The Japanese Version of Deltarune Chapters 3 & 4

last year i made a post covering aspects of deltarune chapter 2’s japanese localization that i hadn’t seen others talk about. people seemed to like it! and i liked making it as well, so now that chapters 3 and 4 are out, i’ve looked at the japanese text for them to see if i could find anything interesting.

and… yep i did.

since i’m one of the first english fans to look at the new japanese text in this manner, there’s a lot that i skimmed over or just straight up didn’t read, as a decent amount of dialogue is jumbled or shoved under “scr_text”. i mainly focused on the lore-important segments, since there aren’t as many character voices or jokes with interesting translations as there were in chapter 2… with two exceptions.

tenna

tenna is generally pretty well localized. i didn’t translate a lot of his dialogue, but 8-4 has done a pretty outstanding job of making tenna sound like a japanese TV host. for example, the narration to his intro video is translated from this:

It's now time for our feature presentation FEACHER Coming straight from your house Coming straight from YOUR house! He's the One He's GROOVY and NEVER glooby! You can't get this from an EGG! The sensation of your screen The show that makes you scream Say it with him, folks!

to this:

大変オマタセいたしました！ (Thank you for waiting so long!) はぢまるヨ！ (Lettuce begin!) アナタの　おうちから　お届け！ (Delivered from your house!) アナタの！　おうちから！　お届け！(Delivered! From! Your! they didn’t need to intentionally misspell the line that replaced “FEACHER” but they did and i love that.

a lot of lines like these were translated to be more in the style of japanese television, and that’s awesome. i really admire the effort, and the shift is palpable even to me, who isn’t fluent in japanese at all.

others have already been curious about how “YOUR TAKING TOO LONG” and its variations are translated— in fact, this youtube video that i found beat me to the punch with covering it. (edit: this one provides a comparison between languages, which is very nice)

jack uses a mixture of hiragana and katakana (no kanji), refers to himself in the third person, misspells things (mostly using ワ for the particle “wa” instead of は), and occasionally uses emoticons. all of these give a strange but fairly childish impression.

and here’s how his iconic phrases were translated:

raise up your bat

i looked at raise up your bat’s lyrics to see if there was any extra lore behind them. there wasn’t, but… ralsei’s replacement lyrics are pretty funny in this version. here are the full lyrics

who are pat and britney? are they the secret key to all the mysteries of the story? who knows!

UNUSED

i didn’t find many changes in the text of the chapter 3 and 4 “unused” text (otherwise known as “the voice in the code”), but i noticed that their dialogue sounds a little less feminine/childish compared to in chapter 1. maybe. it does seem like a lot of time has passed. idk

edit: actually, after looking back at all the unused text, it seems like they’ve been always more gender-neutral than i previously assumed.

prophecy

a few changes to the prophecy lines stood out to me.

THE THIRD HERO. A PRINCE, ALONE IN DEEPEST DARK. (eng) The third hero / A lonely prince living in the depths of darkness (jp)

reference to “depths”. nothing of note besides that

THE FLOWER MAN, TRAPPED IN ASYLUM. (eng) The flower man is captive in a facility (jp)

this is the word used to replace “asylum” here. take it as you will:

and the one i found by far the most interesting…

LOVE WILL FIND THE GIRL. (eng) The girl will learn the true meaning of love. (jp)

huh????? what the fuck does that mean??

also, the word for “love” used in japanese is 愛, which refers to any kind of love. so no double meaning here, but that doesn’t rule out the possibility of an intended double meaning in english, as the japanese translation of undertale has often had to erase intended double meanings that were not translatable, like “determination”.

addendum: As you know,

i’m editing the post to add this in because i forgot that it’s important.

you know the carol line where she says YOU in bright red text and no one knows whether she’s talking to kris or the player? well, luckily, japanese usually omits the word “you” in place of a person’s actual name, so hopefully looking at the japanese version of the line should—

she just uses the word for “you”.

this just makes it more evident that it is meant to be unclear who she’s speaking to.

