DUE NORTH: VIGNETTES / 10
A cozy urban fantasy about two best friends who move to the pocket of eccentricity and magic that is Due North
Bella would have perhaps been less focused on teasing Berto if they had sat inside. For all the attention they spent on the bookshop itself, they had completely neglected the patrons, a mere glance at whom would have proved to be a rather useful introduction for the oncoming evening.
Dotted across the tables and mingling amongst the books were people of all sorts. Faries, harpies, and other small, winged creatures were either sat at tiny tables hanging from the ceiling, enjoying appropriately sized coffees and breads, or zipped around through the shop, their own light mixing comfortably with Delucaâsâ ambiance.
At a table on the ground, sat an elf and a dwarf dressed for two completely different occasions. The elf was clad in colourless clothes, black from the top to bottom, save for a red and white striped scarf. The dwarf, on the other hand, looked like he would be right at home amongst the stars of Milanâs fashion week (if, you know, they allowed people standing at half the average human height). A white shirt was tucked into burgundy trousers with a chequered blue jacket buttoned up on top. He completed the ensemble with a small yellow scarf tied around his neck, half tucked into his shirt, half falling out gracefully on top of it. Their coffees had gotten cold and were instead signing rapidly at each other and pointing to places on maps strewn across the table, apparently amid a high-stakes discussion.
Another was occupied by a donsy of gnomes, chattering across enough servings of biscuits and cups of tea to go around two per gnome and still have more to spare. They were a little lounder than Alia would have liked for a bookshop crowd, but they ate a lot and tipped heartily so she didnât mind them all too much.
Cats floated around the books section of the store, merrily browsing Aliaâs collection. Only their heads were visible at any one point, the rest of their limbs operating invisibly, and even they puffed in and out of visibility. Contrary to what one would have thought, the cats had exemplary hygiene standards: these cats didnât shed nor drool and if they happened to somehow make a mess of things, they could magic it away along with themselves. Of course, their little disappearing act gave their kind the ability to be very, very good thieves (Alia had even met a few, thankfully not at her own place though) but the clowder that frequented Delucaâs spent a small fortune every month on books and then spent hours talking to her about them â they were her favourite customers.
Berto and Bella would have met all these people and more, if only they had sat inside, and would maybe even have been advised not to cross a minotaurâs territory, even by accident. Instead, all they saw were the fish, scales gleaming in the sun as they dipped in and out of the water, swimming merrily along the canal.

Watching Friday the 13th for the first time and Iâm really loving how the use of POV shots in the first act of the movie sets up a lot more suspenseful shots later in the film by making the audience question whether the shot on screen is or isnt POV at the moment
#this is usually when its handheld dollying toward a character from a halfshot to a close up and ESPECIALLY when the character is not facing#the camera#fucking excellent directorial and cinematographical work#i can see why this one is such a classic#also love the score#the little âtchtch kh-khhâ sound that repeats a lot when it gets scary/after a murder#reminds me of a lot of things but particularly of clicking and scraping metal (like a knife)#but also like crickets#cause yknow#summercamp#this is really such a good movie#and im such a sucker for the old film look

saw the nickel boys the other night and i thought the directing style was so visually cool and i understood why it was used, but it was something that worked better for me in theory than in practice, which was disappointing
#Iâve sat with this movie a few days now and i thought a lot about it was really well done#and obviously devastating considering the subject matter#but i feel like the directorial choices worked to distance myself from the characters more than connect me to them#which stinks because i want to encourage bold directing and cinematography like this#but something didnât click for me

DUE NORTH: VIGNETTES / 9
A cozy urban fantasy about two best friends who move to the pocket of eccentricity and magic that is Due North
Producing a knife from one of her jacket pockets, Alecia made a small, sharp cut in the packaging of one of the two, scooping up the pills before they could hit the ground. She crushed the edge of one of them and sucked on the produced powder, testing its strength and pocketing the rest.
âWhat? Still donât think Iâm good for it?â
âI donât think youâre smart enough for it, J. Twice now youâve been duped into bringing me candy. Not even the good kind. Ended up giving it away with meals at the diner both times.â
âHey, twice in â shit, how long has it been? Whatever. Twice in however many years is still pretty damn good!â he protested.
