The Japanese Version of Deltarune Chapters 3 & 4

last year i made a post covering aspects of deltarune chapter 2’s japanese localization that i hadn’t seen others talk about. people seemed to like it! and i liked making it as well, so now that chapters 3 and 4 are out, i’ve looked at the japanese text for them to see if i could find anything interesting.

and… yep i did.

since i’m one of the first english fans to look at the new japanese text in this manner, there’s a lot that i skimmed over or just straight up didn’t read, as a decent amount of dialogue is jumbled or shoved under “scr_text”. i mainly focused on the lore-important segments, since there aren’t as many character voices or jokes with interesting translations as there were in chapter 2… with two exceptions.

tenna

tenna is generally pretty well localized. i didn’t translate a lot of his dialogue, but 8-4 has done a pretty outstanding job of making tenna sound like a japanese TV host. for example, the narration to his intro video is translated from this:

It's now time for our feature presentation FEACHER Coming straight from your house Coming straight from YOUR house! He's the One He's GROOVY and NEVER glooby! You can't get this from an EGG! The sensation of your screen The show that makes you scream Say it with him, folks!

to this:

they didn’t need to intentionally misspell the line that replaced “FEACHER” but they did and i love that.

a lot of lines like these were translated to be more in the style of japanese television, and that’s awesome. i really admire the effort, and the shift is palpable even to me, who isn’t fluent in japanese at all.

others have already been curious about how “YOUR TAKING TOO LONG” and its variations are translated— in fact, this youtube video that i found beat me to the punch with covering it. (edit: this one provides a comparison between languages, which is very nice)

jack uses a mixture of hiragana and katakana (no kanji), refers to himself in the third person, misspells things (mostly using ワ for the particle “wa” instead of は), and occasionally uses emoticons. all of these give a strange but fairly childish impression.

and here’s how his iconic phrases were translated:

i looked at raise up your bat’s lyrics to see if there was any extra lore behind them. there wasn’t, but… ralsei’s replacement lyrics are pretty funny in this version. here are the full lyrics

UNUSED

i didn’t find many changes in the text of the chapter 3 and 4 “unused” text (otherwise known as “the voice in the code”), but i noticed that their dialogue sounds a little less feminine/childish compared to in chapter 1. maybe. it does seem like a lot of time has passed. idk

edit: actually, after looking back at all the unused text, it seems like they’ve been always more gender-neutral than i previously assumed.

prophecy

a few changes to the prophecy lines stood out to me.

reference to “depths”. nothing of note besides that

this is the word used to replace “asylum” here. take it as you will:

huh????? what the fuck does that mean??

also, the word for “love” used in japanese is 愛, which refers to any kind of love. so no double meaning here, but that doesn’t rule out the possibility of an intended double meaning in english, as the japanese translation of undertale has often had to erase intended double meanings that were not translatable, like “determination”.

addendum: As you know,

i’m editing the post to add this in because i forgot that it’s important.

you know the carol line where she says YOU in bright red text and no one knows whether she’s talking to kris or the player? well, luckily, japanese usually omits the word “you” in place of a person’s actual name, so hopefully looking at the japanese version of the line should—

she just uses the word for “you”.

this just makes it more evident that it is meant to be unclear who she’s speaking to.

CONCLUSION

wow that’s it. that’s a lot less than i expected there to be, but again, the game is translated pretty faithfully and there aren’t as many jokes that had to be localized in these two chapters. if you notice anything or want me to translate specific text, don’t be afraid to ask! i’ll be happy to answer any questions and help people out.

Naritaya's Furry Land

It all started when @questfortori showed me this post:

That sure is a PC-98 game that says "furries ga suki". I had to know what this was all about. Why does a PC-98 eroge have the word "furries", in English? Why did it devote a whole room to the idea of loving furries? I needed answers!

