We came here (Empress Road Market / Food Centre) for our April Sketchwalk.

A quaint little heartland neighborhood, much like Ghim Moh, but quieter. Love that it has many interesting vantage points, juxtaposition of old (pink and white) HDB blocks with newer styled condominiums, surrounded by luscious green foliage. And good food! The little hawker centre serves up pretty awesome local fare - the Bak Chor Mee, Laksa, Mee Rebus, Wanton Mee, western food stall, etc… all damn shiok. 😋 I wouldn’t mind living in this ‘hood, to be honest.

This colorful little corner with a provision shop and a home-fix products shop caught the interest of several of us. 😉

It was such a hot morning we just about all melted… But while the intense heat is a sketcher’s nightmare, it’s usually also mean really great light and strong shadows - a sketcher’s delight. 😅

Haven’t been to Marine Parade since the MRT was still being built! 🫣 We used to come here so often when we lived at Meyer Road, and even after we had moved west, we were back here at least weekly for the kids’ piano lessons. So much fond memories for our family from this place.

A sketch done during one of the I Jio You sketchwalks a couple months back that I’d forgotten to share.

Came late for the sketchwalk and found Joel and Sabrina sitting at a Kopitiam (our local coffeshop in the SG heartland), so I plopped myself down and joined them for drinks and a quick sketch.

This bunch of “uncles” caught my attention… they looked like buddies (possibly fellow cab drivers) meeting here for a meal, chatting heartily. So important to have good friends at this age to do life together. 🥹🍺🍺

My sketch from last Wed’s hangout with our visiting Korean and Taiwanese sketcher pals, who chose to spend a few days in SG on their way home after the very memorable Asia Link Sketchwalk: Penang 2024 event that took place over the previous weekend.

Came late due to my car breaking down, and then went and got our friends drinks and some local snacks. So by the time I settled down to sketch, it was only 30 min to throw-down time. This little side alley along Bussorah St caught my attention and was calling out to me (I have a thing for tight back alleys around SG or anywhere).

Did a quick line work sketch and only just found time today to add wash to it.

What a fun morning that ended with a super yummy lunch of Ayam Penyet and cakes. 😋 Glad our visiting friends had fun. 🫰🏼🥰

Spent a morning with my beloved friends P’Pramote, P’Asnee, and Sutien from USk Thailand sketching at the rustically gorgeous Chew Jetty.

The Nasi Lemak Udang and Char Kway Tiao were super sedap.

My piece from yesterday’s Sketchwalk at Geylang Serai, a popular Malay / Muslim enclave in the mid-eastern part of Singapore.

Ramadan is about over and Hari Raya (translated: Big Day; celebrating the end of Ramadan) is around the corner, and this part of town is usually teeming with atmosphere and festivities this time of the year.

While most of our sketchers were sketching up Malay-inspired architecture across the street, Ken and I decided to capture some favorite Malay eats – a big part of the Hari Raya festivities, and certainly Singapore Malay Culture.

This stall (operating since 1985) is a very popular Malay dessert place selling Putu Piring, a Kueh (steamed rice cake) with brown palm sugar (Gula Melaka) fillings, sprinkled with freshly grated coconut, usually served on a tiny piece of banana leaf. It reminds me a lot of the Chinese Kueh Tu-Tu.

One bite into the steamy, soft and slightly powdery and bland exterior, and you will be greeted with an explosion of nuanced, textured sweetness, and that combination is just heavenly… and I don’t even have a sweet tooth. 😂

The other sweet delights on the table I bought from the neighboring stalls; the Putu Piring was the star.

An urban sketcher at heart, I could not help but also capture the shopfront, with dedicated kak-kaks (older sisters) and makciks (older ladies / moms) hard at work churning out Kueh after Kueh.

From this morning’s I Jio You Sketchwalk @ Bussorah / Arab Street. Great turnout despite the scorching weather. The place was abuzz with tourists taking in all the pre-Hari Raya festivities.

Haven’t sketched for mere weeks and I could already feel the rustiness in my chops… just wasn’t feeling it. 😬 Well at least the company was wonderful – sketch buddies like Shirley, Mdm Tia, Alvin, Anne, etc. 🥰

Forgot to post my quick 20-min sketch from Jan 2024’s Sketchwalk at Holland Village - a hipsteresque township at the central southwestern part of Singapore.

Was a fun outing with great turnout for our first Sketchwalk of the year. A few of us chatted as we sketched and sipped coffee under the comfy shade of the Food Centre.

A brand new, impressive looking mall has sprung up behind the Holland V Food Centre, on the plot that used to be the big open air parking lot. Lovely place and it made the already hipster vibe of Holland V even more hipster… with lots of cafes and restaurants. Worth a visit, if you ever visit Singapore. ☺️
