art tutorial alignment chart
(my honest opnion)
Tumblr media
personal alignment explanations below (warning looooooooong)
drawabox's got that lawful good aura to me. promising great improvement through a more rigid less flowy kinda drawing (boxes boxes boxes) yeah that's kinda lawful good ig. kinda resource for those who care for their drawings to look more accurate to perspective and proportion than just straight up wingin it dont have much to say about sinix. he's peak. he gets that neutral good label from me. morpho books by themselves would prooobably be lawful good (but less rigid more flowy) but i gave em the chaotic good label because that's the feel i get from the morpho fans themselves, who all preach about the greatness these books hold within their small thin compact travel sizes. it's partially because they're one of the very few books that actually teach about body fat (which is... kinda concerning if you really think about it. body fat is weirdly scarce among regular art tutorial books despite it having as much importance in the body as muscle and bone) and i put draw like a sir here because he himself has that chaotic good vibe. he teaches stuff (especially for beginners) REALLY well in a super easy to grasp manner and isn't afraid to be a bit humorous in his videos bob ross's pick is a lil weird, but lemme try to explain. his videos feel less like tutorials and more like... meditation i guess??? and i mean that's fine i guess. less for learning and more for unwinding by drawing along. we like a chill guy. i see less people on youtube use his videos to seriously learn and more people use his videos for extremely goofy art challenges lol. neutral in terms of educational value but lawful in terms of vibes ig lavendertowne is true neutral cuz i find her kiiiiinda mid. some of her videos are fine and there's a few interesting ones but most of them are kinda boring, there's better more interesting ones out there with similar subjects, especially on tutorials. bluebiscuit is also true neutral but a tier above lavendertowne. she's fine i dont hate her i guess her tutorials are nice for newbies and pretty accessible but still. there's videos with the same subjects as hers that i think are way better and more extensive ig true neutral (derogatory) and true neutral (affectionate) ethan becker, holy shit is this man chaotic neutral, both in personality and manner of teaching. he teaches some hyper-specific and potentially really useful skills for drawing anatomy and shape construction in a very simplified way (use the weirdly shaped triangle for everything) BUT the way he teaches it... god, he does it in the most drill-sergeant, nitpicky, push-you-down insults and spits on you kinda manner ever that it's actually kinda hard to actually retain the information you've learned in your brain even if you still remember how it went, somehow. i'd still recommend him but only if you enjoy being a masochist. there's prolly two kinda people who leave from an ethan becker tutorial: those who learn really fucking well from him, and those who felt so ashamed and insulted by him that their art progress and motivation just dropped by an entire year. megamegamikey... i mean, i havent watched his videos, but there's a good reason why i won't. i can just tell his tutorials are only for those who wish to draw anime girl tiddy gooner stuff, and not for learning actual serious anatomy (it's on the opposite side of the morpho books on the chart for a reason), and i dont wanna learn big bazoinga shit!!! if i wish to learn booba i will learn from the most accurate least sexy boingboing sourcessss!!!!!
Tumblr media
also if you post a video with that as the title and thumbnail there's at least one thing VERY wrong with you and i will not trust your opinions on children and women anyways kooleen is neutral evil. i don't need an introduction. when i compare myself to her i actually develop pride and confidence from it instead of shame and envy like most cases because like. i feel so SMUG being able to draw and come up with much more interesting ideas than her. i can conjure up twisted beasts and floating vistas of wandering giants and the horrors of the self and gay fish yaoi from my rich and vast mind palace. she can only conjure up basic-bitch kpop boys and girls from her vaguely racist eurocentric-beauty-standard worldview. I am BEYOND her. I am STRONGER than her. I am SMARTER and more CREATIVE than her. I am more CHARMING and FUNNY than her. I am OBJECTIVELY better than her in EVERY SINGLE WAAAYYYYYY (evil laugh)
and last but not least. i think those how to draw manga books are on the same level of "if i give this to you as a christmas present i really fucking hate you" as these things
Tumblr media
(only how to draw manga guy that's actually kinda good is mark crilley. he's not the best but he's an alright starting point. along with morpho he's also got the only tutorial books that actually teach about drawing fat people (though only for a few pages. it's still a very kind-hearted gesture, especially since anime casts tend to lean towards super skinny so i kinda saw that he wanted those who learned his wisdom to change that lol) whhheheheenrhbefdushid i loev art

Hi! I have a question about you next gen: how would your Oc react to quarantine? Would they be happy staying at home or extremely annoyed by the company of their siblings? Apart from cooking (which is obvious) what would they do with their spare time? You can choose any of your Oc you find more interesting to talk about in this situation. Thank you in advance! Stay healthy!
Hey anon!
First: I hope you stay healthy as well 🍀 Second: Thank you for the ask + giving me a chance to talk about my kiddos 🙏 That’s always a joy for me to do
Kimiko would certainly struggle with quarantine. The fact that she can’t work in Yukihira-Diner upsets her and she feels her life lacks a lot of excitement during those days. She’d still try to make the best out of it and would most likely put on YouTube tutorials and the likes to teach herself some new things to try. Also she would help her father clean the house every second day. Her brother Hiraku in the meantime actually gets some E10-related tasks and such from Noboru additionally to the school-work that Totsuki would possibly give out for their students to do over quarantine. He barely does any of them. Rather he spends most of his time with texting and YouTube/Netflix, aside from experimenting dishes. He does miss the drill and excitement from Totsuki and all the parties where he is the center of attention.
