Tonights entry

The last year and a half has been the hardest time of my life, however it has also been the biggest year of growth I have also been through as a person as well.

A lot of my close friends know I have had depression and anxiety for most of my life. I have struggled with GAD and social anxiety from what I am assuming were things that happened in my past. I believe it has affected my friendships and relationships over the years and also became worse over time being caused by bad friendships and relationships.

The last 18 months have been traumatic, from watching my mother die last year to cancer, to losing my wife this year from my own stupidity, lack of improving my mental health and learning how to communicate constructively and honestly without holding anything back or reacting badly to confrontation.

They say you shouldn’t live life with regrets, but no matter how true those words feel, it’s difficult to not regret everything you should have done better or differently to do more for the people I cared about the most in the world. With one, I should have spent more time to help my mother as much as I could when she was having her bad days. On the other side, I was blinded by my own happiness being with my ex-wife, that I didn’t see that she was unhappy and struggling being with me, I didn’t ask her the right questions and I never knew the pain and sadness which was in her mind.

My mum was the strongest person I’ve ever known. To live with cancer and live in pain for over 10 years. She put on a front constantly that she was ok all the time because she didn’t want her children to see her in pain. I only learnt she was always in pain and how terrible some of her days were once I discovered her diaries after she died. The words on those pages cut me to my soul, to realise the pain and sadness she was hiding from us all those years because of how proud she was. She was truly such an amazing and humble woman. The words in those pages were deep and it was hard realising that many days I visited, she would be in pain those days, yet she still forced herself to come out of the house with me and walk around the Plaza or get a coffee or get Korean food just to do things with me even when she didn’t want to leave the house.

My mum used to complain a lot that I was always on my phone when I was visiting her. While I spent the time on my phone messaging my partner while with her, I now realise that it was the wrong thing to do. People shouldn’t be on their phones when they are with people they care about, even if they are contacting other people special to them. It makes the person you are with feel like they are not worth your time when you are staring at those screens. I also made the same mistake in my relationship, I have a habit that when I’m anxious, I would play a quick game of something like Hearthstone on my phone to try and put my mind elsewhere and try to calm the thoughts in my head, sometimes I’ll just scroll aimlessly through facebook even though I’m not interested in anything being shared. I’ve now realised I need to find a healthier avenue for dealing when I am in these situations when they occur and need to face them head on instead of hiding infront of a screen or not getting out of my comfort zone.

My anxiety caused me to have an irrational fear of flying for many years. I was terrified of getting into a plane and going somewhere. The constant fear of something like the plane crashing or even getting somewhere and then something really bad happening at the destination was enough to make me not want to travel at all. This year I have more than faced that fear 100 fold. It took me 1 ½ years to finally push myself to plan an entire honeymoon in Fiji and then go through with it for my ex-partner. I was also blessed to have a chance to make a spontaneous choice by being invited by one of my friends Rudy to experience Mexico and Belize with him in May. That was a total of ten flights all together in the span of two weeks. It was insane, I never would have in my life thought I could do something like that, but I did. I even got sick for half the trip yet it was still a super amazing experience and I feel like it caused me to conquer my fear of flying. To prove some months after I got back, I was then invited by another friend Rachel to join her for a few days in Wellington where I had never been before. I was no longer afraid of flying at all, it had become easy to me and this trip proved that. These people being there for me and making me do this thing completely out of my comfort zone caused me to fight my anxiety of flying head on and I came out victorious.

This has lead me to believe that it really is possible to overcome things like anxiety even if it is little by little, I want to attempt this, it does take a lot of work though. The strength my mother had to push herself to get out of her house when she was down and in pain makes me realise I need to do better, I want to live up to the strength my mother had and make myself worthy to be proud of. I have been through 10 counselling sessions this year and was given CBT techniques and exercises to do to try and combat my negative thinking. It really is so hard to try and think positively after you have already lost the one person you would have fought the hardest to try and be positive for. However as they say, you need to also do it for yourself, you can’t be truly happy unless you combat your own demons and try and become happy with you too.

