Zaneri Kim (김자네리), was born and raised in The Upper East Side, Manhattan, NYC. She lived there until the age of 14 and started training at the age of 15 during 2012 to become an idol. She then debuted on May 26, 2015 as the only female member of the co-ed group, Seventeen.

Growing up 𝜗𝜚

Since she grew up in such a wealthy family, she got the opportunity to indulge in many different activities. She took art classes, acting lessons, went to exquisite parties, and enjoyed travelling. However, her favorite thing to do, and what she stuck with, was anything music-related. She took dance classes for hip hop, contemporary, jazz, breakdancing, ballet, and pop. She didn’t take many vocal lessons until her parents convinced her that her beautiful voice needed to be nurtured. She also learned to play several instruments like the piano, guitar, drums, and the violin.

To this day, she still plays all of them quite well, especially the guitar and piano, which she took special interest in. She has two guitars, an electric guitar she bought for herself, and the other is an acoustic guitar, which was a gift from her late grandfather.

When she moved to Seoul at the age of 14, she was enrolled in a private school and stayed with her grandparents. It was Zaneri’s idea to move, as she wanted to know more about her Korean side. Her parents, however, couldn’t just pack up their lives and leave. So they made her stay with her maternal grandparents. Her grandparents happily welcomed their granddaughter, whom they rarely saw, into their home.

She was scouted after an agent saw her dancing and singing during a school competition, which she ended up winning. Her grandparents agreed to let her begin training, but she still needed her parents’ permission. She’s an only child, which made it hard to convince her parents that becoming an idol was the right path. It’s not that they were against the idea of idols or anything, but they knew how competitive the industry is, and they knew their daughter wasn’t guaranteed to debut. However, after much consideration and research, they agreed.

ఌ︎. Zaneri's Temporary Hiatus (specifically 2018-2019)

Disclaimer: Sort of angsty, mention of depression and familial loss. Nothing too detailed though, but proceed with caution nonetheless.

Being the only female member of a group where she's the only female amongst 13 other male members garnered a lot of unnecessary hate and criticism from some viewers. Zaneri was often ignored at concerts, fan signs, and even sent threatening messages. Zaneri, at the time, was very fragile, and her anxiety was through the roof. Although the members, especially S.Coups, tried to hide these awful things from her, when her curiosity got the best of her, their efforts were simply in vain.

She tried to keep her head up high, but it was difficult. The members did everything they could to help her, but deep down, she felt like she was only creating more problems for them to deal with. Her grandfather had also passed away towards the end of 2017, and that was truly her last straw. She fell into extreme depressive episodes, which not only affected her but also affected the group. The boys, however, never blamed her and never would. They reassured her, consoled her, and constantly defended her.

Zaneri, however, felt terrible for causing so many problems. Without the knowledge of her members, she had a one-on-one meeting with their manager and the CEO to express her grievances. She asked the CEO if she could take an indefinite hiatus, which he agreed to. He expressed that the company is working hard to fix the issue. An official statement was later released confirming Zaneri’s indefinite hiatus. It had garnered mixed reactions and even more questions. She decided to leave Seoul and head back to New York at the beginning of 2018.

Her parents kept a careful eye on her and she started therapy soon after. She still kept in touch with the rest of Seventeen, talking to them every other day. She even saw the messages fans left under seventeen’s videos and on twitter pages about her which were mostly positive. It felt nice knowing that there were people who appreciated her.

She ended up getting better every day, and towards the end of 2019, she was ready to move back to the spotlight as she was in a much better place. Her parents were against it at first, but with some convincing from Zaneri, her maternal grandmother, the members, and even the company, her parents ended up agreeing.

She travelled back to SK incognito and immediately went to the dorm to visit the members. The company also decided how she was going to make her comeback during a meeting the following day. That’s when her manager proposed the idea of her dropping a single without any notice to the fans. Everyone agreed, and on January 1st, 2020, her single ‘Vixen’ was all over.