-
Hiroshi does find his enjoyment at staying home. He helps out his mother a lot, plays with his younger siblings and also gets pretty crafty. The entire Aldini-Tadokoro-Family handles the situation rather well and is good at giving themselves distractions and things to do. The only major thing that specifically Isami is anxious about is how long it might take till they can see their relatives form Tuscany again.
In Tuscany, Mika is scared of possibly getting bored. She spends a good bunch of time with either working out with her mother (they have a work-out-space in their mansion) or binge-watching romance-series on Netflix. But she definitely longs for outside activities and hopes it will be over till her favorite season summer kicks in.
-
The Hayamas have a really big garden at their house and of course, Kaori therefore spends most of her time gardening. If not outside with her flowers, she either reads or watches a vintage movie with her mother. Akio, in the meantime assists his father had experimenting with fragrances for a possible new perfume or makes some photo-albums with pictures from past travels. Overall, the Hayamas don’t get much time to relax normally and try to make the best out of having to stay at home.
-
The Nakiris live in such a big mansion and probably, out of all the characters, have therefore the most moving space of all. The fact that they can’t either visit the Yukihiras or their family in Denmark is certainly a drowner though. Both Lola and Mona distract theirselves mainly with working out with their father, Netflix (with Lola watching shows like “Gotham” or “American Horror Story” or idk what and Mona watching Slice-Of-Life stuff and even getting into K-Drama) and listening to music (Heavy Metal for Lola and Techno for Mona ofc).
-
Suzume (and her father) understand theirselves as valuable sources of entertainment in these days. Suzume gets pretty active on social media with video-clips and tons and tons of memes. While she definitely longs for the outside and more social activities, Suzu is not one to get bored easily. She works out a lot (She actually does Aerobic every morning ahdsh yeah in her 80s-Aerobic-Costume), practices her calligraphy, entertains her family with occasional dance-numbers and so on. Takayuki in the meantime mainly plays WoW or works out with his big sister. Their father also subjects them to a lot of family games and activities though, so there’s also lots of movies watched and lots of charade, Monopoly and what not.
-
The Mimasakas are generally one of the closest families in terms of spending time together and affection. They find a lot of activities to do together and are also the most open to compromises (like in terms of which movies to watch and such). Ran also offers some advice to students of Totsuki online, who might be more stressed out by the quarantine (and it’s Ran, so she more or less knows exactly who those students are). She also sews a lot, alongside Ayano. Ayano also plays a lot with her dolls and hosts an afternoon tea-party everyday, to which sometimes Subaru, Kazuo, Nao or Ran also join. Kazuo meanwhile watches a lot of romance movies and shows, writes poems or practices his dancing to impress Mika.
-
Yasu either cleans up, carves some wood or assits his mother in one way or the other. Occasionally he will also just play some video games or watch some documentaries on Netflix.
-
Chieko !! READS !! She reads it all: Books, E-Books, Essays, Poems, the product-list on her milk-tea….etc. She also plays a lot of chess with Zenji. At times she gets really annoyed by Takahiro’s pranks and such but she does well overall.
-
Hideyoshi expands on his social media presence during this time and actually posts videos with updates and such everyday and on how he’s doing and he occasionally even streams reactions to YouTube videos or playing video games.  Him and his family also just have their own little karaoke nights at times. But in the end, Hideyoshi is one of the candidates who just wants quarantine to be over since he misses the excitement of parties and the likes.
-
Daisuke and his family actually have a movie marathon going on. They go through all kinds of vintage movies from Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart to classics of the 80s like “Back to the Future” (Funfact, that’s Daisuke’s favorite movie) or “Ferris Bueller’s Day-Off”. Occasionally Daisuke also uploads videos of him playing guitar, as he does spend a lot of time practicing it during these days.
-
Masashi mainly either works out or practices calligraphy aside from sharpening his cooking-skills. Albeit he also practices some other Japanese customs here and there. He also puzzles occasionally! Mainly after arguments with Kei! (And the two argue a lot in the end….quarantine is rather difficult for this family being honest). Kei meanwhile shuts himself in his room for the most part and plays video games, like he’d also do on holiday days. He does get dragged out of his room a lot in the end, mainly by Nene, being the concerned and family-oriented mom as ever, who sees this as a chance to get some family-bonding time done.  Often argues with either Masashi or his father during these days. Shigeo kind off just attempts to use this as a chance to engage more in the hobbies he usually has little time for, although the feeling of being unproductive certainly irks him a little. And so he reads quite a lot of crime-novels, plays Sudoko on his phone or watches something on Netflix. As I said, Nene also tries to use these days to get everyone closer together and often tries to come up with activities for all of them to do together. They often end up arguing on whichever movie to watch.
Generally, they’re all not really used to just…that much free time and even if they don’t have to stay at home…this family surely can be difficult a lot of times.
-
Kiyoko would be lying if she said she wasn’t a little upset about not being able to go shopping and all of that. She keeps her Instagram and other social media active though and posts something everyday, often including suggestions on what to do throughout the quarantine (as a rich girl in a large mansion she does find some things to do). She also spends a lot of her time with her sisters actually. Mainly dressing them up (Yoshiko is annoyed). Moe watches some recordings/movie-versions of her favorite ballets or plays Animal Crossing New Horizons some cute-enough game with Kei thanks to the internet connection.
