I was recently re-reading the scene in Resonant when, after the failed assassination attempt, Crayne first threatens to assault Rhaegar and then kisses his hair and looks directly at Jon. It was SO creepy it made me physically sick to my stomach. I hope we get a similar scene in Rescue AU because apparently Daemon didn't suffer enough. Of course Crayne wouldn't dare do anything to such a prized prisoner, but Daemon isn't about to know that. Especially since Daemon is less valuable and can be bullied more. I still sometimes remember with horror your words that Crane will cut off Daemon's hair and I can't help but imagine what else Crane's sick mind will come up with. Like holding Daemon and forcing him to watch his children be "tested by fire"? Putting Rhaegar to sleep next to him? Making him entertain him with stories otherwise Crayne will hurt Jon or Daemon? So many possibilities.
What makes Crayne such an effective killer is that he's very good at reading people, which makes him both good at charming people (thus disarming them in both senses) and at honing in on how best to threaten people to get what he wants.
Jon's initial reaction to the reward and Crayne's mention of pillow houses showed him that it was something that made Jon very alarmed. (Whereas most eight-year-old boys, at least highborn ones, probably don't quite know/understand what a pillow house even is.) So he immediately knew how to get under Jon's skin; especially because every interaction between them since almost the very beginning had been Jon trying to shield Raymar from him.
Some of it's also about control, especially the more powerful/"important" his victim(s) are, given the particulars of his own past/history. And House Targaryen, with its Doctrine of Exceptionalism (which Crayne originally dismissed as bullshit but then came to buy into), is the very pinnacle of power.
So you get moments like after the escape attempt, where Crayne is applying maximum pressure for control. And you also have his nightly pastime of terrifying Rhaegar with threats toward Jon, with an undertone of "keep me entertained or I'll entertain myself (hurting your brother)." And of course the creepy fascination with things that are unique to House Targaryen, like Raymar's coloring.
Crayne having the responsibility of keeping Daemon in line must be the biggest high (other than the promised reward). Threatening him at River Row, knife to his back, to get him to drug himself? An utter pleasure. Holding a knife to his neck while shaving him? Ditto. Daemon is such a proud person, he is perfect for Crayne's little power trips. And I doubt he could think of a better trophy than Daemon's hair.
It is a little more difficult to threaten Daemon quite the way he would like, since the Volantenes are so focused on the boys and their wellbeing. If he so much as sneezes on them, he gets a dirty look. It's painfully obvious that they're Daemon's weakness, so I'm sure that's frustrating for him. He has to be subtle with his threats.

Sayer's Revenge - @txmefxll
There were five Dark Signers: Roman Goodwin, Misty Tredwell, Carly Carmine, Kalin Kessler, and Devack. After Devack had been defeated by Leo and Luna's combined might, Greiger had returned as a Dark Signer. Dead and reborn.
Sylvia was there in the Spirit World with Luna, protecting her on her way to recover and free Ancient Fairy Dragon. When she appeared in the physical world, Yusei and Crow had been waiting for her, while Luna took her place at her brother's side.
The entire time, Sylvia had no idea what she was supposed to do. She merely followed everyone else, fretting helplessly while they did their best. When Greiger was reborn, Sylvia wanted to duel him, as was her right as a Signer, but Crow had beaten her to it. She nearly crashed out just trying to keep up with them.
Then everyone scattered. Jack fought that girl-- Carly, she remembered, who helped smuggle her out of her cell when Sayer wasn't looking and her friends were brainwashed. When had Carly died? Was it in Arcadia? She must've missed it after she dove from the balcony to save Sayer.
Why make me into a Signer if I'm going to be so useless?! she thought frustratedly, her hands clenched into cold, trembling fists at her side. Was she meant to just sit there and do nothing as her friends, the real Signers, fought so hard to protect everyone?!
When they arrived at an abandoned carnival, Sylvia, Trudge, Leo, and Luna had split up into two groups: Trudge and the twins searched for Akiza, while she and Yusei went to look for Mina. Saving Mina wasn't an issue; Sylvia had managed to find a rope and fashioned a lasso, hauling her up before the pit she was stuck in had gotten completely filled up with water and drowned her. But Yusei had heard something and briefly left to go check it out.
After Mina reunited with Trudge and the twins, Sylvia went looking for Yusei, because he was gone for too long, and she was getting worried.
"There!" Snow pointed. "It's Yusei!"
Sylvia hesitated. He was ambling like a zombie, and his Duel Disk was activated. Her mark burned fiercely in response to his presence, soaking a new layer of fresh blood into her glove-brace.
That's not Yusei.
She knew those eyes. Those were Liquid and Okita's eyes when they were forced to keep her captive in the Arcadia Movement. That... That must've been how Sylvia had looked in the finals of the Fortune Cup, when Yusei Turbo Dueled her and won.
Behind him, she saw a massive, glowing Enemy Controller, and the manic eyes of the man she once thought she could save.
Sayer.
He was headed right for Akiza, who was still dueling Misty. She had turned around, horrified. Her gaze flicked between him and Yusei, conflicted. "S-Sayer?!"
"Yusei!"
"Stop!"
"Sayer, you snake! What have you done?!" Trudge accused.
There was no time for this. He was going to interfere in Akiza's final duel. Yusei was hurting. Sayer was alive, because of her. This was Sylvia's fault.
She vaulted over the railing of the fire escape she had climbed up, not caring how the impact caused her whole body to tremble, and physically tackled Sayer as hard as she could, then she frantically grabbed his sword-wielding wrist like a rabid animal and chomped down on it.
Tumblr media
"Akiza!" she bellowed. "Focus on the duel! Don't you dare look back, y'hear me?!"
"Sylvia! But--"
"I mean it! We need you! We need the real Akiza Izinski! You know the truth now. So bear it! Bear it and fight back, because we're here for you!"
Sayer snarled. "Let go of me, you worm!"

