I was thinking about one of the headcannons @whos-lucy had and I was wondering... What would a day in Shanon's life look like with Vee asking permission to do... Literally anything? So I wrote about it, you're welcome.
*cough* @soupiestzilla *cough* eat food.
Shanon smiled as she got up that morning, as it was one of the first days off she had with the toons, and she wanted to spend time with them to see what they liked to do. She stretched, yawned, then simply walked out of her room, pajamas and messy hair, no care. Though in the hallway, she ran into an odd sight... Vee was just sitting there, waiting, sitting on the edge of the living room. Shanon looked at her with a very confused look, while Vee just silently stared back for a moment, hand on her leg, where she had been injured when she found her.
"May I change my bandages in the bathroom, please?" Vee quietly asked, which made Shanon even more confused. Why... Would she have to ask about that..?
"Uh, yeah Vee, that's... Pretty important. Do you want me to come help you?" She asked, and when the robot nodded, she smiled and walked right over, scooping up the toon and going into her room again to use the master bathroom instead, as it had more space to move in it. Vee looked extremely anxious, clinging to her as she looked down.
"Miss, I'm not-"
"You're allowed in my room, Vee. It's alright to look around, you're okay here." Shanon softly reassured, flicking on the light to her bathroom before she sat Vee down on the toilet seat, then knealt down in front of her and started unbandaging her leg. Vee was silent, looking away, still staring at the floor. Was she never allowed to look at any room except hers? Why would she behave like that? Shanon just grabbed the first aid kit she kept beside the shower and opened it, grabbing the things she needed to rebandage it before she closed it again, and soon patched her right up. They couldn't clean it or disinfect it because... Well... That's wet, she can't get Vee wet, so that was what they had to do. It did look much better already though, ichor was weird like that. Shanon slowly got back up and picked Vee right up again, walking out of the bathroom with her before she turned off the light, then walked out of her room again. She never closed any doors, mostly since she was used to living completely on her own, plus she didn't have anything to hide from them honestly.
"Now, where did you want to go? I gotta make Shelly and I breakfast." She asked, getting a shrug from Vee.
"I usually just stay in our room... I don't do much..." She admitted, making Shanon immediately concerned.
"Vee, you can do stuff, you never have to shut yourself in your room here. Come on, let's go to the kitchen together, I... Don't like the idea of you being alone." She replied, and without even waiting for a reply, she carried Vee right off to the kitchen with her, putting her down on a stool she had in there before she started getting things ready to make the food. Vee watched, looking extremely hesitant to do anything other than listen to Shanon. It was kind of concerning...
"Am I allowed to go see where Shelly is?" Vee asked, making Shanon nod.
"Just don't run, please. You're allowed to find your girlfriend though." Shanon softly replied, watching as the robot very carefully lowered herself and got off the stool, just to very carefully start walking off at an incredibly slow pace. Shanon blinked a few times as Shelly walked in casually, then sighed when she saw what Vee was doing.
"Vee your normal walk isn't running."
"To you! What if she thinks it is? I'd be in trouble!" Vee retorted, which made Shanon sigh.
"Honey she's right, you can walk normally, you can even speed walk, I just don't want you going so fast you run into things. You're also an adult, you really don't need my permission to do anything." She explained, getting a nod of understanding from Shelly, while Vee just... Looked even more nervous, now fidgeting with her antennae and looking at Shelly, obviously not really understanding. Shelly just shrugged as she sat on the counter, understanding the very laid back rules pretty well- as long as things are reasonably clean, nothing is broken on purpose and nobody's hurt, she doesn't care. But to Vee, this was a field of landmines, sure she'd say it's fine now but later, what would happen? Delilah always was that way, one day she'd be able to go to a certain room, the next day it's banned. One day she can take a nap, the next day she can't. She could hardly see the other mains in her freetime in the end, as Delilah kept telling her no. Vee was confused... And always has been, honestly. She looked at Shanon for answers again, pleading with her for more strict rules, but they were never answered, mostly because she had genuinely no idea.
"So... Can... Can we play a board game after breakfast and be okay?" Vee asked after an internal panic attack, and Shanon nodded.
"Yeah I actually bought those for you two the day after I brought you here, I'm surprised you never touched them." Shanon replied casually, making Vee nervously laugh while Shelly looked at her.
