Veles’ parents sure as heck didn’t teach her how to read or write but they did teach her how to read sheet music and compose. What even were her parents. 100% there for her in most of the ways it counted but oof goodbye traditional education, hello selective teaching. Totally wasn’t an intentional decision made so their precious daughter would never ever have even the slightest chance of finding out her parents were career criminals on the run. Oof.
Apath is likely going to teach her how to read and write in Fiorean and Cyrillic at some point, if only because they know what a massive slap in the face it is to not fully know your own people’s language and they’re not about it. While it is a relief Veles can at least speak and understand Fiorean and Serbian, her not knowing how to read or write in either of her mother tongues definitely touches on a sore spot for them.

2, 4, 9
2. what was the best thing in your character’s life?4. what seemingly insignificant memories stuck with your character?9 has been answered! :D
Tumblr media
2 – Her parents presenting her with a Klink when she was old enough for her very first Pokémon ( no four year old is old enough but good luck telling her folks that ). Boss had been her one companion, her only friend, for a good chunk of her life ‘til she started befriending otherPokémon as well. Really he was all she had aside from her parents and their Pokémon for all of her early formative years. Without him she wouldn’t have gotten the socializing, the play, children absolutely need to be healthy.
…albeit, she really isn’t mentally or emotionally healthy at all, but she is a helluva lot better than she could’ve ended up without Boss by her side.
4 – The ones of her mother coming outside with her to sleep on nights Veles felt like she couldn’t stand being inside their cabin, especially as a little girl. As she got older, her mother stopped accompanying her, but she still remembers her mom cuddling up with her and teaching her about the stars til she dozed off. It strikes her as important that her mother let her go outside to sleep and seemed to understand how much Veles hates being boxed in anywhere.
Small, fleeting memories they were, sure. But proof enough that her mom, at least, completely and entirely understood her daughter. GG vila mom u couldve at least told ur vila daughter why she feels like she has to be outside so she could manage it.
Tumblr media
2 – In some ways, it was that chance meeting with Giovanni, and ending up in Rocket. They never would have gotten out of the situation they were in otherwise, their home life would have only continued to fall apart and get worse. It was the first time in their life someone had shown positive interest in them, praised them and recognized their skills. Rocket allowed them to pursue their education, to chase after every thrill and discovery, so long as they maintained their loyalty and made sure their beloved Giovanni got his money.
In literally all of the other ways, it was meeting Abraham. It was getting close to him and being shown what genuine care is like, what healthy platonic love is like, what a semi-functional family is like. It was that first time, despite the shitty hospital-bound circumstances, they called him papa. Oof just thinking that far back tugs on my heartstrings but yes no the best thing to have ever happened to Apath was meeting Tea’s Arceus, and meeting Mirai is right behind that.
Rocket gave them confidence and purpose. Everything else smacked the shit out of them for being downright fucking evil and put them on the right path.
4 – Watching their grandfather do bead work, carrying on projects their grandmother left behind. Bringing him coffee or tea and just standing back to watch him work for hours and hours on end. Not too big of a thing in the grand scheme of things, no. But they saw the sort of unconditional love he had in his heart for his late wife, finishing her work for her, all of it–and it helped to remind them they did come from good people. Their mother is just… not included in that.

how many friends does your character have? how many friends does your character want?
Tumblr media
– Not including Pokémon, she has a grand total of two, one of which being her girlfriend and the other being Apath. Including Pokémon, the nine that make up her and Apath’s teams, and the several dozen that populate her claimed little forest.
– Truth be told, Veles doesn’t really want any more than she has. She’s always lived off the grid, she has a difficult time processing a lot of the stimuli involved in socializing, she just doesn’t see it as worth all the trouble and potential panic attacks to go into town and start cozying up to people. Veles’ll be friends withPokémon all day long, no problem. People? Not so much.
Tumblr media
– Considering their proclivity for latching themself onto people, Apath has a fair few. They’re the sort of person who has a lot of pleasant acquaintances, to be sure, though they’d likely only label two or three people as close / good friends.
– All of them. Apath wants all of the friends. They enjoy being in warm social spaces and spending time around people with good vibes and good energy. Realistically, though, Apath would probably be happier with just being able to bump another person up to close / good friend status instead of ending up with more sorta-kinda friends. Not so much more friends they desire but stronger and deeper bonds with the ones they already have.