in the ping universe, how common are anomalies percentage-wise?
im also just curious about the life of like the average non-superhero, like would a non-anomalous person have difficulty getting a job when someone with like superspeed would be way more efficient, or is it the opposite where someone with superspeed would apply and theyd be like "youre way overqualified go save the world instead please", how is it for like kids in school, is being anomalous cool or weird or does it depend on the culture/specific anomaly? (i just really like worldbuilding pslsjsj)
my rough numbers are that having an anomaly - any anomaly - is about as common as having red hair, 1-2% of the population. having an anomaly powerful enough to be considered for Keeping is about 1-2% of that. the overwhelming majority of anomalies are ATL-1s and 2s, with minor powers like a single poison gland on one wrist, or being able to breath through their skin underwater like a frog. small niche things, that arent powerful or versatile enough to be a hero or villain
these people are typically not regarded much differently from non-anomalies unless you have a fundie or other conservative yapping. they often arent even necessarily anti-peacekeeper themselves, their only experiences being every-6m check ins and a summer job they probably dont hate too much.
on average, you will get a couple hundred people per million who have a powerful anomaly capable of doing real feats, the ATL-4s and above. cognitohazards, anomalies whose power lay in manipulating the human mind, typically are used in-house by peacekeepers and so are prophetic or clairvoyant abilities like pattons (usually).
so that leaves enough for almost every burough and city in the us to have anywhere from 1-5 anomalous keepers assigned to it.
put short - there are so few powerful anomalies, and their rights so restricted, that the peacekeepers pretty much have a monopoly on their use as labor. for someone with superspeed to get hired as a courier, they have to do their time with the peacekeepers first
however, now you have the distaff problem - that the overwhelming majority of anomalous supervillains and their associated henchman are the result of the peacekeepers just fucking hemorrhaging staff and 'volunteers' because theyre so scummy.
its making up a problem so you can be the solution - peacekeepers suppress anomalies so an inevitable portion of them will defect and start causing issues, and then justifies that mistreatment by claiming it necessary to protect the world from supervillains, and by claiming that anomalies are inherently dangerous and need the peacekeepers to keep them in line

Though I see no world in which Carpenter performs any amount of femininity, I don't really consider her to be butch because for me butch is a gender identity beyond simply "masculine woman" and frankly I think Carpenter couldn't be fucked about all that. Hayward is butch though. The great tragedy of his ending is that Paige didn't have enough time to get her ass on estrogen

Am I kickstarting this week? It's the 21st here and if I don't do it now I will forget so... Here you go!
Theme 1 of Hayffie week is Forced Proximity so here have a snow storm in 12 post war book!verse.
A Bubble In Time
Effie had had a lot of preconceived notions about what living in Twelve with Haymitch would be like.
She had expected it to be difficult on a good day and properly awful on bad ones. She had thirteen years of experience sharing a penthouse, after all. The couple of months they had shared a room and then her apartment after the war somehow didn’t seem to count. She had only been half there in her mind and Haymitch had been walking on eggshells, desperate to take care of her in any way he could to assuage his guilt about what had happened to her during the war.
Or at least that was what she had thought.
She had run to Twelve because she had been out of options. Out of air, really. The only alternative she had been able to see at the time was of the more permanent nature and the thought of actually hurting herself had been tempting enough that it had properly scared her. She had jumped on a train and she had never looked back.
She had expected it to be difficult or awful.

