ok ok im outting myself for stupidity... whats marzenie.....

IM REALLY INTERESTED SO FAR BUT im still very confused

HOLY SHIT THIS IS MY FAVORITE QUESTION THANK YOU FOR ASKING

Marzenie is my omori au In which the games events occur from Basil’s perspective rather then Sunny’s, which includes giving Basil his own “headspace”, that’s what “Marzenie” is (Marzenie being the polish word for dream)

Marzenie is yes, a space that exists in Basil’s dreams, but that’s about all it has in common with headspace- Basil’s views on the world and his fears influence Marzenie to be far bleaker and more violent then Headspace

Here’s a Map I made to help visualize things I’m talking about-

Marzenie is a frosted over wasteland, everything in it is based upon the very worst of Basil’s thoughts— unlike Sunny he doesn’t really repress his trauma’s, they burden him actively and in some cases voluntarily—  Basil, considering himself responsible for everything tears happened to his friends, allows this hell to exist in his mind as the punishment he believes he deserves

that’s not to say Basil controls Marzenie, it’s almost entirely subconscious, just that Basil allows Marzenie too exist and doesn’t try to improve his thinking

Additionally, like headspace, Marzenie has a persona character for Basil and a Stranger for Sunny

Basil’s persona is Marze, but don’t get me wrong, Marze is not like Omori- while Omori is somewhat of an individual and separate character, Marze is no more then a costume and possesses no consciousness or autonomy separate from Basil- Marze is just a costume that Basil is wearing in these dreams of Marzenie

As for Basil’s Stranger, his name is Sol, within Marzenie itself Sol is a god, the very embodiment of the sun- but separated from his character, metaphorically Sol is Basil’s idealization’s of Sunny and the role Sol plays in Marzenie’s story is a parallel to how Basil has felt without Sunny, like a world without its sun

There are other things in Marzenie that I could absolutely ramble about but I’ll only go on like this if you actually want to know- but that’s rhe rundown!

And actually that ISNT a stupid question because the answer is … hypothetically yes? I haven’t really thought about it, theoretically the Houseboat could be used for travel but theres a lot of reasons that’s a bad idea, firstly navigating is really really difficult when you have neither a sun nor lighthouses, and if the shores of anywhere else are anything like the rocky, jagged ones of the primary landmass here…? I would not hedge ones bets on docking safely

Additionally. There is a nondescript sea monster, I’ve only mentioned it once maybe twice in passing but it does exist and is. Well the only proper word is. You know subnautica? Yeah. Anyway, those are the biggest two reasons it’s generally a bad idea, not to mention Marzenie is extremely cold in the first place but sea level? Frigid. That’s another good reason for not trying that, which isn’t to say Marze hasn’t

Marze has tried a lot of things, Marze has died a lot of ways over the last couple years this place has existed, I’ve actually considered Marzenie having some kind of “death remnants”, objects or scenes left behind that imply previous deaths Marze experienced, the only one I know for certain exists is one for the hunter, I imagine one of the skulls on his cabin wall is that of an antlerd human skull. I can think of other potential ones though

There’s probably extras of Marze’s coat in various places, maybe stuck on a tree branch or in a thorn bush, maybe there’s bags or old lanterns Marze can rifle through and use the fuel of to prolong his current life, and I can answer preemptively that there’s no memory reset system, everyone remembers as much as Basil does- which is to say the dream-remnants of countless horrific fates, although you tend to remember nightmares better then dreams so I think Basil retains at least most of the information from his previous experiences in Marzenie

The fact that Marze has died before is kind of relevant actually because it contextualizes a lot of Marze’s interactions with the handful of ‘sentient’ beings around him, a lot of alter-boy’s dialogue is to the tune of “oh come on, you know how this goes, why keep trying when you know what’s coming?”, and when Maverick and Marze talk Maverick refers to him as a “loyal customer”, there is no pre-Marzenie, all of the context means it’s happened before. I’m not sure what I mean by that yet

ANYWAYYYY there are no stupid questions in Marzenie, if you have a question that you don’t ask because you think it’s dumb literally just ask it anyway, often then not it has a more complicated answer then you’d think!

Only the cave but is different, I think it looks alright but u hate to see the caverns go… oh well!! Now there’s room for a circus in there!!

Gah this map has like NO scale. But idk it’s alright… it’s stylized, and it’s not as though the headspace map is perfectly accurate and proportional either right? It’s all just representative, okay that’s all!!