âYeah, well, Iâd just like to make sure itâs not thrice. But yeah, youâre good for it this time.â She reached into another pocket and produced a wad of cash. Jasper took it with an exaggerated bow, Aleciaâs response to which was to roll her eyes, and unloaded the two packages before closing the trunk and walking back to the driverâs seat.
âFix that headlight, J,â Alecia called out. âCanât count on me for light on your other routes.â
âBye Alecia!â came the singsong reply as he sped off into the night.
ââ§â
Berto, true to himself woke up well after noon. Bella, most untrue to herself, woke up even after him, having chosen to finish moving in after dinner the previous night. After a decidedly most undignified wake up, as Bella had so elegantly put it, Berto dragged the pair of them to a bookshop simply named Delucaâs. He raved about it the entire way there, claiming it was half the reason he moved to Due North at all.
Large glass double doors stood front and centre, opposite the canal that ran through the town. Small tables lined the two storefronts it occupied, its wonderfully comfortable light spilling out onto the pavement in front. Postcards hung from near invisible strings, each one unlike its neighbours, boasting fantastical narratives and landscapes dipping in and out of reality.
Overlapping scents floated around inside, books, new and old, mingling lively with fresh-baked cakes and pastries; the quietest music, soft around the edges, piggybacked on the aromas. Rows of books lined the front half of the store, some simply stacked on shelfs, some on painted carousels, others on platters hanging from the ceiling, and still other, ludicrously expensive ones, behind glass cases. The latter half boasted the most impressive patisserie either one of Berto or Bella had seen (âAnd I did a year in Paris!â Bella remarked). Lines of pastries, macaroons, puffs, breads, doughnuts, waffles, and more streaked down the enormous glass casing, leaving the two of them instantly famished, despite having eaten only half an hour ago.
Alia Deluca herself manned the counter, introducing herself proudly. It wasnât arrogant pride, Berto noted silently, even though, looking around, she had every right to be. Rather, it was indulgent and her smile warm and welcoming, inviting you to enjoy with her.
Bella ordered a black coffee with a plain muffin and Berto, with a little more than a little difficulty, managed to ask for a strawberry tart and an iced coffee. Bella thought she glimpsed something vaguely bear-like in the kitchen while placing her order, but then kicked herself for making fun of someoneâs body.
âSuch a vanilla order,â Berto chided once they were seated. The sun was shining, a light breeze was blowing, and the riverbank glittered with fish merrily making their way about, so they took a table outside.
âWhat? Afraid I embarrassed you in front of your new little friend?â
âWhat?â Berto cried incredulously.
âOh please, you could barely make it to the end of that order!â
âIâm sure I have no idea what youâre talking about,â he firmly negated, smiling slightly nonetheless.
Bella would have perhaps been less focused on teasing Berto if they had sat inside. For all the attention they spent on the bookshop itself, they had completely neglected the patrons, a mere glance at whom would have proved to be a rather useful introduction for the oncoming evening.

how to build a digital music collection and stuff
spotify sucks aaaass. so start downloading shit!!
file format glossary
.wav is highest quality and biggest
.mp3 is very small, but uses lossy compression which means it's lower quality
.flac is smaller than .wav, but uses lossless compression so it's high quality
.m4a is an audio file format that apple uses. that's all i really know
downloading the music
doubledouble.top is a life saver. you can download from a variety of services including but not limited to apple music, spotify, soundcloud, tidal, deezer, etc.
i'd recommend ripping your music from tidal or apple music since they're the best quality (i think apple music gives you lossless audio anyway. .m4a can be both lossy and lossless, but from the text on doubledouble i assume they're ripping HQ files off apple music)
i also love love love cobalt.tools for ripping audio/video from youtube (they support a lot of other platforms too!)
of course, many artists have their music on bandcamp â purchase or download directly from them if you can. bandcamp offers a variety of file formats for download
file conversion
if you're downloading from apple music with doubledouble, it spits out an .m4a file.
