When Luz became aware of the spotty memories of this Other Luz, she was still… emotionally compromised. The fact that the Other Luz had her own Other Amity, whom Other Luz was admiring from afar… well, that didn’t help things. It kind of stung, actually, since Luz knew they’d end up together eventually, even though her own Amity had gone home now. Her emotions were a swirling mess, and it made trying to locate Other Luz… hard. And Luz found herself stalling despite knowing she shouldn’t.
Meanwhile, she knew that Other Luz was absolutely, definitely fading. She’d come across her double a few times, each time not managing to catch her, and each time finding that her double was more and more not in her right mind. And the pressing threat of death–actual death, for both of them–finally pushed Luz into moving a little more purposefully. But by then, Other Luz had deteriorated even further, and was disoriented and acting rather crazy, even by Luz standards.
After losing track of her, again, Luz kinda collapsed onto the ground, sitting first and then laying back, staring at the sky with a disheartened wrinkle in her brow.

She wasn’t surprised, to find her double had made her way to the sea. If she were anything like Tressa herself, then no wonder -- if she was hoping for a way out from her troubles, then no wonder. It makes her heart ache, if she’s at all honest. The name of this place, the ‘Swirling Gulf’, sounded wild and dangerous, as if it could swallow you whole. But after the difficulty trying to get inside the place, eventually claiming to be a tourist, Tressa quickly realised it had become a home to the wealthy. A controlled place, wasn’t it? Rare, wonderful, magnificent... but heavily cultivated, all the same.
She wondered if this was what the other her was looking for. She knows, deep down, that it isn’t. That she would have gone to the most daring place she could find.
Tumblr media
Asking around, the locals seemed to peg that moniker to a place called the shipyard -- and respond with utter horror whenever she asked for directions. Apparently, it wasn’t exactly a favourable place, haunted with ghosts and the target of many uncomfortable rumours. Largely untouched by the settlers of this place. It was a place likely to hold long forgotten treasure, if you asked Tressa -- the place she was sure her other self had gone searching.
There was no point waiting -- no point losing any more time. Getting to this point had already taken long enough, and the time for the both of them was running out. Standing before the ship with the protective gear she’d rented, she can understand why others avoid the place. It was eerie, a place she would usually bypass out of respect for the loss that had happened here. But if a reckless girl didn’t want to be found... why ever would she go anywhere else?
The waters are almost silent, as she passes through them, aside for the creaking of the ship’s parts and the sounds of the wildlife passing through -- small fish, mainly, but sometimes Tressa thought she saw something else moving in the dark waters. Whenever she pursued the movement, though, hoping to find the girl she was looking for -- there was nothing to be found. A chill runs down her spine. She does not like ghosts, the last person to go seeking them out, whatever her curious reputation. Her other self, though, had to be the same way. Leaving her alone out here with her worst nightmare... aside from not being an option, it just wasn’t her style.
She swims deeper.
Eventually, she finds something unlike the depths of the sea -- a shimmering beam of light. The surface? A cavern, perhaps? Unlikely, but a desperate girl could have tried it, and a curious one can hardly stop herself from seeing what the source was, swimming through a splintered hole in the ship’s ceiling and into a small room. A cursory glance tells her it was likely once the captain’s cabin. Her body tells her that it is partially filled with water, and partially with air -- a triangular, diagonal shaft of the sea. It shouldn’t be possible, but the place already betrays all reason. The water shifts and seems to move, as if the ghosts here were still trying to breathe.
In the pocket, though, is a girl -- equipment half removed, apparently struggling with her oxygen tank. It’s easy to see her, then. It’s easy to see that this girl had the same face as her own.
“Tressa...”
Tumblr media
She assumes the other girl uses the same name -- and she assumes right. Her double flinches, hands tensing around the tank, before her eyes flicker around the cabin for an exit. Tressa was over the only one, of course -- and she could imagine in such a precarious situation, it must seem dangerous to move. She is no stranger to danger, but she has never desired to throw away her life. The shaking of the girl’s limbs tells Tressa that she isn’t the only version of herself, with such an earnest desire to live.
She takes in a deep gulp of air. “Are you alright? What’s wrong with your tank?”
“I’ll be fine, if you go. I can handle it... I can handle it myself!”
“Really...?” She peers closer at it, but the girl’s own demeanour is easy enough to read. “How long have you been down here? Are you running out?”
“Longer than you’re supposed to use these things.” The girl frowns, indignant. “You want to replace me, don’t you? Why don’t you just let me drown out here?”
She shakes her head. “Hey, I’m you. You’re me. I wouldn’t drown anyone. And you wouldn’t want to drown me, right? This situation is way too creepy! Like something you’d tell your kids to make them behave. I’m not falling for it... not like that.”
“Like that?” But there’s a recognition in the other her’s eyes, a recognition that gives Tressa hope. So her double wasn’t out to kill her, whatever scary stories would say. Her double... was herself. Tressa. “Sure. I don’t want to kill anyone. But... you can’t just take my place. There can’t just be two of us!”