My social anxiety took a turn for the worst this year, I found it extremely hard to leave the house and see people for months, I had the constant feeling that I wasn’t good enough for anyone, the feeling that no one would want to hang out with me, that I was unlovable and worthless. I was lucky that I have some amazing friends who have been helping me through this time, people who have been trying to get me to see my own self-worth is not in having a partner and people who have also dealt with things like anxiety in the past so they sort of understood me on levels like I had never felt like I had been understood in the past. I am so grateful to people like Stephanie, Julia and Dari in my life who never gave up on me even when I would have annoyed the shit out of them many times. I’ve also been lucky to reconnect with a few people from my past within the last 6 months who have been there for me and given me valuable advice when I was at my low points like Karma, Samantha, Caroline, Rachel, Becs, Jennifer, Nicola and Taylah. There has been a few people who have had countless lunches with me in town (Julia) and coffee time at my own home (Tere) or dinner with me (Jhancy) when I’ve felt so miserable and alone at times. The moments with them were always full of love and compassion and sometimes just seeing people’s faces when you are down is what you need to bring you back from a dark place. I’ve even had a voice at reason in my own office at work from a friend called Max who has been through many of his own trials in the past, he has been amazing at helping me try and rationalise some of the irrational things that occur in my head daily.

I have been through many breakups in the past and the reality is, I’ve never really learnt very much from them. My break-ups have usually ended really badly, cheating, being left for someone else, etc. Even though there has been some really bad and hurtful times which has caused me to breakdown through all this, this is actually the first breakup where I have stayed in contact with my ex-partner afterwards, it has been a blessing because it has given me the opportunity to talk to her and find out what went wrong and the sort of things I need to improve about myself, things I had never had the opportunity to learn in the past because there was no communication afterwards. This has given me a strong foundation and the ability to look upon situations from the past with a fresh set of eyes and a new open mindset to change, I have been trying to learn about myself so that I can be the best version of myself in an attempt to not repeat past mistakes and cause anymore hurt in the future.

All of these people have helped me become better, to think better and to try and act better. I have been forcing myself to attack my social anxiety head on recently by going to meetups and hanging out with people I hardly know and meet new people. I’ve been lucky that my friends Cheng and Min also sometimes go to these events so even though I have had a few panic attacks and left the events in the past. Having a good friend there has put my mind at ease on other occasions and I count anytime I can stay there for multiple hours as a success in combating the social anxiety I’ve always struggled with.

This year and been an extremely trying year for me, I still haven’t mourned the loss of my mother. I don’t really know how I’m supposed to if I’m completely honest but this really is a year for me to try and improve and try and work on my mental state. I do believe even though I started slow and have had a lot of bumps in the road this year, that I am still on my way to a better version of me, a much more open version of me but I still have a lot more work to do at this stage. I need to keep pushing forward and become open in mind and heart to the ideas of moving forward and moving on. I need to do this for myself and I need to do this for the people who care about me. I no longer want my irrational and constant negative mindsets to define me or hold me back in life.

The Morning Cometh: The July 2018 LSAT Recap

July LSAT takers: where were you on February 8, 2014? Maybe this was a simpler, pre-LSAT time in your life, and you were trying to figure out the newfangled “Stories” feature on Snapchat, while listening to Katy Perry and Juicy J’s “Dark Horse,” on your way to see the surprisingly good The Lego Movie, after watching the opening ceremonies to the twenty-second Winter Olympics games in Sochi? Or maybe, on the other hand, you were taking the February 2014 LSAT. If you were in the second camp, some may say you had an advantage over your social media-using, trap-pop-listening, Scandinavian toy-movie-watching, winter-sport-viewing counterparts.

Or, where were you in September 2017? Were you wondering how anyone could possibly enjoy that dreadful new Taylor Swift single that was skyrocketing up the charts, but mounting a defense of the scary clown movie to your friends? Or were you among fellow chosen ones who observe the Sabbath on Saturday, taking the LSAT given on Sundays for the folks of your stripe? If you were in the latter group, some may say you had a sizable advantage over your gentile peers.

That’s because the test LSAC gave out yesterday on July 23, 2018 was — as had been widely suspected — was simply an old “nondisclosed” test. Specifically, the old February 2014 test. This test was also administered to Saturday Sabbath observers in September 2017. So I guess the intrepid folks who thought they were signing up for something brand new with the July LSAT were actually just exploring well-worn ground.

But this shouldn’t be that surprising — in fact, reusing “nondisclosed” exams is precisely why LSAC makes some exams “nondisclosed” in the first place. When LSAC announced — sort of last minute — that it would add a July exam after already expanding the number of LSATs administered each year, it wasn’t like they could suddenly hire way more qualified psychometricians to devise, test, and equate three more exams each year. It would be so much cheaper and easier to simply draw from the well of old February exams. So it’s understandable that they would do this. For years, this is what they’ve done for Saturday Sabbath observers, for people who had to take the test on a different day because of an emergency at the test center, and for international test takers (allegedly, this February 2014 test was used for test takers in Asia in September 2016, as well).