.m4a is ok for some people but if you prefer .flac, you may wanna convert it. ffmpeg is a CLI (terminal) tool to help with media conversion
if you're on linux or macOS, you can use parameter expansion to batch convert all files in a folder. put the files in one place first, then with your terminal, cd into the directory and run:
for i in *.m4a; do ffmpeg -i "$i" "${i%.*}.flac"; done
this converts from .m4a to .flac â change the file extensions if needed.
soulseek
another way to get music is through soulseek. soulseek is a peer-to-peer file sharing network which is mainly used for music. nicotine+ is a pretty intuitive (and open-source) client if you don't like the official one.
you can probably find a better tutorial on soulseek somewhere else. just wanted to make this option known
it's bad etiquette to download from people without sharing files of your own, so make sure you've got something shared. also try to avoid queuing up more than 1-2 albums from one person in a row
tagging & organizing your music
tagging: adding metadata to a music file (eg. song name, artist name, album) that music players can recognize and display
if you've ripped music from a streaming platform, chances are it's already tagged. i've gotten files with slightly incorrect tags from doubledouble though, so if you care about that then you might wanna look into it
i use musicbrainz picard for my tagging. they've got pretty extensive documentation, which will probably be more useful than me
basically, you can look up album data from an online database into the program, and then match each track with its file. the program will tag each file correctly for you (there's also options for renaming the file according to a certain structure if you're into that!)
there's also beets, which is a CLI tool for... a lot of music collection management stuff. i haven't really used it myself, but if you feel up to it then they've got extensive documentation too. for most people, though, it's not really a necessity
how you wanna organize your music is completely up to you. my preferred filestructure is:
artist > album > track # track
using a music player
the options for this are pretty expansive. commonly used players i see include VLC, foobar2000, clementine (or a fork of it called strawberry), and cmus (for the terminal)
you can also totally use iTunes or something. i don't know what audio players other systems come with
i personally use dopamine. it's a little bit slow, but it's got a nice UI and is themeable plus has last.fm support (!!!)
don't let the github page fool you, you don't have to build from source. you can find the releases here
click the "assets" dropdown on the most recent release, and download whichever one is compatible with your OS
syncing
if you're fine with your files just being on one device (perhaps your computer, but perhaps also an USB drive or an mp3 player), you don't have to do this
you can sync with something like google drive, but i hate google more than i hate spotify
you can get a free nextcloud account from one of their providers with 2GB of free storage. you can use webDAV to access your files from an app on your phone or other device (documents by readdle has webDAV support, which is what i use)
disroot and blahaj.land are a couple providers i know that offer other services as well as nextcloud (so you get more with your account), but accounts are manually approved. do give them a look though!!
if you're tech-savvy and have an unused machine lying around, look into self-hosting your own nextcloud, or better yet, your own media server. i've heard that navidrome is a pretty good audio server. i unfortunately don't have experience with self-hosting at the moment so i have like zero advice to give here. yunohost seems to be a really easy way to manage a server
afterword
i don't know if any of this is helpful, but i just wanted to consolidate my personal advice in one place. fuck big tech. own your media, they could take it away from you at any moment

âCDCR, probation. How may I help you?â you say to answer the phone.
With the receiver tucked between your ear and shoulder, you look at your current list of parolees. The spreadsheet shows three red lines, and you frown as you read the names.
âHi, Iâm calling about Dexter Wheeler,â the woman on the phone says. âI believe heâs one of your parolees.â
Sitting up straighter, you reply, âYes, maâam, he is.â
âWell, Iâm sorry to bother you and Iâm sure itâs nothing, but he hasnât been to work in three days. His conditions for employment allow him sick time and personal time, but he hasnât notified us, and he isnât answering the phone.â
âOkay, I am supposed to have a check-in with him tomorrow,â you read from your screen. âIâll look into this and let you know. Thank you for the call.â
âOf course. Is there anything else you need from me?â
âNothing specific, no. Is there-Â Did you notice any unusual behavior before his absence?â
âHe had been a bit distant,â she answers. âUnwilling to answer questions, easily agitated.â
âDid he make any threats or become overly belligerent?â
âNo, no, nothing like that. I just figured he was tired or maybe he wanted another job.â
âIâll certainly find out what has been going on with him.â
âThank you. Would you mind calling me back after you speak to him? I want to be sure heâs okay.â
âOf course. Iâll keep you updated. Thank you.â
You return the receiver to the phone cradle and navigate to Mr. Wheelerâs parole file. He hasnât checked in with you recently, and he hasnât filed any change of employment or violated any conditions of his parole in the past. Heâs never been overly kind, but he was trying to stay on the straight and narrow when you first met him. You think your parolees deserve a second chance, but they must be willing to do the work and prove that their second chance wonât be wasted.