“I wish there could be. I’ve always wanted to be friends with myself. Then things would never get lonely.” She pauses, the word striking something in her, before she turns to look her double in the eye. Softly pushing herself up towards pocket of air, brushing herself up against her mirror, she tugs her breathing equipment from her face. “Tressa... you’re lonely, aren’t you?”
She flinches again, seeming to shy away. And then -- a pout, an avoidance of the eyes -- almost childish, almost familiar. “How would you know? I’ve never met you in my life! You dont know anything about who I am!”
“Maybe not. But... I’ve been lonely, too. Really lonely. Not that there wasn’t anyone I could turn to, or laugh with... but... there wasn’t anyone who understood me. I didn’t just want to work in my parents’ store, even if I loved them so much... that kind of day to day... it just isn’t living, it just isn’t being me!” Tressa stops, smiling softly, before moving to meet the others’ gaze. “That kind of thing... no matter how many people are around you... it’s lonely. It’s like you’re the only person who’s like that, like you couldn’t ever explain it, or make someone understand. I think maybe that’s something that happens, when you’re... Tressa.”
The other girl crumples. Reaches for her eyes, only visibly wavering as her head is out of the water. “You really are me. I couldn’t tell that to anyone.”
Tressa smiles. “Me neither.”
Tumblr media
There’s a pause. Tressa watches herself -- the girl’s face changing, becoming calmer, but more melancholy as each moment passes. “Even so... even if you know how it feels.” She clutches her chest. “There still can’t be two of us. There isn’t a place where we aren’t lonely, is there? We can’t turn to each other. I have to do things myself!”
“Yeah... you do. There isn’t any point, if it isn’t you. Right?”
She pauses. It’s uncanny to her -- it must be, to her too. “Right.”
“I know that too. But... you don’t have to be lonely forever. I promise. I know that, since I’m... not lonely anymore. But someone tried to help me, so we could both exist. There can be two of us. There should be. If you trust me, Tressa.”
A moment of hesitation. “I don’t know if I should.” Followed by a sigh -- slightly impish, hopeful, asking for a sign. “But I don’t have any other ideas.”
If she were honest -- if she were honest, Tressa wasn’t sure either. To trust the word of a mysterious voice she’d never heard before, someone who was likely in charge of this place, perhaps responsible for the whole incident? Yet if Tressa was known for something, it was seeing the good in even the most unexpected things. Perhaps she was gullible. Perhaps it would backfire on her -- perhaps this time would be the time. But... it was worth a try.
For the sake of a girl, just like her, who had been so terribly lonely. It was worth a try.
She pulls out her phone, hopefully shaking water from the thing before lighting up the screen. Thankfully, it seemed to be either waterproof, or delaying breaking for now. “Right now, you’re... going to die. You feel weird, don’t you? It’s why you ran away. But, someone told me that there’s a way to help. So I had to look for you.” She taps the app that they were directed to, showing her double the screen. “They said that you can go into another world... a parallel one. And there all of the people who got caught up in this mess can stay alive, and live how they wanted to.”
She pauses. It all sounded even weirder aloud. Looking at the other girl, Tressa smiles sheepishly, for the first time looking a little worried. “It sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it...? Apparently the stranger who offered this way out is going against the rules. I’m not sure I like following orders from someone I can’t even see, but... even worse, I can’t just watch this happen.”
Tumblr media
She meets the other’s eyes, her smile softening. “It’s your choice, though. I can’t decide who you trust... or how you want to live.” Falling silent, she watches her other self’s face, eyes falling to the phone. She reaches out her hand to touch it, making Tressa yelp, pulling it back -- “If you touch it with the app open, you’ll just go right there! I don’t want you to get pushed into it if you aren’t ready, you know...”
Her double’s hand hovers in the air. She presses her lips together. “I am dying... aren’t I? It isn’t something I really wanted to think about... really, I’m too young for something like that... I always thought I still had so much time, to do what I wanted to do.” Her eyes clouding over, she looks down, Tressa’s gaze still on her. “But I don’t want to give up. Dying all alone down here... that’s the last way I want to go!”
A smile finally surfaces on the double’s face. “Maybe it will go wrong. Maybe it’s crazy. I’m crazy, for even listening to you, but... a lot of things could go wrong anywhere. I’m tired of this world. Of sitting behind a counter, dreaming of the day where I can run away... where fortune finally blows in my direction... I’m tired of only dreaming!”
She pauses, as if short of breath, meeting Tressa’s eyes. She smiles back. With a smaller smile, her double tucks her hair -- wet and dripping -- behind one ear. “Just tell me one thing. You said... you used to feel lonely. How was it that you changed...?”
