Ben was only half listening, something that was unusual for him to be quite honest. Or at least it was unusual for him since Master Cal was the one trying to show him something. He’d felt rather scattered lately. His brain a mush of thoughts that he wasn’t sure were all his own. It scared him, but the sound of his voice in the background was enough to at least ease the tension in his shoulders. It was only when the other directed a question at him that he fully came back, blinking as his pale cheeks flushed crimson. He looked down at what Cal was working on. Oh. The droid. He recognized the eye for another droid he was holding and put two and two together quickly before nodding.

“I guess so.” He said quietly, “Do you think that they feel it?” He asked then, almost thoughtful, “The pain, I mean…”

↬   ⦑ cal paused what he was doing to regard the younger man’s question. he’d had such discussions with bd-1. from what he understood, the droids could feel the pain, similar to how organic beings did. unfortunately, that also meant they fall apart just the same. parts fail, just like organs did, which was the unfortunate fate of the droid that donated the eyepiece. ⦒

       ❛ they do. they’ve got wires that connect to and tell their hard drive when they’re injured, which sends similar signals that our nervous system does with our brains. its made it easier to diagnose problems if they can tell us where it hurts. certain manufacturers also believed that it made it easier to serve with and bond with them on battlefields, since a lot of droids carry important intel and need to be protected. its believed that’s why they have their own personalities. ❜

↬   ❛ the thing about droids--especially more compact ones like this little guy--is that a lot of parts are interchangeable. its something that started during the clone wars, when we were losing droids faster than they could be made. hell, bd’s antennae is actually from an old gonk doid. ❜

       ⦑ it wasn’t often cal got to flex his mechanical knowledge with luke’s students, but when he did, he was determined to make sure they walked away with something they could use, and use correctly. right now, he and master skywalker’s nephew were working on a newer model that was already needing a lens within its eye replaced. ⦒

        ❛ in the case of this bb unit, we can use the eye of a retired r2 unit as a temporary fix until master skywalker makes a supplies run. the wires pretty much connect the same. make sense?. ❜

                 it  has  been  a  long  time  since  the  child  last  saw  another  jedi .  he  gazes  up  at  the  stranger  with                  big  eyes  SPARKLING  in  wonder .  it ’ s  times  like  this  that  he  wishes  he  could  really  SPEAK  –                  but  if  this  man  is  a  jedi ,  they  should  be  able  to  communicate  in  another  form .

      ⦑ to say cal was surprised to see a youngling from the temple decades after the purge was...well, it was an understatement. if it had been anyone else, cal definitely wouldn’t have recognized them, but the little green bean was very hard to miss. he didn’t have much interaction with him beyond the class overlap when he was in training, but grogu had always stuck out as being only the third of his species cal had ever seen--the first two being yoda and yaddle. practically all of the younger padawans at the temple knew of him. his discovery was kind of a big deal, after all.

      cal knelt down to get a better look at him. how the hell did he not age? he was still a little toddler, as small as the last time the redhead had seen him, which was long before the purge even happened. then again, yoda had been centuries old and still kicking before the purge, so maybe their species just lived a long time. yeah, that would make a lot of sense actually.

       cal felt tiny feet skitter up his back, the little head of his bd-1 unit poking his head over his shoulder. the little guy let out a few curious chirps before hopping down to get a closer look at the toddler. the droid trotted up to him, cocking its mechanical head like a confused puppy. ⦒

        ❛ we were at the temple together, little guy. don’t you remember? ❜