With your phone on speaker, you call Mr. Wheeler. It rings repeatedly until an automated message alerts you that Dexterâs voicemail is full. Thatâs not a good sign.
You log out of your computer, gather your things, and tell your supervisor youâre doing a surprise visit. She encourages you to alert the police, and you nod before you leave the office. Thereâs no reason to think Mr. Wheeler will do anything rash, but it is still a good idea to have the police on standby.
âMy favorite podcast buddy!â Nell exclaims when she answers your call. âWhat can I do for you?â
âHey, Nell,â you reply, hitting your blinker. âIâm going to a paroleeâs house; he hasnât been at work for three days and he isnât answering my calls. Any chance you could put some officers on standby for me?â
âOf course. Whatâs the address?â
You recite it from memory, then thank Nell. With the promise of another true crime party, you end the call and approach Mr. Wheelerâs apartment complex. Itâs neither the safest nor the most dangerous in Los Angeles. You survey your immediate surroundings and exit the car to walk up the cracking concrete walkway.
The buzzer echoes in the dim hallway before you exit and look toward Mr. Wheelerâs balcony. One of his neighbors comes down the stairs and says your name.
âMrs. Ritter,â you reply with a smile. âHow are you? How are the kids?â
She sighs and clicks her tongue. âStill wilder than Tarzan.â
You laugh at her unusual analogy. She was one of your first parolees, and youâre proud of her progress in her personal and professional life.
âYou here for Mr. Wheeler?â she inquires after hearing youâre doing well. âHe has been holed up in that little pigsty since Friday night.â
âReally?â you ask. âDo you think heâs okay?â
âStill makinâ noise and it donât smell no worse, if thatâs what youâre askinâ. Come on in, honey.â
She opens the gate for you, wishes you luck, and walks to a freshly detailed but clearly used BMW. You wave to her, then walk up the steps to Mr. Wheelerâs apartment.
âMr. Wheeler!â you call after your knocks go unanswered. You say your name before you add, âI need to talk to you about your job.â
âI quit!â he yells from inside.
âIâm afraid thatâs not how it works, Dexter. Open the door and we can talk.â
âI open this door, and we wonât be talking!â
At that, you step away from the door and move back down the stucco hallway.
âLast chance to work with me,â you call.
He throws something against the door, which rattles on its hinges, and you pull your phone from your pocket. With a quick text to Nell, you have backup on the way. Hopefully, you can talk to Mr. Wheeler after the situation is de-escalated.
Less than five minutes later, a police car parks behind your sedan and two officers exit it. You meet them at the bottom of the stairs and open the gate to let them into the apartment complex.
âThank you so much for coming so quickly,â you say as you lead them up the stairs.
âNo problem,â Officer Bradford replies.
âIâm Lucy Chen,â Lucy introduces. âAnd this is Sergeant Tim Bradford.â
âNice to meet you,â you respond. âSo, my parolee, Dexter Wheeler, lives in apartment 34R. His employer called me earlier because he violated his agreement with them and stopped showing up three days ago. He wasnât answering my calls, so I came over and knocked on his door. He told me that if he opened the door, we wouldnât speak, and then threw something at the door.â
Tim nods, then looks around the small hallway. âAny of the neighbors say anything?â
âOne of the women who lives downstairs implied that his apartment is â for lack of a better word â disgusting, and that heâs been locked in it since he returned home from work four or so days ago.â
Timâs eyes remain locked on yours as you speak, and he mirrors your movements as you turn slightly to face Mr. Wheelerâs apartment.
âYou want us to take him into custody or just assist in getting inside?â Tim asks.
