Was famed Samson and Delilah really painted by Rubens? No, says AI
Long-held doubts about the authenticity of the National Gallery’s masterpiece, bought for £2.5m in 1980, are backed by pioneering technology
The National Gallery has always given pride of place to Peter Paul Rubens’s Samson and Delilah, listing it among the “highlights” of its collection, since it purchased the picture at Christie’s in 1980 for a then record price.
It depicts the Old Testament hero in the lap of the lover who betrayed him, having beguiled him into revealing that his God-given strength lay in his uncut hair. As Samson sleeps, Delilah’s accomplice cuts his locks, rendering him powerless, with soldiers ready at the door to capture him.
Critics have long suggested that the painting is not really by Rubens. And now a series of scientific tests employing groundbreaking AI technology have concluded that the 17th-century Flemish master could never have painted it.
“The results are quite astonishing,” Dr Carina Popovici, the scientist who carried out the study, told the Observer. “The algorithm has returned a 91% probability for the artwork not being authentic.”
In comparing Samson and Delilah with 148 uncontested Rubens paintings, the analysis produced one of the scientists’ highest-ever probabilities of the hundreds of pictures they have tested so far.
“I was so shocked,” said Popovici. “We repeated the experiments to be really sure that we were not making a mistake and the result was always the same. Every patch, every single square, came out as fake, with more than 90% probability.”
The AI analysis was carried out by Art Recognition, a Swiss company based near Zurich of which Popovici is co-founder. It has analysed 400 works with this technology, and has an ongoing collaboration with Tilburg University in Holland.
Its report concludes: “The AI System evaluates Samson and Delilah not to be an original artwork by Rubens with a probability of 91.78%.” In contrast, the scientists’ analysis of another National Gallery Rubens – A View of Het Steen in the Early Morning – came out with a probability of 98.76% in favour of the artist.
The National Gallery bought the picture for £2.5m, equivalent to £6.6m today, and some have suggested that it would now fetch far more as The Massacre of the Innocents sold for a record £49.5m in 2002.
Michael Daley, director of ArtWatch UK, who has researched the painting extensively, described the AI report as “exceedingly damning”. Daley is among those whose serious doubts about the painting’s attribution to Rubens have always been dismissed by the gallery and Rubens scholars.
Critics have long argued that it is only a copy of a Rubens original that is known to have been painted between 1608 and 1609 for his Antwerp patron Nicolaas Rockox which then disappeared after his death in 1640.
They argue that the National Gallery picture is a different painting, one that only surfaced in 1929, declared a Rubens by Ludwig Burchard, an expert who, after his death in 1960, was found to have misattributed paintings by giving out certificates of authenticity for commercial gain.
The picture’s critics dismiss its colours as uncharacteristic of Rubens’s palette and its composition as awkward. They question why, for example, it differs from two contemporary copies made from Rubens’s original. The toes of Samson’s outstretched right foot, for example, are cropped in the National Gallery version, while they are shown in an engraving by Jacob Matham and a painting that depicts the Samson and Delilah hanging in Rockox’s home by Frans Francken the Younger.
“For three decades, the National Gallery dismissed artistically, technically and historically informed challenges to the attribution. When a picture is wrong, everything is wrong,” Daley said.
The National Gallery has faced similar criticism in the past. It included the Salvator Mundi in its 2011 Leonardo exhibition, although it was an unknown work with doubts about its attribution, restoration and ownership. Its display would have boosted its market value and the painting sold at Christie’s, New York, in 2017 for $450 million. “Coming so soon after its ill-advised espousal of the now-rejected $450m Salvator Mundi, these Rubens findings are a calamity for the National Gallery,” Daley added.
Dr Katarzyna Krzyżagórska-Pisarek, an art historian, has long dismissed the Samson and Delilah as “highly problematic”, having identified more than 60 of Burchard’s Rubens attributions that have subsequently been demoted.
“The significance of this new AI method of authentication is potentially groundbreaking. Devoid of human subjectivity, emotion and commercial interests, the software is coldly objective and scientifically accurate. Many questionable works were attributed to Rubens at the beginning of the 20th century… There is today a distinct need for more reliable methods of connoisseurship,” she said.
The AI technology – “convolutional neural network” –analyses different features of an artist’s work, including brushstroke patterns. Popovici said that “everything that’s not by the hand of the assumed artist will come out with a negative probability” and that the technology can produce accurate results even for artists who significantly changed their style across their careers as every artist has a unique brushstroke.
She added: “Sometimes patches don’t come out with the same probability, if it’s not clear but, in this case, every single patch came out with more than 90% probability as a fake. This is very certain.”
A National Gallery spokesman said: “The Gallery always takes note of new research. We await its publication in full so that any evidence can be properly assessed. Until such time, it will not be possible to comment further.”