– While Apath loves all things bitter and spicy, Veles is the exact opposite. Outside of instant coffee, she isn’t a huge fan of anything overly bitter, and she can barely handle a mild hot sauce ( never mind anything Apath tier spicy ). But she does have an absolutely massive sweet tooth she satisfies with fruit and the like–most candies don’t agree with her considering her mostly raw diet, though she does like indulging sometimes. Aside from simple sweets, she’s also pretty fond of salty/savory combinations.
…though her metabolism is absolutely ridiculous and she’ll eat anything put in front of her. Feed her. Give her all of the snacks. Veles burns calories faster than she can get them in some days and feeding her is the quickest way to get on her good side. It’s also a sign that you Made It if she willingly shares something she’s eating with you.
Tumblr media
– Apath remains to be a Not Really That Good character in terms of moral alignment even after taking time to go off on their little self discovery journey. Another way in which these two muses differ. Veles, despite her upbringing and proclivity towards anxious paranoia about people, believes humanity is innately good and it is only circumstance that breeds evil. Apath, however, interprets the world around them much differently, in a “where would evil come from if not directly from the hearts of men?” kind of way.
Where their neighbor and Friendapist, their Friend Therapist™ may see goodness, Apath does not. They strive to do good things, they do slot in nicely with the chaotic good alignment nowadays, though without any rose tinted glasses. They’re still very much capable of committing acts of evil if they believe they’re doing the right thing.

– Veles is going to end up following Mina around like a lost duckling every time she’s in Alola just “??? familiar. good vibes. good aura. good friend, like this friend, love this friend”. Probably end up declaring herself Mina’s #1 fan at some point because she has no impulse control and would absolutely adore watching Mina hard at work painting or drawing etc.
She tries making up for being a nuisance by giving Mina fruit. Random fruits every time she shows up, sometimes a gift basket full of just fruit. Holiday gifts would include jams and preserves she’s made herself, homemade fruit leather candies, things of the like.
veles @ mina: ur so cool. u have comfy vibes. best. ur best. Best™. here have food :)