CONCLUSION

wow that’s it. that’s a lot less than i expected there to be, but again, the game is translated pretty faithfully and there aren’t as many jokes that had to be localized in these two chapters. if you notice anything or want me to translate specific text, don’t be afraid to ask! i’ll be happy to answer any questions and help people out.

analysing the dorm songs: shiitenpen

quick disclaimer: while my listening and speaking skills in japanese are around the N3 level, my reading and writing are at N5 (the lowest), so if there are mistakes, do not hesitate to point them out! spoilers for the ending of book 7, though not in detail.

while all of the dorm songs feature drums, guitars, other “rock-typical” elements and some elements specific to a culture (eg. scarabia’s dorm song), diasomnia’s dorm song provides a different feel in many different ways, starting with the name. The name is a combination of japanese kanji meaning shii tenpen (恣意天変), or arbitrary calamity,  with the kanji also having specific contexts and usages as well. 

恣 (shi) means arbitrary, selfish. when used as a noun, it means to be proud, self-indulgent, and strongwilled (in a negative sense)

意 (i) means feelings, expression. when attached to the kanji 一 (ichi), it means ‘one track mind’, or devotion. 

天 (ten) means heaven. when combined with 変 (hen or strange), the word becomes 天変 (teppen), which means ‘natural disaster’ (in the sense that it affects the heavens and the earth). 

but why does diasomnia have a song named this?

this could likely do with the ending of book 7, where malleus was legally classified as a ‘natural disaster’, with governments paying night raven college (and our dad who ran away: crowley) to make sure he doesn’t overblot or do something again. 

moving on! is the language different? to compare, we will compare the language used in diadem and shiitenpen (put in hiragana and romaji bc i cannot deal with kanji bro)

interestingly enough, diasomnia (in order to create this "malleus is a lord" vibe) uses old japanese, to a point where many lyric video makers (which i used to refer to the hiragana) have stated that much of the kanji is no longer in use.

diadem: ただ いっすん きらめいた あざやかな ひかり つかむ まで, うんめい に だって おれたち わ わらいとばしてく (tada issun kirameita azayakana hikari tsukamu made, unmei ni datte oretachi wa waraitobashiteku) -> until we catch the light that shines for just a moment (we’ll keep running), it’s fate, so we’ll just laugh our way through it. 

shiitenpen: すべて を きりさく いかずち が かたる しるし を みよ さあ この すいりょく の ひかり の もと に せかい よ ひざまずけ (subete wo kirisaku ikazuchi ga kataru shirushi wo miyo, saa kono suiryoku no hikari no moto ni sekai yo hizamazuke) -> look at the telltale signs of the lightning that tears everything apart, and now, the world shall kneel under this emerald light. 

in detail:

kirisaku (切り裂く) -> to rip apart; ikazuchi -> another way to read the kanji for thunder; kataru (語る) -> to narrate, or speak; shirushi (印) -> mark suiryoku (翠緑) -> emerald, not to be confused by suiryoku (水力), which means ‘water power’. there is currently no evidence that modern japanese uses suiryoku to refer to emerald anymore, instead using the loan word エメラルド. hizamazuke (跪け) -> to kneel, commonly used by AOT character levi ackerman (in more common media)

through this, it’s pretty clear the vibe that diasomnia is going for— it’s about a powerful leader who struggles to connect because of the power he holds. 

it’s also interesting to note that compared to leona (another prince in the OB gang), malleus has more single lines, and is also a prominent feature in the song (with kazuki kato opening the chorus that is so well-loved). it could highlight the role malleus plays within the dorm itself— as mentioned in book 2, malleus is looked up to as a ‘king’ within the dorm, which, while was mentioned to highlight the parallels between leona (who wants ‘to be king’) and malleus (who would inevitably become king). 

whether this dimension would be expanded on in book 8 remains to be seen! i really hope they do, since there’s a lot regarding the diasomnia dorm (and all the dorms tbh) that hasn’t been covered yet :)

He knows that once your curse is broken you'll probably go back to your ordinary life. If your curse can't be broken you'll die. And if you, for some reason, continue to stay at Darkwick even after being cured, he'll be a fourth year next year--he's gonna go off to do field work. Eventually he'll work in the highest levels of the Institute and eventually he'll take his father's place as the president. With all of this, there's no way you'll be able to be together, no matter what. This is a short lived burst of happiness and attachment for him. It means a lot more to him than you realize.