"Bloom" Delilah S. Dawson
What a mess this book was….
I'm not trying to say that I don't find enjoyment in bad media…. but damn. Firstly, I would like to commend the very nice synopsis on the back. We shall ignore the fact that many of the vital plot-points are spoiled on the very cover. "Oh my god, how will this lovely lesbian love story end" would've been one of those thoughts if it hadn't been for the foreboding catchphrase on the book cover When Sweet romance turns deadly. It's truly a shame that this sentence alone sort of ruined the entire reading experience for me. Reminds me of a similarly infamous description-fail on the audio book for John Greene's Looking for Alaska. But alas, I thought we surpassed the need to spoil really really relevant plot points on book covers.
Now that we have this out of the way, let's talk plot.
Girl meets girl, falls obsessively in love with her. Ignores each and every red flag about her sweet-sweet love interest, pays the price for this shortcoming. Simple enough. None of the characters are particularly interesting. Rosemary, Ro as this quirky girl likes to be called, is your run-of-the-mill hyper-individualistic academic overachiever that thinks her "analytical" approach to life is the reason why she can't maintain any sort of relationship. In reality, she's bland, unoriginal, defines herself through her literary knowledge. And Ash, our lovely antagonist, capitalizes off of that. Tugs on Ro's heartstrings, cradles her fragile ego to the point where Ro starts questioning her own sanity and morales.
Of course, after both tender and naughty scenes, we find that it was Ash who's been seducing, kidnapping, murdering and processing fellow artists, writers and thinkers. Why, dear reader, you might ask?
Because Ash, plagued by an inferiority complex and trauma from her abusive childhood, is convinced that she can consume a person's genius by consuming them. Now, it might not be the most outlandish murder motive but.... like come ooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOn. Her entire personality is based on resourcefulness, not wasting a single part of any produce, meat or utility item. And you're telling me you could not have given her a better motivation for murder than an inferiority complex? It sounds like a cheap explanation.
I don't know what else to say anymore... it was alright. If it weren't for the last 70 pages, I would've stopped reading all together after 30 pages. But, and here I must almost admit defeat to the spoiler-y cover page sentence, I wanted to know more; I needed to know how graphic or gruesome this implied cannibalism-love-story will turn out.
And I was not disappointed; on the contrary, I was delighted.
So, Dawson managed to turn around a bad novel into something that was, towards the end, a quite enjoyable read.
Did it still read like a sophomore literature-studies student's wet dream after sniffing 6 lines of coke off a leather-bound Dostojewski? Most definitely.
Did I still find it enjoyable? All I'm saying, those last 70 pages did god's work.
4/10

it’s father’s day! where my muses are today :
alex. she doesn’t visit, but she does call/video call her father and makes a genuine effort to stay civil. she sends a few texts out to recent clients who’ve just had their first babies wishing them a wonderful first father’s day. bastien. he’s kind of quiet, kind of angry most of the day. he googles thomas simmons and pisses himself off and sulks for a bit. he calls his best friend aeron’s dad because that’s the closest thing he really has and tries to do something nice for him. probably spends some time with mel (his honorary niece) so she doesn’t feel weird about not having a father figure around. benji. he goes home, spends the weekend with his dad, goes on a hunting trip and keeps a smile on his face while his father reminisces old times. charlie. she kind of disappears, which she figures no one will question since part of her alias as charlie is that her father is dead. in reality, she travels two states over and calls her father’s phone from a payphone/burner phone when she knows he won’t be able to answer, so she can hear his voice on the answering machine and cries her heart out at the sound of it. delilah. she spends the morning with her husband, as this year is his first father’s day since their daughter was born. she gets lunch with her papa and spends a solid hour on the phone with her biological father. eli. she spends the day busy, trying to keep the little ones entertained and happy and battling the overwhelming mom-guilt that they don’t have a father to celebrate. ford. while he’s had the urge to stay half-drunk most of the day, he doesn’t, preparing for the rush of dudes out with their dads and losers like him who drink to forget their dads. (and he blinks back tears when his little brothers show up to the bar and raise a joking toast about how he’s really the only dad they’ve had and he did a pretty damn good job at it). jake. he avoids home, won’t pick up the phone if his brother calls because he can’t handle pretending to reminisce about maxwell. he stays busy, distracts himself, helps his friends set up father’s day celebrations for their dads and avoids the topic when addressed altogether. john. he visits his father’s gravesite for awhile, tells his little brother every story about john sr. that he can remember, and sits with his mom at the facility for awhile. leo. he goes to his father’s grave, tries his hardest to get theo to come with him, but fails. he doesn’t talk to theo much on father’s day, as they have starkly different opinions about james. after visiting the cemetery he goes back to work, feeling a little sad but mostly okay. seth. he’s quiet. he wishes more than anything he could go back to his hometown and visit his father and grandfather’s graves with his brother, but knows it’s not an option, so he does nothing, acts like it’s a normal day, prays no one asks him what his plans are. silas. he gets up early, does as many chores as can be done before sunrise, and takes his dad out on the horses. it’s a struggle, with chris’ limited mobility and muscle spasms, so they take it slow as they head out. they don’t talk almost the entire day, but when he looks over and sees his father look almost happy for the first time in months, he can’t help but smile. wyatt. ironically enough, he leaves his father’s grave in nashville and goes home to kentucky and spends the day with his uncle travis, pestering him for stories of beau’s younger years and more harmless exploits.