Like it says in the post, it's from the (in)famous Alicesoft eroge Rance 4.1, but searching for it didn't give me much in the way of results. The text in the screenshot is first-person, out of character text so it read like some kind of a dev room, but even searching for that didn't bring up much - until I found the script itself. And there it is, Naritaya's heroic pro-furry screed:

Nice to meet you. I'm Naritaya. I'm a newbie CG artist who was in charge of the title CG and a few other things this time. This will be my debut work. Anyway, my goal from now on is to steadily increase the number of furry lovers like me and create a game that could be called definitive for that genre (hah). So not only is our friend Naritaya a furry fan, he specifically uses the English word "furries" in romaji more than once while expressing his love for furries. This is a Japanese artist who knows and loves the English furry scene. (Keep in mind, this is 1995!) This is where @moomanibe found copies of some of Naritaya's personal art, with the URL still in the watermark, which is what brought us to:

NARITAYA'S FURRIES LAND

That's right, Naritaya had his own website in the 90s where he posted the anime furries of his dreams, filled with exactly all the kinds of anime art you might remember from the years 1995-2003.

His art style is distinctively 90s/early 00s anime, but there's that heavy use of "furries" in English again. I could only imagine the kinds of connections he must have had with the English-speaking scene, and then I found it tucked among his outgoing links page:

Yes, that's a link to the "Anime Transformation Archive". I lack the subject matter expertise to fully detangle that site's connections to the broader anime/furry scene but it's pretty clear that, yes, there was some western anime-furry fandom connection happening here. Didn't always see much of that back before social media brought us together across languages.

I'm not sure what he's up to now, but wherever you are Naritaya - hope you're still living the anime furries dream.

→I think this line should have been “And Taihou’s daughter, who was thrown out of the rear palace with the doctor, is my sister’s mother.” Or “The doctor and Taihou’s daughter were thrown out of the rear palace. That daughter is my sister’s mother.”

I guess they mistranslated 「医官と」 into “The doctor, and” in spite that it should have been “with the doctor”, that resulted in the incorrect translation that even Taihou was also thrown out of the rear palace.

甲斐がある（かいがある/Kai’ga aru）: be worth doing, worth it

To be exact, 甲斐がある means “be worth the effort of doing something” and it’s not monetary value. It took a lot of work and effort for Loulan to get Maomao there, but it was worth it.

It means “everyone can easily imagine it will happen for sure in the future, although it hasn’t happened yet.”

集落の微妙にはずれた所にカフェがあるのは、店主が儲けていないように見せるための工夫だとのこと。というのも、村社会では村人全員が同じ状況であれば、不平不満は出ないから、みんな助け合って、みんなが幸せ。逆に、一人だけ豊かになると妬み嫉みが生じて不幸になる、という考え方があるらしい。そのため、集落の目立つところにお店を構えると、「あの人だけを儲けさせてはいけない」という心理が働いて、村人はほぼ出入りしないカフェが完成するんだとか（ちなみに客層は「外来：現地＝9：1」くらい）。 村の人たちもカフェに行きたくても、見晴らしのいいところにカフェがあると周りの目が気になって入店しづらいから、あえて、ちょっと、分かりづらい場所に店を建てるのがお客様への気遣いポイント。 そして、この話は、あくまでも店内に入店するまでの話であって、店内で村人同士が出会う分には何にも問題はない。むしろ、村の人たちも憩いの場ができる事に関しては、ありがたいらしい。素直ぢゃない、ツンデレである。 なんか謎マナーに��た趣があるけれども、格差を生まないで協力し合うための生活の知恵の名残なのではないかと思う。 そして、自分の生活に当てはめて考えてみると、なんかわかる気がする。上司に食事に連れて行ってもらった時に「遠慮するな」とは言われても、上司より高いものは少し頼みにくい（この気遣いが間違いなのだけれども）。上司が「マグロ丼（980円）」を注文しているのに「海鮮御膳（1,580円）」はアウトな気がする（上司の器を見くびってて失礼なのだけれども）。近い値段帯のものにしつつ、上司より20円くらい高いものを注文して、平等感と上司の太っ腹感をだそうとしてしまう。 そのため、現地の人が集落で古民家カフェをオープンする際には、わかりづらい場所にお店を建設し、決してチラシなど撒かず、噂で徐々に広がっていくのを待つのが良いのかもしれない。 逆に街中から移住してきた人たちに関しては、集落に人たちも割り切っているらしく、なんとも思わないから、目立つところに店を出しても問題ないとのこと。 「らしい」とか「とのこと」が多い記事になった。 へー、と思いながら拝聴した。 全ての集落にあてはまるわけではないとは思うのだろうけれども、集落で生きるにあたり地域のルールに従ったしきたりが色々あるんだろう。都会の企業で暮らしても、謎マナーはあるし。瓶のラベル上向けたり、ハンコを傾けたりetc... そんなことを考えながら古民家カフェに入るとまた違った趣があるかもしれない。 とはいいつつ、あんまり斜に構えたことしてたら、純粋に楽しめなくなるから、モラルに反したことはせず、その場だけの出会いや会話を楽しんだ方が良いと思った。