今自分が一部で言われている「女性の問題を男性が書くな」というのは、作品が海外に波及したから食らう意見なんだけど、実は根本から理解できないわけでもない。 The opinion that "Men shouldn't write about women's issues" is a comment I have been subjected to because my work has spread abroad, but, in fact, it [(women's) issues] is not something that I can't understand at all. 部外者からの表面的な理解は、攻撃とたいして変わらないからね。(そういう話を僕はカリギュラ2という作品の一部で描いている) A superficial understanding from someone on the outside can feel just as violent as a direct attack. (I depict such a story in part of my work called "Caligula II") そこを受け入れるためには、作者やブランドとの信頼関係の部分が大きい。「この人はちゃんと取材をする人だ」とか「エンタメとして消費しない人だ」とか「意味のないことはしない人だ」とかね。それは作品を通じての対話を繰り返す必要がある。 国内であれば、直接言葉を尽くす機会もあったりして、そのメッセージは伝わりやすい。おかげで少しずつ自分の作風をわかってくれて、コンテクストで遊んでくれる人が増えてきている。(本当、超感謝) To be able to accept that is largely about building a relationship of trust with the creator(s) and the brand. 夜勤明けの日

夜勤がなかなかハードだったので帰宅後洗濯機を回したまま眠ってしまった。

時間指定をした宅配便のピンポンで目が覚める14時半前、3時間程眠っただろうか。

今年はタイミング良く2ヶ所の藤を見に行ったそのテンションで藤の香りとうたわれたフレグランスを購入し、それが届いたのだ。

眠い目をこすりつつ荷物を受け取る。

箱を開けボトルを取り出して振ってみる、こんな香りだったのかな、そうかもしれないしそうでないのかもしれない。

香りなんていうものは、繰り返し繰り返し刷り込まれて記憶に残る、そんな風に思っている。

実際にその場で香った藤の匂いとは違っていても藤を見た時の気持ちのまま買ったということに意味がある。

なんてことを考えていたらふと洗濯物を干していなかったことを思い出した。こんな時間から、思ったがこの風の強さと空気の乾燥ならいけるだろう、とまだ日が当たっている場所を選んで干し再び布団に潜り込む。

スマホを眺めつつうとうとして17時。まだ外が明るいので夕方になっているような気がしない。それでも17時には違いない。のろのろと起き上がり、お風呂にでも行こうかなと考える。疲れている。四肢を伸ばしきって大きな湯船にゆっくり浸かりたい。

着替えてなんとなくの身支度を整え、ホテルの日帰り入浴を利用することにした。バイパスを走れば10分程で着く。以前も書いたが高いけれど利用者も少なく静かにのんびり風呂を満喫できるのが好きだ。

GWで宿泊客もそこそこいるのかな、と思いきや車も数台、お風呂にはすれ違いで出たり入ったりする人が１人２人いた程度。ほぼ貸切状態でゆっくりと風呂を堪能する。

外の炭酸風呂に入るとヤシの木が揺れており、風の音がすごい。細い窓から見える内海に夕陽が映ってとてもきれいだ。くり抜かれた窓の中に夕陽は見えないものの、お風呂側の大きな窓に映った太陽は真っ赤で今にも向こうの山並みに沈んでいくところだった。ぬるめの炭酸風呂は心地良くいつまででも入っていられる。

ゆらゆらと湯の中を漂う小さな泡を眺めながら、人と人の縁とか繋がりはおもしろいものだなと考える。家族が知らない自分をさらけ出してみたり、今まで誰にも話したことのないような思いや考えを伝えてみたり、それについて互いに真剣に、時にはふざけながら共に考えたり。

こんなにも日々ごちゃごちゃと話すことがよくもまああるよなとすら思う。それぞれに違うから良い。似ているところもなきにしもあらず。

娘たちには私のスマホの開き方を教えておこう。私が死んだら、私のスマホを開きLINEの中のこのグループ、この人たちには伝えて欲しいと、ことづけておこう。

湯船からあがり、冷水を口に含む。体を拭き、顔にはフェイスパック、全身には化粧水とボディクリームを丁寧に塗る。髪の毛を乾かしてヘアオイルをつける。鏡の向こうにはさっぱりしました！という顔をした自分がい���。

帰り支度をしてフロントにタオルを返し外に出る。ものすごく風が強い。外風呂から見たヤシの木が音を立てて揺れている。４月も終わりだというのにまだ夜は寒い。

帰り道、コンビニに寄った。

車を降りてふと空を見上げると赤子の爪を切った時の様なか細い月が、うっすらと本来の月の丸い形を携えてそこにいた。地球照がこんなにも見える日も珍しいように思った。

電線に囲まれたその中にいる月が、あまりにもきれいでしばし眺める。時間的に沈みかけているのかほんのりと橙色に染まった繊月は大きく見えた。そういえば昨日は新月だった。生まれたばかりのあの月は月齢1.3。まだ始まったばかりだ。

Hi anon! I currently have no thoughts of any kind and have forgotten most of what I ever knew, but I love this small sequence so much that I'm going to try to elaborate on it.