So I’m sort of composing a Basil au of some general kind- I’m hesitant to call it an au but it is, just not in the usual way

The general idea is just to tell omori from basils perspective, give looks inside his mind and what he’s thinking and delve more into his personal non-sunny related trauma that doesn’t get explored in the game, it’s an au in the sense that I deviate from canon to tell his story in a way that gets around all the missing information (namely stuff about his parents)

In my mind Basil doesn’t have a headspace or a whitespace but he does go somewhere in his dreams and when he spaces out, Basils mind and its locations are comprised of memory’s and vague ideas of places he may or may not have been, very little in Basils mind is entirely new or even warped fantasy versions of real life, it’s more like … decoupage

Also Basils mind is significantly more fucked up in the sense that he doesn’t compartmentalize his trauma like sunny does, it’s just there, right next to the good memories no matter how jarring the transitions are, he can’t hide like sunny can, in a way he doesn’t really want to, in a way Basil sort of wants to be miserable; he thinks he deserves it

I plan on making art for this au soon and maybe even fully writing it- I’ve talked about it a little bit once or twice and if I can I’ll go back and add those posts to the tag I’m about to make- which for the time being is omori!marzenie (marzenie meaning dream in polish, basil is polish by the way that’s my headcanon for him and it’s kind of important to this au idea I have)

For today’s Marzenie, Maverick! Yup, that’s him alright! Remember how I said he’s actually kinda important for this au? This is why

Maverick is the shopkeeper, he sells a selection of items out of his cart, since I’ve been looking at this AU from the angle of it being a game and having a lot of Fear and Hunger inspiration, this is your basic food and sanity items shop- the rarest commodity in in Marzenie would be health items which would mostly be obtained from crafting (but since it’s you know… eternal winter, it’s rare to find the needed herbs for these recipes, making it super hard to heal yourself)

And maybe I’m overthinking it because Marzenie ISNT a game it’s just an AU but like, I like to imagine what it’s gameplay systems would be like yk? Anyway

Below is some further elaboration on this character ⬇️

The two types of animals ‘Maverick’ is are a wolf and a bull, the wolf is because from a lore standpoint wolves are typically the form enemies take in Marzenie, those are like your standard encounter- and while Maverick is friendly towards Marze he’s still part of the group that definitely isn’t, this is a representation of a really delusional headcanon I have that’s a canon thing in Marzenie, which is that Mikhael/ ‘The Maverick’ is secretly friendly towards Basil whenever the rest of the hooligans aren’t around, because in my mind Mikhael isn’t the kind of person who enjoys being cruel- he just puts on that facade to seem cool and dangerous, but in reality Mikhael feels a lot of guilt about how he and his friends treat Basil, being from a very religious family definitely doesn’t help with that guilt

Mikhael chooses to be the person he is for two reasons: Validation and Fear

Not wanting to be part of his family’s business has made him feel isolated and unaccepted, joining to hooligans made him feel validated in his choice to be his own person, even if it meant being a bully

The fear is a fear of many things, the fear that if he isn’t a bully then he’ll be the bullied, the fear that not wanting to hurt Basil will make his friends leave him and he’ll end up in the same situation as Basil himself, the fear that he’s a bad person for his behavior, the fear that he’s a sinner

Like I said, being from a very religious family does not help at all

But all this stuff I’ve pulled out of thin air about Mikhael’s character is why it’s part of Marzenie’s story that he’s secretly nice to Basil, he’ll help him up and walk him home, he’ll drop off something from the bakery for him, and sure he’ll claim that he’s just trying get rid of any baked goods his family gives him because he just doesn’t like them- but the truth is that he just doesn’t want to admit that he’s trying really hard to be a good person, maintaining an aggressive attitude while doing something nice, trying to play both sides in hopes it might all work out in the end-

Mikhael’s comparatively decent behavior towards Basil is why his character in Marzeine is someone helpful rather then an enemy like most of the rest of the hooligans are (ill get to why that’s a MOST later)

Oh, and the bull horns (plus legs but they aren’t visible here) are because the origin of the term ‘Maverick’ for an independent person comes from how it used to be a term for unbranded cattle, thus, … bull, I just thought it was neat

Okay okay no tags this is real shit now. Pulling up the doodle page rn…

…okay!!! So I want to talk a bit about the characterisation in general of basia here outside of marzenie because it’s SO COOL and GUT WRENCHING but marzenie’s on my mind so, that’ll be for later!!!!

So. I think it’s pretty safe to assume that the little hallway gremlin is supposed to be basia…

The drawings line up- at first I thought the family drawing had four figures but, if I squint, you can actually make out another smaller one that’s being obscured by her hand!!! That would be a match for basia’s family as they're described here- and look, one of the taller figures even has a hunting cap on!!