-
Noboru keeps himself busy with administrative work as first seat even from home and when he does take a break from it: he mainly paints of course. He looks up pictures of landscapes on google and draws them. It’s not the same as being outside and painting to him, but its good enough as distraction. He also reads a lot.

Question: do all the jsab levels have physical forms or is it just the bosses? Yknow, levels like termination shock & corruption (the tutorial level)
I’m guessing you’re asking me?? I hope so because this is where I get to ramble about behind the scenes stuff the characters don’t know about! :D
I’m sorry I wrote an entire damn essay to answer your question I’m just a massive nerd and got excited.
Up until “Long Live The New Fresh” the levels aren’t really levels, in this universe think of them more like conceptual representations of things. “Corrupted” is kind of like the introduction that ‘Hey, there’s two inherent universal forces that are in direct opposition to each other.’ The next three levels are kind of like, representative of Square’s creation of time, space, and the rules set in place for life to flourish (”Chronos”, “Milky Ways”, and “Logic Gatekeeper” respectively.) Basically all that is just the basis for my entire thinking of “Hey, this is like a creation myth.”
After that, where there is a level it is where the barrier between the world and the void is thinner, and thus Square can enter it to get from point A to point B, like a shortcut. The void is a place with a lot of the residual excess energy from the creation of the world floating around, and so even though at that point Square is still largely seperate from his original power, he’s still connected to it enough to be able to harness a small portion of whatever is knocking around, in order to progress.
Fresh was created from the creation energy given off from Square’s creation reacting with the corruption, pulling it together until it forms a functional being, albeit one that is still subject to the nature of what corruption is, an undeniably destructive force. This is what the corruption bullet patterns in the levels are, the corruption that exists in the void trying to form life, fed by the leftover creation energy, and kick started by the energy boost Fresh gets from a portion of the triangle power, as at this point he’s still intrinsically connected to the corruption.
Sometimes it can only manage to come together to form patterns, sometimes it can manage rudimentary environments and forms of life, mimicking the life that already exists while actively trying to wreck anything that comes near it. Even in places like the factory, it can imitate industrial constructs. But nothing can really come anywhere near the complexity of a fully sapient being like Fresh. There’s just not the necessary levels of energy around like there was during his creation.
So no, none of the levels have a physical character relating to them, apart from a few exceptions, i.e. the bosses. You already know about Fresh and his various forms, and Q.
“Lycanthropy” is a corrupted flower that was tenacious enough to get through the thinning of the barrier after Square to where creation energy and corruption is more concentrated, allowing it to grow and develop more powerful abilities while in that environment. The corruption didn’t leave any lasting effects after it was cleansed and he’s now a happy little wiggly flower boi who lives in the spring on top of the mountain. :D
I still have no idea about “Barracuda”. It very much is something that seems to genuinely be alive, but I have no clue what reason there could be to cause the spontaneous creation of another thinking, feeling creature. Maybe it’s just a construct, attacking only because it’s on autopilot and isn’t truly alive. Maybe it’s a weird anomaly. That’s something I’m going to have to think of and see if it becomes relevant in the future.

Exploring The Cultural And Linguistic Blending Of Widespread Music Genres
^ F. Holt, Genre in Fashionable Music (College of Chicago Press, 2007), ISBN 0226350398 , p. 56. There have been entire tutorial papers dedicated to figuring out why Swedes so disproportionately rule in style music. There are less-than-scientific theories - it is darkish a lot of the 12 months, so let's go inside and be creative! - and plenty of more reasonable ones. Those embody a nationwide tendency to be earlier adopters; role models resembling Martin and ABBA, and the globalized audiences they captivated; and a profound national proficiency in English, the unofficial language of pop. Hindustani Classical Music in Fashionable India is a crucial part of the cultural landscape of Northern India. The custom of Indian Music has developed simultaneously in two cultures. One is within the north, masking the entire region of Dwarka to Manipur and Srinagar to Belgaon, and the opposite is in the south, prevalent in Andhra Pradesh, mickisabella77433.mobie.in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Both of these streams of music developed virtually parallel melodic practices, in sync with the widespread musical heritage and customary musical ideals, http://www.magicaudiotools.com similar to the language construction in the North anSouth. The pre-eminent British composer George Benjamin additionally hints that the creation of music will be less mystical and extra mathematical than we would assume. Benjamin - who, at sixteen, was compared to Mozart by Olivier Messiaen - says an novice interest in science is his recurring preoccupation". Although he too had no formal science coaching past college, he says that reading books on subjects as diverse as chaos idea, symmetry, the notion of time, prime numbers and code-breaking has proved unexpectedly stimulating". Through the years he has developed quasi-mathematical methods which can act as a software to assist the creation of complicated structures … which the intuition alone could not manage". This book traces the development of pop from the seven-inch forty-five rpm single, introduced within the late forties, to the decl I vacillated on the score for this lengthy book. It's a broad survey of well-liked music for the reason that mid-fifties. Every of the 5 dozen chapters covers a narrow interval, title dropping and cramming music titles along the way in which, giving the sense of a surface history whizzing by. The early chapters come throughout as deeper and extra satisfying than the late ones. Three and a half stars. Rhythm and blues (or R&B) was coined as a musical advertising time period in the late Forties by Jerry Wexler at Billboard magazine, used to designate upbeat standard music carried out by African American artists that combined jazz and blues. It was initially used to identify the fashion of music that later developed into rock and roll. By the Nineteen Seventies, rhythm and blues was getting used as a blanket time period to describe soul and funk as effectively. Right this moment, the acronym "R&B" is sort of all the time used as a substitute of "rhythm and blues", and defines the trendy version of the soul and funk influenced African-American pop music that originated with the demise of disco in 1980. I do not know that you will cowl this, but I've no doubt that for songs with primarily classic rock instrumentation resembling guitar, bass, keyboards, C main or sharp keys equivalent to G, E and D major are most common. That is so because because of the development and tuning of guitars, they sound greatest and feel most comfy to their players in these keys. Additionally, whereas the guitar is without doubt one of the most difficult devices to play with actual virtuosity, it is without doubt one of the best instruments to study to play with out formal instruction, thus most guitarists are guitar gamers, but not musicians; they don't know music principle and might't read music. And lo and behold, among the first chords any self taught guitarist learns are C, G, D, F and E. Non-sightreading guitarists-most of them-normally have great problem taking part in in flat keys (apart from F) and sharp keys with more than four sharps.