Quality might be a bit ruined so just click on the pictures </3
I was conflicted on this. Because the music and the vibe remind me so much of the nomai, but the lyrics are the owlks spot on. A song about fear getting in the way of progress and how easy it is to hate the unknown. The first verse showing the prisoner overcoming said fear of the eye and releasing the signal, but being imprisoned by the rest. And the second verse showing solanum being afraid of the eye, but her clan all being happy about it. Eventually her managing to overcome than, and love the eye and her pilgrimage on the quantum moon
Solanum and the prisoner are parallel to eachother and I really love that actually. The owlks representing the lyrics, and the nomai representing the melody of this song.
I imagine that the nomai were all so happy with eachother and their lives, schools and small get together would be filled with them sharing any knowledge they had, while also singing and dancing and having fun. They'd mix the arts with science. I had so much fun drawing them too ::)
Next up: constellations, the song that started all of this

She whirled around to face him, her eyes narrowing. "Normal? You think this is normal? You ignoring the actual problem and acting like I’m overreacting every time I bring it up? God, you’re impossible." Wren groaned, her hands flying up in exasperation. "You’re unbelievable!" She stopped pacing, planting herself in front of him. "You know what? I’m done talking." Before Nolan could reply, Wren grabbed the hem of her shirt and yanked it up to flash him.

For the ship ask game--as thee preeminent Kel/Neal/Yuki scholar, I'm sooo curious what you think of Kel/Dom (feel free to compare to the OT3 if it makes this ask more fun to answer).
Ship it! Just in a way where I don't find it terribly interesting to write anything long for it.
What made you ship it? So the thing is, I'm pretty easy? If love interests are canon, especially in books, I'm generally pretty willing to go with it! (I realize this is very funny if you just read my post about The Tomb of Dragons ship, but there are always exceptions.) So when I first read this, and it became clear the series was leaning Dom-wards, I was happy with it! Dom's lovely, he and Kel have fun banter, they're compatible in interests and goals and life experience, and while there's an age gap it's not as egregious as some Pierce does. It's just a happy ship for me! They like each other!
What are your favorite things about the ship? I keep on accidentally answering the questions before I get to them, but, y'know, see above! I like that they're both commanders, but at different experience levels and scales. I like that they banter, and that she can have fun with him despite being a very serious person!
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? Mmm, not that I can think of? Again, Tortall fandom is not large.

"You're better off in solitary especially if the rumors are true. Rather have you alone than a bloodbath. No one likes the paperwork of dealing with injuries." @alphateamsfinest finally acknowledges Riddick instead of her report. "Why don't you tell me what you got caught for instead?"
Cold as Jill's words are, she's still willing to hear him out. A provocateur's smile spreads lips. "So," tipping his head this way and that, assessing her through the bars. "You are still in there somewhere."
His hands are cold from the shackles, flexing his fingers keeps his virulent blood moving. It's about all the gesturing he can do with them bound behind his back.
"Wasn't law enforcement that caught me," Riddick starts. "Ain't been inside a prison in years. Leaves me to wonder: where did they tell you I escaped from?" Equal parts amused and curious himself.

Fen’harel altars
More on these in my expanded Veilguard verse - they’re enchanted to function like encrypted walkie-talkies. They can be used to communicate statue-to-statue, but their default ‘channel’ goes to the big one in the Lighthouse. There’s probably an emergency ‘channel’ too that sends out a system-wide alert.
Once activated, you won’t hear a voice ringing out in the Lighthouse. It’s more a psychic link using the altar itself as a foci. If you know the right password/spell - very similar to the spirits in the ruins during Trespasser - you can answer the call.
Solas and the generals would be able to sense when someone was calling - like how Solas could sense the breaking of the wards he and Mythal put up around the blight. He can also use the big one to establish an open, direct channel to a specific altar out in the field and use it as a listening post at that specific location.
The original were very rudimentary. They were practical, quick to put together and hide away. They still exist (the below image is from Redemption), but the magic is less refined, to say nothing about the actual design of them. As the rebellion became less of a movement and more of an all out force to be reckoned with, and 'the Dread Wolf' became more than just a nickname, the altars grew to be more sophisticated.