Now, it is a little bold to re-use the same test maybe four times in the span of just over four years. And, if you had a hard time with the July test — like a lot of people reportedly did — you may be worried that a group of test takers who already took the exam when it was first administered were given a distinct advantage. Maybe so much of an advantage that it could affect the curve of this exam, and your chances of scoring well. But honestly, how many people took the February 2014 and then the July exam yesterday? Almost no one spends almost four-and-a-half-years studying for the LSAT.

Even if someone did, what are the odds that they remembered anything specific or helpful about that test? Can remember any specific Snapchat Story you made in 2014? Can you repeat a single line Juicy J rapped in “Dark Horse”? What was the name of the main character in The Lego Movie? You’d have to admit that those should be more memorable pieces of cultural ephemera than an LSAT. And if you can’t remember those, there’s no way someone who took a four-hour test — and never saw that test again — would have a strong enough memory to greatly benefit from taking the test once.

The Sabbath test takers from September 2017 and the test takers in Asia from September 2016 took the test more recently, true, but how many of them retook the July test? LSAC, as far as I can tell, doesn’t publish the number of tests administered to people who observe Saturday Sabbath, but it did publish the total number of exams administered in Asia in the 2016-17 LSAT “year.” In that year, there were a total of 2,286 test takers in Asia. That’s about 2.6% of all test takers that year. Typically about a third of all test takers take the exam in September. So let’s assume that about 762 people took the September exam in Asia. Even if everyone who took the exam in Asia in September 2016 also took the July test in North America this year and even if they remembered enough from the September 2016 exam to have a distinct advantage — two “ifs” that are roughly the size of the Asian continent itself — they would still represent only about 4.7% of the 16,338 people who were registered to take the July test. They would have at most a negligible effect on the curve.

So … yes, LSAC got a little lazy and re-used a test. And unfortunately they re-used what was previously considered to be a particularly difficult exam. But fortunately, I don’t think the former is going to influence the latter. In other words, I don’t think the fact that this test has been administered before made this test any less difficult for anyone. So I would expect the curve to very forgiving — potentially allowing test takers to miss as many as 13 questions and still earn a 170. And I don’t think the fact that maybe a handful of the July test takers already saw the exam is going to change that fact.

But it was a difficult test by all accounts, so let’s go over what we’re hearing about it, section-by-section.

Logical Reasoning

We almost never get a clear picture of a Logical Reasoning section immediately after the test, for understandable reasons. Test takers are inundated with 51 short questions (sometimes as many as 77 if they get a third LR section as the experimental section), about all manner of topics. It’s tough to remember anything about these sections, other than maybe a fleeting memory of an errant question or two.

We’ve heard tales of questions about fossilized birds and dinosaurs, about Chinese coins and Quebecois cards, and about shrimp economics. So you know, just the classic topics we all know about and read about all the time. It’s tough to gather anything specific about question distribution, though.

Reading Comprehension

For the Reading Comprehension section, the first passage was about the effect of French Revolution on women’s rights — a topic the LSAT has covered before, way back in October 2001. We’re hearing the second passage was the comparative passage about the aesthetics of viewing sports — whether we appreciate athletes in the same way we appreciate works of art. Does the violence Russell Westbrook inflicts upon a rim inspire us in the same way that violence Jackson Pollack inflicted upon a canvas?* The third passage was a physics passage about Karl Popper and “theories of everything.” This passage is the consensus pick for the most-difficult passage. It was dense, but not impossible for most test takers. In all likelihood, test takers who took the time to understand the most important parts of the passage — like the number of arguments and the author’s role — but didn’t waste time trying to develop a theory of “everything” in the passage — had the easiest time with it. Finally, there was a passage about Belizean common law and its effect on indigenous Belizeans’ rights. A passage about indigenous peoples’ rights on the LSAT? Not exactly an un-Belize-able development.

*As an aside, I really wish I could have seen this passage — as a lifelong skateboarder, I have a lot of experience with this topic, since analyzing other skaters’ tricks in aesthetic terms is pretty much all we do. We assess the style with which they perform their tricks, their ‘fits, the spots they chose to skate at. There’s even an art historian and curator who runs a popular Instagram account where he analyzes skaters’ clips with the same exacting, and brutal, terms he would bring to bear upon work of art. It’s tough to imagine a passage more squarely in my (polyurethane) wheelhouse.