The music usually layered soaring, typically- reverberated vocals, usually doubled by horns, over a background "pad" of electrical pianos and "rooster-scratch" rhythm guitars performed on an electric guitar "The 'hen scratch' sound is achieved by lightly urgent the strings against the fretboard after which rapidly releasing them just sufficient to get a barely muted scratching sound while continuously strumming very close to the bridge." 71 Other backing keyboard devices include the piano , electric organ (during early years), string synth, and electromechanical keyboards such because the Fender Rhodes electrical piano, Wurlitzer electric piano, and Hohner Clavinet Synthesizers are also pretty widespread in disco, especially within the late Seventies. These '80s remixes are also renegade efforts, albeit made with love, and too exist solely inside a restricted framework. They're not on the market, and most often can only be streamed, not downloaded. Sifting by way of dozens of re-dos to search out the true gems requires endurance, and leaves room for the chance that a listener might detect one thing enchanting and totally different. Especially for listeners too younger to have firsthand '80s nostalgia, the longing they provoke is for the early promise of music on the Web: the pre-streaming, pre-algorithm days when throwing yourself into exploration yielded mind-increasing dividends. From its earliest days the rock & roll label lined a broad musical terrain. The cliché is that rock & roll was a melding of nation music and blues, and if you're speaking about, say, Chuck Berry or Elvis Presley, the outline, by way of simplistic, does fit. But the black innercity vocal-group sound, which itself was diverse sufficient to accommodate the tough, soulful Midnighters and 5 Royales, the neo-barbershop harmonies of fowl teams" like the Orioles and the Crows and the kid sound of Frankie Lymon and the Youngsters or Shirley and Lee, had little to do with both blues or nation music of their purer kinds. The idea of a inflexible, two-dimensional Carta, however related on the edges by bending the airplane to a cylindrical form, results in different fascinating projections and visualizations. As a result of there are so few genres in the beginning of time (19th century, early twentieth century), and the quantity of new genres has dramatically decreased within the last two decades, it's solely a small step away of wanting at the Carta as an actual projection of a sphere, thus seeing the world of in style music as a three-dimensional, planet-like structure: the Music Globe. On this globe, the north pole" represents the origin of all genres (the past), where the south pole" represents the (theoretical) endpoint (the longer term). The equator is right in between, at the cut-off date where essentially the most completely different genres emerged, across the 80s or 90s.

Star Wars: 10 Movie Plot Holes Filled In By The Marvel Comics
The Star Wars saga has been going strong for over 40 years now, so it’s hardly surprising that several plot holes have cropped up during the time. While these gaffes are occasionally addressed on-screen – like when Attack of the Clones indirectly clarified that Yoda trained Obi-Wan before Qui-Gon took over – typically, it falls to other tie-in media to plug any storytelling gaps that arise.
So if there’s a particular continuity error that’s really bugging you about everyone’s favorite galaxy far, far away, chances are there’s a novel, TV show or comic book that’s already fixed it. Indeed, Marvel’s Star Wars comics in particular have built a well-earned reputation for crafting satisfying answers to many of the saga’s biggest unexplained questions – including those we’ve rounded-up below.
RELATED: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: 10 Showdowns We Want To See
10 Why Does Vader Take Orders From Tarkin?
Tumblr media
The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi firmly position Darth Vader as the second most feared guy in the galaxy, with only Emperor Palpatine surpassing him in power and authority. So how come the Sith Lord plays second fiddle to Grand Moff Tarkin when we first meet him in A New Hope? It’s one of the biggest discontinuities in the original trilogy – but fortunately, Marvel’s Darth Vader comics have it covered.
Early issues in the series establish that the Emperor initially played Vader off against the Empire’s top brass, which meant occasionally taking orders from the likes of high-ranking officers like Tarkin. What’s more, we later witness a violent encounter between Vader and Tarkin that seemingly engenders a lasting mutual respect between the pair, and explains the collaborative relationship they subsequently adopt on-screen.
9 How Does Princess Leia Remember Her Mother?
Tumblr media
Revenge of the Sith’s protracted denouement ticks off a laundry list of major Star Wars moments fans had been waiting to witness for over two decades. Arguably the most important of these is the birth of Luke and Leia Skywalker, which fittingly coincides with their father’s rebirth as Darth Vader. It’s a suitably emotional scene, and it’s made all the more emotional when the twins’ mother, Padmé Amidala, passes away shortly after.