Knowing that, I want to actually look at these drawings a bit closer… the time frame matches up, Danny I saw your post about basia and WWII and there’s a drawing here that at first I believed was just. A plane over a city but may actually be depicting an air strike... Maybe I’m wrong about that though because this character is supposed to be completely benevolent with no sinister or morbid undertones but still!!!

I’m struggling to make out the top one, but… I think it may be a cabin of some sort…? I thought the drawing of the animal was a cat but it might be a fox to tie into her hunting… and then the sun!!! Could possibly be about sunny, or sunflowers… there’s a lot of sun imagery in omori and it goes together a lot so I may try and detangle that mess later…

OH WAIT. WAIT I THINK... THE TOP ONE IS A DEER BEING HUNTED...??? OH GOD THAT'S SO GOOD. OUGH. THAT'S GONNA KILL ME.

However. That brings me on to another guy.

I believe that this MIGHT be basia’s father

It’s… almost very obvious that he would leave but here we have confirmation, so this soldier looking man who has been confirmed to be connected to a character that I’m almost certain is basia is VERY LIKELY meant to be her father, or basil’s great grandfather.

…judging by his design I think it’s safe to assume what happened to him. Also, I think the shotgun in particular, while being a war weapon, is also typically associated with hunting, so there’s another clue!!!

Now that’s a lot of the easy stuff I can deduce here- but I’m not going to stop because mr Dannybobany had been implying there are MORE secrets here so I’m gonna keep digging until my shovel BREAKS!!!!

For this next segment I’m gonna comb through the master post again as well as the doodle page AS WELL AS THE REBLOGS ON EACH POST (because they often include CRUCIAL info) and see what i can decipher from them <3

THIS I find incredibly INTERESTING.

We now know that basia’s character is in the house… BUT!!! DID YOU CATCH THAT

“…has a theme of some kind. Maybe just a little bit of a thing that ties each unique character found in it together”

AHA. CONFIRMATION THAT NOT ONLY ARE THERE MORE CHARACTERS IN THIS HOUSE, BUT WEVE ALREADY IDENTIFIED MULTIPLE THAT COULD BE RESIDING HERE!!!! We can now safely assume this is where basia’s father is found too…

Soooo what’s left for me to infer… WELL

Let’s take a closer look at the house… and its position!!! The house itself is the final area in marzenie before you reach HIM- to get there marze must go through this area, which indicates it represents something very significant to basil's character as whole.

When we compare it to basil’s current house, its NOT a match up at all- chimneys are in different areas, house is much bigger, and there are a lot of architectural details missing. You COULDDDDD argue it’s a subconscious hyperbole of his house, but there’s too many differences for me to believe that, so it isn’t where he and his grandmother currently live.

BUT WAIT.

THE PALE MAIDEN. IS HERE TOO.

Albeit only when you DO seek her out, but now we have THREE confirmed residents.

What ties them all together?

These are basil’s ancestors.

I believe the haunted house is meant to be the house basil’s family have all lived in at some point- that, or it’s just a house like building meant to house all of them. Either way…

The fact that it is named the haunted house area tells me that this represents basil being haunted by his ancestry. His ancestors, his family.

Haunted with the memory of them. And here’s another little thing I noticed.

Basia is the only benevolent being in this area- heck, the entirety of marzenie. She's entirely innocent... for the reasons you mentioned above. I think her inclusion is heartbreaking... but, throughout her life, she was there for basil. She stuck by him, until she ceased to exist. The pale maiden and the soldier however are both sinister monsters like the rest of the characters.

Notice how both of them abandoned their family at some point?

Basia’s father abandoned her when he left for the war, and never came back. “Basia knew a lot but didn’t really love doing any of it except hunting with her father”. Basia loved him and loved the things he taught her. She was disinterested in anything but when he would come and teach her how to do something they both enjoyed because she loved it and she loved him.

And then he left. And never returned. It’s not his fault, of course; he died. But basia was abandoned.

And we all know how it is with basil’s mother of course- no matter which story or reason you pick for why she left her son, she did. She sent him away, and rarely ever visited him. And, as Danny has drawn attention to before, when her mother was dying, withering away, turning into a husk of herself, and needed her the most- she was completely absent at her side, as always. She abandoned her and she abandoned basil.

I think the haunted house area represents the generational trauma of being abandoned within the Musiel family. It haunts basil, because it is deeply integral and crucial to his character. It is the very crux of it and that is why this area is so damn important. It is ALWAYS in the back of his mind, always lurking in his subconscious. Knowing all og this... in his mind, he’s always destined to be alone. Always destined to be abandoned. Like his family before him, and before them, and before them. It’s something that’ll keep happening to him eventually, and maybe, just maybe, he deserves it.