With the way Zaneri came back after two years away, it was clear--she wasn't just returning; she was reintroducing herself. Her makeup had matured, trading the playful charm of her earlier days for a more refined, elegant edge. Her once shoulder-length hair now fell in sleek, healthy strands all the way down to her hips, a quiet symbol of time passed and lessons learned.

Her figure had changed too--not drastically, but noticeably. She carried herself with a quiet confidence; her waist curved gently into her hips, creating an effortless hourglass silhouette, her legs long and strong. Her nails were now always polished with some sort of design or simply manicured, compared to the natural look from before.

It wasn't that anything was ever wrong with the old Zaneri--this transformation wasn't born out of criticism. It was something she did for herself. A shift. A soft evolution. Because under the gloss and glow, she was still Zaneri Kim. Just...more her.

She’s still kind, funny, caring, calm, positive (for the most part), ambitious, smart, and just simply Zaneri. The girl her members and fans loved, just with a bit more self-assured aura. Therapy helped her a lot with her self-confidence and self-control. She probably would’ve just stayed in New York, in the shadows, because life wasn't so bad there.

Nevertheless, she couldn't stay holed up in their luxury apartment; she knew she belonged on a big stage in front of millions of people. Her members convincing her to come back and always checking in on her, and her true fans continuously flooding the comments on Seventeen’s videos asking for her, really brought tears to her eyes. So she decided she definitely needed to go back.

Of course, her haters resurfaced and made comments with the desperate attempt of trying to once again bully her out of doing what she loves. These comments didn’t affect her like they did back then. Back then, she’d cry for hours and shut off her phone, but now? She’d roll her eyes at those irrelevant comments that underestimated her, that shamed her. She knows her skills are top-notch and she can’t wait to continue proving them wrong.

Her commitment, dedication, and determination for this journey are the keys to her success now. Her passion for music is palpable, and she now knows that to continue her dream with her members and fans, she’ll need to continue growing and fighting for what she loves. She plans to create even more memories with her members, ones she may have missed out on, and also continue to support and grow with them. She hopes to inspire fans through their music and make a global impact.

ʚଓ Woozi is one of the only members who can truly understand and match Zaneri’s desire for perfection. He helps her with her lyrics, teaches her how to use the equipment and calms her down when she’s being too hard on herself in the studio.

ʚଓ They often stay up composing with each other. Think like 2-am sessions filled with ad-libs, jokes, laughs and co writing songs. They drive each other to do better artistically and have a good understanding of the other’s artistry.

ʚଓ She calls him out when he’s being too hard on himself and makes sure he’s getting enough rest and food. She brings him lunch and provides quiet support when he’s working. She gives him constructive feedback when he asks for it and praises his amazing works unrelentingly.

ʚଓ At first their relationship was sort of shaky, because it was new and something that hadn’t really been done before. The atmosphere between them was awkward and slightly tense but as time passed by especially with the news that she’d be debuting with Svt, they started opening up to each other more.

ʚଓ Now they can enjoy each other’s silence or crack some jokes while having a drink without it being awkward. Straight comfort and vibes.

DK (Dokyeom)

𓂃۶ৎ Literal besties, think bright sunshine meets bright full moon and uncontrollable love for each other.

ʚଓ To describe their relationship, I would literally say Dk is Zaneri’s person and vice versa. They’re always laughing, always teasing and have such chaotic positive energy.

ʚଓ They’re each other’s hype squad. She could listen to DK sing for the rest of her life and never get tired of his voice. When they’re at Caratland, she literally screams like she’s one of the fan girls in the stands when she hears Dk pop off.

ʚଓ On the other hand, Dk literally starts a hype chant for her during concerts and cheers her on super loudly, like he’s trying to beat the fans.

ʚଓ When she’s sad, he immediately notices and drags her to get ice cream or join a ridiculous karaoke session.

ʚଓ She loves Dk to bits and is his number 1 protector and supporter. Although they tease each other endlessly, anyone could see that they have a close wholesome bond.

ʚଓ Dk loves her like a sister and promises to keep cherishing her and protecting her light. She thinks DK’s being is so precious and she just loves his energy, like introvert who?