You sigh, then ask, âWhat do you recommend?â
âWe lock him up,â he answers. âHe threw something at you and threatened you.â
âBut not in that order,â you remind him with a small smile.
âThatâs worse, thatâs practically carrying out a threat against a government official.â
âYou know this guy,â Lucy points out. âWhat do you think would benefit him the most?â
âIf youâd be willing, I think one more chance might nudge him toward the right decision. If he decides to go the hard way, do whatever you need to do.â
Tim nods while Lucy agrees. He steps to the side and gestures for you to pass him, moving you farther from the door. While your back is turned, Lucy raises her brows and looks between you and Tim. He shakes his head once sternly, then leads Lucy to the door.
Tim knocks with the side of his closed fist and calls, âLAPD! Open the door, weâve got a few questions for you.â
Dexter doesnât answer, so Lucy tries, âWe just need to see that youâre okay, Mr. Wheeler.â
He still doesnât answer, so Tim wraps his fingers around the door handle. It turns about halfway, then stops.
âMr. Wheeler, we know youâre in there. Because youâre on parole, we can come inside without a warrant,â Tim explains. âLast chance to comply.â
âIâm not on parole!â he finally replies.
Tim raises his hands and drops them back to his sides as you deadpan, âOh, I mustâve been mistaken.â
âWeâre coming in, Mr. Wheeler,â Lucy says.
Something else hits the door with a thud, and Tim steps back before bringing his foot up. He kicks the door beside the lock and rushes inside when it splinters and swings open. Lucy lays her hand on her taser and follows Tim while you wait in the hall. A door opens farther down, and someone leans out to see the cause of the commotion.
âEverythingâs under control,â you assure them. âStay inside.â
Lucy returns to the door and steps out before taking a deep breath. âTimâs bringing him out.â
âIs it bad?â you ask.
Lucyâs eyes widen as she nods. You message your supervisor that Wheelerâs living conditions are unsuitable, and heâs being taken into police custody.
âWhat?â Dexter asks as Tim shoves him out of the door.
As he closes the door, you catch a whiff of the interior and fight the urge to cover your nose. Tim clears his throat as he looks at you.
âMr. Wheeler, why havenât you attended work this week?â you ask.
âI quit,â he tells you.
âWell, you have to tell me that. Itâs a violation of your parole.â
âYou donât need to know my every move. Iâm not a child.â
âIs that why your home is so dirty?â
âNone of your business.â
âActually, it is. You also failed to answer my calls earlier or open the door for me. Two more violations.â
âI was busy!â he defends.
He attempts to step toward you, but Tim keeps a tight grip on his handcuffs and yanks him back. Wheeler falls, grunting when he hits the concrete landing.
âHe was indeed busy,â Lucy tells you.
Your brows raise, and Tim rubs his jaw before he says, âThereâs a prostitute in there.â
âHe took a prostitute in there?!â you exclaim.
Youâre not surprised that he engaged in a criminal offense but by the prostituteâs willingness to go into such a residence. Lucy takes a deep breath before she knocks and reenters the apartment. Almost immediately, she exits again with a scantily-clad woman in handcuffs, closes the door, and exhales.
âWell, Mr. Wheeler,â you begin. âThe good news is, Iâm not your parole officer anymore.â
He smiles up at you, and Tim âaccidentallyâ knocks his boot against Dexterâs side.
âBad news,â Tim continues. âYouâre going back to jail for numerous parole violations and engaging in prostitution.â
âYouâre on parole?â the woman asks.
âThat is whatâs bothering you?â you and Tim ask simultaneously.
While she attempts to justify her actions, Tim radios for another unit to meet them at the apartment complex and transport the two arrested individuals before you.
As you end a call with your supervisor, Tim and Lucy talk to the officers escorting Mr. Wheeler and his female companion to lock up. You slide your phone into your pocket and wait for them to finish what theyâre doing.
After the door closes and the other officers drive toward the main road, Lucy turns to Tim with a wide smile.
âWhat?â he asks, waving you over.