In short: these lines are the capstone of Joker and Akechi's arc. They run right back through the third semester to the Jazz Club, and right back to his confidant. They're the emotional heart of them.

Akechi 君は変わらず、丸喜と戦う道を選べばいい。 kimi wa kawarazu, Maruki to chigau michi o erabeba ii All you have to do is stick to your guns and challenge Maruki. [lit. if you choose a different path to Maruki without wavering, it'll be fine.]

First off, here's another instance of that "choose your own path" motif, elided from the localisation. This is not just associated with Akechi in P5, but he really does hammer it home.

now freeze: the callback to conf 7

Conf 7 is probably my favourite confidant stage, and I've discussed it before at some length. Specifically, we're looking at the phone call afterwards, where Akechi sums up what they've discussed:

Akechi 僕らにはお互い譲れないものがあって、そのためにも負けられない。 bokura ni wa otagai yuzurenai mono ga atte, sono tame ni mo makerarenai Neither of us can afford to lose, because we fight in service of our principles. It's the same for both of us. Neither of us can afford to lose, because of these principles we won't concede. ⋯だからこそ、もしも君が自分を曲げたりしたら絶対に赦さないよ。 … dakara koso, moshi mo kimi ga jibun o magetari shitara zettai ni yurusanai yo And that is precisely why… I cannot allow you to change. … And that's precisely why, if you betrayed yourself that way… I couldn't allow it. だって、僕が負けたくないのは『君』なんだから。 datte, boku ga maketakunai no wa "kimi" nan da kara As you are now, as you think now… I cannot allow you to win over me.

This phone call, which likely takes place the evening after Akechi's murder phone call, summarises how Akechi sees Joker, at the start of the Sae mission—and it's a remarkably positive vision. Conf 7 highlights the similarities between Joker and Akechi, before conf 8 casts their differences into sharp relief.

In fact, in his determination to illustrate why the two of them can never be friends, Akechi reveals something he may not quite have intended: the things he most admires about Joker are his loyalty and his devotion to his friends.

Seriously. Joker's devotion to his confidants is the thing Akechi sets alongside his own obsession that has driven him to murder. I don't have space to lay the whole thing out here, but you should check the conf 7 essay out if you have time.

january in the jazz club

This image of Joker as an impenetrable fortress with indomitable will comes up again in the jazz club, and rather indirectly:

Akechi こんな異常事態でも 君がまともで助かったよ。 konna ijou jitai demo kimi ga matomo de tasukatta yo I'm glad you're still normal, even in this bizarre situation. Even in such a bizarre situation as this, you've saved your sanity. Akechi 君まで正気を失ってたら… まあ、その時は叩き起こしてただろうけど。 kimi made shouki o ushinattetara... maa, sono toki wa tatakiokoshiteta darou kedo If even you had lost it… Well, if that happened, I would have slapped you awake.

The logic of the first line has been slightly altered in translation. It's not a huge shift, but it's changed the emphasis—rather than being glad Joker hasn't lost it like the others, Akechi is observing it. He expected it. He would have expected no less of his rival. (That matomo de, by the way, is far more often seen as matomo de nai, and it means that someone is not sane.)

This follows straight on from conf 7—from the idea Akechi has that Joker is someone dependable. And more than that—if Joker should cease to be that way, Akechi views it as his duty to set him straight.

He said so in conf 7's phone call (that "I cannot allow you to change", which is actually far more like, "if you gave way, I couldn't allow it") And he's saying the same thing here: "if you lose yourself, I'll slap you awake."

This gives us a little additional context for 2/2.

