, but it does mean that something those generalizations are wrong.
Prom Queen hits the exact tone that basically all the 158 books in the series have, and it really does feel like a Fear Street book come to life. It definitely has a lot of the worse parts of Fear Street on full display (compared to how most of the books are way better), but it fits right in tonally.
Also, people who go on about how Prom Queen misses the point of Fear Street are definitely ignoring (or don’t know) how the movie trilogy took a story about how judging people/making assumptions based on their family is bad and turned into a story about an evil family full of only evil people who did evil things.
But sure, Prom Queen misses the point.

So I’ve been thinking about this for some time, but I want to write a fanfic that is basically one of the Fear Street books (technically several of them) in the universe of the movies. It would keep the same characters and general plot of the books but I will tie the story into the movie’s lore (and maybe have a couple of cameos). I know that most fans don’t know that much about the books, but the recent release of Prom Queen has got me thinking that there might be an audience for this.

THIS, THIS, THIS.
I don't think that Prom Queen was a perfect movie, or that it doesn't deserve a lot of the criticism it has received. However calling something not Fear Street because it is dissimilar to the last 3 entries (but very similar to the other 158 entries) is ridiculous. You are allow to prefer the movies to the books, and to not know a lot about the books, but acting like the books don't exist and that they don't have a place in the series that they literally created is honestly stupid.
TLDR, THIS MOVIE ISN'T PERFECT, BUT IT ABSOLUTELY IS A FEAR STREET MOVIE.
Tumblr media
I’m sorry but the amount of people saying that the new Fear Street movie is nothing like Fear Street is making me laugh because it’s more like Fear Street than the Fear Street trilogy. Prom Queen is the only one actually adapted from a book while the Trilogy movies are only inspired by some of the Fear Street novels.
I’m not saying that the new Fear Street movie was perfect, it obviously needed more work done on it but a lot of you are clearly biased towards those trilogy movies. The amount of people saying that Prom Queen should have been called something else other than Fear Street because it wasn’t related to the characters in the trilogy films is wild because Prom Queen is a Fear Street movie.
And I’m not the biggest fan of how Prom Queen turned out. I think that the acting could’ve been better, they could’ve done a way better job of making this movie look like the time period that it’s supposed to be set in and they also could’ve done a better job of translating a book released in 1992 to a more modern audience. But the complaints that this movie isn’t a Fear Street movie because it isn’t related to/isn’t anything like the trilogy movies is silly to me.

Fear Street Prom Queen Non-Spoiler Opinions
I will go out and say from an objective quality standpoint, this movie is worse than the trilogy. It felt disjointed at times and the dialogue wasn’t up to snuff.
That being said this movie is way more tonally similar to the books. People keep saying the this is just a typically slasher movie with the Fear Street name slapped on it, but it’s actually more accurate to say that about the movie trilogy.
THE MOVIE TRILOGY WAS NOTHING LIKE THE BOOKS, AND THIS MOVIE IS CLEARLY TRYING HARDER TO BE A GENUINE ADAPTATION THEN THEY WERE.
And for that I honestly can say I respect this movie, even if I don’t think it’s as good as it could have been.
(Also the book was just better. Like it had its problems but it was a much better structured story. Plus, a 30 year old book was way more queer and more respecting of its female characters than this movie. Shame.)

I’M SO FUCKING READY. I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MOVIE SINCE JANUARY 2024. I WILL BE FULLY SEATED ON MAY 23.
(Also, hello prom dress from the original book cover. Nice to see that even if the story isn’t sticking to the book, the costume department seems to care about the source material. It’s at 0:03 if anyone cares.)

I know that neither of them are really canon to Epic or the Odyssey, however I choose to believe that Achaemenides and Macareus exist in Epic. Just cause I think it’s funny.
Odysseus: (crying to Penelope over losing all 600 of his men)
2 of his men that are 100% still alive: Y’all hear something

And are absolutely hated by fans of the original story despite the limited information.
Listen, as someone who is a big fan of both of these series and the original stories, I have a lot of mixed feelings about these movies. I don’t think they are going to be bad movies (we don’t really know enough to say), but I’d just wish they tried harder to make them like the original version. I don’t care about this new group of friends or whatever prom queens they’re made up for these movies, I want to see the characters I grew to love from the original.
Also, don’t fucking get on me about how adaptations are allowed to change things. I KNOW THAT. And in the end it’s not my decision. But if Harry Potter, Marvel, and other big franchises are allowed to get annoyed about missing that one character in the adaptation, then I’m allowed to get annoyed about missing the ENTIRE GODDAMN CAST.

Goosebumps the Vanishing fucking rules.
I loved it way more than the first season. As someone who thinks Slappy is overrated and loves when Goosebumps goes sci fi, I am definitely biased to the second season. My knowledge of the franchise also helped since the moment I saw “Welcome to Camp Nightmare” I knew it was going to be aliens. As a fan of the OG book series, I still wished there were more references, but it’s definitely better than the Fear Street movies in that regard (oops who said that). Can’t wait for the third season, definitely glad they stuck with being an anthology like the OG books series.

They totally should. The only reason I say next fall is because the publishing company for the book series said next fall. I’d love for them to be lying though.

Ok, I did know two weeks ago that Prom Queen was coming out next year but I guess it’s nice to get info directly from Netflix. I should know better than to get my hopes up, but so far this movie is really giving me proper Fear Street books vibes. I’ll decide if I going to be fully excited when it’s confirmed that characters from the book are going to be in it. I have a feeling it will be awhile until then.

New Fear Street News
We’re got our hand on an official source (aka the description of the reprint of the Prom Queen book) that says Fear Street Prom Queen is coming out Fall of 2025. I’m annoyed that it’s going to take so long for it to come out, but I guess that will give the movie time to be more polished.
Also here’s the description if you’re curious.
Tumblr media
Funny that they make a completely new description but still have the typo from the original one. Fear Street has never had the best editors.

Something I think is very cool about Fear Street Seniors is that it is an ensemble cast with more female characters than male characters. Significantly so too. The gender split is 9 boys to 15 girls.
And it wasn’t just a numbers thing. The female characters were the ones leading the narrative, and the male characters were basically there to be love interests. Funny how that works.
Fear Street as a series is majority female lead, but it’s cool to see an ensemble cast (that is not a romance story) with more girls than boys.