âHello?â she exclaims. âChemistry what? You and the parole officer are like a perfect match!â
âChemistry?â Tim repeats just as you reach them. âWith my wife?â
âChemistry?â you say, just as Tim had. âTim Bradford, do you have a crush on me?â
Tim sighs as Lucy looks rapidly between you and Tim.
âCareful,â you warn, while Tim snaps, âYouâre going to get whiplash, and I donât want to hear you complaining about it.â
âI have to get back to work,â you sigh. âThank you for your help.â
âYouâre welcome,â Lucy replies. âI- youâre married?!â
Tim rolls his eyes, pats your shoulder, and follows you to your car. Lucy watches as he opens your door for you and leans forward to tell you something that makes you smile.
âTell me everything,â Lucy requests as they return to the shop.
Tim doesnât reply while he follows your car out of the apartment parking lot. Of course, he knows you are perfect for him, but something about hearing it from someone else makes him love you even more.
âWhy donât we get attached to all of her calls?â Lucy asks instead.
âWhy are you still talking?â Tim counters.
Lucy purses her lips, then decides, âThe sarcastic comments are more enjoyable when your wife is around.â
Most things are, Tim thinks. Heâs glad to know youâre safe, and as Lucy continues asking questions he wonât answer, he thinks about you and what you should do this weekend. It will probably be easier to create a plan after he gets the smell of Dexter Wheelerâs apartment off him and his shop and his wedding ring back on his finger.

DUE NORTH: VIGNETTES / 5
A cozy urban fantasy about two best friends who move to the pocket of eccentricity and magic that is Due North
Tony Hall walked into Due Northâs one and only gym, strutting up to the ring in the centre, basking in the crowdâs cheers and laughter. Heâd fought in this ring for nearing five years now, five nights a week â same as any other job.
In those years, heâd faced all sorts of opponents: small, impossibly fast fighters; large, bulky fighters who moved slowly but packed a punch and a half; bears; bearotaurs, terrifying bear-minotaur hybrids; bearees, which are towering creatures that can split into several smaller bears and still not be against the rules since they arenât technically more than one entityâŚokay, mostly bears. He had about evens odds on winning, which werenât exactly thrilling, but, for reasons beyond even his own understanding, he drew larger crowds than anyone in the history of the ring.
He ducked under the ropes, his confidence ebbing and flowing through him, absolutely loving the cheers of the only town in the south of England with âNorthâ in its name. Then his opponent entered the ring, and it went up in a puff of smoke, leaving a sputtering river in its place.
Tony looked into a face held somewhere just under two feet higher than his own, a snarl rippling across it. One eye was covered with a scar, leaving it permanently shut and the other stayed steadily transfixed on Tony, as if it were looking right through him, instantly identifying his every weakness. Apparently having chosen to fight bare-chested, three tally marks could be seen tattooed on the left of the minotaurâs chest and Tony really did not want to find out what they were for. While most fighters used their species characteristics to their advantage, the minotaur had wrapped a cloth over his horns and some of his head.
The act of kindness did nothing to ease his worries, and only one word blazed through Tonyâs mind.
FUCK.

lights, camera, action - lewis hamilton (1/4)

ŕ¨ŕ§ : pairing : lewis hamilton x fem!reader ŕ¨ŕ§ : synopsis (req by @lewismcqueen ) : when lewis hamilton steps behind the camera for his directorial debut, the last thing he expects is to fall for the lead actress he casts.
ŕ¨ŕ§ : genre : romance ŕ¨ŕ§ : tws : mild workplace power dynamics, mentions of media/press stress, brief tension or arguments, mild romantic/sexual tension ŕ¨ŕ§ : wc : 530
part one | part two | part three | part four

Lewis Hamilton had been in front of cameras for most of his life. Heâd mastered interviews, documentaries, sponsorship reels, even executive producing. But this...this was different.
Directing a film wasnât just about showing up with a vision. It was about building something from scratch. Shaping performances. Holding the story in your hands and hoping it made people feel something real.
He wasnât interested in flash or filters. No glamor shots, no casting for name recognition. The script was personal. Quiet. Messy. It needed a lead actress who didnât just act grief but understood it.
So far? Nothing.
