The first folk tune of this project! I happen to love the Ариэль version the best - there's such a quaint charm to it, it's damn catchy, not to mention it was the second version of this song I'd ever heard - but there are countless variations of 'Порушка-Параня' (or sometimes known as 'Я за то люблю') that you can choose from. Here's a selection:

I'm also somewhat certain that Отава Ё's (Otava Yo) 'Про Ивана Groove' ('About Ivan Groove') is an adaptation of this song, or at least is paying homage to it. But I'm not 100% sure. I link to it nonetheless as reference, and also because this band is awesome, even though I won't have much time to talk about them during this project 😭 Too modern for my time period, I'm afraid!

Finally, here's a 1983 live performance of Ариэль's cover. This was during the band's heyday, and the performance and staging is a good example of what Soviet folk-pop (or really; a lot of sanctioned pop music at the time) used to look like. There will be another Ариэль song featured in this series soon. In that post, and probably a couple before it, I'll go further into the history of this band and the type of ensemble they embodied in the USSR.

Скачала ещё одно приложение, которое называется Истории другого мира, потому что там ивент что-то типа алмазной лихорадки. Зашла первым делом в историю "Легенды Коралин-Бэй" потому что там сеттинг русалки.

У нас тут гг, которая учится в выпускном классе, у неё есть лучшая подружка, с которой они постоянно ищут приключения на пятую точку и она живёт с двумя своими тетушками (при чём я не поняла они пара или сёстры) в роскошном и очень уютном доме прямо на побережье.

А вот и моя девочка, которую я назвала Ариэль (ну так, а как иначе, если там про русалок?). Вот такими аутфитами я уже успела разжиться. Раз всё на халяву, я себе ни в чём не отказывала 😆

А ещё у Ариэль есть секси кузен, который, на сколько я поняла, является ещё и фаворитом. В общем в первой же серии я получила с ним мега горячую кат-сцену. Отнош��ния с ним вряд ли возьму, у него синдром старшего брата, но чисто пофлиртовать вполне можно.

Personal translation project for 2025

Now this is something I've been working on since New Year! For the past few years I've largely been translating for work, or for academic reasons. I just haven't had the chance to work on more personal interests, but this year, I've made the decision to indulge a little.

This is a Russian-English project. From tomorrow, and every Tuesday for the rest of the year, I'll do a musical showcase: every week I'm going to translate a song, mostly from my favourite musical period (1980s USSR), and post it here for others to see. Posts may include biographical notes about the musicians or interesting facts about the composition, as I'd like to focus on lesser-known songs, and it may be difficult to find context for them in English elsewhere. If you're a native/C1-C2 level speaker and don't find the time period too old-fashioned (😂), I'd also love to hear your thoughts on my efforts!

I currently have four posts queued up from January. They'll be posted this month, February's translations will go up on March, and so on. Not sure if December's entries will go up twice per week, or if this project will have to finish on Jan 2026, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. Translations are scheduled for 5:30pm GMT. I like synthpop and songs about technology. Let's listen to some music together. 🥰

some of common genders neutral second names that most my trans friends used are женя/jenia and саша/sasha (exactly these diminutive forms in the docs) if you wanna keep it russian

but it’s ok to choose english ones (teddy, charlie, robin, tony, etc) if you give excuse of “artistic nickname”. lots of local but non-russian names are kinda gender neutral, at least to russian ear, like алтын/altun, ариэль/ariel, фарах/farah, etc.

Yeah, Женя and Саша make sense. Too bad there are very few of those names in Russian, that work as both male and female names (and never in full forms).

I saw this post on tumblr the other day, a facebook thread full of (US) girls named with guys names like Owen or Bryce. Try to imagine a Russian woman named Mikhail! Or Dmitry!

Мне понравилось что всю книгу проиллюстрировали и можно было прочитать про все три легенды о подводном царстве Коралин-Бэй. Давали очень красивые катки и я конечно же их поскринила.

Чуть позже Ариэль заметила очаровательного незнакомца, будто сбежавшего из истории клуба романтики Эдемов сад 😆

Такой красавчик, к тому же ещё и читать умеет и одевается модно 😍 не хватает ему только пирсинга в пупке. Моя гг за ним очень кринжово следила, а чуть позже они познакомились и внезапно его зовут Нэмо (очень странная отсылка и мне кажется что он тоже может быть мербоем).

В общем с фаворитом я точно определилась!