OR I’m completely wrong and spewing bullshit KDJDJNDNDJEJ- but I think that’s what this is, and what this area means. There’s probably a LOT more for me to analyse here but I genuinely can’t find any of it yet so. Big puppy eyes pleaseeee clues for my idiot brain AKSKDJSJ Danny you’re too clever for me-

FONALLY just on this all in general outside of marzenie- OUGHHHH. I love your interpretation of her SO MCUH. It’s so interesting and cool youre really the best at every basil thing ever… ASAAAWJDJJEJS

Random little post, here’s Basia!

(Basil’s grandma)

I’ve been developing her more and more as a character lately because I think she deserves it

Sidenote: yes Basil and Basia have the same surname, Basil was born with his fathers surname but when he was about five Basia had it changed because 1. She doesn’t like Basils dad and 2. She preferred her and Basil to have the same surname on their documents

With that out of the way! I’ve thoguht about drawing a young Basia for awhile now, I think when she was younger she had a similar sort of nerves to Basil, when she was a kid she had a stutter but shook it off as she got older

Before he left for the war Basia’s father took her hunting and showed her how to skin animals, he did the same for Basia’s sisters of which she had two, Basia often found herself a caretaker for her younger sister, while the oldest of them and their mother took care of the household work

The life Basia led as a young girl left her a jack of all trades kind of person, she knew a little bit about anything, but she knew a lot about nothing- she was the kind of kid that just slipped into a room without you noticing and listened to you talk, but by all means she stayed the more mild mannered type, Basia knew a lot but didn’t really love doing any of it except hunting with her father, but when he didn’t come home she mostly abandoned that and didn’t pick it up again until she had a daughter of her own, whom.. took little interest, eventually she got to share that love of hunting with Basil but by that point she’d gotten older and they didn’t get to do it as often as Basia would have wanted, she wished more then anything she’d get to watch that boy grow up and learn what she’d wanted to teach him but it didn’t end up happening

Alright okay. So this is the part where my AU becomes relevant, I’m gonna tag this post normally so if you don’t care about that I’ll put it under a cut

Hi mutuals, not sure if I should tag this as Marzenie? I probably will though for what I, about to explain

The real reason I wanted to have a desgin for Basia when she was Basils age is because this version of her… is a marzenie character, Basil when he was a kid found an old photo of her and now she sort of just appears in his dreams that way, she represents something Basil feels like he lost but never really had… more time with the only family he’s ever known, seeing her young, as she in a time Basil did not exist, is comforting to Basil- it distracts him for a moment of the reality where she isn’t the same… where the person who resided him is loosing herself and fading farther every day into the grip of death

I’ve discussed this before but Basil was named after her, the person he is relies on the influence she’s had in him, she’s more a mother to Basil then his real mother ever was, Young Basia is the only presence in Marzenie that has no malevolent undertones or secrets or hidden symbolism, she is a memory, she is a tomb of a person who is slowly ceasing to be, when the real Basia dies this will be her archive, Basils mind will be the only place that captures her accurately, as she was, both at the end of her life and much closer to its beginning

Another thing I’ve alluded to is that at some point Basil had a completely different place in his dreams, Marzenie as it is only formed after the incident like with what happened for Sunnys headspace I believe they both had a dreamscape before just much smaller ones that they didn’t interact with as often, it all ties into how I think about headspaces (cough cough, my Mr Outback analysis, cough cough), I think once upon a time Basil’s dreamscape was a simple flower field at dusk with only one other person, a familiar person much like himself for him to confide in where no one else would ever hear.

OOOH... OH DANNY THIS IS VERY INTERESTING

Marzenie not working on a reset cycle basis makes a lot of sense actually... thematically of course and also with a lot of the context i've seen so far. Also you talk about Marzenie as if it were a game at times and this also would make a lot of sense from that viewpoint... AGH and its also the direct opposite of Sunny's headspace. that's VERY cool. the death remnant things are ALSO really cool they remind me a little bit of the glitching remains from ln2? obviously VERY different but ive been replaying that lately so it came to mind JHSJHDJSHDJ... imagine you're walking and like you see a broken lamp or something and you sigh to yourself like "this fucking deer died AGAIN" JSHJSHF

also PFFF i failed to take like. the logistics of ANYTHING into account with the boat i was just extremely curious... poor marze he is just stuck. poor guy... and what what a SEA MONSTER??? SUBNAUTICA LIKE??? HOW DID I MISS THIS. HOW DID I FORGET??? THIS????