Three hours in, heâd seen every version of the same overly rehearsed monologue. Every âit girlâ showed up with glowing resumes and professional headshots. They were beautiful, sure. But none of them moved him.
âLetâs take five,â Lewis muttered to the casting director, already standing and stretching the tension from his shoulders.
Thatâs when the door creaked open.
âSorry Iâm late!â
You stepped into the room, slightly out of breath, tucking a stray piece of hair behind your ear. No glam squad, no staged smile. You wore jeans, a hoodie, and a backpack slung over one shoulder.
Something about you was⌠different.
The assistant leaned in, whispering just loud enough for Lewis to catch it. âLast-minute addition. Theater kid. No rep.â
Lewis raised an eyebrow, glancing you over again. âYou ready?â
You nodded, stepping forward, nerves dancing just behind your eyes. You handed over your resume with a quiet âThank you for seeing me,â and then took your mark.
No stalling. No small talk. Just a single, steadying breath. Then you began.
And everything else disappeared.
The room went still.
You didnât just read lines. You spoke them like youâd lived them. The rawness in your voice wasnât planned, it came from somewhere deeper. Something real. Your hands trembled, your jaw tightened, your voice cracked. And it didnât feel like a performance.
It felt like watching someone fall apart.
By the time the last line left your mouth, the room was silent. Even the casting director had looked up from her notes, watching you like she forgot to blink.
Lewis just stared. Then cleared his throat, trying to shake the weight of it off.
âThat was⌠good,â he said, the understatement hitting his own ears weird.
You gave him a small, unsure smile, tucking your hands into your hoodie pocket.
He blinked again. âWeâll, uh, weâll be in touch. Callbacks. Definitely.â
You thanked them politely and left as quickly as youâd come. The door clicked shut behind you.
A pause.
Then the casting director turned to him with a raised brow. âShe got you.â
âSheâs got something,â he said simply. Quiet. Certain.
Later, he would tell himself he picked you because of your ability. Because you were the best fit for the story.
And that was true.
But so was the way you lingered in his head for the rest of the day. The way he kept picturing that moment your eyes filled with tears, how honest it had been. How it stuck with him, long after you were gone.
He kept it professional. He had to.
But even then⌠he already knew.

Keeping Lag to a Minimum...
I was chatting about a few things I do to combat lag over on discord and realised I do quite a bit of maintenance to reduce lag/load times. I decided to write em all down and before I knew it, I had a big ol' list. Here's hoping it helps!
Save/File Tips:
Clear your caches (located in the same spot as your mod folder fyi) I usually delete the onlinethumbnailcache, avatarcache and localthumbcache caches every time I exit the game, the main one to delete regularly is the localthumbcache file, they're just temporary files but it can get pretty big after a while.. if you're having any mod issues, particularly ui ones, it's always worth deleting that to see if it helps.
Remove any saves you're not using from your saves folder, and keep an eye on save file sizes. In my experience, any saves over around 30-40mb start to get a bit laggy. Things that bump this size up are the amount of townies in game and the amount of lots/objects in the world.
Regarding the above point, I regularly bulldoze lots I don't need anymore, just to save the game from having to cope with extra shit to load in the background and reduce save file bloat.
Similarly, I delete a lot of unnecessary townies. Also, try to keep the amount of outfits on townies to a minimum, ain't no townie need four swimsuit outfits, the game will thank you..
If you have cheats enabled you can usually shift-click/delete object on things like random coffee cups or stray cupcakes sims foolishly drop around the world (or eat em.. whatever tickles ur pickle) just get rid!
Whilst we're keeping objects in game to a minimum.. I try to clear sims inventories now and then, including townies. You can do this via mccc even if you're not currently playing that household by heading to MC Cleaner -> Sell Sim Inventory/Sell Household Inventory. RANDOM LUMPS OF CLAY BEGONE!
Think of a save file like a lot.. the more objects in it, the laggier it gets! Try your best to remove anything or anyone unnecessary where you can.
Hit "Save As" instead of "Save" now and then - the more you overwrite a save, the more chance it has of going wonky, treat your game to a fresh one now and then and remove the old one from your saves folder (maybe don't delete it right away in case you wanna roll back, keep it somewhere safe).