"Vee kept saying we'd be in trouble if we did and refused to touch them, I have no idea why she's like this. Wasn't Veronica the really laid back handler you really liked to hang around, mom?" Shelly asked, and Shanon nodded, having a feeling she knew exactly why though. She had to hold back from showing anger, but after seeing her babies in such a poor state, abandoned, forgotten, and now acting like abused children- oh she was pissed at Delilah. She just took a deep breath, then smiled again.
"Veri is still like that, just in a different state now, we still talk. But don't worry about it baby, I'll handle it, okay?" Shanon reassured as she continued to make the pancakes, getting a nod from Shelly. She could tell Shelly had a lot more trust and love in her than Vee, but she was at peace with that, as she was Shelly's handler not Vee's. She'll show Vee as much love as she could, she'll make her feel very loved and cared for, even if she would have to hide the fact that she wants to grab an AK-47 and kill a bitch while doing so.
"We'll just work extra hard to make her see how nice you are!" Shelly boldly said, getting a look from Vee.
"I know your handler, you two were inseparable, I trust her. I... I won't talk about it though, I'm not allowed t-"
"You're allowed to do anything, Vee, stop. If you need to talk about anything, we're here for you darling, please... Just say what's going on." Shelly pleaded, but Vee shook her head.
"I'll just go get the board games..." Vee softly spoke, walking off at a somewhat normal pace now. Shelly looked absolutely frustrated, her tail wagging slowly as she thought, obviously just wanting Vee to accept that everything is okay now and upset she couldn't grasp it yet. Shanon sighed as she flipped over the last pancake, then took it off the pan and slid it onto the plate she had for Shelly before handing it to her.
"I get it, I'm worried about her too, but I want you to trust me here. Just keep saying yes to everything she asks for, unless she's going to hurt someone. If we make it normal for her to hear yes, it'll help her understand a bit better. Though, if we could find out who made her like this, I'd like to know." Shanon softly said, and Shelly nodded as she started eating her pancakes quietly. She knew exactly what she meant, she was honestly on the same page though, she'd love to beat up whoever the hell made Vee so on edge about everything. The two however just quietly ate as they sat in different spots in the kitchen, Vee eventually coming back and just sitting on the floor between them, watching curiously. It was pretty uneventful for a bit, as all Vee wanted to do was play various board games with them, though when it was around lunchtime, there was a gentle tug on Shanon's shirt as she was making Shelly her dino nuggets. Shanon just looked, and it was Vee, holding one of Shanon's many dinosaur books.
"Yeah you can read that, go ah-"
"I was wondering if... You'd read it to me, after you eat." Vee gently corrected her, making Shanon blink a few times. Odd request, but if her and Shelly wanted storytime, she was willing to do it.
"Oh, yeah absolutely, you wanted to cuddle on the couch as I did it, right? Shelly told me you loved doing that." Shanon suggested, watching as Vee's eyes widened in shock and awe, her tail starting to wag a little as she just nodded. Shanon chuckled at that, it was so cute seeing her act like such a kid. Though she soon was back to making sure the nuggets didn't burn at all, ignoring how Vee walked off behind her, hoping pretending she didn't notice would make her feel more comfortable going around the house and exploring. However, it wasn't long before she felt a familiar tug, and she looked back over. Vee now had her favorite plush tucked under her arm, the other stayed in place with her hand still gripping her shirt. She looked up at her like a little kid would when they wanted attention, but didn't know how to ask for it, so Shanon softly pet her head a little as she turned back to the oven.
"Almost done honey, I can give you attention after they're done."
"Why are you so nice to me?" Vee suddenly asked, making Shanon freeze. Her heart ached at how confused and desperate for answers she sounded, and it hurt worse when she looked back at her and saw the weary look in her eyes and slight frown in her smile. She desperately needed love, even though she was scared of it. Shanon would've sobbed right there and then if she wasn't used to seeing that look.
"Because everyone deserves love, Vee. That would include you, and it always will, no matter who told you you don't before I took you in. You're always going to deserve to be treated like anyone else, and if anyone tells you otherwise, just tell them to shut the fuck up. You are an amazing toon, okay? I'll always be here to remind you of that, and so is Shelly." Shanon explained, watching Vee as she tried to make herself believe it, but she didn't seem to. That's okay, she'll believe it eventually, no matter how much it stung to see what used to be such a usually bold and outgoing person act so scared and beaten up.