MY MUSES AND THEIR SPECIFIC LOVE LANGUAGES PT 1.
ALEX. – active listening. if she knows you’re actively paying attention to what she’s saying and genuinely care, she will melt inside. and if she genuinely cares for you as a person you will never have anything less than her full attention when you speak.
BASTIEN. – vulnerability. it is agonizingly difficult for bastien to force himself to show vulnerability, so any attempt to should be received as the act of devotion that it is for him. and whether that applies to the other person or not, that is how he will treat vulnerability on their part as well.
BENJI. – protection. while he’s also very big on acts of service in general, benji’s chief method of showing is love and care is by being protective, intensely so. he will not ever hesitate for a moment to align himself with danger for the ones he loves. also biting
CHARLIE. – gentle bullying. about 99 percent of the time, any saccharine kindness from her should be considered an insult at worse or false at best. ribbing, teasing, lighthearted insults on the other hand should all be taken as signs of warmth and affection, as sugary endearments can make her uncomfortable.
DELILAH. – baking. while everything else about delilah, her voice, her personality, her presence, is loud, baking is quiet. the only people who know she bakes are those she’s particularly close to, and those that know how much love and care she places into it are even fewer.
JAKE. – remembrance. jake never forgets a face, a name, a birthday. he never forgets a favorite snack or how the people he cares for take their coffee. he remembers details and notices changes in behavior and appearance quickly. when remembrance is returned, it often means more to him than he knows how to express.
JOHN. – gift giving. all his life, john has had people depending on him, with his primary way of expressing care to them being meeting those needs. in relationships with people who aren’t dependent on him providing, he tends to buy things, usually small, meaningful things, for the people he cares for.

WHICH TRAGIC CHARACTER FROM ANCIENT GREECE ARE YOU ?
tagged by – no one tagging – anyone who wants to!
WYATT JESSUP.
orestes. you are orestes from the oresteia by aeschylus, and you are haunted by a cycle of pain. you try your hardest to be a better person, but sometimes you wonder if you will stop feeling trapped by your past. you have a strong sense of justice, you are quick to protect and defend those you love, and you are not afraid to compromise your morals if that means you are settling the score. eventually though, the consequences of your deeds will catch up to you, but that's okay, because sometimes looking your ugliness right in the eye is the greatest release.
JAKE SULLIVAN.
patroclus. you are patroclus, from the iliad by homer, doomed by fate to be stuck in a love story that has no place on the battlefield. although you always have the best intentions, you have to realize you cannot save everyone. your unwavering loyalty means you often lose yourself in the process of putting others first. take a deep breath, remember who you are, and that you are deserving of the same love you try to put out. you are kind, you are strong, and you give and you give but it is never enough to protect those you love. in the end, it's not even enough to protect yourself.
DELILAH PRICE.
cassandra. you are cassandra from the trojan women by euripides and agamemnon by aeschylus. people have tried to silence you one too many times, but you are resilient. your own dignity and agency have always come first, but at a great cost. you know yourself and your inner strength, but that won't ever stop you from feeling completely alone in the world. sometimes simply enduring the pain won't be enough, no matter how hard you want it to be. above all, you must never lose your unwavering hope in mankind, even as the world forsakes you. it is what keeps you human.

So I Let Go, Chapters 1-3
or: The Hanahaki Disease AU no-one asked for. Well, @srrrochka did ;)
Daud’s mouth was pinched as he marked the day on the calendar in his study at the Chamber. The building that he and the remaining Whalers worked out of had a roof, this time, as decreed by the Empress, and he didn’t have to worry anymore about stepping on a rat as though on a live charge as he turned back to his desk. This being Dunwall, however, there were enough other things to worry about.
Today’s date was 23rd Month of Ice, 1842. Five years ago to the day, Corvo Attano had spared his life. Incidentally, that was how he’d end up killing him. Eventually.
Daud set a hand over his chest, pressing against the fabric of his coat and the layers underneath, hoping against hope to alleviate the ache at least a little. He wasn’t given to comparing pains against one another, finding it self-indulgent. A bullet wound was a bullet wound, a slash with a knife was just that and nothing else; and this… this was his final act of self-destruction. He’d not wished for it, no. And in truth, he’d not been the one to wreathe the magic, but he had been fool enough to incur a witch’s wrath in the pursuit of a name, of truth, of perhaps a scrap of justice. When Delilah cursed him, howled that one day love would be his doom, all he’d had for her was a tired grin.
“I don’t love anyone.”
It might have been true, then. He’d loved nothing but the black ice of the Void in his veins and the song of bone; flashes of shadows and blades raised in the dark. For years, he’d thought nothing of her curse, and he’d convinced himself that the Void itself must have forgotten. Only now, he understood — was reminded — that the Void never forgot a debt be paid. In the end, that was all magic was. Delilah had set the price, and the day Daud had asked Corvo for his life, he’d set himself to pay.
And here, now, was the reckoning.

