Another (smaller) group of us went a little further west from UTown, and showed up at Clementi Central join in and capture the festivities happening there this weekend. Ben, Huiling and James even went on the tour.

The two best modes of transportation in one illustration: bicycles and ferries. (well, if there was also somehow a train it would’ve been perfect) We were headed to a flea market, but this short ferry ride is obviously an everyday commute, too. There is no perfect keyboard except the one made by Apple. I have been looking for something that work like Apple keyboard but there is none. Apple makes the best keyboard though there is one tiny flaw. It can only be connected to one device at one time, which is the Mac desktop I am using. To type on other devices like my iPhone and my iPad, I have to connect them to another keyboard. It is crazy to have so many keyboards on the desk and hard to imagine bringing out a keyboard to use on one device and then putting it away when not in use. To save space I have to use a keyboard that allows me to connect to multiple devices and switching from one to another by a touch of a key. Yes I found it but typing on a non Apple keyboard is crazy. The problems are the keys are either made too small or made to far away or things like that. Most keyboards not made by Apple are not ergonomic for the fingers or the wrists. I wonder why. Anyway here’s a sketch I did at a cafe called Brunches. We wanted to explore some cafes that we have not gone before. And I googled for one that is located along Rangoon Road, somewhere near Jalan Besar and Little India. I was curious when I saw internet images of the cafe posted by her customers. And it is as described; decorated with vintage toys and collections with wooden beams spanning across the ceiling making it look “old” and yet flavourful. It was simply just fun to sit and admire all the vintage classic collections on the shelves, just that the customers were not that interested in those. Anyway it was just fun to be out and about after all that lockdown and social distancing that have been going on for so long.

97-2922 - A beautiful moment

Here is my last sketch done with with #UskManila at the Metropolitan Theatre, for the vaudeville “Samot-Saring Bida: Ang Bodabil ng Pag-asa” dress rehearsal. I did this one rather quickly standing at the back when the performers were in full costume, were finishing off their rehearsal and the when the director was giving everyone a pep talk…hence the title. My piece from yesterday’s Sketchwalk at Geylang Serai, a popular Malay / Muslim enclave in the mid-eastern part of Singapore.

Ramadan is about over and Hari Raya (translated: Big Day; celebrating the end of Ramadan) is around the corner, and this part of town is usually teeming with atmosphere and festivities this time of the year.

While most of our sketchers were sketching up Malay-inspired architecture across the street, Ken and I decided to capture some favorite Malay eats – a big part of the Hari Raya festivities, and certainly Singapore Malay Culture.

This stall (operating since 1985) is a very popular Malay dessert place selling Putu Piring, a Kueh (steamed rice cake) with brown palm sugar (Gula Melaka) fillings, sprinkled with freshly grated coconut, usually served on a tiny piece of banana leaf. It reminds me a lot of the Chinese Kueh Tu-Tu.

One bite into the steamy, soft and slightly powdery and bland exterior, and you will be greeted with an explosion of nuanced, textured sweetness, and that combination is just heavenly… and I don’t even have a sweet tooth. 😂

The other sweet delights on the table I bought from the neighboring stalls; the Putu Piring was the star.

An urban sketcher at heart, I could not help but also capture the shopfront, with dedicated kak-kaks (older sisters) and makciks (older ladies / moms) hard at work churning out Kueh after Kueh.
