Starships are Meant to Fly
1K posts
(The main blog for this-ag-doll-is-a-butch; while that blog stays PG-13, *this* blog is adults only!) 🌌🌌Enby lesbian, they/them. Born in the 1980s. Voltron & Star Trek are my main fandoms, and Sheith is my OTP. I love them with every fiber of my being.🌌 🌌OTW/AO3 supporter. Fiction ≠ Reality, YKINMKATO, Ship & Let Ship, and Don't Like Don't Read are necessary ground rules which allow fandom to be a place of fun and creativity, not a war zone.🌌 🌌Context for my header image: the character depicted is Takashi Shirogane, a canonically gay man who refuses to die in spite of the universe clearly wanting him to. I draw a tremendous amount of strength and inspiration from him.🌌🌌

Unfortunately, I cannot tell if you're being serious or not***, but I stand by what I said either way ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I love the fandom history aspect of Star Trek <3
*** autism strikes again ToT
every few months some annoying motherfucker makes a post asking why it's called 'spirk' instead of 'spork' or 'kock' and the short, easy answer is: spirk is already the silly ship name, the og ship name is 'k/s' and the og og ship name is 'the premise', because spirk is a ship so old that it was around before ship names were invented. now never come into my house again.

Unironically: it feels disrespectful to ~~the Foremothers (and other Elders)~~ when I call it "Spirk" in my head**. I'm not gonna joke about "uses Old Person Voice" because compared to them, even we Millennials are still young'ns.
15 + (???!!?) years ago now, K/S Trek fandom on LJ (LiveJournal) was functionally my very first time as a true member of an "adult" shipping fandom, and many of those women had (and HAVE, some of them are here on this hellsite right along with the rest of us) such amazing stories to tell.
I'm sick rn so I don't have the energy to make a huge rambling post like I want to, but they were fighting battles in the 1960s, 70s, 80s, 90s that my past self (back in 2010) could have never imagined would once again become relevant.
(People accusing them of criminality and immorality for what they shipped and for writing gay fanfic at all, never mind the NSFW. Very real and FOUNDED fears of losing jobs and custody of their children. Struggling to find printers who would agree to physically produce their zines, and hoping it wouldn't get intercepted by mail/customs officials.)
All while building Western (not in the cowboy sense) media fandom and shipping culture from the ground up, and creating some of the most moving, adventurous, romantic, and even hilarious fanfic/art/meta etc that has stood the test of time and can often be found & enjoyed on AO3 right now!!!
⬆️ This is the very last page of K/S fics on AO3, set for chronological order. The first one currently on AO3's original, physical publication date is December 1st, 1975. And again, this is just what volunteers and authors have decided to upload to AO3!
*** yes, I'll tag it that way sometimes and use it in casual conversation with people who probably don't have the context, but Jim and Spock are forever K/S ("KayEss") to me 💛💙

Join Us for our Fandom In Color Editing Chat!
Tumblr media
As part of Fanlore’s Fandom in Color month, we’re holding two editing chats over on our Discord on Sat July 26 at 10pm UTC (What time is that for me?) and Sun July 27 at 3pm UTC (What time is that for me?}.
What is an “editing chat”? It’s a real-time chat where everyone works on doing some Fanlore editing, usually themed around pages of a certain topic. There’s no requirement to have edited Fanlore before, as we’re happy to show you the ropes!
The focus will be creating and adding to pages related to fans and fandom of color – characters, communities, events, activism, meta essays, and much more. If you’re passionate about expanding Fanlore’s coverage of this extremely under-served area – so are we! We’d love you to come along and take part. All participants will also earn a fun badge to post to their Fanlore user page!
Use this link to join our Discord server, and we’ll join you there for the chat!
-----
We value every contribution to our shared fandom history. If you’re new to editing Fanlore or wikis in general, visit our New Visitor Portal to get started or ask us questions here!

There's a sheith game on itchio, so in light of recent events, you might want to dl it if you want to play it, in case it gets taken down.
I haven't played it yet personally but the art is pretty. It's by @cicilunaart

According to the submitter, they see incest as a mature topic and are wondering if ships that are incestuous should automatically be rated as such, even if the fics themselves do not feature sex or violence.
This poll was submitted to us and we simply posted it so people could vote and discuss their opinions on the matter. If you’d like for us to ask the internet a question for you, feel free to drop the poll of your choice in our inbox and we’ll post them anonymously (for more info, please check our pinned post).

Not to be a technical writer on main, but I've been bumping into the idea lately that the only reason explaining yourself in more detail never seems to work is because neurotypical people are misunderstanding you on purpose, or because they have short attention spans, or because they just hate listening to you talk – and sure, occasionally that's even true, but most of the time the problem you're running into is more fundamental.
Every time you add more detail, you're running the risk of tripping over a bad assumption on your part about the listener's prior knowledge, or hitting the tipping point where they become overwhelmed with new information (and remember that you don't know which parts of what you're saying will be new information for them), or making a leap of logic that isn't as self-evident as you think it is, or any of a dozen other potential snags which, by definition, you will not see coming until it's too late to correct course.
Basically, every piece of information you add multiplies the odds of you getting blindsided by some vector of misunderstanding you didn't anticipate, even as it addresses the ones you did anticipate. The point of diminishing returns where continuing to elaborate increases the odds of unexpected miscommunication more than it decreases the odds of expected miscommunication is much nearer than you'd like.
The most effective act of communication is not the one which contains the most possible information, but the one which contains the smallest amount of information it possibly can while still getting its point across. It sucks, but it's the reality of the situation. People far more autistic than you have been trying for hundreds of years to invent a way of communicating which doesn't work this way, without success.
All of which is to say that "getting to the damn point" is legitimately a communication skill, not just an accommodation for people who aren't paying attention. If it's any consolation, it's something neurotypical people struggle with just as much as anyone else – if it was easy, technical writers wouldn't have jobs!

You know, when I see fictional characters who repress all their emotions, they're usually aloof and very blunt about keeping people at a distance, sometimes to an edgy degree—but what I don't see nearly enough are the emotionally repressed characters who are just…mellow.
Think about it. In real life, the person that's bottling up all their emotions is not the one that's brooding in the corner and snaps at you for trying to befriend them. More often than not, it's that friendly person in your circle who makes easy conversation with you, laughs with you, and listens and gives advice whenever you're upset. But you never see them upset, in fact they seem to have endless patience for you and everything around them—and so you call them their friend, you trust them. And only after months of telling them all your secrets do you realize…
…they've never actually told you anything about themselves.