✨Why I Picked Each Artist:✨
.
1.Maria Nepomuceno:
Out of all the artists on the list, Maria Nepomuceno is my absolute FAVORITE!!!! Let me tell you why…
She creates art in such a way that brings me back to so many childhood memories of creating art. You know the time when art didn’t have so many “rules” attached to it. When I saw the art work (that I posted above) I immediately thought of when I was little playing in my play room with sensory toys. Those types of toys are so important in childhood development! Her artwork especially reminded me of the oversized bead necklaces I often would play with as a kid. Because of this, I instantly felt a connection with her. It’s almost like she has the piece of my artwork that feel like has been lacking. Overall, I feel like it would be very beneficial for me to spend time getting to know this artists even deeper, and learn how (and why) she creates her artwork. I see her playful child-like inspiration in her artwork and I would love if some of that rubbed off on me. I feel like I personally have become so focused on creating more “sophisticated” artwork that in a sense looks more “grown-up?” Does that make sense? I often forget that our childhoods don’t have to be forgotten and thrown in the attic. 😂
Anyway, Maria Nepomuceno was the artist that inspired me instantly. When I researched her work I immediately had so many ideas on how I could engage with her techniques! It got me so excited! I really hope that I get her for this assignment because her creations brings me joy and that is my goal for all the art I create. I know I will be able to learn so much from her and her style! She is definitely my #1 Pick!!🤩🙌🏽🥰
.
.
2.Tanya Aguiñiga:
I picked Tanya Aguiñiga in my top three because she creates art like I have never seen before! In this particular artwork, that I listed above, she created almost like a large “tassel?” I couldn’t tell what it was made up of right away, but then I started researching. I found that the materials were actually made from synthetic hair—which is so cool! I feel like this artists is really inspiring because she creates art with a completely different level of thinking than I do. I have never once thought “I am going to make something with wigs.” But then again, why not?🤷🏽♀️ I think this artist would be beneficial to study because she creates art with materials that I never thought could be worked into an artwork. So I think, I would be able to gain a different perspective on how I could create art. If I got her, I can see myself enjoying the process on figuring out how she comes up with the interesting ideas she has!🤔
.
.
3.Cecilia Vicuña:
I picked Cecilia Vicuña, because I really liked how she had such a variety to her artwork. Above I posted a picture of one of her installations, but she also does a lot of paintings and explores other mediums that are also very cool and unique! Her installations kind of remind me of Sheila Hicks’ work, that I was able to explore in color theory. But Cecilia has a different sort of approach to things that I have yet to explore deeper. From viewing her work, her techniques are very interesting because she deals with so many different mediums. Her uses of her color and arrangements are very important to each piece and I think I could learn a lot on her intentionality. With her works every detail has a purpose conveyed in the piece that makes it so unique. I would love to gain a deeper understanding on different ways I can be intentional to get my message from the piece to the viewer.
.
.
.
My Picks:
#1 Maria Nepomuceno
#2 Tanya Aguiñiga
#3 Cecilia Vicuña

Uranium mining, environmental racism, and resource extraction on Native land during pandemic: The Navajo people were promised and also legally entitled to receive $600 million to help protect themselves against covid, but it took 6 whole weeks for the US government to issue the aid, which only happened after the Navajo sued the government. During those 6 weeks waiting for help, Navajo Nation became the site of the highest per capita infection rates outside of the NYC-Philadelphia urban corridor. In another major Native and relatively rural region held hostage by resource extraction companies, right in the midst of pandemic and quarantines, Lakota living in the Pine Ridge region (site of what might be the “poorest” counties in the US), are grappling not just with the beginning of the construction of the major Keystone XL pipeline, but also with renewed US federal government support of a Canadian mining company’s project meant to open a uranium mine in the Black Hills.
And right before local quarantines and lockdowns began across the US, Dine land and the Navajo were in headlines because of a recent increase in attention given to the lasting legacy of poisoning and environmental racism from the infamous uranium mining on Dine land and the Colorado Plateau in the mid-20th century. (Much of the uranium mining was taking place at the same time that Dine matriarchs led the fights against coal mines at Black Mesa and other sites.) Here’s a statement from The Guardian, from 8 May 2020: ‘The Native American tribe [Navajo] now has the highest per-capita Covid-19 infection rate after only New York and New Jersey, and the spread is not slowing. “We are doing our very best to flatten the curve with the very limited resources we have on the Navajo nation,” president Jonathan Nez told the Guardian. “The first citizens of this country were once again pushed aside by the most powerful government in the world … but now that we’re in the headlines, US citizens are finally realising the deplorable conditions our people live in. We’re fed up. This has got to end.”:

A statement from AP/CBS, from 8 October 2019: ‘Dr. Loretta Christensen - the chief medical officer on the Navajo Nation for Indian Health Service, a partner in the research - said 781 women were screened during an initial phase of the study that ended last year.Among them, 26% had concentrations of uranium that exceeded levels found in the highest 5% of the U.S. population, and newborns with equally high concentrations continued to be exposed to uranium during their first year, she said. [...] From the end of World War II to the mid-1980s, millions of tons of uranium ore were extracted from the Navajo Nation, leaving gray streaks across the desert landscape as well as a legacy of disease and death.’