But this also causes a problem for the saga’s official canon – after all, in Return of the Jedi, Leia tells Luke that she remembers their mother (albeit in fairly abstract fashion), which seems…unlikely. Enter: the Princess Leia mini-series, which subtly suggests that our heroine’s latent Force potential is the source of her otherwise impossible childhood memories.
8 When Did Luke Learn To Use A Lightsaber?
Tumblr media
The original Star Wars trilogy features several memorable scenes of Luke Skywalker learning to become a fully-fledged Jedi Knight, but his lightsaber lessons are almost totally glossed over. Seriously: Obi-Wan Kenobi only taught Luke the absolute basics – deflecting incoming blaster fire – while the days, weeks or (if you want to be really generous) months he spent training with Master Yoda didn’t include a single saber technique tutorial (on screen, at least).
That leaves continuity-conscious fans in a bit of a pickle: how do they justify the formidable swordplay Luke displays when duelling Darth Vader or tearing through Jabba the Hutt’s cronies? It’s simple – they catch up on Marvel’s main Star Wars title. Set between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, this ongoing series elaborates on the lightsaber combat coaching Luke underwent with the Gamemaster, as well as additional theory on the subject he gleaned from Obi-Wan’s journals.

7 What Happened To All The Prequel-Era Technology?
Tumblr media
While the technology seen in the Star Wars prequels is (generally) less advanced than the hardware of later generations, it’s nevertheless hard to swallow that none of this gear crops up in subsequent episodes. You’re telling us that nobody has any use for mobile weapons platforms like the droidekas, or could see the appeal in zipping around in a Jedi starfighter?
Fortunately, Marvel’s Star Wars comic books have this covered across the board, and prequel-era tech appears prominently in several stories. From Darth Vader heading up a squad of battle droids to Thrawn collecting buzz droids, and right on through to Luke Skywalker squaring off against MagnaGuards, the comics continue the proud tradition of recycling the saga is famous for.
6 Why Didn’t Chewbacca Receive A Medal?
Tumblr media
OK, we’ll admit it: as plot holes go, Chewbacca not being awarded a medal during the closing moments of A New Hope is hardly galaxy-shattering stuff. But dang it, the flagrant disregard the Rebel Alliance shows for Chewie’s pivotal role in the destruction of the Death Star has always bothered us – to the point that we’re worried the Rebellion might have xenophobic tendencies!
Thank goodness for the Chewbacca mini-series Marvel published back in 2015, then. Here, we see the kind-hearted Wookiee bestow a medal identical to those seen in A New Hope upon a brave young girl named Zarro. The clear implication here is that Chewbacca did indeed receive a medal for his services, presumably at a separate ceremony not depicted on the big screen.
5 How Was General Grievous A Match For Jedi Knights?
Tumblr media
Jedi Knights are legendary for their Force-powered prowess on the battlefield, however that doesn’t mean that non-Force sensitive opponents can’t defeat them on occasion. But even if the Republic’s sworn protectors aren’t unbeatable, it’s a bit hard to swallow that General Grievous supposedly cut down enough of them to line his cloak with their lightsabers, as shown in Revenge of the Sith.
We think we’ve found the answer to this conundrum though, in the pages of Star Wars: Age Of Republic – General Grievous. In this mini-series from Marvel, it’s revealed that the cyborg General – who is basically just a brain and a few organs inside a droid body – has inadvertently severed his connection to the Force, a horrific condition so unique it’s likely to blame for throwing his Jedi assailants off their game.
RELATED: Star Wars: Rey's 10 Best Moments (So Far)
4 Why Is The Jedi Temple Still Part Of Coruscant’s Skyline?
Tumblr media
Before Star Wars was sold to Disney, the saga’s creator George Lucas was notorious for tinkering with the original trilogy each time it was re-released on home media. One of the less controversial changes Lucas made was the addition of two familiar landmarks to the Coruscant skyline during Return of the Jedi’s montage sequence: the Senate and the Jedi Temple.
At first, this seemed like a rare instance of Lucas inserting elements from the prequels without causing any damage…but did he? After all, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense that Emperor Palpatine would preserve a gigantic monument to the Jedi Order. Luckily, Marvel’s Thrawn mini-series saves the day here, clarifying that Palpatine converted the Temple into his Imperial Palace – which is exactly the kind of perverse gesture we’d expect from the Dark Lord of the Sith!
3 Why Is Vader’s Fortress On Mustafar?
Tumblr media
Darth Vader’s castle being located on Mustafar in Rogue One left more than a few fans scratching their heads. Sure, Sith Lords are all about maintaining their rage – and living in the same place where you were dismembered and burnt to a crisp is enough make anyone cranky – but it still seemed like an odd place for Vader to set up shop, given his options.
Why not his homeworld, Tatooine, instead? Dude has a whole bunch of terrible memories to draw on from his time spent on that desert planet, not just a lone (admittedly horrific) experience. But as it turns out, the very nature of Mustafar itself is the reason it plays host to Fortress Vader, not Tatooine. As recounted in Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith, a locus for Dark Side energies resides beneath the volcanic world’s crust, which Vader can tap into via his Fortress’s tuning fork-like properties.
2 Why Did The Death Star Take So Long To Build?
Tumblr media
Moon-sized battle station the Death Star took a long time to build: while construction commenced during the finale of Revenge of the Sith, it’s not finished until Rogue One nearly 20 years later. At first glance, this stacks up – we’re talking about a humongous feat of engineering here. However, the second, even bigger Death Star’s much shorter assembly period – although not quite complete, it was famously fully armed and operational in four years, tops – turns this logic on its head!