“Ehehe...” Holding out the phone, for her other self to touch, her face glows warmly. “I followed my heart. I did what I wanted to do. Even if it was scary, even if it was reckless.” Lifting up her free hand to meet her double’s, clasping her hand in hers, she nods in confirmation -- reassurance. “Thank you... for letting me meet you, Tressa. Something tells me you’re gonna be just fine.”
The girl nods. Closes her eyes. Before reaching to touch the screen.

Embers of Fate [Subversion part 2]
Words: 1056
Lailah was, suffice to say, a little bit confused.
She had woken up in a place only just vaguely familiar to her, immediately being told that something horrible had happened by the item- a phone, her memory supplied her with- on her nightstand. She had no real context of when she’d arrived here (again) and how she’d arrived here (again), but she supposed now wouldn’t be the best time to ask those questions. Rather, it would be a better thing to ask how to help this person, who was supposedly ill.
According to this phone, the other Lailah was still within the city. There was nothing indicating she had even left the sector, in fact- she too was still in Archimedes, so apparently she hadn’t been the sort to run.
However, while Lailah could say there was a familiarity to this… setting, and even to some of the faces she passed by, she couldn’t say she quite remembered here. She did, but didn’t- odd. It was all very odd. Who was she to discuss oddity, though? After all, she was visible here, an oddity of itself! But that at least was a welcome one, to know that she could talk to more than just the shepherd and his squires.
Her searching through the ward was more of a brisk walk through it- she in truth wasn’t terribly sure where she should be going or where this other her would be, so it was best to familiarize herself with the area. It didn’t seem like her double was moving at all, or at least the app wasn’t telling her as much- which was for the best. That seemed good.
Eventually, her walking led her away from the cobbled streets and out to a quieter area. Delicate flowers lined the path, bringing a smile to her face- it was some place she was sure would’ve been nice to visit with Sorey and the others. And perhaps she could- the vague recollections that seemed to be getting a little clearer made her believe her friends and companions could be here.
“Oh!
A gasp escaped her lips as she looked to the end of the path, a young woman looking the same as her (although dressed differently) standing and staring out towards the sea, hair waving in the breeze. This had to be her double, the other Lailah- she could sense the hints of anxiety in the air like buddings of malevolence, but it was finding no hold in her heart.
“This place is… beautiful, don’t you think?” An unexpected question from her other, still turned to face away from the seraph. Her voice was quiet enough that it was almost lost to the wind- but Lailah had spent many years listening in to the whispered prayers of those in Ladylake. It wasn’t terribly hard for her to hear, not with a little focus. “It’s called Filotimo here- savior’s respite. Beautiful, but… tragic.”
The sound of waves crashing against the cliffs below washed away the sound of words, the only thing left to disturb the silence hanging over them being the sounds of birds and sea. Lailah could understand the implications- a place like this, a name like that… it would not be the first time she’d known of a place used in human sacrifice.
“Yes… tragic indeed. Why are you here, then?”
“I’m not quite sure, to be honest. I suppose I wanted to be… away from people. I may be from a city, but it can still be overwhelming at times. Do you understand?”
Her double turned to face her now, and Lailah smiled with a shake of her head.
“That may be a difficult question for me to answer. It is not easy to be in places with large amounts of humans, at times- I am not like you, although I suppose you may have gathered that already.” Her double nodded, a light smile on her face as Lailah continued. “Human emotion- be they good or bad- have the capacity to impact my health, and the health of those like me.”
“Then, wouldn’t it be best to live away from humans? If they could cause you harm so easily.”
“Perhaps… and that is what some of my kind do. But I believe, even if they have capacity for cruelty and hatred, they have an even greater potential for kindness and growth. A human being may not have magic- but they have the power to change who they are, something that differs from us seraphim. And I love that potential- the potential of a second chance.”
“I see.” Her double paused for a moment, bringing a finger to her lip, before smiling widely. “You’re the sort of person I’d hoped another me might be. I can’t say that I fully understand exactly what you are- but had things gone differently, I would’ve liked to talk more with you.”
“And I, you.”
“It would be best not to delay much longer, correct? I’ve heard talk of things- I’ll admit, half of me wants to run away at this very moment.”
“Yes, likely for the best then. It was nice to meet you- farewell.”
She smiled as she held her phone out to the other Lailah, watching as she faded into the air before holding the device close to her chest. There were thoughts, feelings, emotions that lingered- plenty of things she was certain she would need time to sort through, but she would have time. She always had the time to do so, now would not be any different from the rest.
Had things worked out differently, it would’ve been quite fun to get to know the other her, she was certain. Had she been human, she wondered what her life might’ve been like- but something like that was impossible to comprehend for a seraph who had lived as long as she had, who had seen as much as she had.
Where one adventure ends, another would begin.
There was a lot she had to figure out now, for certain, and she would in time. But now it was time for her to find her way back to the city proper- her other had been calm, but it was possible that others may not be as lucky. If she could help some calm down, then that would be wonderful.