Logic Games

Finally, Logic Games, which colored pretty much everyone’s opinion of this exam. This was a hard logic games section, by all accounts. These games were time consuming and difficult, according to most people. Most of all, the third and fourth games.

The third game involved five art instillations, installed over the period of three months. So it’s like an overbooked ordering game, wherein some months will feature more than one art installation. But then there was another variable thrown in — whether the installations would be supervised or not — that necessitated the construction of another tier. So it sounds like it was an overbooked tiered ordered game, which is a rare — and difficult — combination.

The fourth game was a seldom-seen circular ordering game, last observed in 2003. You know, those games where a group of people are sitting around a circular table, where the last person is still next to the first person, making the game annoyingly complicated? In this version of that fun ditty, we had delegates and translators sitting around table, and it sounds like the game mostly involved figuring out whom each delegate or translator could sit between.

These two games, taken together, made a lot of people feel like the test went poorly. Games have a way of coloring your perception of a test, more than any other part of the LSAT. They’re the most memorable parts of the exam, and you typically know, as you’re doing a game, whether it’s going really well or really poorly. But you should also be aware that one or two games won’t necessarily have a devastating effect on your score. Two games may have as few as 11 or 12 questions between them. Which is just a little over 10% of a scored LSAT. Not a small chunk of the LSAT, to be sure, but they shouldn’t be the only things you think about when you assess your performance, when you’re deciding whether or not to cancel. Especially if you nail the other two games — which in this exam were about city workers and grouping players into departments at a store.

Final Thoughts

So this wasn’t a new LSAT, but that didn’t make it any less difficult for many test takers. If you were among those who felt great about it, take a well-deserved victory lap. If you feel like it didn’t go well, you still have a few options.

First, you may be considering whether to cancel your score. LSAC’s official cancellation policy can be read here. According to LSAC, you have until 11:59 pm EDT on the sixth day after the exam to cancel using your LSAC account. To translate that out of unintelligible bureaucratese for your poor, fried brain, you have until Sunday at 11:59 pm Eastern to cancel. Sleep on it. Heck, take the next few days to think it through. Before canceling, you should also be aware that nearly every law school will simply use your highest LSAT when constructing your academic index, or whatever calculation it uses to assess you as an applicant. Now, schools will see every score you got on the LSAT; however, the vast majority of schools won’t hold having multiple LSAT scores against you to a significant extent. For most test takers, our recommendation is to choose to receive your score, just on the chance that you’ll be happy enough to with the score that you don’t have to study for the next exam.

Second, LSAC announced a a new policy for July test takers who signed up for the September exam as well. For those test takers, LSAC is offering a full refund of the September registration fee if they decide they don’t need to take September test after receiving their July scores. To take advantage of this refund, you just need to email LSAC by August 17. Scores are due out on August 10, so you’ll have a week to make that decision. However, if you cancel your July score, you won’t be eligible for this refund.

So congratulations to all who finished this July LSAT, the brand new test that wasn’t at all new. We hope at the very least, you are enjoying a break from the LSAT. If you decide you need to take it again, we’ll be here to help.

Some of you may remember Jonny White from the post we wrote recently on his documentary film project called Welcome to Type 1. Jonny lives in Nova Scotia, Canada, and works as a lecturer in Media Psychology at Fielding Graduate University and at UCLA Extension. He's also an all-around diabetes advocate, diagnosed himself with type 1 at age 15. Most recently, he's been instrumental in launching a sweeping new international diabetes advocacy "task force" of sorts for young community leaders from all around the world. This group convened for the first time in early December at the World Diabetes Congress in Dubai (which I unfortunately was unable to attend - boo!). Jonny joins us today to introduce the new Young Leaders program, and share his impressions of this dynamite first meet-up:

It seemed like a simple idea and a good one: Invite Young Leaders from all over the world who are passionate about helping people with diabetes. Have them meet in Dubai during the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Conference. Bring in a faculty of experts to lead them. The objective was to have the Young Leaders go home inspired, connected, and with tricks up their sleeves to help lead their own (IDF member) diabetes organizations (like the Maltese Diabetes Association) in their home countries.

It seemed like a simple idea, but this is where the easy part ended. I was on faculty and flew in the day before the Young Leaders arrived to go over the schedule. The scheduled events—presentations, networking, sailing, group work, conference talks, and a night in the desert—went from 7:00am to midnight for 9 days. The topics ranged from cultural differences to the artificial pancreas to leadership to how media can help, with faculty from Brazil, Bermuda, Belgium, Canada, Mexico, Switzerland, UK, and USA. I remember thinking that these long days were stuffed with heavy content but that it might still be manageable, so long as there were no further complications.