Happily, the Thrawn mini-series came up with a solution to this dilemma that is both a stroke of genius and painfully obvious, and it all boils down to secrecy. Prior to A New Hope, the Empire still had to tiptoe around the Senate, which meant resources needed to be sourced covertly. Once the Senate was abolished, keeping things hush-hush was no longer a concern, so construction on Death Star II could be fast tracked.
1 When Did Vader Find Out That Luke Was Alive?
Tumblr media
Another instance of George Lucas altering existing Star Wars lore, new dialogue added to The Empire Strikes Back – coupled with the baby bump on Padme’s lifeless body in Revenge of the Sith – indicates that Darth Vader only recently became aware his son Luke was still alive. This is problematic, as the Sith Lord is shown to be aware of Luke’s existence already, in scenes that appear prior to the inserted exchange – so when exactly did Vader discover his kid had survived? And is this a glaring goof?
Not according to the Darth Vader comic book series, which confirms that the iconic baddie received the news about his Luke shortly after the events of A New Hope. The intel came from none other than famed bounty hunter Boba Fett and Vader kept it to himself – which means that he was only playing dumb when Palpatine later presents him with the same information in Empire (which is sorta implied, anyway).

The Importance of the Basics
I am currently helping two children of a family friend with their schoolwork. What has surprised me the most is how little time seems to be spent on the basics in class. Now, this might sound trite, but without the basics, it really is almost impossible to develop a high level of proficiency. This is particularly true for subjects like English and mathematics that build on previous work.
Allow me to furnish two examples.
One of the most important concepts for a high school students to master in mathematics is negative numbers and how they work. For instance, a negative number multiplied by a negative number yields a positive result. In contrast, a negative number multiplied by a positive number gives a negative result. For convenience, this can be summarised as:
positive x positive = positive
negative x negative = positive
negative x  positive = negative
positive x negative = negative
Now, the rules for division are the same since division is simply the opposite of multiplication. Where things get complicated (relatively speaking) is addition and subtraction. In simple terms:
Adding a negative is like subtracting a positive
Subtracting a negative is like adding a positive
What makes this complicated is that when you add a negative number to a positive number, the sign of the result depends on which number (the positive number or the negative number) had a larger absolute value. This means that the sign of the result must be determined on a case by case basis, unlike with multiplication and division where the rules can simply be applied in a more general sense.
What I’ve noticed in the two people I’m helping – and in others I’ve encountered – is that it is very easy to make mistakes when adding and subtracting negative numbers. The most striking thing, however, is how little time is spent drilling students. Instead, they are simply given some rules and a few questions before being introduced to more difficult material.
However, this, I believe, is a mistake. When dealing with something like negative numbers, the best way to make sure that people learn is to not only give them the rules but give them a lot of questions, so they can practice using those rules until they are almost instinctual (i.e., they don’t even have to think before using them). This is especially important when you consider the fact that dealing with negative numbers is something that occurs over and over and over again, and being unable to handle them confidently will only make things harder than they need to be.
The second example that I’d like to bring up is formal writing in English.
As someone who has acquired a PhD, I am perhaps more familiar with formal writing than I would like to be (nothing kills the soul faster than overuse of formal, academic language). I have also had the pleasure of teaching students at a university level. In my experience, the overwhelming majority of university students arrive at university with very little idea of how to write formally in English (e.g., essays, reports, etc.). Indeed, one of the things we would do for students was to hold tutorials giving them a crash course in how to write properly.
But where does this begin? Obviously, bemoaning it at a university level is soothing, but it hardly addresses the problem. The more I deal with high school students, the more certain I become that the problem begins there. Simply put, high school students are expected to do things like discuss the themes and techniques employed in film, poetry, prose, and so on – but without receiving much instruction at all about how to actually do that.
Let me make it clear that I am not heaping the blame on teachers. Two people in my family are teachers (albeit primary/elementary), but I know plenty of teachers. Overwhelmingly, they have noticed the same things as me, and they have come to many of the same conclusions. Alas, they are increasingly being buried under red tape, administrative minutiae, and syllabi that have obviously been written by people who have either never set foot in a classroom or last did so in the age of the dinosaurs.
In any case, let me return to the topic at hand. The ability to identify themes and the techniques used to convey them is not necessarily related to the ability to explain those ideas in prose. Specifically, formal writing demands a certain rigour of thought and a certain style, and simply knowing what you want to write about is not enough.
Consider the basic structure of an essay. You might have an introduction, the body of the essay, and then the conclusion. I am always horrified by how few students realise that simply dividing the essay into thirds is not the correct way to go about it. The introduction and conclusion are not the same length as the body of the essay. If they are, then something has gone seriously wrong.
One of the children I am helping had an assignment in which they had to write an essay about a particular topic. They had discussed it with their friends, and they had, together, come to the conclusion that the above strategy was sound. That is, they thought it would be fine to have one third of the essay be the introduction, another third be the body, and the final third be the conclusion.
This is madness, and the fact that this wasn’t addressed at some point worries me. What worries me even more is that the students aren’t even given one of those handouts where they roughly outline the structure of an essay and what each part should do. Admittedly, these handouts are only rough guides, but even so, this is probably the first real essay that this student has had to write in high school. I would rather they receive too much guidance at this point than too little since it can be very hard to fix bad habits.