...what’s going on?
subversion pt 2 drabble word count: 1236
content warning for violence!
The only person who knew Leia better than anyone else was none other than herself.
There was too much on the young woman’s mind. Where in the world was she, exactly? There was a clone of her running around, infected with…some kind of virus, that will make her more prone to attacking the longer it goes on? If her clone dies- then  she dies, too? God, she didn’t know how to process anything.
For the past week now, it seemed that all Leia could do was search around the city frantically, trying her hardest to track down the woman who shared her same face.
Her clone, for all she knew, had the same mannerisms and the same thought process she had. Right? The only thing that’s different is how they grew up. At least, that’s what she thinks. She actually doesn’t know, and part of her doesn’t exactly care to find out. There was only one thing that Leia was focused on.
Find her.
Before anybody else can.
Before whatever virus is inside of her causes her to snap and she ends up attacking, only to end up dead, herself.
Because if there’s one thing that Leia knows about herself than anything else- it’s that she wants to live. She’s sure that her clone wants nothing more than the same, too. She doesn’t know the life that her clone lived - or what she believes she  lived, but it didn’t matter to her. All she knows is, if her clone bumps into the wrong person, then she will turn up dead.
She has to make sure that she doesn’t.
… .. … …
When she spots her, it almost feels as though she’s hallucinating. Leia wanders, her steps quick as she walks with her eyes practically peeled wide open. She sees a woman in the far distance, her long black hair tied up in two pigtails - frantically running past everyone and begging them to leave her alone. She hears the fear in her voice, even from a distance - but it’s not just her frantic and panicked voice that catches her attention.
It’s the fact that it’s her voice that lets her know she’s finally found her.
Leia doesn’t have any time to waste.
She’s quick in her steps. She rushes towards the sight of her clone, pushing away people hard to get them out of her way. She mumbles quick apologies, not really caring if they couldn’t hear her or not - and she chases the woman down, the sound of her heels clacking behind her.
It seems that the heels are enough to capture the attention of her clone, as she begins to run faster at the sound of it.
Ugh- curse her for being so afraid.
That had to be the one trait that they had to share, right?
“Leave me alone!” the clone shouts, as she reaches down below her and grabs a rock that she just happens to run by. She chucks it behind her, directly at Leia- and it’s no surprise that Leia can see it coming from a mile away.
With a groan, Leia holds out her hand, allowing for a crystal to form in her hand. She expects a small blade to be created - big enough to throw towards her clone with intent to stop her clone - but a small ball, made of fucking pink salt is created instead. She scowls she the sight of it, but she doesn’t have the time to question it now. As hard as she can, Leia chucks it towards the back of her clone’s head as hard as she can, and to her surprise - she doesn’t see it coming.
Her clone panics- letting out a visceral cry at the impact. However, she keeps running, begging for Leia to stop and to leave her alone.
But she doesn’t.
The faster she runs, the more angry Leia gets. She creates small crystal balls one after the other, throwing them with more and more force at the back of her clone’s head.
“Stop running!” Leia shouts.
At the very least- her clone starts to slow down. She’s still fast, and she’s still able to outspeed her just a little bit - but at the very least, Leia can now catch up to her enough to the point where if she reaches her hand out, she can grab her clone by one of her pigtails and pulls her back.
So that’s exactly what she does.
Leia grabs her clone by the back of her hair, pulling her back to move closer to her. She hears her cry out in pain as she’s pulled back, and something in the pits of her stomach stirs, not sitting right with her. But she’s searched this long, and this hard for her - she can’t stop here. Not now.
She notices her clone finally avert her gaze, so she can look over her shoulder just enough to see her.
Her eyes widened.
“...Why– Why do you look like me?” The clone asks, and Leia tightens her grip against her hair.
“Shut up.” Leia says, holding her clone in place as best she can. She feels her struggle, but she doesn’t care. “You’re lucky that of all the people who caught up to you- it was me. Anyone else, you could have died. Is that what you wanted?”
The clone’s eyes falter for a bit - but soon, she nods.
“...No.”
“Then let  me do this. If you had died, then I would have, too.”
The clone doesn’t say anything for a moment. Let her– let her do what? Her heart pounds against her chest, and frantically, she shakes her head. “Do– Do what-!? What are you talking about? Let me go!”
Her struggling and pleading of letting her go only grows stronger, and Leia only grows more frustrated. She didn’t know exactly what she was supposed to be doing. What this place was - and why she was thrust into something like this upon waking up for the first time in this city.
“I DON’T KNOW!”
Leia finally snaps. A lot quicker than she intended for, and she tightens her grip on the back of her clone’s head. She pushes her clone forward, directly towards the first wall she sees in sight, and slams her head hard against it. Hard enough to cause the woman in her grip to go limp, but not hard enough to kill her.
She drops her clone to the floor, looking over her body for a second. She’s still alive, her breath light - but she’s still alive.
God, her head is pounding.