ʚଓ The fans love them and there are so many videos of them online together with titles like “Dk and Neri being chaotic for 15 minutes straight.” And “Zaneri and Dk being the most hilarious duo on the planet for 20 minutes straight”

Joshua

𓂃۶ৎ Calm admiration, each other’s anchors, elegant twins who are secretly(openly) chaotic lol and definitely deep convo 3am sessions.

ʚଓ They’re very similar in a way. Both calm (for the most part), sensitive to their emotions and feel deeply but often doesn’t show it well.

ʚଓ Joshua was actually the first person Zaneri felt brave enough to approach and that’s mostly because she needed directions and he seemed the most approachable.

ʚଓ He’s like her support system and she’s like his. Raw emotions, endless inside jokes, deep convos about the future, about their dreams and just weird random questions lol.

ʚଓ They like speaking English when they’re with each other so they don’t forget.

ʚଓ Zaneri likes when he gifts her jewelry or perfume he made. They have such a similar aura and they enjoy each other’s chill company.

ʚଓ When she’s stressed or overwhelmed or vice versa, they sit together and either talk about it or just enjoy each other’s company providing a reassuring safe space for the other.

ʚଓ Honestly if it wasn’t for Joshua and Jeonghan, Zaneri would’ve probably quit just before her debut and that would’ve sucked big time. It’s not like he was the only one she was close to, but since they talked to each other so much about things they were feeling deep inside, she just felt comfortable telling him.

ʚଓ He understood and reassured her that it’s fine to feel that way and that she should make a decision based on why she started this journey in the first place but she should also make sure she’s ready for this.

ʚଓ Their humor? On the same level. Dry, witty, and unpredictable sometimes.

Seungkwan

𓂃۶ৎ Platonic siblings, variety royalties and don’t tell anyone, but Zaneri’s bias is definitely Seungkwan. They find comfort in each other and Zaneri proves to be such an anchor for him when he’s overwhelmed.

ʚଓ During Pre-debut, he was sort of intimidating. Not the scary type but the type that was so driven and fought so hard for his debut. Zaneri admired his drive and ended up talking to him which led to them soon becoming friends.

ʚଓ They fight like siblings but care and love like platonic soulmates. They bicker about everything but at the end of the day, she’ll provide a shoulder for him to lean on.

ʚଓ She’s fiercely protective of the maknae line and will defend them till her last breath. She takes care of Seungkwan, making sure he’s eating right, resting properly and taking it easy. Reminding him that he’s a human too and he should relax sometimes.

ʚଓ He has cried to her before, on multiple occasions when they’re out drinking or simply just at home. Especially when the pressure of being an idol seems too much and she holds him close and reassures him.

ʚଓ Apart from Dk, he’s also in her little hype group. Jumps with her during concerts, takes selfies with her, gets the crowd hype when she’s performing.

Jeonghan

𓂃۶ৎ So much love, respect, trust, and affection goes into their relationship. They tease the life out of each other but have such a deep emotional connection. Don’t even think of putting these two on a team together during a game.

ʚଓ Zaneri has always had a crush on him. From the moment she joined Pledis, it was 'crush at first sight' lol. However, she didn’t just fall for his pretty looks but for his genuine personality.

ʚଓ His caring nature and undeniable beauty that comes from the way he loves and protects others, especially her and the members. He’ll tease the hell out of her but also be the one to fix her mic pack mid show or quietly drape a jacket over her shoulders.

ʚଓ Trainee days were strenuous and stressful. Closer and closer to the debut just felt like more and more pressure. Even though she loved the spotlight, her fear of failure was paralysing. ʚଓ During their predebut days, Hoshi witnessed Zaneri’s dance skills and immediately wrote her off as a rival (not in a bad way though!) She was good—great even and he admired how she fought for her debut, all of this unbeknownst to her. She didn’t expect it when he complimented her skills because he was kinda scary lol.

ʚଓ He wasn’t mean or anything though, very much the opposite. He was like a competitive older brother who treated her well. She loved that he didn’t look down on her and actually deemed her skills worthy enough to become a rival and they actually became best friends during their debut days.