Lakota resistance against uranium and Keystone XL, early 2019. [From: Delilah Friedler, Grist, 10 May 2020.]
‘[A]10,600-acre uranium mine proposed to be built in the Black Hills. The Dewey-Burdock mine would suck up as much as 8,500 gallons of groundwater per minute from the Inyan Kara aquifer to extract as much as 10 million pounds of ore in total. [...] For years, it seemed like the Lakota could drag out the case long enough to make Powertech’s prospects no longer worth the fight. The price of domestic uranium was on a steady decline: The federal government already had vast stockpiles, and nuclear energy producers could import it more cheaply from places like Australia and Canada. By the end of 2018, all but five U.S. uranium mines had been shut down or suspended. Yet today, Powertech is just one of several companies applying to open new mines [...]. In July 2019, after lobbying from uranium producers, [...] Tr*mp convened a Nuclear Fuel Working Group to devise policies that could throw a lifeline to the struggling industry. Released in April, the group’s report won applause from Powertech’s parent company by recommending renewed federal investment in uranium. Though many experts say the U.S. already has more of the mineral than it can use, Trump’s proposed 2021 budget would allocate $150 million to stock a new reserve with domestically mined uranium. The share prices of U.S. mining companies jumped after the report’s release, while factors related to COVID-19 caused the global price of uranium to surge throughout March and April.’
Here’s just a taste of the effects of uranium in the Four Corners region. [From: Harvey Wasserman. Killing Our Own: The Disaster of America's Experience with Atomic Radiation.]
‘Church Rock, New Mexico, would seem an improbable spot for a nuclear disaster. A dusty cluster of industrial machinery set in the arid mesas of the great Southwest, its most distinguishing feature might be considered a large pond of murky liquid, unusual in such dry terrain. Church Rock also hosts a series of underground uranium mine shafts [...]. A Wall of Radioactive Water: In the early morning hours of July 16, 1979–fourteen weeks after the accident at Three Mile Island–all of that changed. The dam at Church Rock burst sending eleven hundred tons of radioactive mill wastes and ninety million gallons of contaminated liquid pouring toward Arizona. [...] No one was killed in the actual flood. But along the way it left residues of radioactive uranium, thorium, radium, and polonium, as well as traces of metals such as cadmium, aluminum, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, selenium, sodium, vanadium, zinc, iron, lead and high concentrations of sulfates. [...]
Except for the bomb tests, Church Rock was probably the biggest single release of radioactive poisons on American soil. Ironically it occurred thirty-four years to the day after the first atomic test explosion at Trinity, New Mexico, not far away. The source of the catastrophe was uranium mill wastes.’