She pulls her phone out, opening up the right application to seal her clone away. Away into a world where she’ll be safe.
(she hopes.)
She watches, as her clone slowly fades - and the beeping of her phone lets her know that the process is done. For a moment, Leia only stands where the two previously stood. Part of her feels bad– Most of her feels bad, actually-
She feels bad.
... ...
Leia allows herself to drop to her knees, staring at her phone in silence. She stares at the message, confirming that the sealing is complete. She grips the phone tightly, her bright, pink eyes staring down at it with a look of…
Of fear.
Confusion.
Exhaustion.
“I hope… that at the very least. They’re right. And that you’ll be happy. ...”
“...”
“I’m sorry.”

DEN OF GEEK CRITICS PICKS
Django Unchained
The second of Quentin Tarantino’s revisionist history lessons, Django Unchained is a provocative, post-modern Western film that mixes the widescreen sensibilities of Sergio Leone with Tarantino’s own gonzo impulses to create something hyper-violent, subversively funny, and more than a bit uncomfortable. Jamie Foxx stars as a slave freed by a German bounty hunter played by Christoph Waltz. Waltz won an Oscar for his performance as the kind German that takes in the stoic but savvy Django as his partner. Together, they travel the pre-Civil War South, killing slavers and savage men. Eventually, they embark on a more personal mission, as Django intends to free his beloved wife from a sadistic plantation owner played by a scenery-chewing Leonardo DiCaprio. With anachronistic needle-drops, hands-over-eyes horrors, and more blood than a donation bank, Django Unchained is an epic, entertaining revenge fantasy for the ages.
Silver Linings Playbook
From director David O. Russell, Silver Linings Playbook is a screwball romantic comedy for the modern age. Despite inviting, yet livewire lead performances from Jennifer Lawerence and Bradley Cooper, Silver Linings Playbook really shines as an ensemble: Robert DeNiro, Jackie Weaver, Chris Tucker and Anupam Kher bring fully-realized characters to life in just a handful of scenes. Based on Matthew Quick’s novel of the same name, Silver Linings Playbook finds Bradley Cooper as a man who has been released from a psychiatric hospital a bit too soon. He’s frantically trying to prove that he’s bettered himself in an effort to win back his wife, but when he meets the equally unstable and filterless character played by Jennifer Lawerence, unusual sparks fly. Combining the familiar tropes of a sports film with unorthodox romantic leads, Silver Linings Playbook is a crowd-pleasing watch that creates harmony out of dysfunction.
Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations
It never mattered where Anthony Bourdain was going, we just wanted to be along for the ride. We lost the soulful, iconoclastic bad-boy of the culinary world far too soon, but he left behind a treasure trove of rewarding travelogues that tackled culture, social dynamics, and most importantly, food. Whether he was weighing in on a world-famous culinary hotspot or peeling back the curtain on a hole-in-wall gem, Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations was always thoughtful, fearless, and never less than authentic. It’s the rare show that is as educational as it is entertaining, hosted by a candid host who knew how to travel, knew where to eat, but most crucially, knew how to connect with people. Reality TV doesn’t get realer than this.
Halloween III: Season of the Witch
Following the mind-boggling success of the original Halloween, director John Carpenter had a clever idea. Instead of churning out sequels starring Michael Meyers, Halloween would become an anthology series, with each new film telling a spooky tale centered on the October holiday. The concept was inevitably scrapped, but Halloween III: Season of the Witch suggests that maybe Carpenter and co. should have stuck to their guns. Taking inspiration from Invasion of the Body Snatchers and working off a concept that Carpenter described as  “witchcraft meets the computer age,” Halloween III: Season of the Witch finds a doctor and the daughter of a toy maker trying to uncover the horrifying truth behind the town of Santa Mara, home to Silver Shamrock, the world’s largest manufacturer of Halloween masks. Intelligent, surprising, and disturbing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch is due for a critical reevaluation that heralds it as one of the most ambitious horror movies of the ‘80s
Clerks II
With the recent announcement that Clerks III has started production, it’s the perfect time to revisit Kevin Smith’s first-sequel to his independent film phenomenon, Clerks. Clerks II picks up with our titular clerks Dante and Randall 10 years after the events of the first film. The Quick Stop has gone up in flames and been replaced with a Mooby’s fast food restaurant. Dante and Randall toil the day away with their sheltered co-worker Elias and too-cool for minimum wage manager Becky. While the film tackles adult male friendships and middle age complacency, it’s main appeal is still sitting around, shooting the shit with your pals and listening to their expletive-filled rants about Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, or whatever pop culture fascination that they’re hung up on. Come for the surprisingly poignant story about Dante deciding to leave his friend behind, stay for Jay, Silent Bob, and a donkey.

[SUBVERSION PART 2: Zaveid finds his double. It’s uneventful.] Time: Midnight. Location: Golden Ward. Warnings: Alcohol, alcoholism mentions, death mentions, suicide ideation Words: 636
Tumblr media
> It doesn’t seem to matter the form he takes, the memories he has, or what’s afflicting him, one thing about Zaveid never changes: he doesn’t run.