Then 69 participants of different languages, colors, cultures, dress, levels of sociability, and ages (20-30) materialized. It was terribly exciting, but as I introduced myself to the Young Leaders I found that, one after another, either they didn't understand my accent or I didn't understand theirs and we stumbled through small-talk. I feared I had signed up for 9 days of those awful moments where I pretend to understand someone and smile. I cringed as Paul Madden (a veteran of the diabetes industry and former director of Camp Joslin) made the formal introductions in his rich Boston English. We pushed forward with the curriculum.

I spent the first two 15-hour days in tense anticipation of what would happen when the Young Leaders had to apply what they had learned in group-work. The energy was high and presentations ran overtime. The moment of truth came soon enough, though, and as I visited each of the multi-cultural roundtables, I was shocked. I learned that some of our participants came from countries where the health professionals didn't know how to use insulin properly, or where employers discriminate against people with diabetes, or where they had insufficient diabetes supplies to test their blood sugar more than once a week, or where people couldn't afford insulin. The language barriers were no match for the Young Leaders' desire to share issues relevant to generating adequate diabetes care in their home countries. My moment of relief came, then passed quickly as I kept listening and processing the magnitude of the global issues these Young Leaders were inheriting.

And yet, there was hope. Paul Madden's two favorite descriptions of the group ("Awesome!" and "Even More Awesome!") became catchphrases as the Young Leaders worked tirelessly with laser-focus. The Young Leaders (and their faculty) often continued getting to know each other after sessions wrapped up at midnight, and I couldn't believe how well we kept on the next day. It was on the fourth day, when the Young Leadersasked if they could skip the lunch buffet to keep working, that I realized I was witnessing something amazing.

In their home countries these Young Leaders have enough to do. They are medical students, dentists, architects, college students, athletes, or other types of working professionals with student loans. Yet they had taken time off, bought tickets to Dubai, paid their hotel, and were here working themselves to the bone in a hot conference room. They were laying it all on the line for something they believed in. Around this time, the faculty realized that they had given what they could and it was time to get out of the way. The Young Leaders created their own political structure, created a long-term plan, and elected leadership. We helped when asked.

But when the IDF conference started on the fifth day of the Young Leaders program I began to worry again. The diabetes epidemic statistics and the international discrepancies in health care are bad enough. In addition, like every multi-national organization that spans industries, the IDF deals with thorny political issues that would affect the Young Leaders. First, there's apathy or discord: Some of the IDF's national delegates (not Young Leaders)who were flown to Dubai and put up in the Ritz Carlton but chose not to attend IDF congress elections. Second, there's funding: In one of the big-room sessions Sir Michael Hirst, President Elect of IDF, debated Medical Professor John Yudkin's claim that allowing insulin companies to sponsor IDF hinders IDF's ability to provide cheap insulin in third world countries. Yet presenters are often sponsored by corporations and without these corporations the IDF might not exist. Would similar issues snag and tear the Young Leaders apart at the conference? More threatening still—would they tear them apart when Dubai is just a memory?

To the first question, I can tell you that during the conference the Young Leaders held strong, continued working together, and took an interest in the conference events to the extent that they were pulled into the spotlight repeatedly. The press and other conference-goers had heard the buzz about the Young Leaders and wanted more. On stage, the Young Leaders spoke with the natural clarity, precision, and passion that those of us over 30 try to fake. Their hope and dedication to the cause were electric and contagious. Faculty, sponsors, media, and even Sir Michael Hirst drank in the group's enthusiasm and gave it back in kind at the conference, in their workroom, and on a dance floor in the desert.

To the second question—whether the Young Leaders will disintegrate after Dubai—I can't tell you the future. I can, however, tell you that there is a new closed forum somewhere on the Internet that received hundreds of posts in the week following the IDF conference. I can tell you that some of it is IDF-related, some of it is diabetes-related, and some of it is the social glue that holds people together. I can tell you that it all builds on a good idea, and I can tell you that I'm not worried.

How IDF Young Leaders are chosen:

Young Leaders must be nominated by their IDF Member Association (e.g. the Diabetic Association of Pakistan, Azerbaijan Diabetes Society, etc.). Each Member Association should have heard about the program from their Regional Chair, however interested individuals can also let their IDF Member Associations know they are interested in the program.