TAPE RECORDING: 001, INFORMATION.
Statistics: a quick tour into Samuel’s life.
NAME: samuel hayworth. name as given by his handler. real name is currently unknown. CODENAME: the golden viper / the viper. ALIASES: sam, sammy. AGE: 30 - 45, verse dependent. CURRENT OCCUPATION: samuel is currently a hitman, paid to kill for others. he will also participate, for pay, in other acts --- robbery, threats, extortion. GENDER & PRONOUNS: cis male, he/him. SEXUAL ORIENTATION: samuel can be classified as sexually...lacking. he hasn’t had much experience in romance, let alone with sex itself, so he has no idea what he’s into. however, he is bisexual, but discovering such will be a learning curve. HEIGHT: 6′1. FASHION CHOICES: anything black and comfy ... one would struggle to pick him out of a crowd. PERSONALITY: sam lacks the ablity to emote in any strong way, unless the feeling is anger. he’s relatively quite stoic and struggles with being nice or polite to people. he is incredibly protective of those close to people and tends to ... overestimate the bonds he creates, putting too much weight in them. he does not trust easily. THREAT LEVELS: high. SKILL SET: minor healing abilities and lots of tactical training.
Biography: an exploration into childhood trauma and found family.
TW for child abuse & neglect, references to animal death in the ‘handler’ section, death & murder.
CHILDHOOD.
Samuel was the second child of Emily and Daniel [REDACTED]. He was a generally bright, happy boy with a penchant for sharing and a great deal of love for his older sister, Marian.
Emily was a politician and advocated for the registration of superheroes. This lead to some ... complicated arguments arising in the family unit where Samuel, at age six, burned his hand. They rushed him to the hospital but, as soon as they got there, they realised the scars were already gone. It was as if he’d never been burned by the bonfire at all.
A few tests at the hospital identified the cause - Samuel had minor healing abilities.
Daniel knew it would be safer to leave their son unregistered, but Emily stood form; the morning after a particularly harsh argument, she marched herself down to the Registry, and signed away Samuel’s name.
A month later, Dr. Austen knocks on the door of their family home. He’s a polite man with a knife - edged smile, twinkling eyes that betray absolutely nothing. His voice is soft, soothing, and Samuel likes him immediately.
His parents don’t. The offer is made: five million for Samuel. His powers would be useful for ... study. It’s declined and then, a month later, the family perishes in a fire. Mysterious circumstances.
Samuel rises again, a boy - phoenix. Dr. Austen is kind enough to take the boy in.
HANDLERS.
Dr. Austen became Samuel’s handler. From the ages six to fifteen, Samuel was kept on a small compound with soldiers and other superheroes. Here, he was put through rigorous, daily training -- and harshly beaten if he were to fail any task or come up short.
A particular formative moment is when Dr. Austen tries to force Samuel to take a life. He staunchly refused, eight years old and unaware of the consequences. Dr. Austen conceded -- until the night came. He sent Samuel into the woods for some firewood and set a pack of dogs loose on him.
Samuel came back, dripping with blood, scarred all over his body. A lesson learned: disobedience will not help you survive.
At fifteen, he begins to travel with Dr. Austen. They wanted a killer, so they made one themselves -- utterly obedient, cold to a fault, and brutally intelligent. They gave him a name and he killed, that was that. That was his purpose.
THE CHANGE.
He’s twenty when the mask begins to slip. The subject: Aneska. The daughter of a rich politician, with curly raven hair and soft eyes. She’s fourteen and, through the hazy fog of memory, she reminds him of his sister. Strong - willed and bratty. Protective of her family.
He holds the gun to her little head and, for the first time since he was eight, he doesn’t pull the trigger. Instead, he tells her to tell her father to get the hell out of dodge, and flees into the night.
Austen tracks him for five years and, during this period, Samuel is constantly on the run. He’s unused to the real world, new to having to care about himself, and fleeing for his life almost constantly.
SETTLING DOWN.
And, one day, it all just...stops. There’s no more glimpses of Austen. There’s nothing.
Samuel has been watched long enough to know when it stops. The moment where eyes give up on him, where Austen leaves him. He settles down.
A shitty apartment in the middle of fucking nowhere, with neighbours that are too loud, with strange noises lurking around every corner. Home.
He begins taking hits, uncaring as to who the person is. Old, young, good, bad. If there’s a price tag next to their name, they’re dead.
IT ALL BEGINS AGAIN.
He’s fresh from the kill when the girl burst through his window. Glass shatters and there she stands, no older than fourteen, mouth turned into a growl. She fights well -- she fights like she’s been training for it her entire life.
Of course, she has. After Dr. Austen grew bored with Sam’s tantrum, he turned towards a new killer -- Delilah. She takes him toe - to - toe with ease and he realises then and there just how much he’s been slacking. Killing low - ranking people who didn’t put up a fight wasn’t exactly a challenge.
It’s made worse by the fact he doesn’t want to kill her.
She’s young, and feral, and desperately reminds him of himself. Her hands wrap around his neck and he plays dead -- a smart move. Always play to a killer’s ego.
He waits until she’s gone before tracking her to the tiny apartment where she’s stashed away with Dr. Austen, the classic home of wasted youth.
He shoots Dr. Austen with a trembling hand and takes Delilah home with him.
THE CURRENT SITUATION.
Delilah, though untrusting of Sam, does consider him her best hope of survival. She’s living in his tiny apartment and he’s badgering her about school, a conversation she won’t entertain.
He is currently an active hitman. She’s a vigilate, with the powers to warp reality, doing her little justice-act behind Sam’s back.

IT'S THANKSGIVING, WHAT ARE MY OCS UP TO?
alex. probably at a soup kitchen or community event of some kind, thanksgivings with her family are rare. almost definitely the one on call for the clinic, spends the evening in the office.
charlie. likely on a hunting trip (what else is new). probably makes an appearance at the de luca’s dinner later in the evening because she promised.
ford. with his brothers. they don’t do a big meal or anything (an excess of food like that stresses these boys out so bad) but they do make a turkey at least i think. probably roughhouse and get into shenanigans. kincaid’s is open, technically, but it’s usually just ford and hank and they close early.
bastien. spends the vast majority of the day with family, whether that’s in new york, tennessee, or louisiana, it just depends what vacation he could get approved from both jobs.
delilah. back home in signal mountain. she spends the morning with her dad, and goes with him to her mama and pop’s for dinner. (this year her three year old starts actually learning some of the wacky dynamics lmao.)
jake. 50/50 if he went home to kentucky to be with his brother and nephews or is hanging out with the o’connells (@lovcdandlost). might also be at a donation center of some kind helping out.
wyatt. goes back home to kentucky, spends the majority of the day with his uncle travis, but visits with his mama around dinner assuming she’s on good behavior. 100% preps dog safe portions of anything they cook for his huge ass pack.
benji. i know he’s not technically on here anymore but it feels wrong to leave him off the list okay. 50/50 is either at home in signal mountain visiting with his parents and delilah (and co) or in new york with aeron and The Lousianans™
eli. at the hartwins with the kids. she and ian help everly in the kitchen and they all take turns entertaining the twins with the parade and various cartoons.
john. working, probably. he’ll have happily traded shifts with any coworkers that had families to be home with. video calls with his younger brother at some point. will try to visit his mother if he can sometime during the week, but it's not likely he manages it day-of.