Looking at the work of the high school students I know, what strikes me is the tendency of the syllabus to focus on themes and techniques, which is all well and good, but the basic purpose of English, to my mind, is to teach students how to communicate using the written word. It might very well be fantastic to be able to know what the themes of a poem are, but if you can’t explain any of that in coherent fashion, then I would argue much of the potential value is lost.
What I would prefer to see is a focus on the basics of communication. Teach students how to write an essay (and other forms of writing, e.g., reports, reviews, etc.) and teach it to them early. Focus on providing the students with a scaffold for formal writing. That is, give them the basic structure of the different forms of writing and teach them how to fill out that structure.
In the case of an essay this would involve not only teaching them the basic structure of an essay (introduction, body, and conclusion) but also how these parts fit together.
For example, the introduction must provide the basic context of the topic (i.e., what you’re talking about and why it matters) as well as provide some idea of the direction the essay will take (e.g., what thesis you will be putting forward/what ideas you will be exploring). From there, the body of the essay discusses the points put forward in the introduction, expanding on them and addressing their relevance to the topic while supporting and advancing your thesis. Furthermore, each paragraph of the body should flow logically into the next, ideally in a manner that steadily builds a foundation for the soundness of your thesis. The conclusion, then, should summarise the main ideas and round off the essay, stating your conclusion while perhaps pointing to future avenues of inquiry.
Critically, I believe these things should be taught in context. That is, students should be given copies of good, mediocre, and bad essays (or other forms of formal writing) and taught what makes each example good, mediocre, or bad. I believe that seeing examples and learning what makes them tick, so to speak, would help so many students develop a stronger grasp of the intricacies of formal writing. Teach them how to take an essay apart, so they can build one of their own.
This would, of course, necessitate taking time away from the study of set texts, but I think this would be time well spent. Once someone knows how to write a good essay, they can use that skill over and over and over again in the years to come. In contrast, learning the details of a particular text will not help someone as much since they will eventually have to move on to another text.
In summary, the basics matter. A strong foundation will not only last for years but also serve a student well across a variety of areas. Knowing how to properly handle negative numbers will make not only high school math but also university math far easier. Knowing how to write a good essay will help not just for the study of one text but also in the study of other texts and even in other subjects (e.g., the social sciences).
If you want to read more about my thoughts on writing, you can find those here.
I also write original fiction, which you can find here.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided – A review and analysis
Foreword
Before beginning this review, note that the language used herein is based on the requirements of an assignment, hence the lack of first-person perspective and personality. The reader should also understand that reviews are always subjective, based as they are on the reviewers experience within the content, prior experiences, predispositions and prejudices. Accordingly, this review is based on the authors experience with the game, albeit an incomplete play-through, and the twenty-eight-or-so hours of play that included. The review will give an overview of the game and define it, breakdown the four core categories to any game: graphics, sound, story and gameplay; and conclude with a summation of the authors opinions.
Spoiler Alert! While the author tries to keep plot-ruining spoilers out of the review it would be impossible to do a proper review or discuss certain aspects of the game without citing specific details from the content of the game. Therefore, if you do not want spoilers skip the story section. You have been warned, continue at your own discretion!
The Overview
The game is a modernized, pocket-world, mostly-immersive sim. This a mouthful of a statement and unless one is familiar with the terms, requires a bit of defining. Modernized is the easiest to define; all that is meant by it is that a new engine was developed to best utilize “modern” technology for rendering, AI and physics. The Dawn Engine was developed in 2014 by Eidos-Montreal, specifically for use in Deus-Ex (Eidos-Montreal, 2014).
Pocket-world is where definitions start to get tricky, open-world games are games that utilize large open spaces, which are far more often than not, seamless. Games that come to mind that fit this genre are Rockstar Game’s “Grand Theft Auto” series which boasts small representations of cities, and CD Projekt RED’s “The Witcher 3”, which features an entire kingdom. In Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (henceforth: DEMD), is set in a miniaturized Prague. The equivalent to maybe a few city blocks worth of real-estate broken into two separate zones which must be loaded individually, and a couple other separate story mission areas (also separate loads), hence the term pocket.
Mostly-immersive sim, refers to a design philosophy described best by Mark Brown on Immersive Sims. In which he defines an immersive sim as containing: agency, systems, emergence, consistency and reactivity (Brown, 2016). Now let us briefly define each of these based on Mark’s video.
·         Agency is player freedom. The player gets an objective to complete and has the freedom and means, to go about it in multiple ways based on their own personal play-style preference.
·         Systems are the rules the game follows, which are learnable and repeated, based on AI and physics.
·         Emergent gameplay is what happens when the player utilizes or exploits game systems to complete their objectives, sometimes in ways completely unforeseen by the developers.
·         Consistency means the developers have intentionally tried to avoid scripted events and one-time events or boxing the player into doing one thing, or one thing after another.
·         Reactivity is the games characters interactions reflecting player actions and decisions.
The descriptor “mostly” is used here because there are a few things about the gameplay make it unqualified to be called a completely immersive sim. Mainly that time is frozen until certain objectives are met and unlike other games on the market the NPC’s are not completely reactive to the player’s actions. As an example: pointing guns at civilians has no real consequences, except that they may not talk to you until you put the gun away; and rough or rude interactions are practically none existent (running into them/dropping objects on them). So, while the game falls a little short on reactivity, it measures up to the overall philosophy quite nicely.