"Can I have a hug before we start reading..?" Vee asked quietly, but before Shanon replied, she knealt down and gave the robot a tight hug, fighting back the tears that threatened to fall as she held her protectively. She'd swear she'll never let anyone else hurt her if she could, though she instantly started slightly crying when Vee hesitantly hugged her back. This poor baby... Was scared to give someone hugs... How dare they do this to her.
"You can always hug me baby, I'll always give you a hug. I'll always protect you... I promise."
"Always..?"
"Always."

fascinating thing about sinners is how absolutely doomed the narrative is.
like okay if sammie hadn't gone to the juke joint, remmick probably wouldn't have shown up. but then the klan would have. okay smoke took those assholes out solo, if it was him and stack maybe they could have handled it. well the juke joint would have shut down in a month because no one had any real fucking money because of the sharecropping scrip. not to mention two seperate mobs are on their way to fuck the twins up (what do you MEAN you robbed al capone??). okay maybe they covered their tracks, well they're still in the fucking jim crow south and stack and mary have a cool 35 years until loving v virginia so best case scenario is he's broke and watching the love of his life from afar until he's 70. plus annie implied the twins were on borrowed time anyway since she'd been quietly protecting them the whole time they were gone.
idk it both adds to the horror that there was no way out and just solidifies sammie saying it was the best day of his life, like that one little perfect moment was all they were going to get anyway

i have such a love for characters who descend into madness or villainy out of deep, deep empathy. characters who fundamentally cannot cope with the cruel realities they find themselves in and blow up about it in spectacular fashion. fallen angel type characters with tears of outrage in their eyes. characters who break before they bend, and break so badly they splatter blood all over their noble ideals. every variation on it gets me so good

We're going on an ass kicking adventure.
[First] Prev <–-> Next
#poorly drawn mdzs#mdzs#wei wuxian#lan wangji#Yes indeed this is a reference to the classic 'Kirby's fucking pissed' meme. It felt fitting given the circumstances.#Wei Wuxian is nothing but a villain now. His name is but a booeyman and scapegoat for everything that goes wrong.#It is a cruel and unusual punishment to be Irrepairable to others. That no matter what you do - you are othered and unsalvageable.#While this situation deals with necromancy & war & politics...boy does it ever mirror how modern drama campaigns go.#I wonder if MXTX did that on purpose? Considering how SVSSS talks about the relationships between authors and their fans/work -#Its stands to reason that WWX story is indeed a parallel for how the public prefers black and white & sensationalist views of people.#People are heroes or villains and trying to think about the nuance is too much work.#And it does not matter what the truth or lies are. The rumour exists and so it must hold truth.#It feels like someone dropped a poorly researched callout post on WWX on twitter that went viral.#80% of the people don't even know who he is but are still leaving him death threats.#“Guys I know we all used to really love WWX's content but I heard he unethically sourced his bones for his last art installation...”#Okay actually he might indeed do unethical bone sourcing. I need to think longer on what the hyper-specific hobby drama might be.#And a huge shout out to LWJ who is right in the vicinity watching this happen in horror. *That* is a specially kind of torment too.

“Don’t deify the dead.”
“Why not?”
“Because it’s not the truth. They were human, they were flawed and that fleeting imperfect nature is what made them them.”
“…Save your poetry.”
“My lady—“
“It makes more sense that I can’t touch a god than it does to believe I’ll never see them again.”

Down in the streets of Gotham, in the side alley next to Express Urgent Care run by one Leslie Thompkins and that was funded by the Martha Wayne Foundation was a soup kitchen.
Well...a soup kitchen of sorts. Not in any way official but if you were hungry in Crime alley you knew that the food would be safe and warm...and it was a place where *you* could be safe and warm.
Danny had left a week after his parents found out that he was Phantom, a week after he had seen their grief, the regret and pain in their eyes. The week had been spent in suspense, he knew that they needed to talk about what had happened but neither of his parents were ever able to even start bringing it up before they were sobbing.
Danny knew his parents loved him, thst his father felt soul crushing guilt, that his mother spent hours staring at herself in the mirror, as if she didn't even know who was looking back at her.