Chronicles of Exandria: The Legend of Vox Machina II
I did this for the first volume, so I bought this artbook right away just to do it again. <3 My Winter’s Crest gift to all the critters.
The art. Once again I cannot overstate the stunning artwork of the critter community. I know some fans balk at the price, but all the artists are paid to have their art in the book - and I think the big price tag is well worth artist getting some compensation for their work (do correct me if I’m wrong). I won’t be sharing any photos of of the art, but most of it is available online already.
However, I will share this photo of the print on the box the book came in:

Excerpt of the Foreward:
“The memories in this book are real. They were created with love and laughter around a table with friends, and let loose on the wind to find what ears would listen. The joys and pains of every winding turn still occupy our minds daily and if you are reading this, I suspect they live on in yours as well. We were there. We witnessed it unfold.”
Vox Machina was only able to scry on Scanlan once, as seen in the episode Jugs and Rods, but some time after Scanlan warded himself against arcane sight.
The Mantle of the Tempest is described as “eternal autumn leaves.”
Keyleth goes on to rule with wisdom and grace.
Usually the Cobalt Soul has problems researching historical figures for whom there is little written word about...... With Taryon they had the opposite problem: there was too much! lmao. And 90% of it is believed to be embellished or flat out lies.
Nicknames that Taryon gave himself and were never used by anyone ever: “The Winsome Winner of Wildemount,” “Talented Tary,” “Golden-Maned Guardian of Good,” and “The Vindicator.”
Uvenda, the gnome in Vesrah, is still alive!! She’s stepped down as leader now and is the tale-teller of Vesrah.
The Ashari call the kraken that VM fought for Keyleth’s Aremente “Ulugrah the Requisite.”
Uvenda claims that Ulugrah, upon learning that the creatures it had trounced were legendary heroes (I’m assuming they mean Vox Machina), it boasts about it’s victory against them to anyone who will listen any who come to its lair in the Plane of Water.
Tova went by different epithets including: “The Bear,” “Little Half-Ear,” “The Bloody-Handed,” and “The Skin Changer.” After surviving the Hells thanks to Vax’s ring of invisibility, she gained the name “The Unseen Death.” Little else can be verified about Tova, but none of her friends she went to with Dis survived.
Grey Hunt Lore
Lord Wolf de Rolo and Lady Melanie van Musel de Rolo were the leaders of the 4th reign of Whitestone. It was a political marriage and Melanie was particularly unhappy. She had a garden filled with flora and fauna from her home in Wildemont. The garden is now known as the Widow’s Garden and many of the plants were poisons that she used to slowly assassinate Lord Wolf with.
After being injured in the Great Whitestone Fire, he couldn’t recover because of the poison and he died leaving Melanie the ruler. She decided to redraw the lines of the city walls, pushing into the Parchwood Timberlands which didn’t go well. Construction was plagued by accidents, animal attacks, and phantoms were reported (such as of Lord Wolf) - though the construction of a Temple of the Dawnfather went unhindered.
Lady Melanie’s cousin was Ivan van Musel, a cleric, and he declared that Melanie had pissed off the Dawnfather by expanding without showing reverence. Ivan went into the forest after much mediation and was later found battered but alive atop a felled Direwolf. Ivan had a vision in which the Lawbearer agreed to the expansion no further than where Ivan had felled the Direwolf and that from here on, a citizen of Whitestone must venture into the Parchwood when called to do so and be tested.
Melanie created the title Grand Master of the Grey Hunt, the third ruling house of Whitestone, for Ivan. The third house has since forth been in change of the Grey Hunt and managing the city’s relationship with the world beyond the city walls.
Hundreds of gold in property damage during Vox Machina’s stay at Dalen’s Closet while VM “relentlessly pranked” each other.
Whitestone became a thriving metropolis during VM’s year off - in part because of Allura keeping it safe during Thordak’s reign while everywhere else was ravaged.
K’yrrn - the dark elf that kidnapped Taryon - is from Xhorhas!
Though Tary could be called a fool, a braggart, a coward... in the moment he stood against his father’s selfishness and bigotry and forgave and reconciled with him is described as being more valiant than slaying.
Lionel Gayheart had “an unusual case of amnesia.”
JB Trickfoot continued to work in Whitestone’s library and it’s thanks to many of her notes that the Cobalt Soul has as much as they do on Vox Machina.
“Uh, yes, the very first thing I remember about meeting Vox Machina was when the red-haired lady jumped off a mountain. It was grisly. But what I’ll remember forever is what happened afterward. The coin that Lady Vex’ahlia used, the glow of light, the power. It brought her back to life. They really were like gods.”
Taryon’s autobiography’s dedication: “This book is dedicated to Lawrence. But it is for my family.”
Taryon thinks his father was actually proud of Tary’s Darrington Brigade.
Tary never liked his father, but after returning home Tary began to love him.
Mariya, Tary’s mom, was part of the Brigade and took care of the injured warriors.
Maryanne, Tary’s sister, became the driving force behind the Darrington Fund charity and even gave up her home for those less fortunate than herself. When she called Tary “brother” it was no longer an insult.
Tary is most proud that his mother finally has a united family, one to be proud of.
Kaylie Shorthalt talks a bit about Lionel - says he was a goofy son of a bitch. He kept talking to her about ducks though. He once tried to show her his house, but he just took her to an oasis in the middle of desert that was full of ducks.
The Cobalt Soul doesn’t like to spread rumors but they do have theories of Lionel’s Marquesian mallard heritage.
Aes Adan, aka the Meat Man, rise to power coincided with the disappearance of several low to mid level criminals.
A scholar once went to visit Scanlan to interview him to see if the rumors were true that Scanlan had been the Meat Man. The Scribe returned, unable to remember anything from his visit. In his notebook were only crude drawings of ducks. Scanlan still using that Modify Memory...
The fucking Cobalt Soul knows that Scanlan sacrificed the 9th level spell he was saving for Vax to stop Vecna from leaving. It’s history folks.
For the folks out there who love the Briarwoods’ love for each other, some of an excerpt of Delilah’s journal: “No matter the cost, my love, I will do it. I care not how many must die, or how grave the sins must be that I commit. I broke the world once for you, Sylas. I shall do it again, and again, and again, for you. For us. Forever.”
Vecna envied the Raven Queen, as her followers did so not just because they feared her, but because they loved and respected her too.
Vecna threatened the assembled protectors of Vasselheim, saying that it would be the perfect place for ambush, but that’s no fun when there are many less-protected loved ones. People he threatened include Earthbreaker Groon’s daughter (Desir), Vord’s family, J’mon’s concubines, all of Whitestone and particularly Cassandra. And Young Velora Vessar, “playing alone in her room.”
The Everlight: Redeemer of All
“Comprehension is the only true measure of dominion.”
Pelor, The Dawnfather: The Primordial Light
“Faith is defined by the darkness we have not conquered.”
Ethrid Brokenbranch AKA Sprigg the Obnoxious gets his own book of history by the Cobalt Soul. Autobiographical writings were found in the wreckage of his house
The Goddess Ioun: Our Knowing Mistress
“Comprehension is the only true measure of dominion.” (This is the same quote as for the Everlight - idk which one is the error.)
The Raven Queen: The Matron of Ravens
“By my grace, all are rendered equal.”
It is forbidden to study Arkhan the Cruel.
Vox Machina lived out the rest of their days in relative happiness and peace.
Percy’s magnum opus is the Clock Tower of Whitestone - a national treasure of Tal’Dorei.
Vex continued to rule as Baroness for a time after Percy’s passing. Vex saw her bother’s spirit after the birth of her first child. She reconciled somewhat with her father and showered Velora with love and blessings.
Kaylie went to school at the Alabaster Lyceum in Emon on Scanlan’s dime.
Pike and Scanlan had a lengthy courtship.
Tary’s book The Daring Trials and Tribulations of Ser Taryon Darrington contained an accurate account of his time with Vox Machina, even if nothing else is accurate.
Grog helped Earthbreaker Groon restore the Temple to the Stormlord while staying Vasselheim, defending his title in the Crucible.
The final, actual words of the book that aren’t a dedication or part of an image: “And as the story is told: ‘Everyday that raven comes to visit.’” ;’(
There is a stunning four page fold-out page of Percy’s clock tower. I cannot emphasize enough how lovely it is. The end of it dedicates it to Vex and is quoted with, “I couldn’t have asked for a better dream.”
On the other side of the fold-out are some... sketches of Percy’s notes? It seems that Diplomacy is now powered up by Cabal’s Ruin.
As part of “Cobalt Souls” thank you page: “Within a book, a story can only sleep. It requires a reader to give it life.”

