The fundamental flaw with Endeavor's redemption/repentance arc (pt1)

I’ve seen quite a bit of discussion about this- on both sides- and wanted to put in my own perspective about why I still don't buy Endeavor's repentance despite his desire to do better and make up for what he’s done

My main issue with his arc is that it comes about due to circumstances that inherently cheapen it- let me explain:

Endeavor’s arc of repentance begins after All Might’s fall in Kamino. Endeavor sees All Might brought low, and then removed from the running for number one entirely, and soon after seems to have experienced a change of heart. He questions AM at the provisional licensing remedial training about what it means to be a hero, and later expresses to Shouto that he wants to try to become a better father and a better hero (which is another issue, to be addressed in pt2 of this post)

Okay, so this all seems well and good right? Sure, it took 25 years for him to get here, but at least he’s getting somewhere, right? Well, not really. My issue is that it took AM’s retirement for Endeavor to decide to change

Throughout the 25 years that he went through the process of buying a wife in an outlawed quirk marriage, essentially breeding her for children, and abusing said children, he didn’t once take a moment to reflect on his actions and realize how deranged they were, nope, instead he focused single-mindedly on his ultimate goal, and forged on ahead through events that could have been catalysts for him to realize he needed to change.

He didn’t reflect when Touya burned himself, or when the doctor told him he needed to quit with his quest (with good reason)

He didn’t quit the first time he hit his wife

Or when he “trained” Shouto to the point of making him vomit

Or when his child “died” as a result of his father’s neglect and abuse

Or when his wife caused serious harm to his child as a result of his abuse of her, and had to be institutionalized

All of these moments were prime opportunities for him to come to his senses and stop what he was doing, and all of them were summarily dismissed in pursuit of his goal.

Prior to AM’s fall, we see Endeavor at the sports festival, and it’s clear he’s just as abusive as ever, with his desire to beat AM just as strong as it had been for years at that point

It was only when AM retired that Endeavor changed, and the reason for that is that Endeavor’s goal was no longer something that could be achieved. AM is no longer available as an obstacle to be overcome, and Endeavor has achieved the number 1 position, effectively rendering his entire crusade up to this point moot.

This is the problem- Endeavor didn’t change bc he realized what he was doing was wrong through empathizing with his family members, he changed bc his goal was no longer achievable. So if AM hadn’t retired, would he still be going full steam ahead with this? Would he have changed at all? We can’t know for sure, but I’m willing to bet that he wouldn’t have, and that’s why his redemption arc means very little to me- it’s too little, too late, and for all the wrong reasons

lucas koh, 27, oxford, physiotherapist

lucas was drop dead gorgeous, and since the first time i saw him, it was over for me. his route was filled with so much thrill, emotion and intensity, i couldn’t skip on writing for him.

from villa injustices we should’ve get some apologies for, to the life he has outside of the show, i wanted to bring a full story for him. 

and his characters is just so goddamn full of surprises all the time! he can be a posh boy, but still care about the important things like love, friendship, values that most of the boys and girls don’t even talk about.

problematic? yes. but that’s a major factor that makes him so interesting and intriguing, his arc and motivations change throughout the game, and that just goes to show how real and amazing he is! (yes, i’m a simp. nothing to do here!)

‘if it wasn’t for you’ villa and pos-villa lucas’ perspectives, and yours, involving some of the most important happenings after ‘stick or switch’. it was important for the context to include these moments. after you win the first prize and leave the show,  the decision has been made. you’ll move in together, in his apartment. lucas will have several facets, and this story will explore his relationship with his parents, his past in uni, his life with you as a couple, and more.

title: lucas’ tale has had many titles already, and none of them really clicked! “posh”, “the right choice”, “power over me” and now this one, that i really think it will fit perfectly. it comes from a very specific passage in one of the chapters, but i can’t spoil it.

Okay so pt2 of this, (pt 3 here and then here’s pt 4) didn’t want to reblog since it was already getting too long. But here goes thoughts on this AU for the rest of s2:

So yeah, imagine Buck and Eddie having all that history going into s2. Imagine Buck still being struck dumb when he sees Eddie changing at the station that first day, completely speechless when his brain finally connects face to memory. Imagine Eddie having so much turmoil over the feelings that spark up at seeing his old teammate again, having Buckley back at his side. It makes Eddie’s transition to the team go a lot smoother in the long run, although there’s still a bit of a rough patch that first shift.

(So Eddie is a still little peeved when he recognizes Buckley, and he can’t keep the bitterness out of his voice when he makes a quip about not abandoning this team, Buckley immediately shutting down at the disapproval and getting defensive. But then there’s the call with the ambulance, and Eddie is thrown back in the field with Buckley by his side on one of those rare good days of his, and Eddie is sure of the man flanking him when they’re climbing into the ambulance together. They manage to handle the explosive and no one dies, and at the end when Eddie is smiling too bright and clapping a shoulder saying, “You can still have my back any day, Buckley,” and too-blue eyes shine back with, “Buck. Call me Buck. And you—you can have mine too” and a grin that has Buckley’s—Buck, Buck, Buck’s—lips splitting wide.)