ʚଓ Zaneri keeps him on his toes and he lives for it. They’ll argue about choreography until 3am then pull off the sickest performance together during the day.

ʚଓ They’ve made choreographies together, especially for their concert intros, dance breaks and obviously their duo moments as their style matches really well with each other. Like the perfect blend of each other. His precision and power meets her rhythmic flair and power.

ʚଓ Minghao and Zaneri rarely interacted during their predebut days until it was revealed that she’d be in the final lineup and with that they were forced to interact. At first it was awkward especially when other members weren’t around and it was just them. Overtime and a few hours of google translate, they started to get a bit more comfortable with each other.

ʚଓ Now? They both share their love for fashion and taking pictures to later post on their social media platforms. Minghao loves making her meditate with him and have tea in comfortable silence without the chaos that everyone else would bring. They paint each other’s nails too and talk about whatever it is that they wanna discuss. They love their members but it’s nice to have some peace and quiet.

ʚଓ He teaches her Chinese (along with jun) and she teaches him English. Although, their patience runs out eventually, and there starts the teasing and playful arguments.

ʚଓ Like Minghao, Zaneri didn’t really interact with Jun until after they knew this was the final lineup. After that Zaneri began warming up to Jun and vice versa especially since Minghao and Jun are so close, naturally Zaneri slowly started interacting with Jun. There started the prank-filled, fun sibling relationship they now have.

ʚଓ Jun loves her like a younger sister and takes good care of her while obviously making sure he teases her daily. He quietly protects her, and he’s really good at reassurance.

ʚଓ Dino actually naturally gravitated towards Zaneri during trainee days. He admired her skills, and they’d often have dance-offs during training in front of the other trainees just for fun.

ʚଓ After their first meeting, Dino asked if they could become friends, and she happily accepted. From that day, he was attached to her by the hip. He was basically her baby, to be honest.

ʚଓ She spoils him rotten. Buying him clothes, food, and luxury items, because she believes he works extremely hard and deserves nice things. That’s just an excuse to buy him stuff though lol.

ʚଓ She never misses out on an opportunity to tease him but protects him fiercely, clocks anybody immediately if she feels like they’re being too hard on him. Not just Dino but she does the same for all the members.

Parents occupation: Her mother is the ceo of a fashion brand and her father is a corporate lawyer.

Education: She graduated with a STEM degree, specifically in biology.

When high school came along, she was too busy with her training and school to focus on a relationship. 𓂃۶ৎ She loves fashion. Like really loves fashion. If she wasn't an idol she'd probably be in fashion school (or so she thinks). She loves going to thrift stores and buying vintage items. 𓂃۶ৎ Although Zaneri wants to believe that she would go to fashion school if she wasn’t an idol, she’s just too much of a science girly. She loves experimenting and solving problems. She’d definitely be the best (safely) dressed in the lab. Like why not both?

𓂃۶ৎ Her love for iced vanilla bean lattes started after she went out with her friend one day after her debate club meeting in high school. Her friend brought her to a new cafe and recommended the iced vanilla bean latte. Zaneri immediately fell in love and has been obsessed with it ever since.

𓂃۶ৎ She was actually supposed to be one of the main vocalists in the vocal unit but because the vocal unit already had so many members, she requested to be placed in the hip hop unit instead. It wasn’t a crazy move since she was already an amazing rapper.

𓂃۶ৎ Zaneri loves surprises, but since she’s so clumsy, people tend not to do it as often. For example, on her 15th birthday, her grandparents surprised her with a new laptop, and as she was walking away with it, she tripped on her shoelace and it broke in two. She cried for the whole week every time she remembered what happened. Now she’s not as clumsy and tries to be more careful. (She’s still a bit clumsy though.)

𓂃۶ৎ Her comfort foods are shrimp fettuccine pasta and kimchi fried rice. If she’s having a bad day, she’ll make her grandma’s recipe for one or the other and eat while watching her comfort show. For it to be comfort food, it has to specifically be her grandma’s recipe, and she’ll know if it’s not.

𓂃۶ৎ She loves pineapple pizza. Like that’s her favourite fast food and she will die on that hill.