And to spare them both, Danny left.
It wasn't hard to do, not when he could turn invisible and phase through walls, a final text to Sam and Tucker to say his good byes (he knew that they would break and tell his parents where he would be going) and a particularly hard hug to leave from Jazz, Danny flew off with only a back pack.
He had traveled across the US for a few months, occasionally snagging a post card from a super store to send off home, paying only when he had the excess funds (Sam's rants about mega rich corporate billionaires let him know just which stores wouldn't miss the few bucks the cards sold for)
He had met up with Dani a few times, when she was in the country, handing him Vlads credit card and telling him to keep it (though he never did) only ever using it to book a room for a few nights at a hotel to clean himself up and sleep in a real bed.
He settled in Gotham after a while, he had briefly stayed in Faucett but that place didn't have nearly enough ecto for him to live comfortably.
Gotham on the other hand? It had everything, cops that don't question why a teen is on the streets, natural ecto up the wazoo and well...a crime rate that would dissuade his parents ever looking for him there.
He had set up a more permanent shelter in an abandoned apartment building (after chasing out the low level drug dealers that were using it) and found that he kinda liked the vibes of the place under the blatant crimes being committed in broad day light.
Sure people could see you getting mugged and look the other way, but if you were still alive and there 5 minutes later, they would come back, hand you something to clean up your now bloody nose and point out the bodega that had the best sandwiches.
It was a sense of community that Danny didn't know he had missed for the many months he traveled.
His first "cook out" wasn't even supposed to be a cook out, his apartment building was mostly wood and he didn't trust himself to not burn it down, so he came outside, setting up a portable stove and setting up a pot filled with some, water to boil up a soup mix.
As he waited for it to come to temp, he saw the group of homeless rubbing their hands together, watching him with curiosity, though that quickly turned to hunger as the smell of the soup spilled out into the alley.
Instead of turning the others away Danny only shrugged, pulled out his spare paper bowls and handed them out, taking a few bites first to show that it was safe to eat.
What followed was a sort of tradition, Danny would come out a few times a day, take out his hot plate and pot and set up a soup, others started asking if they could pitch in, and well...Danny would have loved to keep providing it freely but his food was quickly dwindling.
So his soup got add in, some jerky that Crazy Tom had got tossed in, a few herbs (re:weeds) were added in by Miss O'Connor, and Danny didn't even know where Lady Dimond pulled out some spices from, but he wasn't about to question the her, he had learned never to question where the working girls hid their things.
And it sort of grew from there, who ever was around came by, some came out of their way to share a meal, but it became a meeting place of sorts "Come by the Kitchen at noon, Tom got his hands on some steak! And it ain't even smells bad!"
Sure gangs tried to pull up on the meeting place, tried to intimidate the people there or coerce them into doing something...well that was until the host, some punk teen with hair darker than black and blue eyes that were so light they were white came up, and dished out a heavy handed fist into their jaws and sent them packing.
And so the Kitchen became a safe space, if you were hungry, if you were in danger, come by the little alley way, right next to the Express Urgent Care, the Host will take care of you there, if your willing to share, to stay peaceful with the rest of the gathered people, then you were welcome to grab a bite and relax, because the Kitchen was always safe.
---
It would be a few years since the Kitchen started, since people had brought chairs and tables, since an old grill of questionable origin was left out side it, since tarps with only a few holes were hung up to keep the place dry when it rained, since rugs covered the ground and the the alley it was in was swept clean of any needles or cigarette butts.
But for one boy it had only been a few short days since his Mama died, since he had found her cold and dead in the bathroom, a belt tied around her arm and a needle still in her hand.
Jason was miserable, he had stayed with her for the a single day before he knew he would have to leave, the body of his mother would start to decompose soon, so he did what he had too, calling the police with his mother's phone that didn't have a lot of minutes left on it, telling them the address before hanging up and leaving it there so he couldn't be tracked.
He couldn't be there when the cops showed up, foster care would do shit for him, and at least his Mama would be buried, and not left to rot in their bath tub.
So a young Jason Todd, scared, alone and hungry came to the Kitchen, as his mother had told him to many times before, had told him to seek out it's Host if anything ever happened to her...and well...at the very least he would get something to eat...