real long canon post under the read more!! :D
Veles has genuinely spent her entire life living off the grid--the only time she was part of any civilized society was when she was far too young to remember, in Fiore with her parents. Her mother was pregnant with her when they moved there and they’d ended up out in the middle of nowhere by the time Veles was old enough to actually make and retain any memories.
They’d always told her it was because the government and other people could never be trusted. Unbeknownst to her, they were rather high profile jewel thieves on the run after nearly getting busted ( right when they were comfortably wealthy and ready to retire to a cozy little bougie life ). She’d lived with them in Fiore up until she was nineteen. Her mother and father had told her to sit tight so they could go into the nearest town to top off supplies and just...never came back.
While Veles has yet to find out about it, her parents hadn’t been careful enough covering their tracks, and it was poor timing that had them walking right into Interpol. She’s always assumed she just did something wrong and they left her, or they just got spooked by something and had to go on the run again and were definitely going to come back to get her. That isn’t to say she hasn’t tried finding them. She has. But her parents, turns out, never gave her their real names--even her last name isn’t really their family name ( overly cautious people they were ). Without actual names to go off of and only aliases, not knowing they’re aliases, she just can’t find them or figure out what happened to them.
Veles waited two years for them to come back to her. Two years, her first two years completely and utterly alone, without any other human contact. Doesn’t help matters the only human contact she’d had up until leaving Fiore was with her parents.
Her only friends have been Pokemon, her only other family has only ever been Pokemon. Growing up in the wilds is why she’s got such a keen understanding of plants and how to splice them, their many uses, so on and so forth. It’s also why she’s able to communicate with Pokemon despite not knowing their particular language. So far as her adoration of music--instruments and the like were the only luxuries she’s ever had with her family. Her father loved to sing, her mother loved to play, no matter where they were, they had music. They always had music.
Unfortunately, living out in the middle of nowhere does tend to mean one ends up emotionally and somewhat mentally stunted. Veles is incredibly immature, her education is barely passable by societal standards ( but you’d be hard pressed to find someone even half as gifted as she is with survival, with absolutely thriving in the wilds, with her heart-to-heart connections and easily formed bonds with Pokemon, and her passion and skill in music is something beautiful ). She also simply can’t handle the sound of too much human life--it’s foreign, she doesn’t like it, she physically cannot process too much sound without having an overload.
Her decision to go to Sinnoh was spurred on by an emotional breakdown. Finally catching onto the fact her parents were never going to come back for her, no matter how long she waited. Veles felt abandoned, betrayed, hurt. So, she decided to run somewhere they couldn’t find her even if they did come looking for her, not having the emotional maturity or social maturity to understand why that wasn’t even a remotely good idea.
It took a good long while of performing on the streets in the nearest town to save up enough to book a one way ticket. But once she did, she never even thought of looking back. Veles got herself a map and found the densest, most untouched forest she could and moved herself into the first livable place she could find.
Over the years, her cave has become very homely. Surprisingly clean for a natural rock formation, with comfortable bedding piled up for sleeping and herbs strung up to dry all over the place. Books and journals and grimoires she’s kept over the years kept in neat piles and hand drawn maps of the area. Veles even splurged on some chisels and the like to dig out a fire pit and into the cave walls to make shelves, so on and so forth.
She’s also rather clean and well-kept for someone who’s probably not too far from being feral. Her mother made sure to teach her all about hygiene and how to stay healthy--and her personal studies have taught her which herbs can be made into soaps, so on and so forth. Veles has a nice river she likes to go bathe in ( downstream of where the Pokemon like to drink, of course ). So far as scent, she does rub herself down with mint and lavender, finding it a soothing and refreshing combination to smell on herself all day.
The only vice she has is instant coffee--she wanted so desperately to be like her father, she ended up developing a taste for the bitter stuff. It’s something she looks for every time she comes into town for supplies.
Lately, she hasn’t been drinking it as much.
Too many tourists ditch their Pokemon just inside the forest because they like the local Pokemon more. It reminds her of herself and how she feels like her parents abandoned her in a forest, too.
She doesn’t want to be like her father anymore.
u all know by now i cant behave my damn self and bully all of my muses what were u expecting ehehehehe

– After being away as long as they were and then coming back out of the blue, Apath doesn’t really expect much out of any of their prior friends. The same holds true with Sawyer. They’ll maintain emotional and mental distance because they don’t want to let nostalgia settle in and potentially blind them to being able to see how much Sawyer has grown as a trainer and person ( for better or worse ).
Given enough time to get to see more of him and spend more time with him, Apath will 100% end up admiring and looking up to Sawyer as a trainer. More than they already did before, for that matter. They’ll come to see him as an inspiration regardless of whether or not they do manage to rekindle their friendship with him and redouble their efforts with their own training and studies.
Could see them ending up as frenemies this time around, actually.

Writing Apath’s accent again has got me thinking since I don’t think this is a point I ever actually brought up? A lot of the southern drawls / accents you hear on TV and in movies is the high society old money kind of drawl. Real refined, very honeyed, very intentional in some ways.
That is not the sort of southern twang Apath has. All of the honey, all of the twang, but definitely not the social class. You had a different sort of accent depending on where you lived and even what socioeconomic class you were part of. Rich southern drawl is drastically different than impoverished southern drawl. Old rich families have an accent, yes, but they also enunciate all of their words.
Rest of southerners, not so much. We say y’ain’t, y’all. Y’ain’t. You will never hear a rich southerner in good company say “y’ain’t”. Apath has my family’s accent, which is to say, broke ass farmer speak. Which is radically different than even the sort of accent you’d hear in towns or cities down south--living in the middle of nowhere has an impact on how you talk, too.
A lot of family members that’ll go down south for holidays can’t actually understand some of the older members of the family that’ve been there for their entire lives along with previous generations. Words get mashed together, we cut corners, so on and so forth. My accent is definitely more Baltimore nowadays, but oof. Oof. Get me around my family down south and it’s right back to broke hillbilly for a minute.
So. Yes. I’unno just felt like an important distinction to make because it is definitely not the stereotypical rich people drawl you’ll hear in entertainment media. Radically different. I honestly think true southern drawls are way prettier and way more pleasing to listen to than those sorts anyways, but. /shrugs/.