The seraph’s phone leads him to a rocky outcropping near the beach, waves lapping at the stones that sit beneath his target. It’s himself, waiting, still wearing his work uniform, looking out over the ocean.
“Took you long enough,” says his double, sighing, not even glancing in his direction. “It’s not like me to keep someone waiting.”
“So what now?” The seraph asks the human, hopping up beside him. “We fight this out? Or are you going quietly?”
“You and I both know I couldn’t take you in a fight. I know my limits.”
     “So, what’s your plan?”
The bartender lets out a sigh, hanging his head. “Let whatever this is run its course. What else is there?”
The seraph flips out his phone, waving the screen at the other. “You could go quietly. Keep living. It’s your life, yeah?”
“You really think we deserve something like that?”
The question takes him off guard, and he blinks down at himself in confusion. The human looks up, a pained look on his face.
“It’s always us,” he goes on, looking his seraphic counterpart dead in the eye. “We always get the second chance. We get to live. We get the good ending.”
Zaveid turns his gaze to the ocean, not able to meet his own eyes.
“Maybe Edna deserves that. Lailah. Sorey. But us? We’re just riding on the coattails of people who really deserve happiness.” Another dejected sigh, and the bartender runs a hand through his hair. “Eizen and Theodora should’ve gotten a happy ending. But what did they get?”
The seraph sits down next to his other self and sets his phone down. “A whole lot of broken promises?”
     “Yeah.”
It’s silent for a short time, both of them looking out over the waves. The atmosphere is heavy, but Zaveid notices that his human counterpart isn’t giving off any malevolence; there’s only waves of pain as he tries to stick out through whatever the virus is doing to him.
     “I could-”
     “Don’t.”
The human stops him before he can make an offer. “If I’m gonna die, it’ll be on my terms. You feel the same, right?”
The seraph shifts his gaze back down to the ground. “Yeah. I figured this might happen. We’re kind of a stubborn asshole.”
Zaveid knows better than to offer the easy ways out again, so he takes a different approach. He tells his double to wait and then runs off, fast as the wind, leaving a really confused man in a cloud of dust. He comes back with two short glasses and a bottle, dark brown, with a label that indicates a fairly expensive brand of rum.
     “Did you steal that?”
“What! That’s certainly an accusation I didn’t expect to hear from myself of all people... But yes.”
His double snorts, but waits while the seraph sits back down and fills the glasses.
“We could sit here all day and bitch about our pasts, but what d’you say to this instead?” Zaveid offers the second glass to his other half, and despite the disdain laced into his expression, he takes it. They click the glasses together before knocking them back.
“Great to know that no matter what, out habits stay the same.” The bartender drains his glass and shoots a glance over at the seraph. “No matter how bad they are.”
The seraph pouts back in his own direction, but doesn’t argue as he empties his own and refills both.
It’s dark and quiet as they drink, unable to keep a conversation going for more then a minute at a time. They eventually give up, drinking in silence, as they wait for the end.

☆〕event drabble - reinversed. (509 words; 1/?)
you are awake, accompanied by the loudest noise to ever ring, and it feels like it’s been a century.
of course it hasn’t. this world is the same as it’s been before. you’re not in the temple, you’re not soaring through the skies again with lady palutena’s voice in your ears — no, you’re still here, in the city of spirale…
        and you are alone.
there is no goddess here, no other angel to squabble with, and no humans who’ve ever believed in you. you’re just one angel from home, your time of stay growing the distance. you’ve woken up alone in your room, even if it shouldn’t be your own, and you are—
you’re                                        you’re                                                             you’re not anywhere that you know.
you’re panicking for a while and you don’t even realize it. where are you? where are you? where are you? why are you here? where are you, why are you surrounded by books you can’t read from thin and thick and when did these posters get on these walls and
                you. you have to go.
you get up. it hurts. your head yells with pain and your wings drag you down like steel and paper, but it doesn’t matter: you’ve fallen down and gotten up before. it’s no different, even if it is today. there are footsteps from people you know — people you don’t know — people you know, whatever, fine. you don’t care: you just have to leave. your brain keeps telling you to stop, that there’s a fog and behind it is some place to stay, but you can’t. you know you can’t even if they try.
( you leave through that door every day and you come back in through that. you take no other exits. ) they’ll come through the door. there has to be a better exit. you’ll find it. ( you have a report due in four days and you never wrote it. funny. you’ll never finish it. ) nothing at the bookshelves. no hidden door to below. pit, couldn’t you have thought of that instead? ( your family is downstairs. someone must be worried sick. ) what are you going to do? gods, what are you going to do? you’re a stranger and they’ll know it! ( you hear footsteps. ) you hear them louder. your arms shake and your legs and your eyes scan around -
you remember not being able to fly. that’s never been new.         you remember wanting to fly all on your own even when it was laughable. that’s old news.         you remember, in a way, that you can.
the window is there, a mouth bright and open, no trap in sight. all you need is one indomitable leap of faith.
new footsteps add to old. then both fade. a window pulls up, a door creaks open.
you jump out, the wind carries you, and so does the miracle of flight. you turn around, a lady with dark green hair locks eyes with you, and then fibonacci whirls you away.