Imagine how differently Buck would grow as a character. He learned his lesson about where he belongs a little too late in this AU, and imagine the potential for how much Buck would mourn every life he wasn’t able to save when he was active. Imagine how heavy it laid on his shoulders every time he had to pull the trigger, imagine how deeply he must have been hiding from his father’s disappointment in him if he let himself get pulled so far off from his own moral track to make it as far as he did while on active duty.

Buck still has a streak of promiscuity after he gets discharged, because Eddie’s words may have been enough to subdue him in their company but not where all those rules couldn’t touch him anymore. I sincerely think Buck still needs to have his Abby arc, it’s such a good arc for him imo even though I wish there was more closure at the end. So when Eddie shows up and tumbles back into his life, Buck is a little more willing to move on out of Abby’s apartment at a more reasonable pace.

He struggles a little less with coping over being ghosted, or rather realizing he’s the ghost or whatever, because he sees a potential place for him to belong and jumps at it. (Which would still need to be addressed eventually, this perpetual need of Buck’s to be useful to prove his own worth to himself and everyone, constantly.) Ohhh and imagine how much more the Earthquake episode would hit with Buck’s absolute resolution to get Eddie home to not just a picture of a little boy, but full-fleshed Christopher who Buck has been a fan of ever since he talked Eddie down into just accepting that little boy into his life and letting that be enough, even when Christopher was only a faceless name through stories in the desert. Imagine how much more would be behind that already relieved longing Buck showed in the scene where Eddie holds Chris at the school.

And it just makes sense, really—Buck reassures himself repeatedly—that Buck moves in with Eddie and Chris after things settle back down. At this point Eddie has made it clear how much he’s struggling with the childcare issues with being a single dad and Buck finds himself hiding from lonely nights by hanging out with his two favorite Diaz’s more often than not these last few months. When some of the rest of the team express concern—mostly through jokes, mind you, like comments about “lovebirds moving too fast” and other inane shit like that—over it, Buck’s ready with a stupid, rehearsed presentation to Eddie about why being roommates would be beneficial to “all parties involved, c’mon Eddie it’s not ‘just the two of us, you idiot’ Chris is a party too!”, with a large portion of it all dedicated to how Buck would be useful in sharing household duties and can help watch Christopher on Eddie’s work days if they’re not on shift together.

Already Eddie is feeling pretty persuaded but then Buck ends this whole spiel with a check towards his phone and a really vague mention of a friend coming over to meet them, and right on time the doorbell rings and in walks the biggest personality Eddie never knew he needed in his life. Carla is fantastic off the bat, and when Buck mentions near the end that Carla would help him no matter what he decided regarding the roommate situation, of course, Eddie is blinking so dumbly at Buck he nearly has to shake himself back to normal.

Because imagine how different it’s been for Eddie. Getting home to his parents already defensive on him getting to parent his own child, how hard he tries to stay with them as long as possible because everyone says that’s what best for Christopher after being abandoned by both parents, can’t you see he needs the stability only we can provide him? Until one day he sees an opportunity to start fresh and he grabs at it with flailing fingers, and Christopher is the only light in this dark as shit tunnel they seem to be stuck in.

But then in comes Buck, and Eddie learns a good lesson about letting people back into his life. Imagine how much relief there must have been the moment Eddie realizes an old partner was going to be by his side in this terrifying transition in Eddie’s life, not only at work but also taking some of the burden of parenthood off Eddie’s shoulders like it weighs nothing at all. Imagine how much Eddie needed that kind of stability around this time.

So imagine Eddie calling the whole presentation dumb after Carla leaves but rolling his eyes with a smile and Buck knows he got em, and just grins and asks too brightly, “yeah??” and Eddie can’t help but smile and tell him there’s no one else he’d rather be roommates with too much affection to be strictly teasing. And from the warmth in Buck’s eyes he can read that affection with ease, but he doesn’t say anything about it. He just smiles and starts planning the move excitedly.

Imagine s2 progressing the same, except now Buck and Eddie are 10x more comfortable with each other and god. Can you imagine the room for angst and emotional exploration with Shannon coming back into Eddie’s life with Buck already so ingrained in it? How Eddie would be torn towards wanting to try and fit back into the picture of what a happy family and marriage had always looked to him, but everything aching in him to lean towards Buck and the beginnings of their little sketched out family with Chris.

Imagine Buck trying to distance himself out of respect for Eddie and his marriage because he in no way wants to come in between Eddie and anything that would make him and Christopher happy; he’s firmly resolved if that means Shannon back in their lives, then so be it. But Eddie surprises him with the decision to limit contact with his wife—tells her that she can be part of Christopher’s life once she’s proven she can be trusted not to disappear, but that Eddie didn’t want anything beyond what’s necessary.

(Imagine Christopher getting to keep his mom and get his Buck too, because hey, we don’t have to kill off women to give men more backstory in this AU.)