Here's Akechi's next line:

Akechi それとも、君はこの程度で意志を曲げるようなやつなのか? soretomo, kimi wa kono teido de ishi o mageru you na yatsu na no ka? Or, are you really so spineless that you’d fold over some bullshit, trivial threat on my life?

There is a small linguistic callback here to that conf 7 phone call—Akechi uses the same verb 曲げる mageru, meaning to bend or distort, or to give way on a point of principle. The localisation has it as "fold", which does call back to conf 7, but to the wrong part! In conf 7, mageru referred to Joker's principles yielding under pressure, giving way under influence; here, it's in the extended form ishi o mageru—literally to bend one's will, to have it give way or crumble.

This word 意志 ishi is the "will" of Will Seeds, of the will to rebellion; this is the thing Akechi is calling Joker out on sacrificing. This is the thing he believes is so much more important than his own life. This is the callback here, through the jazz club and the phone call to that November night outside Penguin Sniper, to "You're my rival."

Literally, Akechi's line here is "or are you the sort of guy whose will crumbles for as little as this?". Compared to his image of Joker, Akechi's life is nothing. Compared to his image of Joker, the whole world is probably nothing. Again, it's the ideal and the real; 2/2 is when Akechi's image of Joker runs headlong into the reality of him, of a real, breathing, living boy who hurts and cries and bleeds and dies, rather than an icon. Even 11/20 never truly brings this home, because Joker escapes—just as conf 7 suggests Akechi expected him to. It is integral to the pedestal Akechi has Joker on that he would never throw the world aside for Akechi.

This is why it's only rank 10 promise Akechi, primed for the third awakening, who shows up to Leblanc to defend that pedestal. This is why the translation I return to for this line is "Or are you telling me you'd throw away everything you believe in for nothing at all?" Akechi's life is not the point here; he barely mentions it. The point here is supposed to be what Joker is throwing away.

And it's Joker, of course, not Akechi, who refocuses the conversation to what—to who—is really being thrown away.

joker's response

Joker 『この程度』じゃない “kono teido” ja nai This isn't "trivial"! You're not "nothing"!

There are other responses, of course, but this is the big one. This is the one that used to be "This isn't small potatoes"—and I hope I've illustrated why that translation was so bad that Atlus went back in and changed it. Because as well as gutting Akechi's lines of their context, that line gutted this whole moment, the pinnacle of Joker and Akechi's story, of its emotional impact.

Joker simply was not saying that things were a little bit serious—not small potatoes. He was saying Akechi mattered. You could easily render that kono teido ja nai as, simply, "But you matter." and that really isn't small potatoes

An overlooked response here is the third one, the only one Akechi will accept:

[Joker] 意思は曲げない ishi wa magenai I won't fold. My will won't break.

Yep. This one bypasses all Akechi's complaints about mercy, about betrayal, as he cuts to the chase:

Akechi なら、もう分かってるだろ? nara, mou wakatteru daro? Then you already know what needs to be done…

Note that the Japanese is a question—"Then you already know what needs to be done, right?". And it leads directly into Akechi's final demand: "What do you intend to do?"

Fansub release + translation notes for Utena ep 27!

This episode may truly be one of my favourites, and these translation notes are going to show it. There’s just so much to discuss here. In fact, I want to discuss the song translations too, but that would really make this post too long, so I’m going to make a separate post about that.

遅れてる！遅れてる！てるてる坊主のななみ様！

Super duper late! Super duper late! Nanami’s a baby who’s super duper late!

This one completely stumped Anya and me, because the Japanese on the third sentence makes NO SENSE. It literally means “Teru teru bouzu Nanami!” or “Nanami is a teru teru bouzu!”. Teru teru bouzu is a Japanese handmade cloth doll that’s used as a charm to ward off rain. There’s a nursery rhyme about it. But I couldn’t find any instances online of it being used as an insult like this. Anya found a loose connection between the teru teru bouzu and the Chinese legend of a broom-sweeping girl who gets abducted into the heavens in exchange for the rain to stop, and thought it could have been referencing alien abduction since Nanami is so worried about being called an alien. But this theory was tenuous at best and without a satisfying answer, I had to come to the conclusion that it’s just a nonsense word that kind of works as an insult and makes the juvenile teasing seem even more childish.

Juri: ななみ、気を付けてくれ。玉に傷がつくところだ。 Nanami: 玉？ Juri: そう、玉だ。

Juri: Nanami. Be more careful. You almost scratched up my baby. Nanami: Baby? Juri: Yes, my baby.