Like Looking in a Mirror [Subversion part 2]
Words: 787
While Clover had seen quite a few strange things in this place over the time she’d been here, she had to say that hearing she not only had a clone, but said clone was going to be running away and could potentially get them both killed if enough time went by was a bit of a new thing. And a bit of an unpleasant one, too! She certainly had no intention of letting herself get killed, which meant it was off to do some double-hunting. Weird, but sure, why not.
She’d grabbed the injection gun with the soporil just in case- she really didn’t want to have to use it, but it was better that than someone getting hurt. But she’d again rather just plan to not have to use it, there was a chance till that nothing would be wrong at all. Or at least, she’d hope for it.
Her double was apparently in golden ward according to the app on her phone telling her as much, and so she was quick to drive there in chase. However… where would she be? Well, why not just think about where she liked to be in golden? There were tons of good shops, lots of cute cafes, clothing stores, stuff like that… seemed like as good a place to start as any.
With that in mind, she started going from place to place, keeping her eyes peeled for a lookalike. Not at that one café that had great croissants, not at the cute little jewelry place she’d found that one time, not at that home décor place she really liked… but eventually she found a little bit of luck in a clothing store that she’d visited once or twice, turning to look at her double.
“Oh, hey- do you think that this’d look good on… me…… huh?”
“…yeah, I think so.” Clover offered the response with a dry laugh as her clone stood stunned, shrugging. “What, don’t think I’d have a good eye for it?”
“Um… why are you… me?”
“Not entirely sure, honestly. But I’ve seen enough of this place to know that ‘not normal’ is normal.”
“You’ve… uh… what?”
“Look, it’s something of a long story. I can tell you if you want, but I kinda doubt you’d believe me.”
Clover chuckled a little at her words, her clone still standing stunned. It lasted for a good few moments, until finally she just shrugged.
“I don’t think anything could be weirder than seeing another me standing right in front of me, but I’ll pass on the explanations. So, uh… why are you here, though?”
“Well, from what I gather, something’s happened to make you sick. And unless you agree to go back to what’s supposed to be your version of this city, we’ll both die.”
“Wait, what? Die?”
“Yep.”
“How are you so calm at that?”
“It’s, uh… well, more of a long story.” Clover put a hand on her hip, unsure how to explain the nonary games aside from that. After all, she didn’t exactly feel that bringing up the whole ‘childhood kidnapping for a death game’ thing, or the second kidnapping, or the third. And that probably wouldn’t help her double calm down. “The simple answer? I’m not sure what your life’s been like, but I’m a secret agent in mine.”
“Actually?”
“Yeah, actually.”
“….huh. Pretty cool.”
“I’d say so.” She had a proud grin on her face as she nodded, looking around for a moment before looking down to her phone. “So, uh… will you go?”
“What’ll happen? Will it hurt?”
“Honestly, I don’t know. But considering it’s supposed to just send you to where you’re from, and keep us both from dying, I don’t think it’d hurt. That seems a little counter-intuitive.”
“…yeah, I guess so.”
“Yeah.”
“Well… I guess I’ll be off, then? It was nice, uh… meeting you?”
“Yeah, you too.”
Tapping her phone against her clone, she watched as she disappeared into light- and then, she was gone. She almost wished she’d delayed more, there was a lot that she wished she could’ve found out- what had her life been like? What would a Clover who’d always lived in this city be like? But… perhaps it was better she didn’t know.
After all, she couldn’t change her timeline. Her life was her own, even for all the things better or worse. It wasn’t perfect, in fact it was far from perfect- but she already knew too well that wishing for different wouldn’t help her. It couldn’t change anything, so she couldn’t let it get her down.
For now, it’d be best that she got back to work- and of course, lend a hand to anyone who might need one.

@blowyourhousedown
Even if he’d rather not admit it, Link was honestly feeling pretty exhausted. After everything that’d just happened with the other him, it was like he was feeling everything and nothing all at once- so simple enough to say, he wasn’t expressive like he normally was, while trying to figure his way back from the forest to the city.
It was then that he noticed something- a huge wolf. Far bigger than he’d ever seen before, enough to make the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end. However... it wasn’t like a wolfos. It didn’t seem like it wanted to hurt him- not... unnatural. Not dark.
Tumblr media
So because of that, he wasn’t as on guard as he might’ve otherwise been. The hand that’d reflexively gone to his sword moved away, as he let out a sigh. Whatever was up with that huge wolf, it’d go away sooner or later.

