Talking about the Muse || Accepting!
send ⛈️ for a sadness headcanon
Tumblr media
Okay -- despite everything Nanu does to present himself as this lethargic, depressive amalgamation of bones and flesh who does not care for anyone or anything, he is - in fact - not as sad as he thinks he is. At least, not on a daily basis. As with most people, he has his ups and downs. But his specific low points are staggeringly horrible. Often he gets very vivid dreams about the past. Reliving that fateful day when the faller lost her life, the lives he’s ruined working for an organization with an agenda, his current circumstance as a Kahuna that no one asked for him to be, the existential dread he feels knowing that his soul is bound by the Gods, and becoming something less human.
Sometimes he just -- sits in the rain, staring at the sky. No words, just letting the raindrops fall without much purpose. He’s usually in a catatonic state, unmoving.

love the little tidbit that nanu doesn’t actually have an alolan native pokemon on his team. every kahuna has at least one pokemon that is from the alolan islands. and no, persian doesn’t count because meowth was brought from kanto to alola. this doesn’t change much, but does cement nanu as being much more foreign than everyone else.

🍬 for a family headcanon
Talking about the Muse || Accepting!
Tumblr media
Nanu is as detached from his biological family as denouncing his name for something else entirely. Came with the commitment with Interpol, he thought. His family’s surname was Kurosawa and they lived in a small town in Kanto that no longer exists, as it was assimilated into one of the larger cities’ expansions. His parents have been long gone, but he still has a few cousins with children who are still alive.
He’s never met those kids.

send 💣 for a stress headcanon
Tumblr media
Nanu has been trained to be calm under pressure, ever since he was in the police academy. In general though, he doesn’t get stressed very easily. In the rare times that he is, you can tell that he is because he will be much more active. Writing more manuscripts for his book, fiddling with his kendama, go to the Aether house and take care of the orphan kids, hell -- he even does police work. Shocking, really. All in all though -- stress is a non-issue for him for the most part.

Does Nanu know who the Masked Royal is? Just as important: does he let anyone else know if he knows?
Tumblr media
You know - I have to wonder just how many people actually don’t know who the Masked Royal is. The games make it seem like everyone knows except Burnet. I had this thought like - is it just like a known thing but people decide not to talk about it to save face with Kukui and protect Burnet or is it truly unknown??
Back to Nanu, he 100% knows who the Masked Royal is. 1, because it’s obvious, 2, he has a good eye from years of experience and 3, he is a secret fan. And whether or not it’s common knowledge, he hides everything about him anyway. No need for people to know that part of his life-

Trying to remember if i had a headcanon about nanu and his “relationship” with legendaries (outside of alola), since he was a high ranking officer during his time in interpol.
To what extent does interpol know/involved themselves with these legendaries? It’s likely that they didn’t meet them personally, but have some knowledge of their existence and whereabouts. Nanu himself is one of these people, so he’s less likely to feel that urgent danger these legendaries pose. ‘Course, he’s aware they are dangerous, he just doesn’t show fear.

Uhhh how closely did Nanu work on each of the villain cases bc like... the whole giovanni thing but I remember you saying he looked into team galactic but looker is who we see in general four so just... expand my brain if u will :) <3 <3 <3
💠 Is there a Headcanon about my muse you want to know more about? Ask away!
Tumblr media
I’d like to think 000 had some sort of influence between all of them (except  lysandre and rose because I think he had retired at this point), but the mileage varied.
Giovanni he was 100% involved with, in every team rocket case he could get his hands on. He did both recon and research when he was at his prime.
With Maxie/Archie... I think he did mostly research and maybe one recon mission (to be fair i think they were very good at keeping their operations pretty secretive until the whole shebang. So his involvement wasn’t much.)
With Cyrus, he was more in the background while Looker was at the forefront of the case.
With Ghetsis, he kept a watchful eye on team plasma, but not enough for him to be involved given that they were -- at first -- just really loud activists. When shit hit the fan, I think he was already on the other side of the world LOL
Lusamine... well they were friends at first but all the things that went down was after he quit interpol

I like the idea that, despite Nanu’s cynical (and sometimes depressing) outlook on life, his soul literally bound to the islands, and his eternal servitude to the Alolan people, the Kahuna eventually accepts it. Considering that he made the decision to become Kahuna during a very low point of his life, of course he would have some sort of regrets. Yet, he stayed. He persisted. If it weren’t for that fact, I’d say Nanu would’ve hated his job.
Even though he complains, I think that he does like his job. It lets him meet new trainers with the large potential. He can walk anywhere on the island, even the secluded spots where the tourists and locals can’t touch, he practically lives in a sanctuary. Every region has its own problems, his just involved inter-dimensional travel.
But he’s made a lot of new connections, most of which he didn’t know he was capable of having (since he really only had one or two people in Interpol and even less when he was a police officer back in Kanto). Nanu almost has pride in having that. Sure, they aren’t the best bunch of people in the world, but they are still his friends, his allies.
It keeps him living.

HEADCANON: You might think the population of Meowths in Nanu’s police station are his, but they’re actually strays that he takes care of (make sure that they get their shots and everything else). Most of the cats in his station come and go, and some just like to hang out with the old man. His police station is almost like a shelter for the kitties. If you ask Nanu, he’ll tell you that some of these felines are up for adoption, so long as you’re a responsible trainer and promise to love them for all their lives.

nanu doesn’t have to voice his opinion to anyone about dark types
he already knows that they already have a bad rep in the pokemon world, but that won’t stop him from caring and loving them.

Back to Alola lorebuilding, thinking about the extent of a Tapu’s connection with their Kahuna. I mentioned that the Kahunas were linked to their islands and can’t leave the region for large amounts of time. The Tapus are also bound to their Kahunas, as they are able to sense their mood or whether they are in any harm. So if you injure a Kahuna, the respective Tapu can feel it. While it isn’t pain that they feel, they can sense pressure coming from them, which urges them to aid their Kahuna however they can. Conversely, if a Tapu is hurt, the Kahuna can feel it as well.

I like that Nanu has the potential to be a corrupt policeman/interpol agent, especially with how my narrative of his story went.
Gets screwed up several times in his youth because he was reckless as a police officer
Left Interpol on really bad terms and came to resent that organization for being corrupt
Lets a bunch of teenagers do minor crimes and take over an entire abandoned town
There’s SO MUCH evidence stacked with him being corrupt, but there was one factor that kept himself (relatively) on the moral good side -- his heart. His connections with Acerola and the orphans from Aether House really had an impact on the jaded Zeroes ten years ago. He still believes there is good in the world, despite he decides to present himself.

While Nanu can have a silver tongue, there are only a few circumstances in when he would use it. The Kahuna for the most part is a reclusive person, as he tends to avoid idle conversation as much as he can. However, he is careful when he does so, as he tries to weasel his way out by either making excuses or lies. For the most part, he is rather calm and chill when he speaks with people.
The times where he lets his entire personality out is when he is battling or speaking to someone he actively dislikes. For example in the anime, Nanu mostly avoids speaking with people by giving them lies, but when he battles Ash, he lets constant jabs in order to make his opponent angry. But he isn’t rude for rude’s sake. He doesn’t antagonize people until they antagonize him.
As seen with him in the games (masters included), he’s a very chill guy who just wants to be alone with his cats, and occasionally talk to people when needed.