人の姿をとってはいるが、綾時の正体は主人公の中に封印されていたシャドウのひとつ、「デス」が、主人公から麦け出して顕在化したもの。普通シャドウに人格が宿ることはなぃが、桐条研究所の事故がきっかけで主人公の中で眠りにつき、そのまま10年間もの長ぃ過ごしたことにより、人の姿だけでなく心をも獲得した。特別課外活動部によって12体の巨大シャドウが倒され、散りぢりになっていた破片が主人公の中で合わさることにより、その封印が解かれたのだ。ただし綾時自身には自分がシャドウであることの自覚はなく、主人公の中に封印されていたあハだの記憶もまったくなぃ。彼は「長いあいだ外国で暮らしていた」という自分自身の記憶操作にあざむかれる形で、巨大シャドウの消えた秋口に転校してくることになった。

後にプロトタイプが起こすオモチャ工場内の人間🟰従業員皆殺し計画にもキャットナップくんは加担。それに反対し抵抗したドッグデイくんや、その仲間たちは捕えられてしまう。その後に恐らくプロトタイプの命令からキャットナップはドッグデイ達を地下の牢獄に閉じ込めて拷問。その過程でドッグデイ以外の仲間は死亡。

月日は流れ十年後、ゲームの主人公がドッグデイの元に訪れるが僕は手遅れだと主人公を諭し、激励するドッグデイ。しかしそれを良く思わなかったキャットナップからの指示を受けたオモチャ達が彼を襲い体内に侵入し蹂躙。そのまま身体を乗っ取られたドッグデイは主人公を追いかけ回した後に死亡してしまう。

ちなみに、このチャプターではラスボスであるキャットナップも主人公との死闘の末、最終的には自分の命の恩人であり忠誠を誓っていたプロトタイプから直々に手を下され死亡してしまう。もうちょっと書くと、ドッグデイ、キャットナップは元々孤児院にいた人間の子供であり被検体にされた過程で作品上の姿になっている。

