the case against My Star 2’s deceptive flash-forward reveal
Before I get started, I just want to say for the record that I have a really high opinion of To My Star 2 in general and both seasons of TMS have a very special place in my heart. Also, Hwang Da Seul is a goddamn genius whose work I admire across the board. That being said, this post is about a specific aspect of the second season of To My Star that I’m not a fan of.
I’m currently rewatching the entirety of To My Star and posting about it. I couldn’t let this aspect of the second season pass without mentioning it, but I didn’t want my thoughts about it to overshadow my other thoughts about the first episode, hence giving these thoughts their own post.
I had already watched To My Star 2 a few times before I read a tumblr post where someone remarked on the fact that certain scenes that appear to be flashbacks are actually scenes from the future. That is to say, the story opens after Seo Joon and Ji Woo have broken up and shows scenes of them together that the viewer naturally assumes are flashbacks, but these scenes take place after they’ve reunited toward the end of the series, at which point they’re shown again.
I guess it has something to do with my ADHD/quite possibly AuDHD brain, but I can be very observant about some things in media while missing things that others find obvious. It’s hard to gauge just how apparent this maneuver was to the average viewer, but maybe most people did notice it. Regardless, I didn’t catch it until I saw that post and subsequently watched the series again.
At first I felt too self-conscious about having missed this detail to stop and think about whether I thought editing the series in this way was a good idea. But since I’m an incorrigible rewatcher, I saw the show quite a few times after I had my realization and had some more time to consider it. And I have to say, the viewpoint I’ve landed on is that this was not a good move. You could make a case that I’m just cranky that I didn’t catch it at first, and actually, that is a piece of it, because I think it’s more subtle than it needs to be and that’s part of the reason it didn’t register for me initially. But I have other reasons as well.
First, let’s take a step back for a second and think about how this sort of maneuver is typically used in TV and film. It’s not uncommon at all for viewers to be shown one or more scenes and then for later revelations to show that assumptions we made about those scenes were incorrect. If you look at this phenomenon in a really broad sense, it happens almost anytime something notable is revealed about a character. But it’s less commonplace for revelations about characters to be radical enough that they make us rethink an entire story. When they do happen, revelations of this sort can be the centerpiece of a story or even its raison d’être.
We’ve all encountered this sort of thing. M. Night Shyamalan made this maneuver his signature. Other filmmakers have dabbled in it, like Scorsese did with Shutter Island. In these sorts of intense examples, we’re asked to re-evaluate pretty much the entirety of the story. Whatever the big revelation is, it’s usually something with a lot of emotional impact. When this is done poorly, it just comes off as a gimmick. When it’s done well, the forceful way the new information hits us serves the themes of the film or series not only by making us sympathize with characters who are suddenly confronted with the big revelation, but also by intensifying our emotions by making us digest an entire story’s worth of information in one go instead of absorbing it over the course of the movie/show.
But this isn’t one of those big revelations that changes the story. Actually, it’s quite the opposite: it changes absolutely nothing. These cute moments between Seo Joon and Ji Woo didn’t happen during their first year together, as it initially seems. But they must have had other interactions that were like that. After all, they had similar moments together at the end of season 1. When it comes to the plot, this little mislead has zero impact.
What other impact does it have? Well, for a first-time viewer the main function of these clips is, to put it bluntly, emotional torture. We see some sweet interactions between Ji Woo and Seo Joon, then find out they’ve broken up. Similar clips come up again here and there and twist the knife a bit more. Even now that I know these snippets are flashes forward, not back, I still find them depressing whenever I rewatch the show. I guess the intense contrast between Seo Joon’s and Ji Woo’s happy times together and how terrible things are at the present time of the story feels bad even though I know everything will be OK. So when I watch the series again with full knowledge of the nature of these clips, I still feel all the pain I did the first time around, or at least 99% of it. But now, it’s further disconnected from the characters' experiences.
It’s interesting that the viewer goes through this shift in perceptions alone. Shifts like this normally happen to viewers in parallel with characters. For example, Bruce Willis's character in The Sixth Sense realizes he’s been dead this whole time, and we realize it with him. But in To My Star season 2, we experience these flashes forward alone. It's not as if Seo Joon and Ji Woo are thinking about these moments but are under the impression that they happened in the past—they don’t know about them at all. So the viewer is on their own. This means the new perspective the viewer gains tells us nothing about any shifts that may be occurring in the characters’ perceptions.
So, if a first-time viewer is observant enough to recognize these apparent flashbacks when they’re shown again at the end of the series, when the narrative has caught up with them on the timeline, what are they supposed to think or feel? To be honest, I’m not sure.
They might reflect on the fact that they erroneously assumed the clips were flashbacks and wonder if they should’ve known better. But that’s not reasonable. The clips are presented in a standard way that almost always means the material being presented is a flashback. The show follows longstanding film/TV conventions in this respect, conventions most of us learned to interpret from an early age. Experienced media viewers learn to pick up cues that imply we’re watching a flashback. We need those cues, and need to be able to read them, in order to understand stories that are presented in standard nonlinear ways. Bottom line, it’s not weird for us to interpret these clips as flashbacks when they are presented to us as such using commonplace editing conventions.
But it’s hard not to feel a little bit stupid when having this realization. It almost seems like the show has played a trick on us and is now saying, “gotcha!” It doesn’t feel great, and it does nothing to serve the experience of the show or reinforce its themes. Like I said, when a big realization hits the audience in a film of TV show, one of the main ways it strengthens their experience of the story is by causing their feelings to parallel the feelings of one or more of the characters. But this reaction doesn't do that. It isn't related to the story in the slightest.
Another way this might be experienced by viewers is less as a commentary on their lack of astuteness and more as an illustration of the filmmakers’ cleverness. I can see why some people who pick up on this maneuver might think, “wow, that’s clever.” Personally, I don’t appreciate this kind of move unless it actually serves the story or clarifies things about the characters. If there’s nothing substantive behind it, then in my book, it’s not very clever after all. That said, if people can appreciate this choice by looking at it that way, hey, I’m all for it. It’s just not something I get any enjoyment from in this instance.
Let’s review. It’s normal and reasonable for viewers to assume these clips are flashbacks. When they turn out not to be, there’s some potential for viewers to doubt themselves, feel stupid, or feel like filmmakers have played a trick on them. The clips still function in the same way emotionally that real flashbacks would have (indeed, there are also actual flashbacks, and they do function similarly). When we learn they actually were moments from the future, this doesn’t change the meaning of the story, provide us with any particular insight, or create any particular emotional impact (other than the possibility of feeling pointlessly embarrassed in a way that has nothing to do with the story).
In summary, I think this maneuver is at least somewhat difficult to notice and understand, has the potential to be somewhat unpleasant for some viewers, and doesn’t serve any useful purpose in the story. I still love TMS 2. I just don’t think this choice adds anything of value to it.
Now that I've got that out of the way, I'll get back to posting about my season 2 rewatch!
Thanks as always to @my-rose-tinted-glasses for being my biggest To My Star sounding board!