Imagine Buck taking this as a step toward something he realizes he’s craving from Eddie: more. Imagine the soft touches and questioning looks and the longing that’s possible with all the domestic scenes after this. Imagine the fire fam getting absolutely insufferable with comments. But then there’s everything with Maddie and there’s not much time to consider anything beyond that. And then—then there’s the Accident and we go into s3, which I also have some Thoughts on.

The Book of Parental issues or how each characters legacy influences their live(pt2)

As I mentioned in the first post, Maria and Joaquin didn’t have enough screen time to fully reveal their relationships with parental figures,and this is partly true, but we also should  take into account Jorge Gutierrezs plans on releasing the second and possibly third part of the Book of Life, each will focus on one of the tres lenches left.With this in mind, let's summarize what we know about Joaquim, his father and how  the absence of the latter affected soldiers worldview.

As we all know,Captain Mondragon was killed during the fight with Chakal,leaving Joaquin without a father.In the Fandom Wiki it was mentioned that kid has a living mother and sister,but they both left San Angel after the death of Joaquim Snr.In the end,for most of his early childhood,Joaquin has no parents to guide him, having only a statue and stories about his father's heroic deeds that inspire the little one,who wants to become like a person he never knew .Which is the reason he so eagerly took the Medal of Everlasting Life from Xibalba in disguise: the promise of incredible strength and indestructibility allows the boy to become like his father, the man(or the statue) he always looked up to.

After showing his skills thanks to the Medal,Joaquin is taken under the wing of General Posada, who in the eyes of the child becomes something like a mentor, and the General in turn, and I quote, gets "the son he never had" (ouch for Maria).However we,as an audience,can easily pick up that Posada wasn’t training Joaquin out of kindness, but because the boy was capable of military art. Not once did the General mention the qualities of the young man's character, only that he is "a brave and strong warrior who will be a suitable husband for Maria". This is not a warm relationship based on love, but the use of Joaquin for the General's own purposes - the protection of the city and the marriage of his daughter.In addition to military training and promotion of rank,Joaquin also adopted General's views on women - yes, he says it not out of hatred, but this clearly shows his lack of awareness to the things he says regarding his childhood friend.

Later on, after defeating Chakal and losing his own eye, Joaquin tells Manolo that it's time for both of them to step out of their parents' shadows, which can be interpreted as an end to the soldier's attempts to be like the father he never knew, and starting on a journey to find himself. Also, I hope that this is how he gives up the role, in which he was staged by General Posada.

So what we have with Joaquin is an unfinished arc about abandoning attempts to be someone else in order to fit into society and the beginning of finding oneself.And I really hope that in a sequel this theme would be playing a major role in this characters journey.Wait for part 3!

The Book of Parental issues or how each characters legacy influences their live(pt 1)

Yes,it’s a psychoanalysis of cartoon  characters from 2014 film,but please bear with me. It is no secret to all of us that although this film puts it on the background, the topic of parenthood plays one of the key roles to the main characters - Manolo, Joaquim and even Maria. Let's consider how and why this topic is so important and how (in my humble opinion) it could be presented better in the case of certain characters (cough-cough-Maria-cough-cough).This one would be divided into 3 parts, each about one of the tres leches.

So let’s start with easiest one:Manolo.Through all the movie we see Carlos Sanchez(the father) trying to instill in his only son a love of bullfighting, something that all his ancestors did and is the pride of this family. But Manolo, despite his great talent for it, realizes that killing for fun is a bad thing, and that he wants to become a guitarist instead. Over the years, Manolo increasingly rebels against this idea(telling his dad that it’s his dream to be matador,not Manolo’s)but Carlos's words about his mother's disappointment (even though, as we later learn, she was against such a career for her son) and betrayal of his own family keep him in place. So what we can see is a centuries-old tradition that all Sanchez's ancestors performed, and which Manolo must fulfill, otherwise he won’t have the right to be considered as a part of this family.

Later on,he ultimately decides not to kill a bull during a corrida, stating that he does not want to participate in this action despite the pressure from the family. In response to this, the main character is thrown a guitar at him (most likely by Carlos), is called a disappointment to the family and shouldn't think of himself as Sanchez.We see that in case of an open rejection of tradition, regardless of how bloody it is, it is considered an insult to the family, for which one must be punished. This unhealthy ideology about continuing the matador career despite one's own desire is present in more than one generation, as shown with his two-swords-instead-of-limbs-predecessor Jorge Sanchez (his desire to be an opera singer was overshadowed by the need to continue bullfighting ).

During the final act,when Manolo makes peace with the souls of killed bulls trough the song,he ultimately shows his family,and especially Carlos,that what they thought was his weakness is actually his strength,and that is showing kindness and being true to yourself.Seing this,his father apologizes for pressuring him into something he didn’t want to,and realizes that the title of Sanchez shouldn’t be earned.

So in the end we got full-closed arc about breaking the toxic traditions and carving your own path.Which is sweet,but Maria and Joaquin didn’t have enough screen time to do the same.