〇私説　お地蔵さまとはなにか 「お地蔵さま」「お地蔵さん」という概念の起源にして中心になるものは間違いなく仏教における信仰対象のひとつである「地蔵菩薩」です。一方で地蔵菩薩と「お地蔵さま」「お地蔵さん」（以降かぎ括弧は省略）は明らかに同一ではありません。お地蔵さまは庶民の様々な思い・願い・欲望と混交して膨大で曖昧な概念と実体（彫像）の集合体を形成しています。その混交は特に彫像において顕著です。 桐野東福さんのコメントにある「本体と端末」という譬えは私にもとてもしっくりきます。但し、各地の端末はその地域古来の思想、物語、宗教と混交してしばしば本体とは異なるものを生み出しました。例えて言えば「中央省庁の出先機関が地元にある様々な施設に入居・同居して地域に密着した新たなサービスをやりだした」というのが私の考えです。以下に説明を試みます。 https://ja9mjb.blog.fc2.com/img/20241223073629ca0.jpeg/ 〇混交についての説明 １　道祖神・土地神様と混交 道祖神は行路安全や疫病・悪霊の侵入を監視し、派生して子孫繁栄や子供を守る日本古来の神様です。仏教が日本全土に広まるにつれ、あちこちで道祖神の働きをする地蔵像が作られました。地蔵菩薩が庶民の目に触れるところに進出したことになります。 【以下憶測・根拠なし】各地に地蔵菩薩を（ひいては仏教を）広めるため寺院側が意図的に混交させたのかもしれません。 ２　庶民の切なる「願い」の受け皿となり混交 2つ目も庶民の願いと密接な関係があります。いつの世も庶民の願いの最たるものは安産や子の健やかな成長を願う「子安信仰・子安教」です。出産や子育ては非常に困難で大変なことでした。安産や子の健やかな成長を願うのは当然のことです。そうして子安神社、鬼子母神、コノハナサクヤヒメ、子安講などが生まれました。 本来現世利益を与えるものではなかった仏教も例外ではありませんでした。地蔵菩薩は衆生救済のために現世に遣わされた菩薩ですので、この子安信仰と結びついて「子安地蔵」に変質しました。仏教関連ではこの他に子安観音、子安大師などがあります。 庶民の願いと結びついた（子安以外の）地蔵様としては水子地蔵、酒断地蔵、身代地蔵、延命地蔵などがあります。 ３　合掌しているお地蔵様は何者か （中心概念である）地蔵菩薩は菩薩でありご本尊様ですから、本来は祈り合掌される対象です。しかしお地蔵さまには合掌しているものがあります。これに関してはよく判りません。 【以下憶測・根拠なし】 ・観音菩薩と混交したのかもしれません。 ・地蔵菩薩は修行中であるとも言われます。彫像を造る際に（同じく修行中の身であろう）僧侶や小坊主の像と混交したのかもしれません。 ・像を造る人は専門の職人・石工さんです。宗教的知識がなくて混同したのかもしれません。もしくは意図的に曖昧にして汎用化を狙ったのかもしれません。 〇　伝説・物語・寓話の発生 混交が起こった様々な概念や彫像を考察すると、地蔵菩薩が突出して庶民に親しまれ浸透していったことが判ります。道端のお地蔵さまに今も草花が供えられているのを見ることがあるでしょう。「親しみ」の中から多くの伝説・物語・寓話が生まれました。お地蔵さまが動き出して何かをするというのも自然な発想でしょう。[笠]地蔵はその最たるものです。お地蔵さまが親しまれた存在であること、僧侶や小坊主と混同して「人間と同じようなことをされる」というのはこの領域で起こりうる最も一般的な表現であり「間違い」でしょう。親しみがあるからこそ多くの物語が編まれ語られるのでしょう。 〇　私論のまとめ（再掲） お地蔵さまの基本概念は地蔵菩薩である。しかし庶民に親しまれ受け入れられる過程で様々なものと混交して「お地蔵さま」という膨大で曖昧な概念と実態（彫像）の集合体を形成している。 〇　追記（ぢぢいの今後のメモ） 「神」と「神様」と「神さん」、こちらは「お地蔵さま」とはちょっと違う気がします。 日本でも神と言いますが、「神々」と複数形で言うことの方が多いですね。どちらかと言うと西洋の絶対神を指して「神」と言う気がします。 「神様」は「神」と比べ日本的、八百万の神を表すことが多いかな。 「神さん」は「神様」の親称、本来敬うべ��存在を近しい存在として親しく話す時に用いる。でもお地蔵さんほどの広がり・混交はないようだ。「仏」「仏様」「仏さん」にもあまり意味の広がり・混交はないように思える。 「さん」づけは「えべっさん」「天神さん」など関西的なものなのか？こういう区別は西洋にもあるのでしょうか？ では敬う度合いが少し低い場合はどうか 「父」「おとうさま」「父さん」「お父さん」「父ちゃん」 これまた、言葉の意味の違いがありそうです。 日本語は難しいです。皆様は如何考えますか。

Maomao “Tashika, kyo’nen naku-natta?”

