Jesskas Soulmate AU

Approximately ten minutes after Lukas spawned, a pinprick of pain on his elbow revealed a small scar. Nothing had preceded it, pain had just shot through his elbow for no reason at all.

When he arrived at a village and asked someone about it, they told him about a phenomenon called "spawn-mates": people who spawn into the world at the exact same time, as if the universe mixed up lines of code. These people share an inexplicable connection, one so deep that if one is hurt, that pain is shared with the other.

When Lukas heard that and felt another pinprick of pain streak across his knee, he couldn't help but think that his spawn-mate was way too accident-prone for his liking.

However, by the time he met Aiden, Maya, and Gill, he barely even thought about his spawn-mate. The flashes of pain faded into the background; sometimes he would wash his hands and be surprised by another scar he hadn't even felt. People would ask him if he planned on joining the hordes of people who went off searching for their spawn-mates, but he always shrugged and waved it off. He would meet them when he met them, if they ever met at all.

The first time he ever gave his spawn-mate a scar, he was accidentally cut on the arm while sparring with Aiden. It was small, but Lukas huffed a laugh when he thought of his spawn-mate freaking out over it. He wondered if, somewhere out there, they were looking at their arm in disbelief and thinking, "about damn time."

Somewhere in the world, his spawn-mate felt the cut scar over and indeed freaked out, not even aware he'd had a spawn-mate in the first place.

I would really like to hear your thoughts on the Astarion and Karlach pairing! Why them?

Since Astarion's initial goal when seducing tav/durge is to use them to get rid of Cazador, it naturally follows that his motivations for pursuing a companion would be the same. Karlach is a beast of a woman who is largely driven by revenge and emotion; she is strong, persevering, as well as significantly starved for intimacy: she sounds like an extremely easy target for Astarion's purposes, and that wouldn't have been lost on him. Even as a friend, Karlach never hesitates to express wilfulness to defend and free Astarion from Cazador's clutches, so I'm sure that that sentiment would have been doubled if she cared for him romantically.

...And I think she would have, easily. As much as Astarion tries to be all poised and put-together, we all know that he has an awkward charm to him that I have no doubt Karlach enjoys and would have easily fallen for. On the flipside of that, Karlach reveals herself throughout the course of the game to be a really emotionally mature character - her humor and upbeat-nature is, in a way, as calculated as Astarion's performative poise; she's a grown woman who knows that she is going to die, and she only ever dances around the topic in favor of not spoiling the time she has left - never because of denial.

Because of that, I think Karlach would have been able to relate to Astarion and to genuinely share in his pain and anger towards his circumstances, but I also believe she would have had no problem expressing to him her true feelings when their goals differed - and get him to see the truth behind his own actions. I don't think there's a character I can best envision talking him out of Ascension better than Karlach. For reasons like that, as well as many others, I can easily see Astarion falling head over heels himself.

I don't think I even need to mention the convenient way their endings overlap with their needs; to live, Karlach needs to be in Avernus. Avernus has no sun and an endless supply of foes to slay and feed off of. Both these characters hunger for violence as much as they long for genuine company and love. It all just makes sense.