Don't waste your life behind that guitar You may get gone, but you won't get far You're not the first, you won't be the last And you can tell us all about it when you come crawling back That road you're on, just winds and winds Your spinning your wheels and wasting you're time
I get these calls, out on the road “Heard your song on my radio We always said you'd make it big And I tell all my friends, I knew you back when So don't forget all us little folks And when you crash and burn Remember we told you so”
But when the lights come up And I hear the band And where they said I'd never be is exactly where I am I hear the crowd I look around And I can't find an empty chair Not bad for a girl goin' nowhere

Hello everyone! This is Delilah Mistfall, a Centaur Circle of Stars Druid that I made for D&D. She lives in a remote agricultural village where Halflings and Centaurs live in harmony and collaborate to keep their community running. Nearby this village are the ruins of an ancient megalithic temple built by a race of long-lost giants. Here Delilah studies the stars in order to uncover what prophecies they hold. Although Delilah is a shy, soft-spoken, and unassuming character, she is the first line of defense against incursions by eldritch abominations from beyond the stars, and often serves as an early warning system for omens of destiny written in the heavens. In case anyone is curious, the fur patterning on the equine part of her body is modeled after a specific horse breed known as a peacock appaloosa. I am using this Tumblr account to advertise that my commissions are open if anyone is interested in buying art from me. Here are my prices: - Individual Character, No Specific Background or Color: $50. US - Multiple Characters (On one page), No Specific Background or Color: $50. US - Individual Character, Full Color, No Specific Background (This also applies to Reference Sheets): $60. US - Multiple Characters (On one page), Full Color, No Specific Background: $65. US - Individual Character, Grayscale, With Specific Background: $70. US - Multiple Characters (On one page), Grayscale, With specific background: $80. US - Individual Character, Full Color, With Specific Background: $100. US - Multiple Characters (On one page), Full Color, With Specific Background: $200. US - Semi-Photorealistic Portrait of a real life person: $50. US (Must provide at least one photo of the person on question so I can use it as a reference.