Maomao “The one that passed away last year?”

→I think this line should have been “And Taihou’s daughter, who was thrown out of the rear palace with the doctor, is my sister’s mother.” Or “The doctor and Taihou’s daughter were thrown out of the rear palace. That daughter is my sister’s mother.”

Loulan “I heard she loved ghost stories. I almost suffocated because of that once. Perhaps that was that grandmother’s doing. I am my mother’s daughter, after all. I’m sure she hated me quite a bit. Enough to want to kill me as a ghost.”

猫猫「幽霊(ゆうれい)なんて、いるか分(わ)からないよ」

Loulan “Typical Maomao. My mother married my father to give birth to ‘Loulan’. Purely for her own revenge. Father has western blood as part of his lineage. The same lineage as the Mother Royal.”

猫猫「ん？…ったく、寝相(ねぞう)悪(わる)いな…あっ…はっ…！はっ…くっ！あっ！」

Maomao “N? …Ttaku, nezo warui-na… A… Ha…! Ha… Ku! A!”

Maomao “Wow, what a messy sleeper―”

楼蘭「息(いき)は…ないわ」

Roran “Iki’wa… nai-wa.”

Loulan “They aren’t breathing.”

猫猫「どういう…、あっ…。…毒(どく)を…飲(の)ませたのか？」

Maomao “Do-iu…, a… …Doku’o… noma-seta-noka?”

Maomao “What do you― You made them drink poison?!”

楼蘭「……薬(くすり)よ」

Roran “……Kusuri-yo.”

Loulan “It was medicine.”

猫猫「くっ！」

Maomao “Ku!”

楼蘭「これだけ派手(はで)なことをしたんだよ。一族郎党(いちぞくろうとう)皆殺(みなごろ)し。目(め)に見(み)えてるでしょ」

Roran “Kore-dake hade-na koto’o shitan-dayo. Ichi-zoku-roto-mina-goroshi. Me’ni mieteru-desho.

Loulan “After everything we did, we’d all get killed, including the women and children. You’re well aware of that too, right?”

猫猫「うっ……」

Maomao “U……”

楼蘭「甘(あま)いジュースに混(ま)ぜて飲(の)ませたの。みんなで絵巻物(えまきもの)を見(み)た後(あと)に…。母親(ははおや)と寝(ね)たいって、ぐずった子(こ)もいたかな。でも、それはできない。この子(こ)たちのお母様(かあさま)は、私(わたし)のお母様(かあさま)と仲良(なかよ)しだったから」

Roran “Amai jüsu’ni mazete nomaseta-no. Minna’de e-maki-mono’o mita ato-ni… Haha-oya’to netaitte, guzutta ko’mo ita-kana. Demo, sore’wa deki-nai. Kono ko-tachi’no okaa-sama’wa, watashi’no okaa-sama’to naka-yoshi-datta-kara.”

Loulan “I mixed it in with some sweet juice. After reading a picture scroll together… Some kids wanted to sleep with their mothers. But I couldn’t let them. Their mothers are all very close to my mother.”

楼蘭「響迂(キョウウ)が遅(おく)れて来(き)たのは、猫猫を助(たす)け出(だ)そうとしていたからなのね。……この子(こ)、分(わ)かってたのかも。唇(くちびる)をかみしめて…でも、一気(いっき)に飲(の)み干(ほ)したのよ」

Roran “Kyo-u’ga okurete-kita-nowa, Maomao’o tasuke-dasoto shite-ita-kara-nano-ne. ……Kono-ko, wakatte-ta-no-kamo. Kuchibiru’o kami-shimete…demo, ikki-ni nomi-hoshita-noyo.”

Loulan “Kyou-u arrived late because he was trying to save you, I guess. Maybe he knew. He bit his lip, but… He drank it in one gulp.”

猫猫「どうして私(わたし)を連(つ)れて来(き)たの？」