Graphics
In a word, beautiful. The game takes full advantage of most modern technologies and in an optimized manner. Specifications for the computer utilized in the play-through are moderate. For those with a knowledge of hardware: a first generation i7 processor, with equally aged motherboard and RAM (12GB), a standard SATA hard drive, and an NVidia GTX 970 graphics card. The lowest framerates experienced were in the thirties, with the majority of the outdoor scenes playing in the mid-forties and fifties. Indoors and enclosed areas typically were above sixty FPS.
Only two graphical artifacts were experienced in the twenty eight hours of play. One being a characters hairline not meeting up with the face, creating a see-through area in her skull. And the other being an odd tessellation-sync issue between a table and the objects on it, causing a see-through line pattern in the objects.
The game characters also manage to avoid the uncanny valley effect, which is described as the relation of an object (or in this case, characters) human likeness and our affinity towards it (Masahiro, 2012). Though this may be different per-player, and on a character to character basis. This may be due to the games stylization, the player’s perception of the characters being less than human or the game purposely not striving for human perfection in facial movements; or perhaps some combination of the afore-mentioned.
Sound
Much of a games mood can be felt through its sounds and music. Every area in the game has different-ish music, all of it built around the areas theme, but centralizing around the games overarching mood; which is dark. As an example, the red-light district has a lot of club and electronic music, both in what is coming from said establishments as well as the games ambient music. While the music is high quality and well themed, it felt underwhelming in certain circumstances and areas, and overpowering in others it probably should not have. Overall the soundtrack gives a cinematic feel to the game.
There is not a lot to say about the sound effects other than they are well done. With the exception of character speech. A lot of the game takes place in a crowded, foreign city. All these citizens talk, adding their ambient conversation to the atmosphere. That being said the majority of the general public is Czech and speak their language, broken English or heavily accented English; with the exception of your co-workers. The use of foreign language in most of these ambient conversations is a brilliant way to keep the average player from feeling as if they are rehearing the same conversations over and over; as well as keeping the theme of the game unified and create resonance (Schell, 2015).
Story (SPOILERS)
There is far too much involved to delve into all the details of the game’s story, but here is the general outline up to the point of writing this review. The player controls Adam Jensen, a secret, special ops, anti-terrorism unit of Inter-pol based in Prague, a hot-seat of “natural” vs “augmented” tensions. During the tutorial phase of the game, the player provides backup to an undercover agent during an operation which is attacked by an unknown group of trained, heavily armed and augmented people. What follows is a series of missions that uncovers a conspiracy, traitors in your midst, being a double agent, the Illuminati (literally) and world control. All through the main story the theme of “natural vs augmented” is a shallow comparison to real-world racism.
What is really impressive is the stories told through the side missions, which build character depth and flesh-out back story. Even more impressive are the untold stories. Those told through the level design with minimal use of verbal or written narrative. Each of these “untold” stories is a macrocosm of their respective side story or the state of the world, and in-turn support the overarching theme and story of the game; again, unified theme theory (Schell, 2015).
While the main story has order, and cannot be played out of sequence, the side missions can be completed at the player’s discretion and are meant to fill in gaps and build the characters and their relationships. Conversely, the “untold” stories one finds are never assigned as missions, a few of them are hinted at as points of interest but are never required.
Gameplay
There are two categories to gameplay and at least two styles for each of those categories. The first category is progression, which we will define as: the rate at which the player carries the main story forward. The second is conflict resolution, aka: combat. There are two styles of progression: quick and explorative. The quick route will take the player along the main story and ignore side missions and extra story, completing the game in a short time. Explorative play on the other hand will take the player through the games many vents and through the many houses and buildings open to the player, revealing those “untold” stories and the games many secrets and Easter-eggs.
Combat has three routes available and can be mixed and matched as the player sees fit. The lethal route: the player makes use of their arsenal of firearms, grenades, mines and skills to dispatch the opposing forces. The pacifist route: the player has a pistol with stun ammo, a rifle with sleep darts, a few incapacitating grenades and mines, and abilities. Stealth: the player may attempt to avoid detection. Evade and avoid: the player may opt to avoid the majority of opposing forces entirely.
The world as a puzzle-platformer. Every area is designed in such a way that there is never one way to any objective. There are ledges and pipes, vents and breakable walls, unlockable doors, hacking, passwords and a number of skills that facilitate most playstyles. Completing missions can be as easy as running and gunning, or as complex as a covert operation. This game’s mechanics complements Schell’s ten principles for puzzle creation perfectly (Schell, 2015).
The Good and The Bad
While the author’s opinion on the game is based on an, as of this writing, incomplete play through of the game, it is none-the-less positive. The gameplay and story are immersive and engaging, there is a mountain of content to explore and challenges a-plenty to find and overcome, in an only you should determine what style of play.
The few graphical artifacts the author ran into were not a detractor, and even the bug he encountered that crashed the game multiple times will not dissuade the continuation and completion of the game. The one major drawback to the game is loading times. Each time the player loads into the game or a new pocket there was a minimum of a two and a half minute load time. There are several missions that take the player between the two pockets of the city multiple times each, all that loading time adds up. Of the total twenty eight hours of play the author experienced, an hour of that may have been in transit loading times.
This review was written based on a play-through done in an exploratory, passive/stealth style. Based on the opinions mentioned above the game ranks at a solid 9/10. The lost point is due to the excessive load times.
