“You’re not a thing. You have soul.”
The Hare from «My Sweet Monster», Russian animated movie from 2021 (probably, spoiler!).
Not something I would strongly recommend as outstanding product of modern Russian animation, but quite representative of strengths of it. 50/50.
Typical eclectic grab bag of influences: something from Disney (prince subplot is reminiscent of Frozen, but with different twist), something from Miyazaki – «Laputa» and «Mononoke Hime» specifically (mystical life-giving source in the middle of forest, a subject of hunt, and the beast that protects forest, horned and fluorescently illuminated), rebellious princess, and, suddenly, the kingdom adorned with art deco aesthetic (among the woods). Also, there is, along with ecological issue (very schematic), an ethical issue of use of magic/technology to reform nature (which, given the magic source *is* a part of nature here, is a little muddy).
Good points: it has completely original story instead of another rehash/mix of well-known fairy tales (which, for some reason, is a blueprint of many current animated projects), even though it uses familiar tropes (Beauty & The Beast as main influence, though the movie seems to borrow from «Shrek» in that regard), and all seemingly random elements (like robots and talking hare) turn to be tied to main conflict rather than being simple supplementary padding. The characters themselves aren’t very deep or having interesting individualities, but they’re all serving plot in some way.
So, this is not exactly strongest movie in the sense of dramaturgy, and somehow imitative one, but easy on the eyes, mildly interesting, and worth of one viewing.