She spots a familiar looking kid out looking for her double, just as she’s setting out. Hunched over a book of some kind, remembering how he had trouble with it, she approaches him suspiciously... to see that the book in question was upside down.
She laughs lightly, before turning the book the right way up. “Let me guess. You have vague memories of knowing how to read?” Like her hazy recollections of a family that wasn’t hers, school days and lunch breaks. Leaning in to examine the page of Pit’s book, she wonders how to let him down lightly, when it comes to this thing not being at all factual. She could tell what he was worried about, but... this was a sci-fi thriller, not an actual guide to the situation at hand. “It’s alright. I don’t think you need that book anyway.”
Tumblr media
Adjusting her backpack, she stretches, before giving a reassuring smile. “So? Do you know what you’re gonna do about this thing yet?” She should look out for the kids she knew, especially. It would be terrible... if they were to die because of something like this.

✾ ------------- subversion { @diasentis }
No matter how hard she look - no matter how hard she tried, she just could not find her... double. It’s troubling to her - that despite how hard she try, she just can’t seem to do it.
Leia paces back and forth, tapping her fingers gently against her lips. She should be looking, she knows - but her head is littered with anxiety ridden thoughts, and she just can’t seem to get over them. It’s not until she ends up bumping directly into someone that Leia is pulled from her subconscious, and a tiny gasp escapes her lips. She looks towards the stranger, taking in a deep breath through her nose, as she lets out a frustrated sigh and lowers her hands down to her side.
“Apologies.”
Tumblr media
“I... just. This whole searching thing. I’ve looked everywhere for where she could be, but no matter where I look, I just can’t find her.” She doesn’t mean to dump all of this on the man- and she’s able to catch on that’s exactly what she’s doing rather quickly.
“...Sorry. Have you had any luck finding yours?”

Exhibition visit
Brighton exhibition: BEYOND THE BIAS - RESHAPING IMAGE.
Abstract from the exhibit website: Welcome to the seventh edition of Brighton Photo Biennial. Once again we’re bringing international and Uk-based photographers to the city of Brighton & Hove to create a month of free exhibitions and thought-provoking events for all.
Each Biennial edition is based on a theme, and this year Beyond The Bias – Reshaping image focuses on identity
and understandings of our personal and projected image as influenced by the pervasive genre of fashion and style photography. The festival explores photography’s role in defining and informing our understanding of subjects such as: gender and sexuality, the representation of the body, the politics of style, subcultures and the subversion of social and cultural norms. identity and self-representation are explored in relation to the wider context of mass-representation; where self- image and attitude are often co-opted. including work from documentary photographers and photographic approaches that knowingly reference the language of fashion and style photography, BPB16 unpicks understandings of image and self-image and photography’s role in that. bpb.org.uk photoworks.org.uk @photoworks_uk #BPB16 At the core of BPB16 are three major new exhibition projects, one a European premiere of a show from the USA (p4), another two are new commissions; one centered on British Youth Style (p6), the other a Uk/india collaboration exploring sexuality and gender (p2).
These three shows are accompanied by an array of bespoke exhibition projects and enlivened by an events and digital programme. You can find BPB16 event highlights on page 16 and the full events programme at bpb.org.uk, or visit our BPB16 info hub at University of Brighton Galleries - Edward Street where you’ll find more information on the Biennial projects plus other ways to get involved with the festival and get behind the ideas raised by the exhibitions. The Brighton Photo Biennial is produced by Photoworks, a national development agency for photography based in the city. BPB brings together artists and photographers, specialists and enthusiasts, families, young people and those who just want to find something new. We look forward to seeing you. The Photoworks Team

She has vague memories of this child, memories that aren’t hers. Something about a river, though she can’t imagine why she associates such a thing with them. It’s concerning, to remember something about someone she knows. She doesn’t feel like there’s any kind of danger, at least, but...
“Chara...?” She hadn’t really considered running into a double herself, but she had no way of knowing, did she? For all she knew, they looked just like them -- maybe even behaved just like them. But in that case, she would have to help Chara find them too, right?
Tumblr media
She smiles, lifting one hand up in a small wave. “It’s me, Tressa. The one and only... sort of. Are you doing okay?”

... Oh, dear.
It felt as if Leia had been knocked unconscious for quite some time. As she comes to, she hears her phone (? This isn’t her normal phone, is it?) near her go off - informing her that another version of herself is somewhere out there, in this... city that she doesn’t exactly remember, or even recognize at that.
Her head is spinning with questions. Where is she?
What is this about a clone of herself?
What do you mean if her clone dies, she dies?
...
Tumblr media
“Fine.” Is all she chooses to say. To herself - loud enough for anyone near by to hear her. She slips her phone into the pocket of her skirt, and walks - the sound of her heels clacking behind her as she hurriedly makes her way down the streets she’s unfamiliar with.
She would have time to unpack everything later.