An impossible exchange. The joke in Japanese is that Juri says 玉 (tama: ball) but 玉 can also be short for 玉子 (tamago: egg). But you obviously can’t do this same wordplay in English!

I can’t take any credit for this one — it’s fully Anya’s idea. They mentioned the idea for the “baby” translation in DMs as early as the cowbell episode, and I thought it was brilliant. Juri would totally call her bowling ball “my baby”, and it perfectly allows for the confusion between Nanami and Juri.

ななみは今、頑張っています。お兄様とわたくしの輝かしい未来のために。

It’s just… I’m committed now. Committed to making a bright future with you.

A very tricky instance of 頑張る (ganbaru) to translate. Often you’ll see this word translated as “doing my best”, which is essentially the act the word describes, but it sounds wrong in most scenarios. It can sound too… political campaign-y (e.g. ”I’m doing my best for you”) or just plain awkward or campy (e.g. the flashback scene with Keiko and co. — “From now on, let's work together and give it our best shot!”).

Here, I believe Nanami is saying that she’s working hard, or prepared to work hard, as a mother. I believe “committed” encapsulates that meaning much better than “doing my best”. Of course, it doesn’t quite work without the follow up sentence to clarify the commitment, but as a whole line, I think it conveys the meaning really well and avoids a classic anime-english pitfall.

お兄様は…　男の子と女の子、どちらがいいですか？

Brother… which would you want more? A boy or a girl?

This translation is difficult because it requires the line to be able to read in two ways - is Nanami asking about sexual preference or preference for a child’s gender? Because of this, and because of the structure and phrasing of the Japanese sentence, it often gets translated as something like:

Which do you prefer, boys or girls? or;

Do you like boys or girls more?

But this has a high lean towards the sexual preference nuance. It’s rare that someone asking about the gender preference for a child would phrase the sentence in this way. That’s why I translated it the way I did. I think it still remains reasonable for Touga to interpret the question sexually (he is Touga after all), but it is much more plausible for Nanami to ask it like this.

Anthy: 親から子へと永遠に受け継がれていく心の箸渡し。

Anthy: Parents bequeathing their hearts to their children in urns. The eternal procession.

What a line! Probably my favourite line in the whole episode, and it has some stiff competition. Let’s look at the structure of this sentence:

The long verb phrase 「親から子へと永遠に受け継がれていく」 is modifying the noun 「心の箸渡し」. And that noun is a doozy: it means “hashiwatashi of the heart” — and what is hashiwatashi? It’s a Japanese tradition of passing the bone fragments of a cremated loved one between funeral attendees using chopsticks to take the bone directly from the chopsticks of the person next to you. This is the only time it is acceptable in Japanese culture to pass anything between chopsticks, precisely because of this morbid association. This imagery is POTENT.

The verb phrase is “Parents eternally bequeathing their hearts to their children”, and the auxilliary verb いく at the end implies an active momentum, like it’s still ongoing. And what is meant by “heart”? Keep in mind that 心 also means “mind” and even “spirit”, and I take it to mean one’s selfhood. So we’re talking about how elements of a parent’s selfhood is always passed down to their children: though genes, through shared experience, through inherited habits, through familial bonds, through trauma.

So Anthy likens the passing down of the “heart” to a sombre and macabre ritual, which says something about how she views this idea. I imagine she views this bequeathment as a curse (ha); her focus is on the intergenerational trauma, and how it means that no one can be their “true” self because they inherit a heart that is not their own.

Meanwhile, Utena’s response (”You could say that leaving a part of yourself with your descendants is a form of reincarnation.”) shows instead an attitude of hope. It shows a coming-to-terms with death — Utena’s own, and that of their parents. And coming to terms with death is antithetical to the doctrines of eternity that Akio and the academy at large have been trying to sell, so I think this scene also foreshadows not only that Utena will prevail against the system and gain the power to revolutionise the world, but also how they will do so.

To say a bit more about my translation choices here: although hashiwatashi is untranslatable without a long cultural exposition dump, I did see it possible and necessary to convey the same grim funerary feeling through English words. “Procession” was the word I pivoted the entire translation around through many iterations because of its funerary associations and because it evokes an image of slow, reluctant forward movement.