If you can (although ik it can be a pain) set up a new/fresh save, you'd be surprised how bogged down old ones can get! For legacy players, it's usually best to do this whenever you have a small family to save yourself some pain, since you can just save the household and take em to a new save (you will lose sims inventories/household inventories/relationships with sims outside the household tho so beware! Pictures/other collectables can be saved to a lot however, and you can always cheat back relationship bits etc.. bit of a last resort but new saves are shiny and fast!)
Make sure your Screenshots/Video folders are empty - move em somewhere else, it works, trust me. If you have a lot of custom music installed try n' clear some of those out too.. the smaller that Sims 4 directory is, the better.
Delete any last exceptions/last crashes (same spot as your mod folder again) you don't need em unless you're planning to upload em somewhere for help.
Settings Etc:
If you get a bad lag spike, opening the main menu and/or saving can randomly stop this. If it doesn't, try exiting the game, clearing your localthumbcache and restarting.
Clearing all notifications from the game panel can also help.
If you can, close all other apps and background apps you don't need whilst playing, ts4 is super memory hungry so it can definitely help.
The GraphicsRules Override file by Simp4Sims can reduce lag/latency and make your game look a little better in the process!
Srslysims Simulation Lag Fix mod can help reduce lag too (if you've altered the game speed via mccc tho, don't use this unless you plan on resetting it to default).
If you aren't keen on, or barely use a pack, consider disabling it.
Not ideal, especially for those of us taking screenshots, but lowering the graphics settings whilst playing definitely helps.
If you use re/g-shade, consider switching it off whilst playing and only turn it on for screenshots.
A clean and tidy pc/laptop runs better in general. Remove anything you're not using/don't need anymore to free up space, remove temp files, clean up your folders now and again etc etc.. especially that dreaded mod folder, speaking of...
Managing Mods:
SORT OUT YOUR MODS FOLDER FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.. skdsjdjs it doesn't have to be immaculate but at the very least try n' clear it out now n' then. Also try to separate your script mods/overrides from the rest, patch days don't need to be so stressful ;-;
Personally, I don't merge my mods; if something breaks it's much harder to pinpoint! It makes it easier to find/delete specific mods too.. and let's face it, there's usually one or two items in that set you could do without lmaooo.. also, don't think it helps much tbh! Yeah you could say the game doesn't have to work as hard to load merged files but that's debatable, it's still the same amount of items/polys at the end of the day ¯\(°_o)/¯
If you like merging files and/or see results from doing so, you can merge stuff you definitely know you're never getting rid of, especially CAS/BB stuff.. but steer clear of merging gameplay/script mods! If a merged file seems to be the culprit when using the 50/50 method, try unmerging it and 50/50ing it again! You might not need to get rid of everything if something's borked.
Bulk Rename Utility can be used to remove all spaces and special characters from your mod files, the game doesn't particularly like loading those so it'll thank you.
The Sims 4 Mod Manager is a great way to sort through your mods, you can easily see, move and delete files from here (not great for build/buy, poses etc as thumbnails are usually missing, but great for CAS stuff). An extra hint with this that I've noticed is that if any of my mods get renamed with [D1] at the beginning after looking through them via the mod manager, it means it's a duplicate file so you can get rid.
I also use the Sims 4 Tray Importer to help me sort through mods. Simply save a sim/lot with any cc you don't want and find it in the importer, you can then go through all the cc in the cc tab and delete/sort it (I also use this to sort cc if a bunch has the wrong tags etc, makes it easier to find in my folders by saving em to a lot or w/e - it also spots duplicates which is handy).
It's a ballache, but the 50/50 method is tried and tested if you're having issues.
I like to keep an abandoned cc folder tucked away somewhere, that way you can remove mods willy nilly without stressing about losing them. If you change your mind, you can always grab it back!
#ts4#sims 4#simblr#tips#reducing ts4 lag#uhhhhh#idk what else to tag this as#skdjskjd#ALSO! feel free to rb and add ur own tips!#lawd knows we need it with this game lmaoooo#as chaotic as he is.. i bet oscar's pc is immaculate#đ
